The Relationship Between Psychometrically-Defined Social Anxiety And Working Memory Performance, Timothy L. Paskowski May 2011

The Relationship Between Psychometrically-Defined Social Anxiety And Working Memory Performance, Timothy L. Paskowski

HIM 1990-2015

Anxiety disorders are among the most commonly diagnosed class of mental illness in the United States, and often involve abnormally high levels of stress and social fear. Despite high lifetime prevalence rates, social anxiety disorder (SAD) has remarkably low diagnosis and treatment rates. Furthermore, while individuals with other specific psychiatric disorders tend to exhibit significant neuropsychological deficits, neuropsychological functioning in individuals with SAD remains largely untested. A majority of the few existing studies concerning neuropsychological performance in SAD samples focus on specific functions, and their limited results are highly mixed. The primary objective of this investigation was to provide a …

A Critical Phenomenology Of Civilization, J. C. Brinson May 2011

A Critical Phenomenology Of Civilization, J. C. Brinson

HIM 1990-2015

Civilized culture is killing the planet. At present, we are facing the largest extinction event in 65 million years and the cause, according to most scholars, is "patently" human. My question, however, is not whether the mass destruction of the biosphere is the result of an unfortunate and misguided particularity within civilization (e.g., over consumption, driving too much, etc.), but rather: Is it the case that civilization, by its very nature, entails the destruction of the natural world and of both human and non-human communities? In the vein of a fairly recent movement in scholarship, my answer is a resounding …

Predictors Of Presence In Virtual Reality, Brandon Sollins May 2011

Predictors Of Presence In Virtual Reality, Brandon Sollins

HIM 1990-2015

The subjective experience of presence is considered to be important in the treatment of anxiety disorders using virtual reality. Presence can be defined as a psychological phenomenon through which one's cognitive processes are oriented towards another world. Most of the research on presence has focused on the roles of technological factors influencing presence, while the number of studies focusing on the personality and physiological predictors are far fewer. Thus, the present study examined the relationship between various personality variables and presence, along with physiological correlates of presence when engaged in a virtual environment. The Presence Questionnaire, to determine their experience …

Microrna Regulation Of Prostate Cancer Desensitization To Androgen Receptor Antagonist Drugs During Androgen Deprivation Therapy, Robert A. Lorch May 2011

Microrna Regulation Of Prostate Cancer Desensitization To Androgen Receptor Antagonist Drugs During Androgen Deprivation Therapy, Robert A. Lorch

HIM 1990-2015

The current standard treatment of prostate cancer by androgen deprivation therapy involves using drugs such as bicalutamide (Casodex) to antagonistically block androgen receptors that are normally present within prostate cells. Usually, the therapy is successful in the short run at limiting the growth of prostate cancer. However, in virtually all cases tumors begin to grow aggressively again after several months of treatment and new therapies must be started. The mechanism by which these prostate cells transform from androgen sensitive to androgen independent and anti-androgen resistant is unclear. In this study, we investigated the role of microRNAs, small 15 to 18 …

Perceived Gender And Its Effect On Attributions Toward Avatars In The Video Game Spore, Victoria Marie Sweeney May 2011

Perceived Gender And Its Effect On Attributions Toward Avatars In The Video Game Spore, Victoria Marie Sweeney

HIM 1990-2015

In this study, 174 undergraduates from the University of Central Florida were asked to rate individual human and animal avatar features from the video game Spore on their level of femininity, masculinity, likability, and how well the feature represented them on a 7 point Likert scale of agreeability. Avatar features were presented on a neutral gray, quadruped body in two different views. It was expected that participants would show higher likability for avatar features that they perceived as corresponding to their Personal Attribute Questionnaire (PAQ) gender. Males liked feminine features approximately the same as females, however, in many categories females …

Cross-Talk Of Retinoic Acid And Adrenergic Hormone Signaling May Influence Development Of Cardiac Conduction And Rhythmicity In Utero, Sabikha Alam May 2011

Cross-Talk Of Retinoic Acid And Adrenergic Hormone Signaling May Influence Development Of Cardiac Conduction And Rhythmicity In Utero, Sabikha Alam

HIM 1990-2015

Stress hormones, adrenaline and noradrenaline, have been shown to be critical for heart development. Mice lacking dopamine greek lower case letter beta]-hydroxylase (Dbh), an enzyme responsible for synthesis of these adrenergic hormones, die during mid-gestation due to cardiac failure. Prior research showed that adrenergic cells are found within the electrical conduction system of the heart, and adrenergic deficiency leads to slowed cardiac conduction during embryogenesis. Microarray analysis of wild-type (Dbh+/+) and knockout (Dbh-/-) mouse hearts revealed significant differences in expression of retinoic acid (RA) signaling genes. RA signaling has also been shown to be critical for heart development. These data …

Analysis Of The Repair Of Topoisomerase Ii Dna Damage, Eric D. Goldstein May 2011

Analysis Of The Repair Of Topoisomerase Ii Dna Damage, Eric D. Goldstein

HIM 1990-2015

A large number of anti-cancer chemotherapeutics target DNA topoisomerases. Etoposide is a specific topoisomerase II poison which causes reversible double strand DNA breaks. The focus of this project is to analyze the repair of DNA damage induced by etoposide.. Double strand DNA break repair is mediated by through either non-homologous end joining (NHEJ) or homologous recombination. NHEJ repairs through direct ligation of a double stranded break while homologous recombination utilizes a homologous template to recover the wild type sequence. A reporter cassette, RYDR-GFP, has been stably integrated into HeLa cells. This reporter contains an ultra-high affinity topoisomerase II cleavage site …

Saved, Sanctified And Filled With Gay Liberation Theology With Aamsm And The Black Church, Adam Green May 2011

Saved, Sanctified And Filled With Gay Liberation Theology With Aamsm And The Black Church, Adam Green

HIM 1990-2015

AAMSM (African American men who have sex with men) endure homophobia and racism in their political realities because of their identity. How do multiple oppressions impact the experiences of AAMSM participating within Black churches? Despite the Black church's legacy for liberating African Americans, AAMSM feel demonized and alienated while enduring religion-based homophobia espoused within many Black churches. In the church, AAMSM are pushed further down the hierarchy of oppression and privilege. In response to these observations, this thesis employs a sexual discourse of resistance. I engage this discourse with a literature review in order to discover links between homophobia and …

The Relationship Between Genre Choice Of Music And Altruistic Behavior, Christine Hippler May 2011

The Relationship Between Genre Choice Of Music And Altruistic Behavior, Christine Hippler

HIM 1990-2015

Extensive research has documented the relationship between listening to certain genres of music and negative effects on social behavior such as aggressive and antisocial behavior. The present study explored whether there are genres of music associated with altruism. Altruistic behavior is defined as behavior that is consistently more caring, helpful, considerate of other's feelings, and self- sacrificing. These behaviors promote our ability to thrive as a community. Yet, few studies have addressed the relationship between music and altruism. Data was collected from 608 college students who completed a self-report altruism scale, music preference measure, the Marlowe Crowne social desirability scale, …

Pre-Screen Of Traits That Lead To Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Krystal A. Lee May 2011

Pre-Screen Of Traits That Lead To Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Krystal A. Lee

HIM 1990-2015

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that is affecting many lives and families. Since it is believed that over 50% of Americans will experience a traumatic event and 25% will experience multiple traumatic events, PTSD is an issue that cannot be overlooked. Although PTSD is most commonly associated with war victims, the official definition of PTSD was stated in the DSM-IV as "an extreme traumatic stressor involving direct personal experience or that involves actual or threatened death or serious injury or other threat to one's physical integrity; or witness to an event that involves death, injury, or a threat …

High Yield Assembly And Electron Transport Investigation Of Semiconducting-Rich Local-Gated Carbon Nanotube Field Effect Transistors, Kristy Kormondy May 2011

High Yield Assembly And Electron Transport Investigation Of Semiconducting-Rich Local-Gated Carbon Nanotube Field Effect Transistors, Kristy Kormondy

HIM 1990-2015

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are ideal for use in nanoelectronic devices because of their high current density, mobility and subthreshold swing. However, assembly methods must be developed to reproducibly align all-semiconducting SWNTs at specific locations with individually addressable gates for future integrated circuits. We show high yield assembly of local-gated semiconducting SWNTs assembled via AC-dielectrophoresis (DEP). Using individual local gates and scaling the gate oxide shows faster switching behavior and lower power consumption. The devices were assembled by DEP between prefabricated Pd source and drain electrodes with a thin Al/Al2O3 gate in the middle, and the electrical characteristics were measured …

Relationships Of Combined Parenting Styles Of Step And Biological Parents In Stepfamily Relationship Formation And Emerging Adult Stepchildren's Adjustment, Saarah Kison May 2011

Relationships Of Combined Parenting Styles Of Step And Biological Parents In Stepfamily Relationship Formation And Emerging Adult Stepchildren's Adjustment, Saarah Kison

HIM 1990-2015

Previous stepfamily research suggested that the parenting styles of biological parents and stepparents are related to children's behavioral adjustment. Scant research also provided evidence of the significance of combined parenting styles on emerging adults' behavioral adjustment. In conjunction with this literature, the scope of the current study served four purposes. First, the current study examined the degree to which parenting styles predict emerging adults' behavioral adjustment. Second, the degree to which biological parent and stepparent parenting styles predict the emerging adult-biological parent and stepparent relationships was examined. Third, the degree to which the emerging adult-biological parent and stepparent relationships predict …

An Exploration Of Materials For Music Integration In Elementary Science Education, Nicole Jennet Mills May 2011

An Exploration Of Materials For Music Integration In Elementary Science Education, Nicole Jennet Mills

HIM 1990-2015

Strong educators always look for different ways to excite and enthrall their students in the curriculum. The field of science education often loses student interest due to the complexities and vocabulary found in the scientific realm. Incorporating music into the classroom has shown positive results as a way to integrate student learning and a different way of facilitating students in the learning process (Brewer, 1992; Davies, 200). Resources for implementing the integration of music and science exist throughout the Internet in a variety of mediums. This study looks at the availability of said resources and the concepts they cover, for …

On Rights A Defense And Analysis Of Rights Through Natural Law, Ramon E. Lopez May 2011

On Rights A Defense And Analysis Of Rights Through Natural Law, Ramon E. Lopez

HIM 1990-2015

One of the central questions in political theory deals with the nature of rights. What sorts of rights do people possess? How are these rights justified? How ought these rights be reflected and related when seen in political, economic, and social institutions? Following the publication of John Rawls' A Theory of Justice (1971) and Robert Nozick's Anarchy, State, and Utopia (1974), rights have once again returned to dominate much of contemporary political theory. However, natural law, which was the historical basis of the early Enlightenment theories of rights, is no longer the primary system appealed to when discussing rights. In …

Intolerance Of Ambiguity And Gender Differences Between Humanists And Normativists, Jorge I. Mendoza May 2011

Intolerance Of Ambiguity And Gender Differences Between Humanists And Normativists, Jorge I. Mendoza

HIM 1990-2015

A study was conducted to test Tomkins' Polarity theory (1963) on the psychological basis for being ideologically liberal or conservative and its relationship with intolerance of ambiguity and gender differences. Normativism, the conservative orientation, was found to have a positive relationship with intolerance for ambiguity. Males were found to be generally less humanist than females. Theoretical background and relevant research is discussed. Suggested applications of this study are to political persuasion, voting behavior, and the psychology of partisanship. This study intends to contribute to the literature on the psychology of ideology, political behavior and ideological differences between men and women.

Examining The Relationship Between Female Parents With Low Perceived Control And Adolescent Child Stress, Brendan P. Monaghan May 2011

Examining The Relationship Between Female Parents With Low Perceived Control And Adolescent Child Stress, Brendan P. Monaghan

HIM 1990-2015

Adolescence is a stressful time for many children. Changes in their environment or changes in social situations are some typical stressors that an adolescent child might encounter. Interactions with parents can also be a stressor for a child. Previous research has shown that a risk factor for a parent using harsh parenting techniques is perceived control. Parents who have low perceived control are at a higher risk to engage in physical parenting techniques or child abuse. This study included 198 middle school students and their female parent or guardian pairs (296 total participants), with the adolescent participants ranging in age …

A Tripartile Biosensor For Real-Time Snss Detection In Dna Hairpin Motif, Camha Nguyen

HIM 1990-2015

The hybridization between two complementary strands of nucleic acid is the basis for a number of applications in DNA and RNA analysis, including in vivo RNA monitoring, microarrays, SNPs detection, and so on. The short oligonucleotide probes form Watson/Crick base pairs (A-T and G-C) with the analyzed nucleic acid. Molecular beacon (MB) probe is one of the most advantageous tools for nucleic acid analysis in real-time. A traditional MB probe consists of a DNA strand folded in hairpin motif with a fluorophore attached to the 5'end and a quencher attached to the 3' end. The loop segment is complementary to …

Plant-Made Oral Vaccines Evaluation Of Capsules, James Stewart New May 2011

Plant-Made Oral Vaccines Evaluation Of Capsules, James Stewart New

HIM 1990-2015

Antigen expression through the Chloroplast Transformation Technology (CTT) produces bioencapsulated subunit-vaccines, capable of eliciting immune responses when delivered orally. Considerable challenges to effective plant-based vaccines are the normalization of dosage and preservation of accumulated antigen, which is complicated by variable high water content and protease activity. This study critically examines the efficacy of lyophilization in dehydrating plant-tissues and preserving plant-derived antigens with vaccine potential. Lyophilization was optimized through gravimetric analysis using lettuce expressing Protective Antigen (PA) of Bacillus anthracis (LS-HPAG) and the human autoantigen Proinsulin (Pins) fused to Cholera toxin subunit B (LS-CTB-Pins). Lyophilization for 48-hours was sufficient treatment to …

Crack Mothers, Crack Babies, And Black Male Dope Dealers Productions Of Deviance During America's Crack Cocaine Panic In The 1980s, Chantelle Yandow May 2011

Crack Mothers, Crack Babies, And Black Male Dope Dealers Productions Of Deviance During America's Crack Cocaine Panic In The 1980s, Chantelle Yandow

HIM 1990-2015

A moral panic erupted during the 1980s among the American public when stories about crack cocaine saturated the media. In this thesis I analyze how discursive productions of deviancy operated in the CBS news documentary: 48 Hours on Crack Street (1986) and other print news sources at that time. Three salient characters that appear in news media discourse during the panic are "crack mothers," "crack babies," and "Black male dope dealers." The news media frightened the public with such representations (among others) and the public urged politicians to get tough on drug crime to control the so-called crack cocaine plague. …

Decolorization Of An Azo And Anthraquinone Textile Dye By A Mixture Of Living And Non-Living Trametes Versicolor Fungus, Christine M. Dykstra May 2011

Decolorization Of An Azo And Anthraquinone Textile Dye By A Mixture Of Living And Non-Living Trametes Versicolor Fungus, Christine M. Dykstra

HIM 1990-2015

Wastewater from the textile industry is difficult to treat effectively due to the prevalent use and wide variety of synthetic dyes that are resistant to conventional treatment methods. White-rot fungi, such as Trametes versicolor, have been found to be effective in decolorizing many of these synthetic dyes and current research is focusing on their application to wastewater treatment. Although numerous studies have been conducted on the ability of both living and nonliving Trametes versicolor to separately decolorize textile dyes, no studies were found to have investigated the use of a mixture of live and dead fungus for decolorization. This study …
