Floating Wetland Systems For Nutrient Removal In Stormwater Ponds, Ni-Bin Chang, Martin Wanielista, Manoj Chopra Sep 2012

Floating Wetland Systems For Nutrient Removal In Stormwater Ponds, Ni-Bin Chang, Martin Wanielista, Manoj Chopra

BMP Trains Research and Publications

Wet detention ponds are frequently used in stormwater management systems as part of a treatment train for attenuation of flow and removal of pollutants. Wet detention ponds designed and operated according to commonly used standards and specifications remove nutrients but the removal of nitrogen has remained low, about 30-40% concentration reduction on a yearly basis. A Floating Treatment Wetland (FTW) composed of selected plants suspended in a wet detention pond was proposed in this research to improve the removal of nutrients before discharge from a pond.

Healing Hands Reviewing The Potential Applications Of Energy Therapies To Redirect Pain During Labor And Childbirth, Cecilia Dinh Aug 2012

Healing Hands Reviewing The Potential Applications Of Energy Therapies To Redirect Pain During Labor And Childbirth, Cecilia Dinh

HIM 1990-2015

The birth experience is a highly subjective phenomenon that leaves a lasting impression for mothers and their families and friends. Although the passage of a child from the mother's womb into the world is typically joyous, the experience is not always as positive. Negative physical and psychological factors may greatly impact a woman's impression of the childbirth experience. Among childbearing women, the two main concerns of childbirth are pain and safe management. Similarly among healthcare providers, management of labor pain is one of the main goals of maternity care. Pain is a highly subjective phenomenon that is expected during the …

Minimizing Incivility In The Workplace To Increase Retention Of New Graduate Nurses, Amanda D'Ambra Aug 2012

Minimizing Incivility In The Workplace To Increase Retention Of New Graduate Nurses, Amanda D'Ambra

HIM 1990-2015

Efforts to maintain a sufficient nurse workforce are hampered by dissatisfaction with the work environment. Incivility in the work environment is a major source of dissatisfaction. A healthy work environment is associated with higher levels of job satisfaction and improved retention. New graduate transition programs have been recommended as a deterrent to high levels of turnover associated within the first two years of employment, some of which is related to incivility. The purpose of this thesis was to examine the influence of incivility in the nursing workplace on new graduate job satisfaction and determine if there is an association between …

Title: Spiritual Care Interventions and Quality of Life in Cancer Patients Receiving Palliative Care Background: Despite the evidence supporting spiritual care in nursing and an increased quality of life among patients, patients feel that their spiritual needs are not being supported by medical professionals. Nurses agree that the role they play is significant in addressing the needs of cancer patients; however, they feel that they lack the knowledge for addressing spirituality concerns at the end of life. The purpose of this study is to identify spiritual care interventions that nurses can implement to improve quality of life (QOL) in patients …

Amyloid-Beta42 Toxicity Reduction In Human Neuroblastoma Cells Using Cholera Toxin B Subunit-Myelin Basic Protein Expressed In Chloroplasts, Alexandra Ayache Aug 2012

Amyloid-Beta42 Toxicity Reduction In Human Neuroblastoma Cells Using Cholera Toxin B Subunit-Myelin Basic Protein Expressed In Chloroplasts, Alexandra Ayache

HIM 1990-2015

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age progressive neurodegenerative brain disorder, affecting 37 million people worldwide. Cleavage of amyloid precursor protein by ?- and ?-secretase produces the amyloid-beta (A?) protein, which significantly contributes to AD pathogenesis. The A? aggregates, formed at the surface of neurons and intracellularly, cause neurotoxicity and decrease synaptic function. Inhibiting or degrading A? accumulation is a key goal for development of new AD treatments. Evidence shows that human Myelin Basic Protein (MBP) binds to and degrades A? thereby, preventing cytotoxicity. A potential method for oral drug delivery that will allow plant-derived bioencapsulated MBP to pass through intestinal …

Multiple Aspects Of Natural Killer Cell Expansion In Relevance To Immunotherapy For Hematologic Malignancies, Dominic Colosimo Aug 2012

Multiple Aspects Of Natural Killer Cell Expansion In Relevance To Immunotherapy For Hematologic Malignancies, Dominic Colosimo

HIM 1990-2015

Natural Killer (NK) cells are a subset of lymphocytes that regulate adaptive immune responses and utilize "missing self" recognition to activate anti-tumor and anti-viral cytotoxicity. Clinical research, as well as murine and ex vivo models, have shown that a variety of NK cell applications have proven useful as immunotherapeutic treatments for patients with hematologic malignancies. However, the selective expansion of NK cells to yield relevant amounts of these lymphocytes has been a major hurdle in the development of methods for clinical therapeutic use. Here, we demonstrate a novel ex vivo expansion method utilizing k562 leukemic cell lines and soluble cytokines …

Has The Pendulum Swung Too Far? A Legal Evaluation Of Florida's Child Abuse And Neglect Registry, Julianna Debler Aug 2012

Has The Pendulum Swung Too Far? A Legal Evaluation Of Florida's Child Abuse And Neglect Registry, Julianna Debler

HIM 1990-2015

Over the past several years, increasing public emphasis on preventing child maltreatment has resulted in substantial changes to Florida's child abuse and neglect central registry. Many of these recent changes, aimed at preventing child maltreatment, have resulted in over one million false, unsubstantiated, and inconclusive reports of child abuse and neglect within the last decade. While the information held in reports may be useful for identifying and preventing potential child abuse or neglect, due process concerns have been raised with regards to the process of placing a person's name in a report without providing a hearing for challenging or removing …

Signals The Interplay Between Literacy, Gender, And Semiotics, Patricia Parker Aug 2012

Signals The Interplay Between Literacy, Gender, And Semiotics, Patricia Parker

HIM 1990-2015

The purpose of this study is to examine adult literacy beyond its constraints as a social problem and instead consider the implications of illiteracy as a particular form of lived experience, analogous to women's oppression at large. Through a complex system of meaning making, the knowledge accrued by illiterate adults is qualitatively different, and examining these differences in terms of their correlation to coping mechanisms developed in the face of social alienation and diminished professional prospects yields a greater understanding of class privilege and how nontraditional learners fit into a larger social structure. From the perspective of academic feminism, adult …

Victims Of More Than Just Bias Gender's Influence On Jury Awards And Other Monetary Benefits In Workplace Sexual Harassment Claims, Anthony Ferraro

HIM 1990-2015

The main objective in this research was to examine the extent to which gender and gender biases influence monetary benefits received, including jury award amounts, in workplace sexual harassment claims. Two methods were utilized to explore the discrepancies in monetary benefits received based on gender differences. The first method used was a survey to test various gender attitudes, attitudes on sexual harassment, and how influential a victim's gender was on determinations of damage award amounts in sexual harassment cases. 6 two-way factorial univariate between-subject analyses of variance (ANOVAs) were used to analyze the survey data. The second method in this …

Characterization Of An Advanced Neuron Model, Christopher Echanique Aug 2012

Characterization Of An Advanced Neuron Model, Christopher Echanique

HIM 1990-2015

This thesis focuses on an adaptive quadratic spiking model of a motoneuron that is both versatile in its ability to represent a range of experimentally observed neuronal firing patterns as well as computationally efficient for large network simulation. The objective of research is to fit membrane voltage data to the model using a parameter estimation approach involving simulated annealing. By manipulating the system dynamics of the model, a realizable model with linear parameterization (LP) can be obtained to simplify the estimation process. With a persistently excited current input applied to the model, simulated annealing is used to efficiently determine the …

Experiences With Social Services Among Homeless Lgbtq Young Adults, Fallon Kadel Aug 2012

Experiences With Social Services Among Homeless Lgbtq Young Adults, Fallon Kadel

HIM 1990-2015

My findings imply that homeless LGBTQ young adults are very limited in where they can go to find LGBTQ-accepting services. Even though all the shelters that were interviewed claimed they did not discriminate against LGBTQ persons, they do not provide and are not affiliated with services or programs that are considered to be LGBTQ- accepting. Based on the research, shelters would rather have clients conform to their pre-existing structure rather than the shelters conforming to the specific needs of the clients.; The goal of this research is to explore what programs and services are being provided at various homeless shelters …
