The Nebraska Department Of Communication Studies Story: There Are Happy Endings That Go Beyond Football And A Good Crop Year, William J. Seiler

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article discusses a proposed targeting of the Department of Communication Studies of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for total elimination, as of September 1995. The department, housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, offers courses of study leading to the bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees. The Nebraska State Legislature mandated that the university system budget cut 3 percent, or $3.8 million from its budget, over two years. The financial situation in the state at the time of the budget mandate was generally good in comparison to other states. It is important to know that the university campus was under …

Demise Of The College Of Communications And Fine Arts At Siuc, Gerald Stone

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article focuses on significant events leading to the demise of the College of Communications and Fine Arts (CCFA) at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC) in 1993. The CCFA at SIUC was one of the largest units of its kind in the country. It had been in existence almost 25 years, formed when the fine arts school joined the School of Communications. In 1990, Jim Edgar was elected governor of Illinois, the first Republican in recent memory. The change in political fortunes brought a new head of the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the coordinating body for all post-secondary …

Micro-Raman Spectroscopy In The Undergraduate Research Laboratory, R. Voor, L. Chow, A. Schulte

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Modern materials science requires processing and characterization techniques for microscopic structures. Molecular probes such as Raman spectroscopy are some of the most viable tools, particularly if they are supplemented by imaging to obtain spatially resolved compositional information of inhomogeneous or low volume samples. In order to introduce these techniques and materials science experiments into the advanced undergraduate laboratory, we have constructed an inexpensive micro-Raman attachment, which consists of an off-the-shelf microscope and the coupling optics to an existing Raman spectrometer. The modification of the microscope, the optical coupling, and a low cost viewing system for positioning the laser excitation on …

Effects Of Avian Breeding Colonies On A Man-Made Freshwater Marsh In East Central Florida, James L. Burney Jr Jan 1995

Effects Of Avian Breeding Colonies On A Man-Made Freshwater Marsh In East Central Florida, James L. Burney Jr

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The effects of nutrient loading from avian breeding colonies into aquatic/marine ecosystems have been well documented. Documented influences include increased productivity of aquatic/marine macrophytes, elevated sediment nutrient concentrations, and increased densities of zooplankton and planktivorus fishes. The primary pathway of nutrient export from the rookery is through excreta from adult birds and their offspring. This study examined the influences of a 400-nesting pair rookery of cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) in 1990 and a 75-nesting pair rookery of cattle egret in 1991 on a man-made freshwater treatment marsh in east central Florida. Because the fundamental intent of the created marsh (study …
