This is a brief investigation of stormwater runoff from a large shopping center located in Brevard County, Florida. Merritt Square Shopping Center has a parking area for 4,700 automobiles and is located on the shore of Newfound Harbor which is classified as recreation waters (Class III). A literature survey of runoff studies in other areas has been made for both "state of the art" and evaluation of findings. Water samples were initially collected from five locations. Review of the analysis of these samples indicated that while color and turbidity appeared to decrease linearly with time, organic and inorganic concentrations did …

This report is intended to examine the ecological changes due to mixing in shallow water bodies. Physical, chemical, and biological changes are reported in literature. A literature search revealed the range of mixing nodes or processes. Assessment of ecological changes due to mixing by boating activities had been evaluated in a research project supported by the environmental Protection Agency and conducted at Florida Technological University. The examination of changes due to mechanical mixing on lake ecology simulated in fifty-five gallon drums indicated the sensitivity of such parameters as total Kjeldahl nitrogen, conductivity, pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen. Feasibility Study Of The Utilization Of Solar Energy For Large Scale Power Production In The State Of Florida, Michael Propen

The objective of this paper is to investigate the feasibility of large scale electric power generation in the state of Florida by means of solar conversion. Such systems convert solar radiation directly to electricity or to thermal energy and subsequently to electricity. With the latter method, solar energy is initially collected and converted to heat at high temperature through a working fluid. The heat is then used to power conventional heat engine generator systems. Several methods have been proposed for converting sunlight to useful work. The most promising of these will be examined from a technological and economic viewpoint.

A study was made of existing methods of management, treatment and disposal of water and wastewater effluents at a large aerospace facility (Martin Marietta Aerospace) in Central Florida. Water consumption and handling were evaluated, with emphasis being placed on the handling of plating wastes, since they are the main contributor of industrial wastewater pollutants at the facility. The flow, storage, and treatment of the plating wastes were studied. Literature concerning plating wastes was surveyed to determine the latest "state of the art" on handling of plating pollutants. A test method and the associated equipment have been developed to investigate the effect of suspended solids on the flow of fluid into a deep injection well system. Preliminary testing indicates that the equipment and test method can be used to determine the permeability of rock samples with a high degree of accuracy. Additionally this equipment can be used in a testing program which will eventually lead to the development of guidelines for the degree of pre-injection treatment required for suspended solids so that the operational life of the well is not impaired.

Stormwater management in urban areas is a major concern today. The problem of disposing of this stormwater runoff in a satisfactory manner is very difficult indeed. Both the quantity and quality aspects of the runoff must be dealt with to obtain a solution of this problem. The water quality of the runoff can vary depending upon the different land uses of the drainage basin. The quantity of the stormwater runoff also depends upon the land uses, the rainfall intensity and duration of the storm. Numerical Taxonomy Of Anaerobic Bacteria Isolated From Ground Water Of A Sanitary Landfill, Kenneth J. Curry

Section I: Facultative and obligatory anaerobic bacteria were isolated from the ground water of a sanitary landfill characterized by sandy soil and a periodically high water table. Isolates were examined for 63 characteristics and subject to numerical analysis. Eight clusters were established and correlations with conventional taxonomy were made. The Bacteriodaceae were found to be the dominant group of organisms by the methods employed. The anaerobic population was observed to decrease as the period of seasonal rainfall ended. At the same time, gram positive anaerobes were largely replaced with gram negative ones. Leaching between sampling sites (wells) made correlations between …

This study was conducted to record seasonal variations in the epiphyllous sooty mold colonies found on citrus leaves in two central Florida citrus groves, to determine basic patterns of fungal growth throughout the year and to determine whether these general patterns are correlated with regional climatological data. The results indicated general seasonal variations in the reproductive units of five of the fungi from the colony. In the study, correlations were seen between the two Ascomycetes, Treubiomyces pulcherrimus and Trichomerium didymopanacis. They were found fruiting most abundantly during the winter and spring. A Serological Survey Of Greater Orlando Human, Canine, And Feline Populations For The Presence Of Antibodies To Toxoplasma Gondii, John Louis Weihe

Toxoplasma gondii, the etiological agent of toxoplasmosis, was first discovered in Ctenodactylus gondi, an small North African rodent, by Nicolle and Manceaux in 1908. Later the same year Splendore observed the organism in a laboratory rabbit. Human infection was first reported by Janku in 1923. Since its discovery, many investigations have shown the organism to be truly unique in the protozoan world. There appears to be only one species and only one serotype. Serologic and microscopic studies reveal Toxoplasma to have a vast host range. At least one representative of virtually every mammalian species tested harbored the parasite or showed …

Stormwater management necessitates a regional plan based on the best practical methods. "Storm", a mathematical model, is employed to simulate runoff conditions in the Shingle Creek Basin. The computed runoff quantity is calibrated directly with the streams hydrograph. Runoff quality is predicted with two sets of pollutant loading rates. The scope of the model is expanded by development of parametric curves that can be used to convert measured quality data to input land use loadings. A parametric study is also performed to fabricate the effects of urbanization on the Shingle Creek Basin.

Immunological Studies Of The Host Parasite Relationship Of Dirofilaria Immitis In Domestic Canines, Douglas Felton Qualls

Canine immunoglobulins of the IgG group were shown to be intimately associated with the cuticle of circulating non-infection Dirofilaria immitis microfilaria. The significance of these immunoglobulins in blocking a complete immune response in the definitive host is discussed. Immunodiffusion, immunoelectrophoresis and fluorescent inhibition techniques are described and their applicability to the study of host-parasite relationships are evaluated. A rapid reproducible method for the production of specifically labeled anti-D. immitis microfilaria globulins is presented.

Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant and animal life; however, its presence in concentrations exceeding assimilative capacities of receiving water bodies is undesirable. Therefore, the form and concentration of total nitrogen released in wastewater effluents is of great concern. During the course of this study, the nitrogen analysis was performed on the various unit processes of the Florida Technological University wastewater treatment plant. The average percent removal of nitrogen between plant influent and clarifier effluent was 30.5% during the month of August 1975. It is believed that the nitrogen removal is attributed to luxury uptake by the biomass through …
