A New Territory: "By Attention And Kindness, All Repugnance May Be Overcome", Philip M. Smith

Florida Historical Quarterly

On July 10, 1821, Private Nathaniel Sherburne stood in formation for the change of flags ceremony in St. Augustine as Spanish la Florida officially became a United States territory. The sights of that day must have been exotic for the New Hampshire farm boy who ran away from home and joined the army. Private Sherburne was part of the 4th Regiment of Light Artillery of the United States Army, which had been under the command of recently retired Major General Andrew Jackson. Jackson himself was in Pensacola for a similar ceremony the following week. During the past decade, the United …

Good Roads And The Dixie Highway: Connecting Florida With The Rest Of The Nation, Patrick Sheridan

Florida Historical Quarterly

During the early twentieth century, the creation of new highways enabled the United States to transition from rail to automobiles as its primary mode of travel. These highways resulted from the efforts of the national "Good Roads Movement," which promoted the construction of highways to enable the use of automobiles for both business and pleasure. This article looks at the Good Roads Movement in Florida and its connection with the Dixie Highway, the first major north-south highway connecting Florida with the rest of the United States, during its peak years between 1910 and 1930. This movement led to two significant …

War, Fear, And Bread In Tampa, 1917-1918, Andy Huse Mar 2024

War, Fear, And Bread In Tampa, 1917-1918, Andy Huse

Florida Historical Quarterly

In early Febrnary 1917, two months before the U.S. entered World War I, local authorities in Tampa, Florida, required German aliens over age thirteen to register with the federal government. That same month, the city's German-American Club entered an extravagant float in the city's annual Gasparilla Fiesta parade. The float, one of only six that year, depicted a mighty waterfall. The Great War cast a long and dark shadow, unleashing a flood of fierce nationalism and suspicion across the U.S. home front. The conflict gave a new focus and urgency to anti-immigration fears across the nation, and the presence of …

All Disquiet On The Home Front: World War I And Florida, 1914-1920, Gary R. Mormino

Florida Historical Quarterly

On the eve of the First World War, the United States viewed events in Europe through a filter of isolationism and neutrality. Two vast oceans had reinforced an inclination toward internal affairs and paranoia, while engendering suspicion of diplomatic alliances and foreign revolutions. But events in faraway places-Sarajevo, St. Petersburg, and the Somme-made isolation impossible and neutrality improbable.

Engaging Hotel Staff In Anti-Human Trafficking Initiative, Tingting Zhang, Diego Bufquin

Rosen Research Review

Human trafficking is a serious global issue, within which the hospitality industry is a point of focus for sex trafficking. Despite increases in government- and corporate-mandated anti-human trafficking training, the level of hotel employee engagement with anti-human trafficking initiatives remains poorly researched. In a collaborative effort, researchers at UCF Rosen College of Hospitality Management, Associate Professor Tingting (Christina) Zhang and Associate Professor Diego Bufquin, have set about identifying the factors that influence employee engagement with anti-human trafficking initiatives in the hotel industry in order to establish a practical framework for implementing more effective measures.

This presentation is to display our experience as a ULA in a specialized chemistry course within the forensic science program, Trace Evidence. This course is an upper-level chemistry course that requires a strong foundation in organic and analytical chemistry and is required for all tracks in the forensic science undergraduate program. Trace Evidence also utilizes team-based learning and a flipped modality. We were tasked with helping students during active learning activities regarding the current content by using guiding questions. We learned the best way to help students was to ask open-ended questions, enhance their motivation, and understand their frustrations or …

"Addressing Sexual Abuse: Unveiling Hidden Realities", Shanzida Toha

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Spring 2024

My inspiration was from my IDS 4939 course where we had to present about a topic that we are devoted towards. It could be conveyed through PowerPoint, video, etc. but for me I chose to write a research paper about the indiscriminate circumstances that influence Sexual Abusers behavior, and how it profoundly directs their course of action. After an endless time spent on gaining data, this sensitive topic sent me to a black hole of no return. With boundless sources of support with the help of the internet I was feeling guilty as to what I could do with this. …

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Spring 2024

For our service-learning project for our final semester as part of LEAD Scholars Academy, we dove into deliberative dialogue. In our class, we research 2023 Florida State Bill 52. This bill requires public schools to provide education on the social and emotional impacts of social media, limiting social media usage during schools hours, and limiting cell-phone usage on school property as a whole.

Through this project and the interactions we had in class we learned just how powerful social media is, and the importance of awareness around the negative impacts it can have, especially on youth and teens.

Leadership Through The Special Olympics Florida, Aubrey M. Anthony, Brooke Leggiero, Cameron Weeks, Octavius Woods

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Spring 2024

The Special Olympics is a nationwide organization that focuses on providing a safe environment for individuals with intellectual disabilities. In Florida, this organization provides many opportunities for us to get involved and is why we chose this organization. We admired their mission for positivity and inclusivity, and therefore jumped at the opportunity to get involved. Some of this involvement included attending the recreational sporting events, playing with the athletes, and contacting the staff that was involved. We learned through this service learning, that the Special Olympics Florida is a truly congruent organization, and shows that their espoused values align with …

Chm2045c: The Hurdle, Benjamin F. Cherkasskiy, Kira Garvey, Abigail David

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Spring 2024

Many undergraduate students at UCF are required to take chemistry classes and the chemistry pathway to fulfill their major conditions. As ULAs for one of the first college chemistry courses that students will take, we have witnessed students struggle when being introduced to the content. This contributes to lower motivation among students and an overarching feeling of “I can’t do this”. We aim to help alleviate the assumption that chemistry is “hard” or “impossible” by personally working with students and utilizing the strategies we learned in our Pedagogy class (CHM 4942). Throughout the semester, we have worked one-on-one with students …

Impact Of Senate Bill 1580: Medical Conscience In Florida, Rishi Nair, Nicholas Mistry, Vishanth Murugesan, Hunter Burtha, Douglas D'Amelio

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Spring 2024

In 2023, the Florida Legislature passed Senate Bill 1580 (SB 1580), which enshrined protections of medical providers’ conscience into law. Upon enactment, proponents have hailed the bill’s leadership in enabling providers to uphold their personal values and refuse to provide care on such grounds. Opponents have questioned SB 1580’s ability to ensure accessible healthcare by enabling personal beliefs to potentially overshadow the scientific consensus. We analyzed the benefits and drawbacks of this new law in relation to existing research on the impact of medical conscience on health outcomes. SB 1580 draws upon affirmations of the Hippocratic Oath and moral practices …

Camp Boggy Creek Service Impact, Madeleine E. Hoffman, Elle M. Bouffard

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

Our service learning project focused on working with children who have special needs. Our volunteer work was completed at Camp Boggy Creek, a non-profit camp devoted to providing a “typical” camp experience for children with medical issues or disabilities. We completed 35 hours of service while supporting children and their families as they came to camp and stayed for a weekend of fun activities and relaxation. This experience has allowed us to realize the impact that special needs can have on a child and their families. The difficulties these families may face (whether it be emotionally, physically, or monetarily) can …
