Ant Distribution In Relation To Ground Water In North Florida Pine Flatwoods, Walter R. Tschinkel, Tyler Murdock, Joshua R. King, Christina Kwapich Jan 2012

Ant Distribution In Relation To Ground Water In North Florida Pine Flatwoods, Walter R. Tschinkel, Tyler Murdock, Joshua R. King, Christina Kwapich

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Longleaf pine savannas are one of the most threatened ecosystems in the world, yet are under-studied. Ants are a functionally important and diverse group of insects in these ecosystems. It is largely unknown how local patterns of species diversity and composition are determined through the interaction of this dominant animal group with abiotic features of longleaf pine ecosystems. Here we describe how an important abiotic variable, depth to water table, relates to ant species distributions at local scales. Pitfall trapping studies across habitat gradients in the Florida coastal plains longleaf pine flatwoods showed that the ant community changed with mild …

Use Of Airborne Lidar To Delineate Canopy Degradation And Encroachment Along The Guatemala-Belize Border, John F. Weishampel, Jessica N. Hightower, Arlen F. Chase, Diane Z. Chase Jan 2012

Use Of Airborne Lidar To Delineate Canopy Degradation And Encroachment Along The Guatemala-Belize Border, John F. Weishampel, Jessica N. Hightower, Arlen F. Chase, Diane Z. Chase

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Tropical rainforest clearing and degradation significantly reduces carbon sequestration and increases the rate of biodiversity loss. There has been a concerted international effort to develop remote sensing techniques to monitor broad-scale patterns of forest canopy disturbance. In addition to loss of natural resources, recent deforestation in Mesoamerica threatens historic cultural resources that for centuries lay hidden below the protective canopy. Here, we compare satellite-derived measures of canopy disturbance that occurred over a three decade period since 1980 to those derived from a 2009 airborne LiDAR campaign over the Caracol Archaeological Reserve in western Belize. Scaling up fine-resolution canopy height measures …

Casein Kinase 2 Reverses Tail-Independent Inactivation Of Kinesin-1, Jing Xu, Babu J. N. Reddy, Preetha Anand, Zhanyong Shu, Silvia Cermelli, Michelle K. Mattson, Suvranta K. Tripathy, Matthew T. Hoss, Nikita S. James, Stephen J. King, Lan Huang, Lee Bardwell, Steven P. Gross

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Kinesin-1 is a plus-end microtubule-based motor, and defects in kinesin-based transport are linked to diseases including neurodegeneration. Kinesin can auto-inhibit via a head-tail interaction, but is believed to be active otherwise. Here we report a tail-independent inactivation of kinesin, reversible by the disease-relevant signalling protein, casein kinase 2 (CK2). The majority of initially active kinesin (native or tail-less) loses its ability to interact with microtubules in vitro, and CK2 reverses this inactivation (approximately fourfold) without altering kinesin's single motor properties. This activation pathway does not require motor phosphorylation, and is independent of head-tail auto-inhibition. In cultured mammalian cells, reducing CK2 …

Liquid Crystal Micro-Lenticular Array Assembled By A Fringing Field, Miao Xu, Hongwen Ren, Changwoon Nah, Seung Hee Lee, Yifan Liu Jan 2012

Liquid Crystal Micro-Lenticular Array Assembled By A Fringing Field, Miao Xu, Hongwen Ren, Changwoon Nah, Seung Hee Lee, Yifan Liu

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Based on dielectrophoretic effect, the phase separation morphology of liquid crystal ( LC) in a liquid monomer can be manipulated by a fringing field. Applying the fringing field generated from interdigitated electrode upon the LC/monomer mixture, the randomly dispersed LC droplets can be assembled to grating-like stripes. When the field is removed, the LC stripes break into tiny droplets again. This process is reversible and stable. Our results show that the surface profile of each LC stripe exhibits a lenticular shape. The response time of the LC morphology converting from droplets to stripes and from stripes to droplets is similar …

Processing, Characterization And Performance Of Carbon Nanopaper Based Multifunctional Nanocomposites, Fei Liang Jan 2012

Processing, Characterization And Performance Of Carbon Nanopaper Based Multifunctional Nanocomposites, Fei Liang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) used as nano-scale reinforcement have been extensively studied since they are capable of improving the physical and mechanical properties of conventional fiber reinforced polymer composites. However, the properties of CNFs are far away from being fully utilized in the composites due to processing challenges including the dispersion of CNFs and the viscosity increase of polymer matrix. To overcome these issues, a unique approach was developed by making carbon nanopaper sheet through the filtration of well-dispersed carbon nanofibers under controlled processing conditions, and integrating carbon nanopaper sheets into composite laminates using autoclave process and resin transfer molding (RTM). …

The Self-Described Experience Of Coping And Adaptation Associated With Workplace Stress Of Registered Nurses In The Acute Care Setting In Florida: An Ethnographic Study, Joyce Burr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Little is known about how nurses learn and use coping and adaptation skills in the workplace. Quantitative studies have identified the factors, nature, and outcomes of nursing stress. However, qualitative studies describing the human experience associated with workplace stress are lacking. The phenomenon of interest for this study using focused ethnographic method is the self-described experience of coping and adaptation associated with workplace stress of registered nurses working 12-hour shifts employed in acute care hospital facilities in east central and central Florida. Three aspects of the phenomena were examined: the self-described experiences of stress, the manner in which coping skills …

Understanding The Role Of Defects In The Radiation Response Of Nanoceria, Amit Kumar Jan 2012

Understanding The Role Of Defects In The Radiation Response Of Nanoceria, Amit Kumar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nanoscale cerium oxide (nanoceria) have shown to possess redox active property , and has been widely studied for potential use in catalysis, chemical-mechanical planarization, biomedical and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), etc. The redox state of nanoceria can be tuned by controlling the defects within the lattice and thus its physical and chemical properties. Perfect ceria lattice has fluorite structure and the research in last decade has shown that oxide and mixed oxide systems with pyrochlore and fluorite have better structural stability under high energy radiation. However, the current literature shows a limited number of studies on the effect of …

The Extension Of Imperial Authority Under Diocletian And The Tetrarchy, 285-305ce, Joshua Petitt Jan 2012

The Extension Of Imperial Authority Under Diocletian And The Tetrarchy, 285-305ce, Joshua Petitt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Despite a vast amount of research on Late Antiquity, little attention has been paid to certain figures that prove to be influential during this time. The focus of historians on Constantine I, the first Roman Emperor to allegedly convert to Christianity, has often come at the cost of ignoring Constantine's predecessor, Diocletian, sometimes known as the "Second Father of the Roman Empire". The success of Constantine's empire has often been attributed to the work and reforms of Diocletian, but there have been very few studies of the man beyond simple biography. This work will attempt to view three of Diocletian's …

Design, Synthesis, And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Polyamine Transport System Probes And Their Application To Human Cancers, Aaron Muth Jan 2012

Design, Synthesis, And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Polyamine Transport System Probes And Their Application To Human Cancers, Aaron Muth

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The mammalian polyamine transport system (PTS) has been of interest due to its roles in cancer and maintaining cellular homeostasis. Polyamines are essential growth factors which are tightly controlled via a balance of biosynthesis, metabolism, import, and export. This work focused on the development and biological testing of polyamine transport probes to help understand the molecular requirements of the PTS. This was mediated through the use of a CHO (PTS active) and CHO-MG* (PTS deficient) screen, where compounds demonstrating high toxicity in CHO and low toxicity in CHO-MG* were considered PTS selective. The first chapter focused on the development of …

Use Of An Activated Magnesium/Cosolvent System For The Desorption And Degradation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Their Oxygenated Derivatives In Contaminated Soils, Marc Elie Jan 2012

Use Of An Activated Magnesium/Cosolvent System For The Desorption And Degradation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons And Their Oxygenated Derivatives In Contaminated Soils, Marc Elie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The contamination of soils, with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), remains a widespread environmental concern. In the past two decades, many physical, chemical and biological methods have been developed and evaluated for the degradation of PAHs. However, due to their low aqueous solubility, high sorption affinity, hydrophobicity and recalcitrance, the environmental remediation of PAHs in soil continues to be economically challenging. In addition to PAH contamination, the presence of oxygenated derivatives of PAHs (OPAHs), in soils, has increasingly become a concern due to their greater toxic properties compared to parent PAH compounds. To date, no investigations on OPAH-remediation methods have been …

The Sacrament Of Violence: Myth And War In C.S. Lewis's Ransom Trilogy, Tanya Engelhardt Jan 2012

The Sacrament Of Violence: Myth And War In C.S. Lewis's Ransom Trilogy, Tanya Engelhardt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My primary aim for this study is to illuminate the Ransom trilogy's inherent psychological and spiritual themes, as well as demonstrate how these themes clarify Lewis's philosophical and political goals for the text. Specifically, by investigating Lewis's mythic imagery and suffering motifs in light of psychoanalytic and theological literary criticisms, I elucidate the reasoning behind Lewis's unique—and at times, horrific—portrayal of fear, violence, and death. I also investigate how Lewis integrates his theology with the horrors of personal and intrapersonal suffering, as well as how he utilizes imagination and myth to explicate the practical (or political) implications of his theodicy. …

The Relationship Between Caregiver Intimate Partner Violence, Posttraumatic Stress, Child Cognitive Self-Development, And Treatment Attrition Among Child Sexual Abuse Victims., Leigh De Delorenzi Jan 2012

The Relationship Between Caregiver Intimate Partner Violence, Posttraumatic Stress, Child Cognitive Self-Development, And Treatment Attrition Among Child Sexual Abuse Victims., Leigh De Delorenzi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a worldwide problem, with two-thirds of all cases going unreported. A wealth of research over the last 30 years demonstrates the negative emotional, cognitive, physical, spiritual, academic, and social effects of CSA. As a result, researchers and mental health professionals frequently attempt to measure the efficacy of treatment modalities in order to assess which treatments lead to better outcomes. However, in order to effectively study treatment outcomes, researchers must be able to track the status of child functioning and symptomology before, during, and after treatment. Because high levels of treatment attrition exist among CSA victims, …

Engaging And Enacting Writing In First-Year Composition: Re-Imagining Student Self-Efficacy In Writing, Mary L. Tripp Jan 2012

Engaging And Enacting Writing In First-Year Composition: Re-Imagining Student Self-Efficacy In Writing, Mary L. Tripp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

According to educational theory, learning to write necessitates self-belief that one is capable of performing required tasks. This belief is called self-efficacy, a component of human agency. Students who enter First-Year Composition (FYC), are often unaware of the writing challenges that lie ahead, and many educational psychologists posit that self-efficacy beliefs are the most important factor in meeting these writing challenges. While socio-cognitive theory shapes views of self-efficacy in education literature, to date, measures of self-efficacy in writing have focused only on the individual cognitive beliefs as they influence writing performance outcomes. However, current research in writing studies as well …

Protection Of The Female Reproductive Tract In The Prevention Of Hiv, Camila Diaz Jan 2012

Protection Of The Female Reproductive Tract In The Prevention Of Hiv, Camila Diaz

HIM 1990-2015

Worldwide, more than half of all HIV-infected individuals are women. Since mucosal surfaces are the primary gateway for HIV entry, maintaining the integrity of the female reproductive tract (FRT) is essential for preventing infection. The FRT employs many immune mechanisms that serve as the first line of defense against HIV transmission. Among these are vaginal fluid secretions rich in antimicrobial peptides, and commensal bacteria that colonize the vagina and prevent infections. We sought to study vaginal fluid as an innate immune component of the FRT in the prevention of HIV infection. Additionally, we investigated the anti-HIV microbicide candidate RC-101 as …

Physiological Relevance Of A Trna-Dependent Mechanism For Membrane Modification In Enterococcus Faecium, Jesse Harrison Jan 2012

Physiological Relevance Of A Trna-Dependent Mechanism For Membrane Modification In Enterococcus Faecium, Jesse Harrison

HIM 1990-2015

Enterococci were once thought to be harmless, commensal organisms that colonize the gastrointestinal tract of humans and other mammals. In the last 30 years, however, concern has grown in the clinical setting over two particular species, Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium, which are frequently found to be the etiologic agents of nosocomial infections. Aminoacyl-phosphatidylglycerol synthases (aaPGSs) are integral membrane proteins that add amino acids to phosphatidylglycerol (PG) in the cellular envelope of bacteria. Addition of amino acids to PG confers resistance to various therapeutic antimicrobial agents, and contributes to evasion of the host immune response in a number of clinically …

A Case Of Double Conciousness Americo-Liberians And Indigenous Liberian Relations 1840-1930, Genesys Santana Jan 2012

A Case Of Double Conciousness Americo-Liberians And Indigenous Liberian Relations 1840-1930, Genesys Santana

HIM 1990-2015

This study argues that the formation of Americo-Liberian identity overwhelmingly relied on White American middle class cultural values despite the founders' criticisms and rejection of racial oppression and slavery. Americo-Liberians' previous participation in a culture that downgrades African heritage fostered the internalization of Western notions of civilization and African inferiority that led them to establish an oppressive regime similar to the one they had escaped from, and even enslaved the indigenous population, which they considered "uncivilized." The study thus investigates how formerly oppressed and enslaved blacks became oppressors and enslavers of other black people in the name of a "civilizing …

Social Experience, Depression, And Alcohol Abuse In College Age Females, Ann Cooper Jan 2012

Social Experience, Depression, And Alcohol Abuse In College Age Females, Ann Cooper

HIM 1990-2015

Past research has explored social experience in relation to depression among college females. Other studies have investigated the relationship between social experience and alcohol use among college students. However, there is a lack of research on the relationship among all the three variables, social experience, depression, and alcohol use, in female college students. In the present study, 132 traditional age female college students completed a Brief Social Experience Rating Scale, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT). The results did not show a relationship between AUDIT scores and social experience ratings, but individuals who …

Deoxycytidine Kinase Regulates The G2/M Checkpoint Through Interaction With Cyclin-Dependent Kinase 1 In Response To Dna Damage, Chunying Yang, Michael Lee, Jianwei Hao, Xiaoli Cui, Xiaojing Guo, Caroline Smal, Francoise Bontemps, Shumei Ma, Xiaodong Liu, David Engler, William B. Parker, Bo Xu

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Deoxycytidine kinase (dCK) is a rate limiting enzyme critical for phosphorylation of endogenous deoxynucleosides for DNA synthesis and exogenous nucleoside analogues for anticancer and antiviral drug actions. dCK is activated in response to DNA damage; however, how it functions in the DNA damage response is largely unknown. Here, we report that dCK is required for the G2/M checkpoint in response to DNA damage induced by ionizing radiation (IR). We demonstrate that the ataxia-telangiectasia-mutated (ATM) kinase phosphorylates dCK on Serine 74 to activate it in response to DNA damage. We further demonstrate that Serine 74 phosphorylation is required for initiation of …

Mcp-1 Induced Protein Promotes Adipogenesis Via Oxidative Stress, Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress And Autophagy, Craig Younce, Pappachan Kolattukudy

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Obesity involves inflammation. MCP-1, an inflammatory chemokine, and MCP-1-induced protein (MCPIP) are known to induce adipogenesis that causes increase in the number of adipocytes. Here we elucidate the intermediate processes through which MCPIP induces adipogenesis. Forced expression of MCPIP in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes caused increased reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) production and inducible-nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression, endoplasnnic reticulum stress (ER), as indicated by expression of ER chaperones and protein disulfide isomerase, and autophagy as indicated by expression of beclin-1 and cleavage of LC3. Treatment of ROS inhibitor, apocynin attenuated MCPIP induction of adipogenesis as measured by the induction of transcription factors …

Multifractal Analysis Of Solar Flare Indices And Their Horizontal Visibility Graphs, Z. G. Yu, V. Anh, R. Eastes, D. L. Wang Jan 2012

Multifractal Analysis Of Solar Flare Indices And Their Horizontal Visibility Graphs, Z. G. Yu, V. Anh, R. Eastes, D. L. Wang

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

The multifractal properties of the daily solar X-ray brightness, X-l and X-s, during the period from 1 January 1986 to 31 December 2007 which includes two solar cycles are examined using the universal multifractal approach and multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis. Then we convert these time series into networks using the horizontal visibility graph technique. Multifractal analysis of the resulting networks is performed using an algorithm proposed by us. The results from the multifractal analysis show that multifractality exists in both raw daily time series of X-ray brightness and their horizontal visibility graphs. It is also found that the empirical K(q) …

Trapping And Rotating Microparticles And Bacteria With Moire-Based Optical Propelling Beams, Peng Zhang, Daniel Hernandez, Drake Cannan, Yi Hu, Shima Fardad, Simon Huang, Joseph C. Chen, Demetrios N. Christodoulides, Zhigang Chen

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

We propose and demonstrate trapping and rotation of microparticles and biological samples with a moire-based rotating optical tweezers. We show that polystyrene beads, as well as Escherichia coli cells, can be rotated with ease, while the speed and direction of rotation are fully controllable by a computer, obviating mechanical movement or phase-sensitive interference. Furthermore, we demonstrate experimentally the generation of white-light propelling beams and arrays, and discuss the possibility of optical tweezing and particle micro-manipulation based on incoherent white-light rotating patterns.

Orally Bioavailable Small-Molecule Inhibitor Of Transcription Factor Stat3 Regresses Human Breast And Lung Cancer Xenografts, Xiaolei Zhang, Peibin Yue, Brent D. G. Page, Tianshu Li, Wei Zhao, Andrew T. Namanja, David Paladino, Jihe Zhao, Yuan Chen, Patrick T. Gunning, James Turkson

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Computer-aided lead optimization derives a unique, orally bioavailable inhibitor of the signal transducer and activator of transcription (Stat)3 Src homology 2 domain. BP-1-102 binds Stat3 with an affinity (K-D) of 504 nM, blocks Stat3-phospho-tyrosine (pTyr) peptide interactions and Stat3 activation at 4-6.8 mu M, and selectively inhibits growth, survival, migration, and invasion of Stat3-dependent tumor cells. BP-1-102-mediated inhibition of aberrantly active Stat3 in tumor cells suppresses the expression of c-Myc, Cyclin D1, Bcl- xL, Survivin, VEGF, and Kruppel-like factor 8, which is identified as a Stat3 target gene that promotes Stat3-mediated breast tumor cell migration and invasion. Treatment of breast …

Observation Of Trapping And Transporting Air-Borne Absorbing Particles With A Single Optical Beam, Ze Zhang, Drake Cannan, Jingjiao Liu, Peng Zhang, Demetrios N. Christodoulides, Zhigang Chen Jan 2012

Observation Of Trapping And Transporting Air-Borne Absorbing Particles With A Single Optical Beam, Ze Zhang, Drake Cannan, Jingjiao Liu, Peng Zhang, Demetrios N. Christodoulides, Zhigang Chen

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

We demonstrate optical trapping and manipulation of micron-sized absorbing air-borne particles with a single focused Gaussian beam. Transportation of trapped nonspherical particles from one beam to another is realized, and the underlying mechanism for the trapping is discussed by considering the combined action of several forces. By employing a specially-designed optical bottle beam, we observe stable trapping and optical transportation of light-absorbing particles from one container to another that is less susceptible to ambient perturbation.

Clustering Rna Structural Motifs In Ribosomal Rnas Using Secondary Structural Alignment, Cuncong Zhong, Shaojie Zhang Jan 2012

Clustering Rna Structural Motifs In Ribosomal Rnas Using Secondary Structural Alignment, Cuncong Zhong, Shaojie Zhang

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

RNA structural motifs are the building blocks of the complex RNA architecture. Identification of non-coding RNA structural motifs is a critical step towards understanding of their structures and functionalities. In this article, we present a clustering approach for de novo RNA structural motif identification. We applied our approach on a data set containing 5S, 16S and 23S rRNAs and rediscovered many known motifs including GNRA tetraloop, kink-turn, C-loop, sarcin-ricin, reverse kink-turn, hook-turn, E-loop and tandem-sheared motifs, with higher accuracy than the state-of-the-art clustering method. We also identified a number of potential novel instances of GNRA tetraloop, kink-turn, sarcin-ricin and tandem-sheared …
