Studies Of Far-Infrared/Submillimeter P-Type Germanium Laser, Kijun Park
Studies Of Far-Infrared/Submillimeter P-Type Germanium Laser, Kijun Park
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A novel p-Ge laser at 165-205 μm wavelengths in Voigt configuration using a regular permanent magnet has been developed and is described here. The necessary magnetic field is provided by a permanent magnet for the first time. Experiments with the traditional, Faraday-configured, superconducting magnet are performed for comparison. Emission is observed over a wider range of electric-field magnitude in Voigt configuration at a· given magnetic field than in Faraday configuration. The spectral response of several different inductive metal meshes for use as output couplers is presented. The widest electric-and magnetic-field range for laser emission was found using a #750 copper …
The Effect Of Varying Temperature, Flux And Pretreatment On The Microfiltration Of Lake Michigan Water, Karen Linda Kopp
The Effect Of Varying Temperature, Flux And Pretreatment On The Microfiltration Of Lake Michigan Water, Karen Linda Kopp
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated microfiltration of Lake Michigan Water for the production of drinking water. A 60 gpm Memcor microfiltration pilot plant was operated for nine months at Manitowoc, Wisconsin to determine and model the performance characteristics of a microfiltration pilot plant for varying surface water conditions. Statistical regression and modeling was used to determine and develop quantitative relationships between time of operation and several operational variables for water quality and productivity. Modifications of Darcy's Law and flux decline data were used to develop a model relating temperature and flux to cleaning frequency. Statistical hypothesis testing and associated modeling were used …
The Effects Of Humor On Secretory Immunoglobulin A In Aids Patients And Non-Immunodeficients, Howard Scott Mcgregor
The Effects Of Humor On Secretory Immunoglobulin A In Aids Patients And Non-Immunodeficients, Howard Scott Mcgregor
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate 'sense of humor' and a humorous external event as possible factors effecting functioning levels of the immune system for immunodeficient and non-immunodeficient populations. Specifically, it was to investigate the degree in which a humorous video effected levels of secretory immunoglobulin A (SIgA) in AIDS patients and non-immunodeficient students. It was hypothesized that all subjects would show an increased level of SIgA after exposure to the humorous video. A greater immune response was expected from the non-immunodeficient group. However, a significant increased level of SIgA was still expected in the AIDS patients …
In Their Own Words: Using Media Artifacts To Teach Media Literacy, Micheal J. Gotcher, Margaret Duffy
In Their Own Words: Using Media Artifacts To Teach Media Literacy, Micheal J. Gotcher, Margaret Duffy
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
This article discusses methods and associated readings for teaching media literacy. The prescribed methods allow the media and their decision-makers to implicate themselves using examples of their own products and their own words. Media kits, video news releases and advertisements are used to illuminate and criticize media structures, products and economic imperatives. Media literacy may be defined as the learned ability to understand the rules, conventions and persuasive elements of mass mediated products. Media literacy involves inviting individuals to see media products as part of the process of building realities and of constructing cultures.

Identification, Cloning, And Mutational Analysis Of The Casein Kinase 1 Cdna Of The Malaria Parasite, Plasmodium Falciparum - Stage-Specific Expression Of The Gene, Sailen Barik, Russell E. Taylor, Debopam Chakrabarti
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
The cDNA for casein kinase 1 (CK1) of Plasmodium falciparum was cloned, sequenced, and expressed in bacteria, The single major open reading frame of the 1,2-kilobase pair cDNA coded for a 324-amino acid polypeptide of similar to 37 kDa, the predicted sequence of which showed strong identity with known CK1 isoforms, The purified recombinant enzyme exhibited properties characteristic of CK1, such as inhibition by CK1-7, the ability to phosphorylate a highly specific peptide substrate, and a strong preference for ATP over GTP, A casein kinase activity, partially purified from soluble extracts of P. falciparum by affinity chromatography through CK1-7 columns …
Continuum Limit Of Lattice Approximation Schemes, Carl M. Bender, Alexander Tovbis
Continuum Limit Of Lattice Approximation Schemes, Carl M. Bender, Alexander Tovbis
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
Boundary-layer perturbation theory problems are inherently singular. However, it is known that discretizing the problem by introducing a lattice may convert such problems into regular perturbation problems. The singular nature of boundary-layer problems is then relegated to and hidden in the continuum limit, the subtle limit in which the lattice spacing tends to zero. If the lattice is introduced cavalierly, then extrapolating to zero lattice spacing gives a sequence of extrapolants that at first approaches the correct limit and then veers off, thereby revealing the asymptotic nature of such problems. However, discretizing the problem following the procedures described here yields …
An Approach To The Synthesis Of Biological Tissue, Jannick P. Rolland, Robin N. Strickland
An Approach To The Synthesis Of Biological Tissue, Jannick P. Rolland, Robin N. Strickland
Faculty Bibliography 1990s
Mathematical phantoms developed to synthesize realistic complex backgrounds such as those obtained when imaging biological tissue, play a key role in the quantitative assessment of image quality for medical and biomedical imaging. We present a modeling framework for the synthesis of realistic tissue samples. The technique is demonstrated using radiological breast tissue. The model employs a two-component image decomposition consisting of a slowly, spatially varying mean-background and a residual texture image. Each component is synthesized independently. The approach and results presented here constitute an important step towards developing methods for the quantitative assessment of image quality in medical and biomedical …
