Tampa's Multi-Purposed Waterway: An Environmental History Of The Hillsborough River, 1950-1980, Brad Massey

Hillsborough River State Park rangers Mike Evans and Brian Polk could not bear it anymore. For three weeks in February of 1981 they watched hundreds of dead fish float underneath the live oak-canopied Hillsborough River waters of their wilderness park, their bloated carcasses bobbing in the water and putrefying the air. Now, determined to find the cause of the slaughter, they boarded a canoe and paddled into Blackwater Creek, a Hillsborough River tributary. They did not make it far.

"Are our oldest heroes only to be found in the colonial history of the "Thirteen Original States?""1 Jose Manuel Espinosa posed this question in 1935 in a brief article on the Jesuit Francisco de Florencia (1620-1695), one of the most prolific sacred historians of Spanish America. As a student of Herbert E. Bolton-a pioneering historian of the borderlands-Espinosa argued that Florida should be considered part of the colonial history of the United States even if it was mostly under Spanish rule until 1821.2 Since Florencia was born in Saint Augustine, Espinosa debunked what he called the "Brooke legend," the belief …

To improve discovery of biography collections in a library and embrace Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in cataloging, the librarians can audit their collections with gender, race and ethnicity of the biographees in mind. At the University of Central Florida, librarians from Cataloging, Curriculum Materials Center (CMC) and Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery Services (ILL/DDS) analyzed a juvenile biography collection for biases, and enhanced its subject headings with the biographees’ gender, race and other information.

Whether they depict the rugged landscape of the American West or the seductive charm of a South Asian beach, photographs and their accompanying text are powerful drivers of tourism demand. But what lies behind our response to such tourism tropes? Rosen College researchers have produced a new study which reappraises destination marketing through a gender-based lens. Led by Dr. Tingting Zhang, the study has developed and validated a cross-cultural scale to determine ‘destination gender’, or whether a location should be thought of as having masculine or feminine gender traits and appeal.

To better present the Curriculum Materials Center (CMC) materials at the University of Central Florida and improve access to these materials for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI), the librarians from Cataloging, CMC and Interlibrary Loan & Document Delivery Services (ILL/DDS) undertook a project to analyze the bibliographic records of juvenile biographies and used the results to enhance subject headings with biographees’ gender, race and other information.

Flow-biota Interaction and Natural Infrastructure Design

Mangrove forest sustainability hinges upon propagule recruitment and seedling retention. This study evaluates biophysical limitations to mangrove seedling persistence by measuring anchoring force of two mangrove species (Rhizophora mangle and Avicennia germinans). Anchoring force was measured in 362 seedlings via lateral pull-tests administered in mangrove forests of two subtropical estuaries and in laboratory-based experiments. Removal mechanism varied with seedling age: newly-established seedlings failed due to root pull-out while seedlings older than 3 months failed by root breakage. Anchoring force of R. mangle seedlings was consistently and significantly greater than A. germinans (GLM: p = 0.002), however force to …

As a colonial holding, Spanish Florida was a provincial backwater. It was located on the periphery of empire and parsely settled. Spain spent comparatively little time and effort developing the infrastructure of the colony.1 However, it is for these very reasons that Florida reflects to a magnified degree a problem in mission fields throughout the Americas during the colonial period: how to combat disease in the mission populations while still working to extirpate Native practices seen as anti-doctrinal. Florida housewife Adele Kanter's letter was prototypical of religious women who were supporters of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).3 Community activist and housewife Shirley Spellerberg's letter was representative of religious opponents of the ERA. Women were mobilized to enter the political arena, many for the first time, on both sides of the ERA conflict. Florida was the key battleground state where the ERA failed after an intense decade-long (1972-1982) political battle that was an intersection of religious, gender and social issues. In 1865, George Franklin Thompson, a representative of the Freedman's Bureau, wrote that southeast Florida could become the "garden of the United States," but only if the water levels of Lake Okeechobee could be lowered by at least six feet.2 In this assessment, Thompson epitomized the nineteenth-century, triumphalist belief that settlement in the region of present-day Miami would depend upon a severe manipulation of the natural environment. In the 2002 film, Sunshine State, writer and director John Sayles fictionalizes the recent history of Amelia Island, Florida. Sayles tells the tale of how unscrupulous developers attempted to acquire the most valuable beachfront properties from local African-American residents to build condominiums and golf courses, transforming Florida's weather and environment into a commodity to be sold to northern retirees and vacationers. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, St. Augustine was still recovering from Francis Drake's 1586 raid during which the town and fields were ravaged.1 Officials were also evaluating the fallout from the 1597 Guale Rebellion during which four of the five friars working among the native peoples were killed, and rebuilding the town following a devastating fire in 1599.
