The Composing Process And Speech Communication An Examination Of The Strategies Of Six Successful Student Speakers, Susan M. Andersen Jan 1988

The Composing Process And Speech Communication An Examination Of The Strategies Of Six Successful Student Speakers, Susan M. Andersen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Speech is a process, yet studies in human communication generally examine speech as a product. Rather than studying the decisions employed in the construction and reception of messages, most research in speech focuses upon evaluating communication products. This study represents an effort to build communication theory within a different paradigmatic perspective, employing ethnographic interview method for the purpose of generating theory.

The purpose of this study was to examine the composing processes of six successful student speakers as they prepared formal public speeches. The specific strategies and methods employed were found to vary among these students and to deviate significantly …

Alcoholism Subspecies And Their Relationship To Cigarette And Caffeine Consumption, John F. Crawley

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The relationships between types of alcoholism and cigarette and caffeine consumption were studies using the classification system of Reactive and Essential Alcoholism. The subjects were 155 Alcoholics Anonymous members. Information was collected on a number of population demographics including gender, religious preference, length of sobriety, educational level, and ethnic group membership. A correlational design was used and the data collection technique was a self-administered questionnaire. Hypotheses under study were: (1) Essential Alcoholics are more likely to be high frequency cigarette smokers than Reactive Alcoholics; (2) Essential Alcoholics are more likely to be high frequency caffeine consumers than Reactive Alcoholics. A Case Study In Rumor Transmission Based On The Leo Frank Case, George Mark Jackson

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the process of rumor transmission in an historical context. The basis was a case study of the Leo Frank incident. The editorials of Populist editor Tom Watson, written during Frank's appeal and commutation, were tested for emotional intensity. Significant findings tended to support the anxiety component of the Rosnow/Fine model for rumor transmission. The study was limited as there was no control condition without anxiety.

The Etiology Of Bulimia Nervosa From A Psychodynamic Socio-Cultural Perspective, Michael John Hryckowian Jan 1988

The Etiology Of Bulimia Nervosa From A Psychodynamic Socio-Cultural Perspective, Michael John Hryckowian

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The present research examined the etiology of bulimia nervosa from a psychodynamic perspective. The Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) and Bern Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) were used to compare bulimics and controls on a number of personality dimensions including drive for thinness, body shape dissatisfaction, interoceptive awareness (one's lack of confidence in identifying emotions or visceral sensations) and sex role identification. Using the appropriate scales on the EDI, it was hypothesized that bulimics would demonstrate a higher drive for thinness and more body dissatisfaction than controls and that they would possess poorer interoceptive awareness than controls. In agreement with the dynamic …

A Multivariate Study On The Emotions And Self-Esteem Of Pregnant Women, Patricia K. Teal Jan 1988

A Multivariate Study On The Emotions And Self-Esteem Of Pregnant Women, Patricia K. Teal

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This multivariate study investigated the effects of selected psychosocial and demographic variables on the self-esteem and emotional states of pregnant women. Previous studies done pertaining to this subject have tended to be restricted to specific social classes, racial groups, age groups or marital status. The present study expanded previous research by looking at a broader population. Pregnant women in their third trimester (~ = 201) were asked to complete a demographic questionnaire, a Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and a Multiple Affect Adjective Check List. Pearson coefficients indicated that self-esteem scores were positively correlated with positive affect and negatively correlated with anxiety, …

Self-Esteem Level, Workload Factors And Selected Demographic Variables In Nurse Faculty, E. Marie Visscher

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to examine the relationship among self-esteem levels, workload factors, and selected demographic variables of nurse educators. Different types of public nurse education programs in Florida were used. Data were obtained through a mailed questionnaire incorporating the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, the Hudson Index of Self-Esteem, workload and demographic items. Questionnaires were returned by 384 respondents of the 698 mailed for a 55% return rate.

High self-esteem scores for faculty from all types of nursing programs were found with both the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale(~= 35) and Hudson Index of Self-Esteem(~= 19). Statistically significant differences were determined between self-esteem …

A School Of Communication With A Liberal Arts Tradition, Jon T. Powell Oct 1987

A School Of Communication With A Liberal Arts Tradition, Jon T. Powell

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article traces the evolution of the Department of Speech Communication at Northern Illinois University into Communication Studies and its proposed development into a School of Communication. It examines how the department maintained a liberal arts tradition while adapting to new technologies, curricular demands, and disciplinary specialization. The discussion reviews changes in degree emphases, including the expansion of radio-television-film, the addition of organizational and corporate communication, and the continued role of rhetorical studies as a curricular foundation. Faculty organization by research interest, cross-teaching assignments, and collaborative governance are highlighted as strategies for preserving breadth and balance. The proposed merger with …

Involving Faculty In Department And Professional Service, G. Jack Gravlee Oct 1987

Involving Faculty In Department And Professional Service, G. Jack Gravlee

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the role of faculty service in higher education and the responsibilities of department chairs in balancing participation with protection from excessive demands. Service is defined broadly, encompassing internal duties such as committees and advising, as well as external contributions to the community and professional organizations. The discussion highlights ambiguities in how service is valued compared to teaching and research, often leaving faculty uncertain about its impact on evaluation. Practical recommendations are offered for administrators: clarifying departmental obligations, rotating assignments, introducing new faculty gradually, reserving key tasks for senior members, and rewarding time-intensive service. Equally emphasized is the …

The Future Of Interpersonal Communication, W. Barnett Pearce, Karen A. Foss Aug 1987

The Future Of Interpersonal Communication, W. Barnett Pearce, Karen A. Foss

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the development and future of interpersonal communication as a central area within the communication discipline. It traces the historical debate between rhetorical and speech traditions, the emergence of mass communication research, and the eventual rise of interpersonal communication as a distinct focus. Three major approaches—objective scientific, humanistic celebration, and humane scientific—are outlined, each offering different perspectives on communication processes. The discussion highlights the impact of broader social and political contexts, meta-theoretical debates within the field, and the growing influence of new-paradigm social theory. By situating communication within long-standing Western traditions of actuality, transcendence, and possibility, the article …

Defining The Organization, Philip K. Tompkins Aug 1987

Defining The Organization, Philip K. Tompkins

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article reflects on the role of department chairs in universities, drawing on experience in governance and administration to offer both theoretical and practical insights. It introduces the tension between structure and communitas, arguing that academic organizations often emphasize hierarchy at the expense of collegial bonds. Practical strategies include “penetration,” or building connections two levels up and down in the hierarchy, and developing persistence in advocating for departmental needs despite apprehension. The discussion addresses expectations from deans, the challenge of maintaining order without stifling conflict, and the ambiguity of rational versus irrational decision-making in complex systems. Additional observations concern how …

Negotiating And Bargaining In Academic Settings, Larry D. Browning, James A. Gilchrist Aug 1987

Negotiating And Bargaining In Academic Settings, Larry D. Browning, James A. Gilchrist

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines political decision making in academic organizations, contrasting the rational-economic model with the realities of negotiation and bargaining in complex environments. It argues that limited information, conflicting goals, and interdependent subunits make purely rational decision making impractical, leading instead to “satisficing” outcomes shaped by coalitions and informal networks. The discussion highlights how leaders use influence, resource control, and interpersonal exchanges to stabilize authority and secure commitments. A set of practical negotiation rules is outlined, emphasizing strategies such as coalition building, impression management, strategic disclosure, patience, and maintaining options. These practices help leaders navigate ambiguity, manage power dynamics, and …

Bringing Communication Scholars Together: Wise Or Foolish?, Erwin P. Bettinghouse Aug 1987

Bringing Communication Scholars Together: Wise Or Foolish?, Erwin P. Bettinghouse

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the question of whether communication-related disciplines should be merged into free-standing schools or colleges. It argues that the wisdom of such mergers depends on institutional type, the history and strength of the units involved, and the degree of intellectual similarity among them. Large universities with dominant arts and sciences colleges may disadvantage communication units if they separate, while smaller or more balanced institutions may provide opportunities for equal resource distribution. Past histories of strong or weak departments also influence outcomes, as disparities in size or reputation can create dominance or instability. The discussion stresses that intellectual kinship …
