Characterizing The Onset And Progression Of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Neuropathy In H304r Mutant Mice, Aaron Ledray May 2015

Characterizing The Onset And Progression Of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Neuropathy In H304r Mutant Mice, Aaron Ledray

HIM 1990-2015

Dynein is a motor protein complex that transports various types of intracellular cargos from the cell periphery towards the cell center. Dynein mutations are linked to several neurodegenerative diseases, including Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT). A mouse model of CMT was generated with a knock-in H304R dynein allele. This mutation at position 304 corresponds to the H306R mutation found in humans that can cause CMT. Here, a behavioral test was developed to study the onset and progression of CMT symptoms in these mice. In the tail suspension test, mice were suspended briefly by their tails and the posture of their hind limbs …

The Use Of Yoga For Chronic Pain Management In The Pediatric Population, Annabeth Huff May 2015

The Use Of Yoga For Chronic Pain Management In The Pediatric Population, Annabeth Huff

Chronic pain has an adverse impact on the quality of life in children and adolescents. It can impair a child’s physical, psychological, and social functioning, leading to lower satisfaction with life and poor self-image related to health status. Forty-five percent of children experience chronic pain related to either disease processes or idiopathic causes. Not all children who suffer from chronic pain respond to traditional therapies. The purpose of this literature review was evaluation of current research on the use of yoga as an integrative therapy for chronic pain management in the pediatric population. A database search of CINAHL, MEDLINE, and …

Divorce, Separation, Mental Health And Risky Behaviors Among Fathers: What Are The Connections And How Does It Affect Family Health?, Nicolas Resciniti May 2015

Divorce, Separation, Mental Health And Risky Behaviors Among Fathers: What Are The Connections And How Does It Affect Family Health?, Nicolas Resciniti

HIM 1990-2015

Due to the fact that approximately 50% of US first marriages ending in divorce, there is a growing need to identify and understand the causal mechanisms behind these separations and what effects this event has upon the family unit. This study employed secondary data analyses on the Fragile Families and Child Well-Being Study to identify the differences in the frequency of adverse health behaviors among fathers that are coupled with their partner and those who are divorced/separated. Trends of the fathers from the baseline survey to the five-year follow-up allowed us to observe the following: Differences in adverse health behaviors, …

The Effects Of Complementary Hippotherapy For Children With Austism Spectrum Disorder, Jamie Hicks May 2015

The Effects Of Complementary Hippotherapy For Children With Austism Spectrum Disorder, Jamie Hicks

HIM 1990-2015

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an intricate and complex disorder that continues to grow in its prevalence year after year. The disorder is based on decreased social communication with prevalent stereotypical behaviors and problems in sensory processing. Due to the disorder diagnosis based on a spectrum, each child is different in their severity, and thus requires individualized forms of therapies and treatments. The cause of ASD is unknown, which makes the treatment difficult to standardize. Desperate to find a regimen that benefits their child’s ability to function more successfully, more and more parents are utilizing complementary alternative medicine (CAM). The …

Intersectional Invisibility: A Comparison Among Caucasian, African-American, And Latino Men And Women, De'siree Reeves May 2015

Intersectional Invisibility: A Comparison Among Caucasian, African-American, And Latino Men And Women, De'siree Reeves

HIM 1990-2015

The objective of this thesis was to investigate intersectional (categorical/social) invisibility and the extent to which this phenomenon occurs in a comparison of dominant (i.e., Caucasian), and non-dominant (African-American and Latino) social/ethnic groups. It has been found that intersectional invisibility occurs among African-American women with respect to Caucasian men and women, and African American men (Sesko & Biernat, 2010), but little of this research has been done regarding Latinas. Thus, this experiment aims to not only examine whether Latinas are also subject to intersectional invisibility among dominant (i.e., Caucasian) and non-dominant (i.e., African American and/or Latino) groups, but to determine …

The Effect Of Misogynistic Humor On The Perception Of Women, Natasha Vashist

HIM 1990-2015

Humor is often a controversial genre of entertainment. It is not critically examined due to its intentionally offensive nature. This study examines the impact of sexist humor on the perception of women. Students (n = 1,096) from a 4 year university were divided into two groups and both participated in a questionnaire examining attitudes toward women and media viewing habits. One group was exposed to clips of sexist humor from television shows and the other was not. A series of analyses of variance (ANOVA) conducted on the two groups did not find significant differences between those who had viewed sexist …

Effects Of Ghrko Visceral Fat Transplant On Insulin Signaling, Mohammed Bennis May 2015

Effects Of Ghrko Visceral Fat Transplant On Insulin Signaling, Mohammed Bennis

HIM 1990-2015

Insulin sensitivity has been positively correlated with a healthy and extended lifespan, while insulin resistance, decreased insulin sensitivity, has been linked to aging and is the main indicative of type 2 diabetes. Growth Hormone Receptor/ Binding Protein Knockout mice (GHRKO), although obese, are characterized by high insulin sensitivity and a prolonged lifespan. Due to the absence of growth hormone receptors (GHR), growth hormone (GH) is unable to activate its downstream pathway. Interestingly, the secretory activity of visceral fat in GHRKO mice is altered stimulating insulin sensitivity. In this study, we transplanted normal (N) mice with GHRKO visceral fat pads to …

An Examination Of Relative Age Effects Among Junior Elite Wrestlers, Jayla Kelly May 2015

An Examination Of Relative Age Effects Among Junior Elite Wrestlers, Jayla Kelly

HIM 1990-2015

The purpose of this examination was to evaluate relative age effects among junior elite wrestlers across gender, weight class, and competitive rule sets. Using biographical data, this thesis explores trends representing an oversampling of athletes born earlier in the year, accompanied by potential effects for success in sport and an impact on retention rates. Currently, the use of chronological age is the most common form of classifying sports participants, though this type of classification may have potentially negative long- and short-term implications. Thus, the results may provide an evaluation of weight categorization as a less discriminatory competitive format in junior …

The Mediating Roles Of Coping And Social Support On Adolescent Lesbian Homelessness, Katelynn Craft May 2015

The Mediating Roles Of Coping And Social Support On Adolescent Lesbian Homelessness, Katelynn Craft

HIM 1990-2015

This paper analyzes the stress and coping mechanisms of lesbian homeless adolescents to identify potential buffers against homelessness. The Minority Stress Model and identity theories are used as a framework to interpret the findings in the literature. Based on the findings in the literature, it is possible to conclude that lesbian homeless youth are more susceptible to minority stress due to a lack of adaptive coping resources and social support. Increased levels of minority stress may lead to internalizing and externalizing symptoms that cause runaway and throwaway episodes in homeless youth. This paper proposes a new model to understand the …

The Implications Of Federal And State Laws Regarding The Storage, Use, And Donation Of Cord Blood, Rebecca Miller May 2015

The Implications Of Federal And State Laws Regarding The Storage, Use, And Donation Of Cord Blood, Rebecca Miller

HIM 1990-2015

Cord blood storage, use, and donation is a rising trend. The cells found in the blood of the umbilical cord can be used to treat various life threatening diseases. It has been shown that the use of these cells can produce results that are just as effective as a bone marrow transfusion. The yield of cells from a sample of cord blood is not always enough to be effective for a transfusion in adults. As such children are the primary demographic for cord blood transfusions. For this reason, prospective parents are taking notice of the trend. Currently, federal and state …

A Solomon Like Decision: Factors In Determining Child Custody For Same Sex Couples In Florida After Dissolution Of A Relationship Or Marriage, Sydney Alexander May 2015

A Solomon Like Decision: Factors In Determining Child Custody For Same Sex Couples In Florida After Dissolution Of A Relationship Or Marriage, Sydney Alexander

HIM 1990-2015

Same sex couples around the nation have continually fought for their right to marry and in thirty-six states they have been given that right. What same-sex couples did not think to fight for was the right to divorce. There has been a considerable lack of focus on one such issue often left out of the public discourse over marriage equality: determining parental rights for the purposes of child custody/visitation in the context of a homosexual relationship that has broken down. The choice to have a child in a same-sex couple, with the exception of adoption, usually only allows for one …

Psychosocial Indicators Of Injury Concealment Among Young Male Athletes, Guillermo Alfonso May 2015

Psychosocial Indicators Of Injury Concealment Among Young Male Athletes, Guillermo Alfonso

HIM 1990-2015

The intent of this thesis is to explore the reasons why young athletes may conceal their sports injuries. In recent years, there has been much discussion about the long-term health implications that former athletes are dealing with as they live life after sports. Sports injuries including concussions, knee damage, and spinal injuries are all issues that could affect an athlete’s quality of life far beyond their playing days. It is well known around the athletic and medical communities that many athletes withhold information about their injury symptoms just to get back on to the field. Most worrisome about this fact, …

The purpose of this study was to identify the current perspective of grades three through twelve in-service teachers regarding mathematics anxiety, its causes, and its relation to gender stereotyping. A short online survey was conducted to gain insight into their classrooms and perspectives of the subject. The results showed that mathematics anxiety did exist in the classroom, and in-service teachers did report seeing a gender gap between the anxiety experienced by females and males. I believe that from these findings it is important to conduct further research on in-service teachers to see in depth what they think. This is important …

Same-Sex Sexual Assault In The Military, Lauren Croft May 2015

Same-Sex Sexual Assault In The Military, Lauren Croft

HIM 1990-2015

Sexual assault in the military is a large concern for the Department of Defense. They recognize it as an important and complex problem that needs to be addressed. In recent years, efforts have been initiated in order to improve the handling of sexual assault cases and data retention. An entirely new program has been created in order to address these cases. Focusing on the occurrence of same-sex assaults heightens the sensitivity of matters. This is due to the precarious and only very recent acceptance of homosexuals in the military. In the past, service members, homosexual or otherwise, may have been …

Objective: Currently, there does not exist a cohesive and predictive set of criteria that can be used to identify patients that are at risk of being non-adherent to antibiotic regimens. In this study, we sought to answer the question of whether patients’ knowledge of the scientific background of antibiotic resistance is related to their likelihood to adhere to antibiotic regimens. Additionally, we explored other facets of the profiles of adherent and non-adherent subjects. Methods: All responses were collected via questionnaire. Subjects were split into two groups (adherent and non-adherent) based upon four patient-behavior questions. These two groups of subjects were …

Angular Dependence Of The Emission From The Intrinsic Josephson Junction In Pie-Shaped Wedge Triangular Bscco Mesas, Manuel Morales May 2015

Angular Dependence Of The Emission From The Intrinsic Josephson Junction In Pie-Shaped Wedge Triangular Bscco Mesas, Manuel Morales

HIM 1990-2015

The purpose of this thesis is to determine the radiation patterns from an acute isosceles triangular superconducting mesa modeled by a pie-shaped geometry. The terahertz band lies between the microwave and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The terahertz radiation from atomic-scale layered superconducting mesas is caused by the tunneling of electron pairs in the ac-Josephson effect. To determine the terahertz power radiated per unit solid angle of an acute isosceles triangular superconducting mesa, a model was employed in which the shape of the mesa is approximated as a pie-shaped wedge. This model is shown to have an accuracy of …

Effects Of Caffeinated Energy Drink And Alcohol Usage On Perceived Stress And Burnout In Undergraduate Students, Arjun Patel May 2015

Effects Of Caffeinated Energy Drink And Alcohol Usage On Perceived Stress And Burnout In Undergraduate Students, Arjun Patel

HIM 1990-2015

Caffeinated energy beverages (CEDs) are a growing supplement being consumed by a large number of young adults aged 18 to 24 years of age. As these CEDs contain nutritional supplements, they are not classified the same way other beverages such as sodas are and they can thus bypass regulation by the Food and Drug Administration. Without regulation by this governing body, it is important to understand how these supplements may be affecting their target population. In this study, students from a large university were recruited in order to determine patterns of CED usage as well as how CED usage may …

What Is Implicit About Implicit Category Learning?, Matthew Murray May 2015

What Is Implicit About Implicit Category Learning?, Matthew Murray

HIM 1990-2015

The conscious or unconscious acquirement of knowledge in implicit category learning was examined in accordance with predictions made by the COVIS theory of categorization (Ashby & Maddox, 2011). COVIS assumes separate category learning systems. The explicit system relies on easily verbalized rules while the implicit system requires integration of more than one stimulus dimension. Participants in this experiment categorized lines varying in length and orientation as belonging to one of two categories; in the rule-based (RB) condition only length was relevant, while participants in the information integration (II) condition needed to integrate both dimensions. Corrective feedback was provided during training. …

Stable Isotope Evidence For The Geographic Origins And Military Movement Of Napoleonic Soldiers During The March From Moscow In 1812, Serenela Pelier May 2015

Stable Isotope Evidence For The Geographic Origins And Military Movement Of Napoleonic Soldiers During The March From Moscow In 1812, Serenela Pelier

HIM 1990-2015

In 2001, 3269 unidentified individuals were found in a mass grave on the Northern part of Vilnius, Lithuania. Artifactual context indicates that these individuals were likely soldiers that were a part of Napoleon’s Grand Army. Stable oxygen isotope analysis was performed on bone apatite from 9 femoral bone samples to determine whether or not these individuals were Lithuanian locals and to test ratio variation. If individuals were foreigners, then geographical origins were approximated utilizing percentages of C4 plants from Holder (2013) and δ18O values that were extracted from bone apatite. The carbonate oxygen isotope compositions (δ18Ocarbonate) of bone apatite from …

Results indicate a significant positive relationship between resilience and optimism. The results also indicate positive significant relationships between resilience and extraversion, as well as resilience and conscientiousness. A …

Understanding And Modeling Pathways To Thrombosis, John Seligson May 2015

Understanding And Modeling Pathways To Thrombosis, John Seligson

HIM 1990-2015

This research will investigate techniques to create a sensor that is responsive to methane at 23°C. The approach will use the integration of a very thin film, which changes its resistive properties when methane gas is applied, deposited atop the surface of a piezoelectric substrate. An aluminum thin film interdigital transducer will launch a surface acoustic wave (SAW) that travels under the sensor’s gas-sensitive resistive thin film. The SAW/resistive film interaction changes the SAW amplitude, phase and delay. For this work, three films, tin dioxide (SnO2), zinc oxide (ZnO) and palladium (Pd) [1, 2] will be studied. Gas detection will …

Frequency-Domain Faraday Rotation Spectroscopy (Fd-Frs) For Functionalized Particle And Biomolecule Characterization, Richard Murdock

HIM 1990-2015

In this study, the magnetically-induced vibrations of functionalized magnetic particle suspensions were probed for the development of a novel optical spectroscopy technique. Through this work (1) the frequency-dependence of the faraday rotation in ferrofluids and (2) the extension of this system to elucidating particle size and conformation as an alternative immunossay to costly and labor/time intensive Western Blotting and ELISA has been shown. With its sensitivity and specificity, this method has proven to be a promising multi-functional tool in biosensing, diagnostic, and therapeutic nanomedicine efforts. Due to its ubiquitous nature in all optically-transparent materials, the farady rotation, or circular birefringence, …

Sparsification Of Social Networks Using Random Walks, Bryan Wilder May 2015

Sparsification Of Social Networks Using Random Walks, Bryan Wilder

HIM 1990-2015

Analysis of large network datasets has become increasingly important. Algorithms have been designed to find many kinds of structure, with numerous applications across the social and biological sciences. However, a tradeoff is always present between accuracy and scalability; otherwise promising techniques can be computationally infeasible when applied to networks with huge numbers of nodes and edges. One way of extending the reach of network analysis is to sparsify the graph by retaining only a subset of its edges. The reduced network could prove much more tractable. For this thesis, I propose a new sparsification algorithm that preserves the properties of …
