Course Fee Assessments: Categories And Policies, Lorayne W. Lester Jan 1998

Course Fee Assessments: Categories And Policies, Lorayne W. Lester

Journal of the Association for Communication Administration

This article provides information on special student fees authorized by the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. These fees are assessments beyond the regular tuition costs paid by all students when departments must purchase markedly unusual, expendable materials or equipment for use by small numbers of students in certain highly specialized courses. Special fees have also been authorized for departments required to provide services, equipment, or facilities for small populations of students when such services, equipment or facilities are clearly beyond those commonly provided for the majority of students on campus. In a few instances, …

Interaction Of Light With A Transversely Moving Nonlinear Medium: Beyond Doppler Laser Velocimetry, N. V. Tabiryan, S. R. Nersisyan, M. Warenghem Jan 1998

Interaction Of Light With A Transversely Moving Nonlinear Medium: Beyond Doppler Laser Velocimetry, N. V. Tabiryan, S. R. Nersisyan, M. Warenghem

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Interaction of a laser beam with a transversely moving nonlinear medium has been studied both experimentally and theoretically. With the mesophase of a nematic Liquid crystal (NLC) as the nonlinear medium, transverse motion of the NLC at speeds of similar to 1 mu m/s relative to the laser beam, causes remarkable changes in its orientational state. The response of the medium to the transverse motion is enhanced considerably in the case of threshold nonlinearity where the reorientation of the LC takes place as a second order phase transition. The diffusive transport of light induced perturbations of the nonlinear medium, give …

Exponential Asymptotic Expansions And Approximations Of The Unstable And Stable Manifolds Of Singularly Perturbed Systems With The Henon Map As An Example, Alexander Tovbis, Masa Tsuchiya, Charles Jaffé Jan 1998

Exponential Asymptotic Expansions And Approximations Of The Unstable And Stable Manifolds Of Singularly Perturbed Systems With The Henon Map As An Example, Alexander Tovbis, Masa Tsuchiya, Charles Jaffé

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The subject of this paper is the construction of the exponential asymptotic expansions of the unstable and stable manifolds of the area-preserving Henon map. The approach that is taken enables one to capture the exponentially small effects that result from what is known as the Stokes phenomenon in the analytic theory of equations with irregular singular points. The exponential asymptotic expansions were then used to obtain explicit functional approximations for the stable and unstable manifolds. These approximations are compared with numerical simulations and the agreement is excellent. Several of the main results of the paper have been previously announced in …

Antimalarial Activities Of Polyhydroxyphenyl And Hydroxamic Acid Derivatives, Kevin P. Holland, Howard L. Elford, Valerie Bracchi, Charles G. Annis, Sheldon M. Schuster, Debopam Chakrabarti

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Several known mammalian ribonucleotide reductase inhibitors featuring a polyhydroxyphenyl and/or hydroxamate moiety as the active group were screened for potency in inhibiting growth of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. Compounds containing a 2,3- or 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl group as well as benzohydroxamate appear to be the most effective inhibitors of the malaria parasite.

Power Analysis For Detecting Trends In The Presence Of Concomitant Variables, David M. Nickerson, Arnold Brunell Jan 1998

Power Analysis For Detecting Trends In The Presence Of Concomitant Variables, David M. Nickerson, Arnold Brunell

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

In some situations, survey counts must be adjusted for the effects of concomitant variables using analysis of covariance in order to detect a trend in abundance over time. A power analysis in these cases allows the calculation of the probability of detecting a trend after adjustments. The methods will be applicable to samples taken at regular or irregular intervals in time or space, and in which the effects of the concomitant variables do not change over time. Furthermore, the detection of linear and intrinsically linear change can be determined. The methods are applied to the monitoring of American alligator (Alligator …

Analysis Of The Operation And Plasma Dynamics Of Extreme-Ultraviolet And Soft X-Ray Lasers, Howard A. Bender Jan 1998

Analysis Of The Operation And Plasma Dynamics Of Extreme-Ultraviolet And Soft X-Ray Lasers, Howard A. Bender

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Extending lasing action into the extreme ultraviolet and soft x-ray regions of the electromagnetic spectrum has been a natural progression in the continuing development of short wavelength radiation sources. However fundamental difficulties with the media used to produce short wavelength lasers has in general hindered the widespread development and use of such lasers in applications. Up to now all EUV and soft x-ray lasers have operated with plasmas as the gain medium to support lasing. This is a general requirement imposed by 1) the characteristics of short wavelength radiation as it originates from highly energetic atomic transitions and 2) the …

Parent Childrearing Beliefs And Child Externalizing Behaviors In Families Of Adhd And Odd Children, June E. Hoefling Jan 1998

Parent Childrearing Beliefs And Child Externalizing Behaviors In Families Of Adhd And Odd Children, June E. Hoefling

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship between the perceived externalizing behaviors of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and the maladaptive childrearing beliefs of their parents. The study used archival survey data provided by Intervention Services, Inc., a community mental health center. Data from 338 families with a child diagnosed with ADHD or ODD were analyzed. The study used the Conners' Parent Behavior Rating Scale short version to measure the level of conduct problems, impulsivity, and hyperactivity of the children as perceived by the parents. The Adult-Adolescent Parenting Inventory was used to measure the degree of parental …

Composition And Change Of Maritime Hammock Flora In East-Central Florida After 20 Years, Donald John Spence Jan 1998

Composition And Change Of Maritime Hammock Flora In East-Central Florida After 20 Years, Donald John Spence

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The vegetation of eight east-central Florida maritime hammocks studied in 1997 were compared to similar data collected over 20 years ago. Study sites are located in the northern half of the Indian River Lagoon system mostly within Canaveral National Seashore and Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. The upland hammock vegetation throughout the state generally has an oak-palm association, but here these species dominate. Results show that sabal palm, live oak, laurel oak, and pignut hickory, the four dominant tree species in 1976-77, are still dominant in 1997; however, there has been a loss in tree species richness. Most shrub species …

Nineteenth-Century American Housekeeping Books : Women's Workplace Manuals Historical Research In Technical Writing, Melanie C. Woods Jan 1998

Nineteenth-Century American Housekeeping Books : Women's Workplace Manuals Historical Research In Technical Writing, Melanie C. Woods

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes three American housekeeping books—Lydia Maria Child's The American Frugal Housewife, Catherine Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe's The American Woman's Home, and Helen Campbell Stuart's The Easiest Way in Housekeeping and Cooking—as historical examples of technical writing. The study follows current recommendations for historical research in the field, namely, to analyze technical writing texts in consideration of their historical context. This involves determining what constituted technical writing in the nineteenth century; considering the publishing context of the study; and applying this definition to analyze three housekeeping books as technical manuals. These texts exemplify technical writing …
