Feasibility Of Pulsed Air Operation In A Fixed Film Biological Reactor, Harry C. Pepper Iii

An investigation was made into pulsed air sparging in a downflow, fixed film biological reactor receiving domestic wastewater feed (primary effluent). The pulsed mode of aeration was compared to continuous flow or non-pulsed aeration based on BOD₅ and TSS removals. The reactor utilized 0.19 to 0.20 in. (ES) gravel media with a 5.5 ft. depth. Automatic backwashing was initiated by a high loss of head condition through a programmable controller. Average backwash water-volume as a percent of product water was, under stable operation, 16 to 18%.

Arachnid Fauna In Three Central Florida Plant Communities, David T. Corey

Arachnids were collected in three plant communities on the University of Central Florida campus, beginning in May of 1983 and ending in March 1984. These sites were undisturbed communities: pond pine, sand pine scrub, and flatwoods. Pitfall traps and sweep nets were used to catch arachnids every other month.

A total of 2,657 arachnids were collected in pitfall traps and 4,022 in sweep nets. Spiders were the most numerous group, consisting of 87.5% of the individuals in pitfall traps and 100.0% in sweep nets. Forty-two scorpions, 41 pseudoscorpions, and 248 opilionids were captured on the ground surface.

Seasonal Variation In Serum Testosterone Of Immature Sea Turtles In Central Florida, Lawrence K. Luepschen

A yearlong hormonal study of immature populations of loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) and green turtles (Chelonia mydas) inhabiting the Indian River in Central Florida, USA, provided information about the relationship between serum testosterone levels and life history habits. By use of a specific radioimmunoassay, testosterone levels of both species were found to remain constant throughout the year with only a slight increase in the warmer months. Adrenal production of steroids in response to stress does not contribute significantly to overall testosterone levels may be reduced for turtles held in captivity. Testosterone levels indicate that the sex ratios of both species …

In specific genetic backgrounds, a mutation in the tuh-3 gene results in the homeotic transformation of head structures to either leg disc derivatives or structures normally found in the extreme posterior end of wild-type animals. The origins of the homeotic structures were mapped to defined positions in the eye-antennal imaginal disc by transplanting abnormal regions of discs isolated from tuh-3 mutants into host mwh;e4 larvae. These metamorphosed implants were removed and differentiated structures were identified. Of 211 successfully recovered implants, 157 gave rise to homeotic tissue: abdominal tergite, male or female external genitalia and/or leg tissue. Transformations to abdominal tergite …

Preparation Of Geminal Diflourodienes, Antonio Landavazo

This report discusses research involving the preparation of germinal difluorodienes. Free radical addition of dibromodifluoromethane to 1-hexene and cyclohexene was performed, followed by a double dehydrohalogenation to yield 1,1-difluoro-1,3-heptadiene and 3-(difluoromethylene)cyclohexene, respectively. NMR, IR, and mass spectral data were obtained and presented as groundwork for further research. A study comparing the free radical initiators, benzoyl peroxide and 2,2’-azobis-(2-methyl)proprionitrile (AIBN) was included, showing neither as ideal initiators for the free radical additions performed. The relative stabilities of the bromodifluoromethyl and the difluoroiodomethyl radicals were approximated. A Diels-Alder reaction of 1,1-difluoro-1,3-heptadiene with 4-phenyl-1,2,4-triazoline-3,5-dione produced the expected [4 + 2] cycloadduct in good …

The study examined the number of significant factors in the Hackman and Oldham (1980) job characteristics model. The original factors were: Skill Variety, Task Significance, Task Identity, Autonomy, and Feedback. Scores on these dimensions for 84 employees of the University of Central Florida (21 supervisory and 63 non-supervisory subjects) were used as the basis for this study through a mail administration of the Hackman and Oldham Job Diagnostic Survey (JDS) and their Job Rating Form (JRF). It was hypothesized that: (a) only four significant job dimensions would emerge from factor analysis of the data; (b) that the motivating potential ratings …

The effectiveness of IL-2 in the enhancement of immune responses in B6-AKR and normal B6 mice was investigated. In vivo treatment of chimeras with murine IL-2 partially restored PFC responses of their splenocytes to SRBC. This treatment suppressed splenocytes IL-2 production in chimeras. In vivo treatment of chimeras with rhIL-2 resulted in a slight enhancement of mitogenic responses to Con-A. This treatment had no significant effect on mitogenic responses to PHA. The rhIL-2 treatment did not result in suppression of IL-2 production by chimeric splenocytes. Recombinant human IL-2 enhanced mitogenic responses of normal B6 and chimeric mice to PHA in …

Treatment Of Chronic Nightmares Using Progressive Relaxation Training, Jennifer R. Trefonas

This study investigated the effects of progressive muscle relatxation on the frequency of, and the anxiety associated with, chronic nightmares. Three females diagnosed as suffering from an anxiety disorder and who experienced at least two nightmares per week served as subjects. Treatments consisted of practicing progressive relaxation trainig twice daily with the assistance of a tape-recorded exercise. The first practice occurred prior to 3:00 p.m. and the second practice occurred before retiring at night. Subjects recorded nightmare frequency, intensity, and theme on the Daily Nightmare Questionnaire (DNQ). In addition, nightmare-associated anxiety was measured daily with the State Trait Anxiety Inventory …

Behavioral Problems Among Sexually Abused And Nonabused Children, Kelli B. Mills

This study investigates the level of social competency and presence of behavioral problems associated with young sexually abused children ages 4 to 8, as compared to those among a comparable sample of nonabused young children. Thirty-two parents or guardians, 16 in each group, completed the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist for each child. Characteristics of the abuse were addressed on an additional questionnaire. Data was collected on 12 female and 4 male children in each group. The results indicated that the amount and severity of behavior problems was greater and social competency levels were lower among the sexually abused children than …

This study investigated cognitive components of marital adjustment and the role of social desirability response sets in a sample of retired older adults. It was hypothesized that higher marital adjustment scores would correlate negatively with dysfunctional beliefs concerning marriage. The objectives of the study were to identify which irrational beliefs are related to higher and lower levels of marital adjustment, and to determine the extent to which higher adjustment scores reflect the tendency to respond in a socially desirable manner. This research provides ultrastructural information regarding pulmonary surfactant secretion from stimulation of adrenergic pathways to the lung via the stellate ganglion. This information will help clarify the important role of the sympathetic nervous system in surfactant disorders. It also provides insight into sympathetic mechanisms causing surfactant derangement in adult and infant respiratory distress syndromes (RDS). Basic cellular mechanisms of surfactant metabolism, including synthesis and packaging in lamellar bodies, were studied. Results shed light on these basic processes of lung cell function.
