This address argues that recent national reports on undergraduate education have identified fundamental weaknesses in collegiate learning, shifting emphasis from curricular inputs to measurable student outcomes. Drawing on documents from the National Institute of Education and the Association of American Colleges, the discussion highlights concerns about declining student engagement in the arts and sciences, fragmentation of general education, and the absence of coherent rationales guiding undergraduate study. Proper performance of the final clarifier in the activated sludge process is vital to total system efficiency. Inadequate clarification can adversely affect substrate removal efficiency due to the biochemical oxygen demand exerted by solids lost in the clarifier effluent. Detention period is one factor which influences clarification performance and thus is of interest to the designer engineer. Also of interest is the relationship between detention period and rising sludge conditions in the clarifier, which can lead to a deterioration in clarification efficiency. Over 21 million American women suffer from the chronic, cyclic psychoneuroendocrinological dysfunction known as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) (Greenfield & Wolf, 1983). At least five million of these women suffer from symptoms so debilitating that their personal and/or professional lives are disrupted (Labrum, 1983). Women who suffer from PMS often seek counseling because of the syndrome's behavioral, affective, and emotional components. Mental health professionals must be prepared to aid both the client and her gynecologist in the diagnosis and treatment of PMS. Populations of Western Atlantic loggerheads (Caretta caretta) and Florida green turtles (Chelonia mydas) have been in historical decline. The identification and protection of beaches that are major producers of loggerhead and green turtle hatchlings are vital to the preservation of these species.

A study assessing loggerhead and green turtle hatchling production was initiated at a 21 km stretch of beach in south Brevard County, Florida (Melbourne Beach) during the 1985 nesting season. Nesting densities were assessed from a season-long (10 May – 12 September) census in which every nest was counted and identified to species. An analysis of average reproductive …

In April, 1983, sewage effluent discharge from the Maitland and Winter Park sewage treatment plants was diverted from Lake Howell to the Iron Bridge Regional Sewage Treatment Plant. The sewage treatment plants of the cities of Winter Park and Maitland had been discharging into Lake Howell since 1927 and 1962, respectively. These point sources had contributed 95% of the total phosphorus and 69% of the total nitrogen budgets for Lake Howell. This research examines the use of non-cognitive personality measures as supplements to traditional cognitive ability measures for predicting training performance. The Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) significantly predicted an overall performance measure (R² = .17) for Navy BE&E Students (N = 155). However, when applied as a supplemental predictor composite to the military cognitive measure (ASVAB), the resulting increase in R² (.04) failed to attain significance, F(6, 144) = 2.17, p > .05). In further analyses, several HPI and ASVAB scales combined to significantly predict selected performance criteria. The ASVAB remained as the primary source of information. It is quite …

The purpose of this study was to determine the compensation preferences of seniors at the University of Central Florida. The sample consisted of 86 females and 77 males currently registered as seniors at the university. Subjects were mailed a questionnaire and asked to rank order 11 compensation options and answer nine demographic questions. One-way and repeated measures analyses of variance were used to compute significant differences, 10 were found between groups in compensation preferences as related to the demographic variables. Research to date has focused on specific job-related stressors such as role conflict, ambiguity and supervisory relationships utilizing satisfaction and performance as outcome variables. Results have often been ambiguous and non-conclusive. However, a variety of common physiological responses have been found to play a major role in stress reaction and management. The University of Central Florida (UCF) is a commuter campus, with over 90% of the students arriving by automobile. Parking spaces cost over $800/space, and funding to build new spaces is scarce. Existing lots on the perimeter of the UCF campus offer a potential advantage to park and ride services or a shuttle serve around UCF.

The Effect Of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome On Homosexual Identity, Robert S. Schulman

A study was conducted to assess the effect of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) on homosexual identity in a sample of homosexual men with an active AIDS diagnosis. Forty-two gay men with AIDS and 102 healthy gay men were handed questionnaires measuring various components of homosexual identity, broken down into 9 scales. A comparison of the total scores on these scales indicated that both groups of gay men had similar positive attitudes regarding their homosexuality.

An examination of paired scales between groups provided evidence that men with AIDS are experiencing increased conflicts with heterosexual society, anticipating greater discrimination resulting from …
