Transdisciplinarity Through A Functional Approach In The Content Areas: Commonalities For School Teachers, Karen L. Terrell, Luciana C. De Oliveira, Jia Gui
Journal of English Learner Education
In 2020, the WIDA Consortium released a revised English language development standards framework that integrates a functional approach to language development, grounded in systemic functional linguistics, across core subjects: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Central to this framework are four Key Language Uses—Narrate, Inform, Explain, and Argue. While this holistic approach is promising, it poses challenges for elementary and middle-grade teachers and ESOL specialists, who often teach multiple subjects. To ensure all teachers can implement this approach effectively, the integration of functional language must be simplified for generalist instructors. This article explores how identifying linguistic commonalities across …

The Relationship Between Evening Screen Time Use And Objectively Measured Sleep Outcomes In Us College Students, Donya Sedaghat
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
High amounts of nightly screen time have been thought to negatively affect sleep outcomes (sleep duration, quality, and latency). There is a lack of evidence exploring if this pattern exists in U.S. college students. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between evening screen time use and objectively measured sleep outcomes in U.S. college students. College students (N = 29) junior or senior standing in a Health Sciences major were recruited to participate in this cross-sectional study. Participants wore accelerometers on their non-dominant wrist for 24hr/day for 7 days to capture sleep (duration, efficiency, awakenings, timing). Participants …
Investigating Soil Co2 Flux Among Varying Soil Types During Inundation Conditions, Jennifer Volk, Arya Patel
Investigating Soil Co2 Flux Among Varying Soil Types During Inundation Conditions, Jennifer Volk, Arya Patel
The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal
Land use change has contributed to the increase of carbon dioxide (CO2) release, exacerbating global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. CO2 is also naturally produced in the soil via microbial respiration which breaks down soil organic matter (SOM). Several studies have investigated factors affecting CO2 flux from soils, but few have compared CO2 flux from a range of soil types under controlled conditions with varying water levels. This study subjected intact soil cores from six different soil types to varied periods of inundation and dry events using the same water and timing. During each event, CO …

The research was guided by two key questions: (1) How are mental health trainings under Project AWARE and state laws implemented in two southeastern states? and (2) How do high school English language arts (ELA) teachers in two southeastern states incorporate mental health trainings within their andragogical practices …
Morphology, Evolution And Host-Driven Convergence In Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonoidea), Davide Dal Pos
Morphology, Evolution And Host-Driven Convergence In Ichneumonidae (Hymenoptera, Ichneumonoidea), Davide Dal Pos
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Understanding the functional and evolutionary significance of morphology is fundamental to interpreting the tree of life. In recent years, emerging tools have enabled broad-scale analysis of discrete morphological data and facilitated the study of entire phenomes, helping to re-establish morphology as a central component of evolutionary research. These advances allow us not only to examine individual traits in detail but also to compare them across taxa and explore their evolutionary trajectories. This approach is particularly critical when studying hyperdiverse groups that exhibit both high levels of morphological convergence and complex life cycles intricately tied to host use. A prime example …
Marine Ecosystem Services Disruption And Social Violence, Rafael Hurtado-Valdivieso
Marine Ecosystem Services Disruption And Social Violence, Rafael Hurtado-Valdivieso
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Over the past century, human activities have profoundly altered ocean and coastal ecosystems, significantly impacting communities whose livelihoods depend on these environments. This dissertation explores how disruptions in marine ecosystem services contribute to the emergence of social violence in coastal communities, with a specific focus on the Colombian Caribbean. While prior research suggests a potential link between environmental degradation and conflict, empirical evidence remains limited and inconclusive. This study addresses that gap through a multi-method, interdisciplinary approach that integrates environmental science, political science, and computational modeling to examine the mechanisms linking ecosystem disruption to social violence.
The research follows a …
Bridging Data Gaps And Forecasting Challenges In Water Quality Monitoring Using Deep Learning, Rohan Gudla
Bridging Data Gaps And Forecasting Challenges In Water Quality Monitoring Using Deep Learning, Rohan Gudla
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Reliable water quality monitoring is critical for protecting public health and enabling sustainable environmental management. However, high rates of missing data often exceed 40% due to sensor failures and operational disruptions severely undermine the utility of environmental monitoring systems. To address this challenge, this thesis presents a three-stage deep learning framework designed to enhance the accuracy and resilience of water quality forecasting. First, a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory model with Attention and Autoencoder Modules (BiLSTM-AAM) is introduced to impute long, irregular gaps in multivariate time series. Applied to real-world data from the St. Lucie River Basin, the model achieved a …
Computational Approaches For Rna Structural Motif Analysis: Similarities, Variations, And Spatial Relationships, Md Mahfuzur Rahaman
Computational Approaches For Rna Structural Motif Analysis: Similarities, Variations, And Spatial Relationships, Md Mahfuzur Rahaman
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
The three-dimensional structures of RNA play a critical role in understanding their functions. One way to study the RNA 3D structure is by analyzing recurrent segments within the loop regions of RNAs, known as RNA structural motifs. These motifs can be grouped into families based on their structural features. However, the inherent structural diversity presents challenges in characterizing the similarities, variations, and spatial relationships within RNA motif families. This dissertation presents three computational methods that together provide a comprehensive framework for RNA structural motif analysis. First, RNAMotifComp establishes and visualizes relational networks among structural motif families. By analyzing instances of …

Over the years, significant advancements have been made in aircraft technology and in understanding the detrimental effects of fatigue on flight performance. However, integrating these advancements into crew rest regulations, particularly for the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) operating high-performance jets, requires further review. This study employs a systematic review with thematic analysis to assess whether ROKAF’s current rest regulations are sufficient. Relevant studies were identified from English-language databases (e.g., FAA, ICAO, Google Scholar) and Korean-language databases (e.g., RISS, KCI). Titles and abstracts were initially reviewed, followed by full-text assessments based on inclusion and exclusion criteria focusing on military …
Tail-Imbalance Diffusion Equalizer For Class-Balanced Generation, Chinmay Dhanraj Nehate
Tail-Imbalance Diffusion Equalizer For Class-Balanced Generation, Chinmay Dhanraj Nehate
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Real-world image corpora are often imbalanced. On long-tailed datasets, the head class can outnumber the tail by a large margin, and a vanilla diffusion probabilistic model (DPM) consequently loses fidelity and diversity on rare categories, undermining controllable generation. To address this gap, we present Tail Imbalance Diffusion Equalizer (TIDE), a training framework that restores class balance without discarding data or adding extra training stages. Our contribution is threefold: (i) score field rebalancing, where we embed class-prior knowledge into a mixing matrix that routes gradients toward minority classes, with this class-prior knowledge consisting of the empirical label frequencies in the training …
Sex Estimation Using Linear And Geometric Morphometric Analyses Of The Adult Human Talus, Melissa N. Marks
Sex Estimation Using Linear And Geometric Morphometric Analyses Of The Adult Human Talus, Melissa N. Marks
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Estimating biological sex is an essential first step when analyzing human remains in both forensic and archaeological contexts. While the pelvis and skull are traditionally used for this purpose, they are not always present or sufficiently preserved to permit analysis. The talus is sexually dimorphic and can yield highly accurate sex estimates, making it a promising alternative skeletal element for sex estimation. As there is currently no accepted protocol for sex estimation using the talus, the present study attempts to replicate and validate existing methods using linear and three-dimensional landmark data, while comparing data from ancient Maya (n=16), ancient Egyptian …
Differential Interferon Synthesis And Signaling Between Parainfluenza Virus Acute And Persistently Infected Cells, Vonisha Kaigler
Differential Interferon Synthesis And Signaling Between Parainfluenza Virus Acute And Persistently Infected Cells, Vonisha Kaigler
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
RNA virus infections can transition from an initial acute infection to a prolonged or persistent infection, in which infected cells survive and continue to produce progeny virus. This presents a major clinical problem as persistently infected (PI) cells extend viral shedding, maintain inflammation, and provide potential sources for new viral variants. The RNA virus, Parainfluenza virus 5 (PIV5), with mutations in the P/V gene region (P/V mutant) is a strong inducer of antiviral responses. Interestingly, over time, there is an emergence of cells that survive as P/V mutant PI cells. Given that changes in innate immune signaling pathways can occur …

A Forgotten Kairos: Rhetorical Memory In 16th Century Europe, Phillip Martin
A Forgotten Kairos: Rhetorical Memory In 16th Century Europe, Phillip Martin
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
In 16th century Europe the nearly 2000-year-old discipline of rhetoric, still a pillar of education, underwent significant change. One of the more curious changes occurred in rhetoric’s subdivision known as memory, memoria, that is, memory’s “artificial” cultivation. During the 16th century rhetorical memory was paradoxically both maximized and marginalized as a discipline. And by the early 17th century memoria was all but extinct as a branch of rhetoric. The causal mechanisms of this transformation remain underexamined, particularly by rhetoric and composition scholars, and most explanations remain unclear and uncompelling. Accordingly, this thesis attempts a new approach …

A Community-Based Wellness Program To Increase Exercise Adherence For Menopausal And Postmenopausal Women: A Mixed-Methods Pilot Study, Kristin M. Badillo
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Evidence exists that long-term commitment to an exercise routine is beneficial. Contrarily, there is a notable lack in exercise adherence among menopausal and postmenopausal women. Though research has thoroughly examined the reasons why menopausal and postmenopausal women may not be committed to an exercise routine, it remains unclear what motivates those who are adherent. This pilot study employed a mixed-methods design through administering surveys and conducting in-person focus group interviews. Additionally, an 8-week buddy system was implemented to assess the role of social support and its effect on exercise adherence. For quantitative data collection, a total of 7 participants enrolled …
Predicting Past And Future Anthropogenic Global Harvest And Land Use, Michelle Bardales Cruz
Predicting Past And Future Anthropogenic Global Harvest And Land Use, Michelle Bardales Cruz
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Anthropogenic appropriation of natural lands has long sustained human populations and activities. Human use of the environment has resulted in the degradation of green spaces and depletion of natural, particularly plant-based, resources. Human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP) is a globally available, spatially explicit measure of this human-driven extraction and diversion of plant biomass through harvesting (HANPPharv) and land use change (HANPPluc). Models for HANPP have been limited temporally (e.g., a year) or in terms of complexity (e.g., one predictor). In this study, I predict HANPPharv and HANPPluc from 1960 to 2010 at …

Instructional And Motivational Factors Predicting Deep Learning Approaches In Pre-Clinical Medical Students, Kenneth L. Dearman
Instructional And Motivational Factors Predicting Deep Learning Approaches In Pre-Clinical Medical Students, Kenneth L. Dearman
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Pre-clinical medical students predominantly employ surface learning approaches, focusing on memorization and exam preparation rather than developing a deep understanding of medical knowledge. This study employed a correlational design comparing two courses with different instructional approaches using expectancy-value theory to examine how instructional methods and motivational factors predict deep learning approaches among 148 pre-clinical medical students at a College of Medicine in the Southeastern United States. Initial results showed that the three separate constructs in task motivation (expectancy beliefs, values, and cost) did not mediate the relationship between active instructional methods and deep learning strategies. Instead, active learning was a …
Investigating The Role Of Selenium-Dependent Stickland Reactions In Clostridioides Difficile Bioenergetics, Dominika Dzurny
Investigating The Role Of Selenium-Dependent Stickland Reactions In Clostridioides Difficile Bioenergetics, Dominika Dzurny
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Clostridioides difficile is an anaerobic, spore-forming bacterium and one of the leading causes of antibiotic- associated diarrhea. Colonization depends on the metabolism of certain nutrients in the host gut, namely amino acids and carbohydrates. C. difficile ferments amino acids as an integral part of its metabolism via Stickland reactions, utilizing the selenoproteins D-proline reductase (Prd) and glycine reductase (Grd) to generate energy. Specificity of selenocysteine incorporation reflects the intracellular levels of selenophosphate, the activated selenium donor synthesized by selenophosphate synthetase (SelD). SelD is coincidentally a selenoprotein itself, containing a UGA codon at position 17 (Sec-17). The functional and physiological importance …
Interactions Of Anti-Viral Ceria Nanoparticles With An Enveloped Rna Virus, Muhammad Hassan Mehmood Kalyar
Interactions Of Anti-Viral Ceria Nanoparticles With An Enveloped Rna Virus, Muhammad Hassan Mehmood Kalyar
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
There is growing interest in developing durable and broad-spectrum antiviral nanomaterials for surface disinfection. Silver-modified ceria nanoparticles (AgCNPs) are regenerative materials capable of inactivating a wide range of viruses through generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). We hypothesized that for enveloped RNA viruses, the lipid bilayer and viral spike glycoproteins are determinants of sensitivity to inactivation of infectivity by AgCNPs. This hypothesis was tested using Vesicular Stomatitis Virus (VSV), a model enveloped negative-sense single strand RNA virus containing a single spike glycoprotein G. Five rounds of serial passage of VSV in the presence of suboptimal AgCNP concentrations led to the …
