Exploring Mdma And Its Therapeutic Potential, Michael Christian May 2012

Exploring Mdma And Its Therapeutic Potential, Michael Christian

HIM 1990-2015

The clinical application of MDMA has long been an issue of great interest for doctors, counselors, researchers, and users alike. Originally synthesized by a pharmaceutical company and subsequently tested on military personnel, the drug was then used by many clinicians and physicians prior to the DEA's strict regulation of the drug, which began in the mid 1980s (Mithoefer et al, 2010). The DEA has classified MDMA a "Schedule 1" drug, which means that it among the most controlled substances, a fact which has hindered the progress of research. For a detailed explanation of the DEA's scheduling of controlled substances, please …

Gold (Iii) Macrocycles Are Dna Intercalators That Inhibit Topoisomerase I And Ii, Alexander Fagenson May 2012

Gold (Iii) Macrocycles Are Dna Intercalators That Inhibit Topoisomerase I And Ii, Alexander Fagenson

HIM 1990-2015

Human Topoisomerase IB (TOP1) and Topoisomerase II? (TOP2?) are essential nuclear enzymes that control DNA topology during DNA replication, gene transcription and cell division. These enzymes carry out their catalytic function by making transient single-strand (type I) or double-strand (type II) breaks in the DNA. In vivo, these complexes are short-lived but can be exploited by anti-cancer drugs to mechanistically kill cancer cells. Two general classes of compounds can kill cancer cells through a topo-targeted mechanism. Interfacial Poisons (IFPs) act at the enzyme-DNA interface to inhibit the religation reaction, resulting in the accumulation of DNA double-stand breaks (DSBs) in the …

Design, Construction, And Characterization Of The Ysgr Minimal Codon Fab Library For Chaperone-Assisted Rna Crystallography, Sean Holmes May 2012

Design, Construction, And Characterization Of The Ysgr Minimal Codon Fab Library For Chaperone-Assisted Rna Crystallography, Sean Holmes

HIM 1990-2015

Of the entire human genome, 90% of all genetic information is transcribed but only a fraction of that subsequent RNA is translated into proteins. RNAs which are not translated into proteins are deemed non-coding RNAs. Little is known about this large category of noncoding RNAs, although they perform a variety of functions within the cell. RNA crystallography is used to study RNA tertiary structure, which gives insight to the function of these non-coding RNAs. However, complications associated with RNA crystallography arise due to RNA's lack of surface functional group diversity, flexible tertiary structure, and conformational heterogeneity. A novel technique, Chaperone-assisted …

Determination Of The Biological Sex Of Juveniles Based Upon The Odontometrics Of The Primary Dentition, Kendall Mccollough May 2012

Determination Of The Biological Sex Of Juveniles Based Upon The Odontometrics Of The Primary Dentition, Kendall Mccollough

HIM 1990-2015

Sex determination in human skeletal remains is difficult under the most ideal circumstances; however, in juvenile skeletal remains it is nearly impossible. Currently no accepted techniques exist to identify the biological sex of the juvenile skeleton, other than, when possible, DNA. Thus, developing an accessible and non-destructive technique would benefit both the field of Forensic Anthropology and Bioarchaeology. The ability to provide a quick and accurate determination of sex would greatly expedite the identification process in any case where juvenile skeletal remains are involved. This project aims to establish an accessible and non-destructive method for determining the sex of juvenile …

Health Care Providers' Perspectives On Male Involvement In Their Sexual And Reproductive Health Care Needs, Lilian Milanes May 2012

Health Care Providers' Perspectives On Male Involvement In Their Sexual And Reproductive Health Care Needs, Lilian Milanes

HIM 1990-2015

Young men are at the greatest risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) within the U.S. male populations, yet are the least likely to make a sexual and reproductive health (SRH) care visit. Clinical approaches in these areas that include the outreach to and the involvement of male partners of female patients can prove particularly useful in expanding SRH care to men and can also improve health outcomes for women who have sex with men. In this study I examined UCF's healthcare provider's approaches to educate and involve men (between the ages of 18 and 30) and male partners of …

Determination Of The Hydrogen Peroxide Concentration In Rotenone Induced Dopaminergic Cells Using Cyclic Voltammetry And Amplex Red, Kishan Patel

HIM 1990-2015

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative condition that affects millions of people worldwide. The exact etiology of PD is unknown. However, it is well established that environmental factors contribute to the onset of PD. In particular, chemicals such as the insecticide Rotenone have been shown to increase the death of dopaminergic (DA) neurons by increasing levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) have been shown to be elevated above basal levels in PD patients. Currently, to measure H2O2 concentrations, a commercially available (Amplex® Red) fluorescent assay is used. However, the assay has limitations: it is …

Embodied Abstraction In Cinema Virtual Prosthesis And Forests Of Light, Jon M. Perez May 2012

Embodied Abstraction In Cinema Virtual Prosthesis And Forests Of Light, Jon M. Perez

HIM 1990-2015

Our impressions of this lifeworld are contingent upon our ability to see (in every conflicting meaning of the word). This paper reviews a body of scholars who often share disparate, "incompatible" ontological commitments in effort to examine how their ordering of concepts may reveal a deeper fluidity and permeability between all states of inquiry, creation and investigation into Being and Time. It begins with perspective, examining our subjective presence in the context of the camera apparatus and considers how the mirroring of mechanical instrumentation, namely the rotary shutter and optics of the camera has limited the true function of the …

American Revolutionary Thinkers Unjust Wars, Limited Government And Natural Rights, Adam Spera May 2012

American Revolutionary Thinkers Unjust Wars, Limited Government And Natural Rights, Adam Spera

HIM 1990-2015

Historically unjust wars have never improved the standard of living for the American citizen and have served to suppress the inherent natural rights of the human beings involved. In conclusion, I combine contemporary and historical arguments to highlight the continuing stream of injustice that exists in American foreign policy.; The conceptual bases of this thesis include the philosophical constructs of Just War Theory, limited government, and natural rights as applied to foreign policy. Just War Theory was originally articulated by St. Augustine and represents the requirements a nation must satisfy to wage war justly. Building upon the basis of Just …

Resurrecting Inanna: Lament, Gender, Transgression, Kimberly Torres May 2012

Resurrecting Inanna: Lament, Gender, Transgression, Kimberly Torres

HIM 1990-2015

This essay, which is at once a literary critical examination and a theological exploration of the Hebraic scriptural book of Lamentations in relation to ancient Sumerian lament, employs a mixed critical approach (e.g., form, feminist, postmodern, reader response), to address various lyrical, contextual, and thematic elements common to both the biblical Lamentations and the older Sumerian compositions. Specific focus is given to issues of gender and gender-malleability, as well as the notion of "transgression" and the various meanings that may be attached to this word in various contexts, theological or otherwise. Also addressed is the means by which the lament …

Cognitive Theory A Qualitative Comparison Of The George W. Bush Administration And The Barack H.Obama Administration, Shelley Urbanovich May 2012

Cognitive Theory A Qualitative Comparison Of The George W. Bush Administration And The Barack H.Obama Administration, Shelley Urbanovich

HIM 1990-2015

Although Republicans and Democrats frequently disagree ideologically, the leaders of both parties share one commonality in particular--they inevitably make flawed judgments. To adequately understand the extent to which psychological filters act as a fundamental factor in decision making, this thesis shall analyze current political events and observe how partisans within both administrations deal with information incompatible with their own values and beliefs. Specifically referencing the war in Iraq, weapons of mass destruction (WMDs), civil unrest, national security, the national economic climate, and the housing market, this study examines the way leaders deal differently with conflicting information. Although all subjects in …

Isolation And Characterization Of A Novel Substrate For The Pro-Apoptotic Omi/Htra2 Protease, Nathan Ward May 2012

Isolation And Characterization Of A Novel Substrate For The Pro-Apoptotic Omi/Htra2 Protease, Nathan Ward

HIM 1990-2015

Omi, also known as HtrA2, is a mammalian pro-apoptotic mitochondrial protein and a member of the HtrA (high temperature requirement A) family of serine proteases. Omi promotes the caspase-dependent apoptotic pathway through cleavage of IAPs (inhibitor of apoptosis proteins); this cleavage inactivates IAPs and facilitates caspase activity. Omi's proteolytic activity is necessary and essential for its pro-apoptotic function. This study is aimed to further understand the role of Omi in the cytoplasm by using the yeast two-hybrid system to identify novel Omi interactors/substrates. A HeLa (cervical carcinoma cell line) cDNA library was screened using Omi as a "bait" protein. One …

Development Of Luminescent Ruthenium Complexes For In-Vitro Fluorescence Imaging Of Angiogenesis With The Rgd Peptide, Rosemary Victoria May 2012

Development Of Luminescent Ruthenium Complexes For In-Vitro Fluorescence Imaging Of Angiogenesis With The Rgd Peptide, Rosemary Victoria

HIM 1990-2015

Herein we report the synthesis of an RGD-ruthenium bipyridine [Ru(Bpy)2(BpyRGD)]2+ complex aimed at the detection of angiogenesis. Angiogenesis plays a critical role in many pathophysiological processes, such as tumor growth. The αv-integrins (αv[beta]3, αv[beta]5) are currently used as molecular targeting sites for anti-angiogenic therapies. The [Ru(Bpy)2(BpyRGD)]2+ complex is an organometallic luminescent probe, which enables noninvasive, in vitro imaging of αv[beta]3 expression. Peptides containing the arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) sequence have been shown to bind strongly to the αvb3 integrin. The RuBpy probes are soluble in water, display long lifetimes, and are photochemically stable. These properties enable the Ru(tris-bpy) complexes to be …

A Contact Analysis Of Caldecott Medal And Honor Books From 2001-2011 Examining Gender Issues And Equity In 21st Century Children's Picture Books, Nicole Yello

HIM 1990-2015

An abundance of research has been conducted about the importance of including books and literature as part of a young child's developmental process. Much of this research suggests that picture books are vital to a young child's healthy development and "are important influences that shape us by reflecting the politics and values of our society" (Fox, 1993, p. 656). This study was completed to analyze character roles and gender representation of male and female characters exclusively in children's picture books. The entire population of Caldecott Award and Honor Medal books published between 2001 and 2011 was utilized for a frequency …

Identification Of Plasmodium Falciparum Protein Kinase Substrates And Interacting Proteins, Jessica Yap May 2012

Identification Of Plasmodium Falciparum Protein Kinase Substrates And Interacting Proteins, Jessica Yap

HIM 1990-2015

Characterization of PfPKA and PfPK5 substrates, as well as the proteins they interact with, will help us to develop innovative therapies targeting binding sites.; Malaria is a devastating disease that results in almost one million deaths annually. Most of the victims are children under the age of five in Sub-Saharan Africa. Malaria parasite strains throughout developing countries are continually building resistance to available drugs. Current therapies such as mefloquine, chloroquine, as well as artemisinin are becoming less effective, and this underscores the urgency for therapeutics directed against novel drug targets. In order to identify new drug targets, the molecular biology …

The Nature Of Love A Phenomenological Approach, Samantha Schroeder May 2012

The Nature Of Love A Phenomenological Approach, Samantha Schroeder

HIM 1990-2015

As I hope to show, a philosophical study of love is highly relevant today, since the sciences have not adequately answered the perennial question: What is love?; Since the time of Socrates, the idea of love and the conception of the human heart have been devalued by thinkers who, by definition, are known as "lovers of wisdom." Considered pejoratively as "the passions," the subject of emotion was deemed inferior to thought centered upon the human faculty of reason. Many studies in the sciences, from biology to psychology, claim to have pointed us to the source of the human experience of …

And It's Also The Smell Of Laundry, Rachel Miranda May 2012

And It's Also The Smell Of Laundry, Rachel Miranda

HIM 1990-2015

This collection of poems brings to life the idea that in a poet's world, every day life and every single occurrence is a possible subject. Included are works brought on from the worst of circumstances, the youngest of memories, the happiest moments, and even the simplest of thoughts. The collection is autobiographical and reflective, a re-creation of the events taken place with the addition of present knowledge. The work here gives proof to the idea of cohesion between content and art form--it proves the notion that how something is being said is just as, if not more, important than what …

Samphire A Novella, Hillary Casavant May 2012

Samphire A Novella, Hillary Casavant

HIM 1990-2015

Engulfed by the tumultuous 1960s, seventeen-year-old Katherine Dayes conceals her pregnancy from the conservative seaside community of Samphire, her hometown. The novella traces a year in Katherine's life, from her summer of love through a winter stained by blood and moonlight. Throughout the story, Katherine endures the push and pull of a culture torn between tradition, represented by community leader Margaret Blythe, and modernism, embodied by the free spirit Evelyn Partridge. Inspired by the life of an actual eighteenth-century woman, Samphire explores the complexities of the 1960s feminist movement. Using vivid imagery of natural elements, it examines opposing views of …

Diffraction Free, Self-Bending Airy Wave Arrangement, Aristide Dogariu, Demetrios Christodoulides, Georgios Siviloglou Jan 2012

Diffraction Free, Self-Bending Airy Wave Arrangement, Aristide Dogariu, Demetrios Christodoulides, Georgios Siviloglou

UCF Patents

Methods and systems for Airy waves and wavepackets or beams having all the advantages of a diffraction-free or dispersion free wave but at the same time, its intensity features accelerate or self-bend during propagation. These beams can perform ballistic dynamics akin to projectiles moving under the action of gravity. The Airy waves are highly asymmetric and as a result their energy is more tightly confined in one quadrant thus increasing the energy density in the main lobes. These wavepackets can be one, two, and three-dimensional waves. In addition they tend to self-heal themselves which is important in adverse environments.
