An Exploratory Examination Of The Effect Of Remarriage On Child-Support And Personal Contacts, Walter D. Tropf
Faculty Bibliography 1980s
This paper examines the re-ordering of role reiationships occurring after remarriage, and their effect on child support and personal contacts. Comparisons are made for three marital statuses-separation, divorce and the remarriage of either exspouse. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 101 divorced men. The findings suggest that voluntary support increases after the remarriage of the father but decreases with the remarriage of the ex-wife. Visiting frequency decreases, while visiting length increases with the remarriage of either exspouse. Phone calls remain relatively constant. An examination of ten intervening variables suggests that geographic distance, religion. soclal class, the attitude of …

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Centered on communication program development in Australia, this article describes an international visiting fellowship at Kuring-gai College of Advanced Education in Sydney. It situates the program within the growth of applied communication studies in Australian higher education, especially the advanced education sector’s emphasis on vocationally oriented curricula. The article explains how the fellowship brought United States communication scholars to assist with curriculum development, staff development, teaching, research, learning materials, library resources, and professional seminars. It also discusses recruitment, selection, institutional fit, and the eventual suspension of the program because of financial constraints. The article contributes to communication administration by presenting …

The Suny, Buffalo, Story, Charles R. Petrie
The Suny, Buffalo, Story, Charles R. Petrie
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Focused on the Department of Communication at SUNY Buffalo, this case study describes a prolonged administrative review shaped by budget reductions, declining student pools, public internal conflict, and loss of faculty lines. The department responded by arguing for communication’s student demand, disciplinary centrality, program quality, and relevance to the university mission, while also experimenting with resource plans, tighter requirements, larger course strategies, and use of part time professionals. When administrators proposed options ranging from phase out to program suspension or reorganization, the department issued an open letter addressing budgetary need, quality, centrality, demand, and internal strife. The case documents an …

Toward A Definition Of The Field: Local Constraints And National Coherence, Dwight Freshley
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Using the University of Georgia as an institutional case, this article examines how local departmental structures complicate national efforts to define speech communication as a coherent academic field. It compares broad disciplinary definitions from the Speech Communication Association with the narrower curricular and administrative realities of one department, where communication related areas are dispersed across multiple colleges and schools. The article discusses curriculum revisions, public and interpersonal communication as a departmental core, relations with theatre, journalism, management, and speech pathology, and administrative issues involving promotion review, system committees, service courses, and disciplinary visibility. It contributes to communication administration by showing …
Approaching Speech Communication From A Social Scientific Perspective, Alvin Goldberg
Approaching Speech Communication From A Social Scientific Perspective, Alvin Goldberg
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
Framing speech communication through a social scientific lens, this article argues that the field can be understood through its content, theories, research methods, critical standards, and applications. It describes how scientifically oriented scholars expanded communication study beyond formal public address to include intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, organizational, and interorganizational processes. The article emphasizes theory development, varied empirical and descriptive methods, standards for evaluating research and coursework, and applications grounded in research findings rather than solely in rhetorical or artistic principles. It also notes tensions between academic respectability and skill development. The article contributes to field definition by presenting social scientific inquiry …
