Methods and systems for doping cerium oxide and other therapeutically valuable nanoparticles with rare earth ions either singly or in combinations so that infrared light is absorbed and visible light is emitted through the process of up conversion. A novel type of therapeutic nanoparticle with rare earth doping to provide for up conversion emission is invented that makes possible identification, tracking and evaluating the functionality of the nanoparticles and further elucidation of ROS scavenging mechanism. The present invention may be applied to a wide variety of therapeutic agents under investigation.

Methods, systems and compositions are disclosed wherein normal, nontransformed, healthy biological cells are protected from oxidative stress, radiation therapy and chemotherapy while diseased, transformed cells, such as, cancer cells, are provided no protection by the biocompatible, polymer coated nanoceria composition of the present invention. The polymer-coated nanoceria preparation herein exhibits no toxicity to normal cells and exhibits pH-dependent antioxidant properties at neutral or physiological pH values, between approximately 6.5 to approximately 1 1.0 and is inactive as an antioxidant at acidic pH values between approximately 2.0 to approximately 6.4. Medulla: A 2d Sidescrolling Platformer Game That Teaches Basic Brain Structure And Function, Joey R. Fanfarelli, Stephanie Vie

This article explores the design and instructional effectiveness of Medulla, an educational game meant to teach brain structure and function to undergraduate psychology students. Developed in the retro-style platformer genre, Medulla uses two-dimensional gameplay with pixel-based graphics to engage students in learning content related to the brain, information which is often pre-requisite to more rigorous psychological study. A pretest posttest design was used in an experiment assessing Medulla’s ability to teach psychology content. Results indicated content knowledge was significantly higher on the posttest than the pretest, with a large effect size. Medulla appears to be an effective learning tool. These …

Methods and systems for passive wireless surface acoustic wave devices for orthgonal frequency coded devices to implement ON-OFF sensors reusing orthogonal frequency code and distinguishing between ON and OFF states using additional PN sequence and on/off switches producing multi-level coding as well as external stimuli for switching and identification of a closure system. An embodiment adds a level of diversity by adding a dibit to each surface acoustic wave devices, thus providing four different possible coding states. The PN on-off coding can be with the dibit for coding in a multi-tag system.

The risk for upper extremity lymphedema post-mastectomy in women surgically treated for breast cancer is a concern since it is often painful, aesthetically displeasing, and can increase the risk of infection. However, there is a paucity of data examining if diagnostic procedures performed in the ipsilateral arm post-mastectomy increases the risk of lymphedema. Aggressive driving is not clearly and consistently defined in the literature, neither in terms of the specific behaviors chosen for inclusion nor the degree to which the emotional state of the driver is taken into account. Principally, the aim of this current research is to determine the extent to which aggressive driving and road rage overlap. This thesis asks the question as to whether polyamory functions as a community glue or solvent for the Central Florida Burner Community. It explores the definition of polyamory and how it relates to the Burner counter-culture. This thesis explores what polyamory's effects are on the individual and community levels for those who participate in it. The findings concluded that overall the participants reported a perceived positive impact on both the individual level and on community cohesion in this case. The participants also revealed that the environment Burning Man provides is generally open and welcoming of polyamory.

A majority of adolescents and young adults report inconsistent use of safe sexual behaviors and contraception methods due to a variety of influencing factors. These practices can lead to limited future reproductive choices and can spread communicable disease in the population. The purpose of this study was to determine if a woman's decision to use a specific type of contraceptive method is influenced by her partner's attitude toward preventive sexual health practices. This paper explores the effect of color on working memory performance. Interest in Baker-Miller pink surged with the finding by Schauss (1979) that it reduced aggression in aggravated detainees. However, research behind Baker-Miller pink has been influenced by biases and methodological errors. Its effects are likely overstated. Red and blue have also been studied for their effects on creativity, approach-avoidance conflict, detail-orientation, and most importantly, stress. Further research has been conducted on the effects of relaxation on cognition, with the conclusion that increased relaxation leads to improvements in working memory performance. The integration of academics and occupational education is a concept supported by the business community, vocational educators and state and federal policy makers. The 1990 Carl Perkins Amendments required federal moneys to be spent on progmms that integrate academic and vocational education course sequencing, so that students achieve both academic and occupational competencies (Section 235). This study analyzed the process and product of courses developed within a secondary Health Professions Center magnet program in Indiana against the elements of success as outlined by Statz and Gmbb (1991) and Pritz (1989).

Some of the challenges clinical laboratories faces today are the design and implementation of competency assessment programs. Section 493.1451 (b) (8) of the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 (CLIA, 1988) regulations states that technical supervisors are responsible for ensuring that staff maintain competency to perform test procedures and report results promptly, accurately, and proficiently. This study investigated changes in selected measures of educational aspiration, preparation, and achievement of African and Caucasian American high school students for the years 1975, 1985, and 1995. A 5% sample of all ACT test takers for each of the years comprised the initial sample from which those high school students indicating a commitment for a health careers collegiate major were selected. Crosstabulation was used to present the data. In view of the large sample size statistical tests of inference were not considered necessary. Many of the nation’s nursing schools have yet to develop AIDS policies. Without such policy implementation, nursing educators face many problems. A recent study of nursing programs in Nebraska revealed that none of the schools’ policies met all of the twenty-one criteria set forth by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the American College Health Association (ACHA). Multiskilled Health Practitioners: Results Of A Graduate Assessment, Sherry Makely M.S., Richard Bamberg Ph.D., Mark H. Mattes M.S.

To ascertain the assimilation of graduates into multiskilled practice, the Add-A-Comp Program, Methodist Hospital of Indiana, conducted an assessment of graduates over a 30-month period. Input was received both from the program’s graduates and supervisors of the graduates. Of the 40 responding graduates, 24 (60%) had functioned in a multiskilled capacity. The majority of graduates reported increased job satisfaction, security, challenge, opportunities, and perceived value to their employer resulting from their multiskilled employment, with 58% receiving additional compensation for multiskilled functioning. For the first time, in the state of Indiana, a model and precedent for meeting minimum high school science graduation requirements with a health occupations program has been accomplished. Because of the national and state thrust on improving education by increasing requirements for graduation and for sciences in particular, this model was developed to facilitate student completion of science courses prior to in-depth health occupations coursework. A method of testing bacterial cells for antimicrobial susceptibility includes preparing a suspension of the bacterial cells in a non-nutrient medium, mixing with the suspension an antimicrobial, a carbohydrate usable by the bacterial cells, metallic nanoparticles, and a lectin, and incubating the mixture while monitoring a parameter of the nanoparticles responsive to use of the carbohydrate by the bacterial cells. Wide band gap semiconductors such as MgxZn1-xO represent an excellent choice for making optical photodetectors and emitters operating in the UV spectral region. High crystal and optical quality MgxZn1-xO thin films were grown epitaxially on c-plane sapphire substrates by plasma-assisted Molecular Beam Epitaxy. ZnO thin films with high crystalline quality, low defect and dislocation densities, and sub-nanometer surface roughness were achieved by applying a low temperature nucleation layer. Resultant epitaxial ZnO films demonstrated excellent structural and morphological properties. By tuning Mg/Zn flux ratio, steep optical absorption edge of the MgxZn1-xO with spectral cutoff wavelength ranging from 278nm to 377nm was …

This study aims to assess whether biological sex impacts motivation and experience at a music festival in Curacao and is premised on different consumption behavior induced by biological sex. Differences in motivations and behavioral intentions based on biological sex were observed. The study further revealed that biological sex plays an important role in framing the experience and behavior intentions of the female segment. This finding is relevant as females are becoming an important mainstream at music festivals and travel and leisure consumers.
