A Few Crazy Ladies: How Women Broke Down Barriers And Created A Place For Female Martial Artists In Florida, 1974-1983, Christopher David Thrasher
Florida Historical Quarterly
In September 1974, Black Belt Magazine published a letter from Karen Swanson, a school teacher living in Tallahassee, Florida. Swanson thanked the editors for their recent hire of the New York historian and martial artist Valarie Eads to write a reoccurring column in their magazine on female fighters titled "Fighting Woman." Swanson described herself as an active feminist who wanted to learn self-defense under the guidance of a female teacher. Swanson lamented that there were no female martial arts teachers in north Florida and therefore she had been forced to look for a male instructor. Swanson explained that most male …

The John's Committee: A Historiographic Essay, Judith G. Poucher
Florida Historical Quarterly
As more Johns Committee sources become available in both traditional and online format, scholars can benefit rom an analysis of key primary and secondary sources on the Committee. This essay examines the evolution of Johns Committee historiography, originating with Steven F. Lawson and followed by the works of James Schnur, Stacy Braukman, Judith Poucher, and Karen L. Graves. The latter four authors are the only scholars who have written both book-length studies and articles solely on the Committee. The essay concludes with a review of recent developments inJohns Committee historiography.

Adolinae Marcinskas seems an unlikely candidate to be derided as an illegal immigrant. She had lived in New Jersey from 1907 to 1921, married there and had two children who were American citizens. But for some reason, her husband convinced her that life would be better back in their native Lithuania, and in 1921 he sent her and her children there, promising that he would soon follow. He never did, and in December 1922, she decided to return to the United States on her own, hoping to reunite with her husband. As a woman traveling alone, however, entering the United …

A Perfect Storm: The Ocoee Riot Of 1920, Carlee Hoffmann
Florida Historical Quarterly
On the morning of November 2, 1920, Moses Norman went to the polls in his hometown of Ocoee, Florida, to cast his ballot. Norman was a prominent black man in the small community, owning property that included a productive citrus grove. When he tried to vote, the poll workers turned him away and told him to go home, claiming that he had not properly registered or paid his poll tax. Norman then drove the thirteen miles to Orlando, where he met with John M. Cheney, a prominent Orlando lawyer, Republican candidate for the United States Senate, and trustee of Rollins …

In 1845, as Florida joined the Union, the state legislature promulgated a law which stated that any "assemblies ... by free negroes and mulattoes, slave or slaves, shall be punished ... with a fine not exceeding twenty dollars, or stripes, not exceeding thirty-nine." This measure, along with extensive and punitive slave codes, virtually eliminated opportunities to establish African American schools in the newest slaveholding state. Florida, true to the code of the white South, wanted to eliminate opportunities for slaves and free blacks to congregate and to pursue education for their children. Although based on the pervasive racial norms of …

An "Underground Railway" To Pensacola And The Impending Crisis Over Slavery, Matthew J. Clavin
Florida Historical Quarterly
In June 1850, several months before the United States Congress passed the Fugitive Slave Law, a runaway slave from Pensacola, Florida, became embroiled in the growing sectional conflict. The bondsman's name was Adam, and he was a twenty-one year old blacksmith at the Pensacola Navy Yard who snuck aboard the brig Mary Farrow just prior to its departure for New England. When the ship's captain discovered the stowaway in the ship's hold three days after embarking, he ordered a keelhauling, an archaic punishment whereby victims were thrown overboard and dragged by a rope underneath the boat's keel; the crew refused …

Over the course of a decade, Antonino "Nino" Lyons appeared before the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida at least four times. In 2001, a jury convicted Lyons of crimes carrying a mandatory minimum sentence oflife in federal prison. In 2003, the Honorable Gregory Presnell ordered Lyons to be released on bail, only to be reversed by the Eleventh Circuit. A year later, in 2004, Judge Presnell again ordered Lyons' release, and this time, there was no appeal. Finally, in 2010, Judge Presnell took the extraordinary step of granting Lyons' petition for a certification of actual …

The sky is falling! The skyis falling! Or is it? Today, courts across the country face a difficult task in light of the Supreme Court's recent decision regarding bankruptcy courts' jurisdiction, Stern v. Marshall. Stern held bankruptcy courts are constitutionally proscribed from entering final judgment based on a private, state-law counterclaim "that is not resolved in the process of ruling on a creditor's proof of claim." A bankruptcy court must now consider Stern when a litigant objects to the court's authority. With over 3,000 adversary proceedings pending in the Middle District of Florida for the month of July 2012 alone, …

No one knows exactly what happened on the final voyage of the fishing vessel Andrea Gail or the exact circumstances surrounding how the six crew members aboard met their demise. However, many became familiar with the story of the Andrea Gail and her crew through Sebastian Junger's book about the one-of-a-kind weather phenomenon that caused those six men to perish at sea. Many more became familiar with the story when Warner Bros. Pictures ("Warner Bros.") released the film The Perfect Storm based on Junger's book, featuring a number of high-profile actors such as George Clooney, Diane Lane, and Mark Wahlberg.

You've Come A Long Way, Baby: Stripping Pornography From America's Workplace, Tara R. Price
Florida Historical Quarterly
In Robinson v. Jacksonville Shipyards, Inc., the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida became the first court in the country to hold that the presence of pornography in the workplace-by itself-could constitute a hostile working environment for women, actionable under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Prior to Robinson, courts frequently concluded that Title VII offered no protection to women who felt victimized by the presence of "sexually-oriented pictures and sexual remarks" in the workplace, so long as overt actions targeting particular female employees did not also exist. The opinion-written by Judge Howell …

On January 29, 1970, Judge Ben Krentzman ordered the school board of Manatee County, Florida, to desegregate through the use of busing. This ruling seems innocuous enough in hindsight, certainly a common event in that era. At the time, however, the case of Harvest v. Board of Public Instruction prompted a clash between the determined district judge from the Middle District of Florida and the firebrand, reelection-seeking Governor Claude R. Kirk, Jr.-a controversy that made national news. And though these juicy facts have long since faded into the past, the ramifications of the Harvest decision are still being felt today. …

Looking For Angola: An Archaeological And Ethnohistorical Search For A Nineteenth Century Florida Maroon Community And Its Caribbean Connections, Rosalyn Howard
Florida Historical Quarterly
The "Looking for Angola" project (LFA) commenced on December 12, 2004 when shovels broke ground on the south side of the Manatee River at the point where it meets the Braden River. Based upon historical research, this area is believed to be the former location of Angola. Historian John Lee Williams referred to it as "Negro Point,"1 but in a land claim document filed by two Cuban fishermen it was labeled "Angola."2 The groundbreaking marked the realization of Project Director Vickie Oldham's wish to relate the story of early African American settlers in the Tampa Bay-Sarasota area of Florida. While …

Juan Ponce De Leon And The Discovery Of Florida Reconsidered, Samuel Turner
Florida Historical Quarterly
This paper will reconsider a number of sources, both those commonly cited as well as some that are less well known, that are used in our interpretation and understanding of Juan Ponce de Leon's 1513 voyage of discovery to Florida. A number of ideas that are commonly accepted as fact are reexamined. These include the date of Ponce's first sighting of the east coast of Florida, the specific ship types used during the voyage, as well as the perception that the latitudes provided in our principal source for this voyage suffer from a "northing error." The Melbourne Beach landing theory …

Shipwrecked In The Atlantic World: Reevaluating Jonathan Dickinson's Interactions With Native Peoples Along Florida's Southeastern Coast, Jason Daniels
Florida Historical Quarterly
As the sun rose upon the mangled and beleaguered Reformation on October 23, 1696, Jonathan Dickinson, an Anglo-Jamaican planter in the process of relocating his mercantile affairs to Philadelphia, found himself shipwrecked hundreds of miles from the nearest European colony and stranded amongst Native Americans.2 For modern scholars, Dickinson's account of his two-month odyssey from present-day Jupiter Island to Spanish St. Augustine has proved to be an indispensable ethnographical tract for examining Native Americans living south of the Spanish mission provinces during the late-seventeenth and early-eighteenth centuries. Nevertheless, this complicated and inscrutable text, like much of the Florida peninsula, remains …

Generational Harmony Saves The World: How The Power Of Generation Theory, Gen Z Youth, And Activism Can Mitigate The Climate Crisis, Ryan Hill
Undergraduate Scholarship and Creative Works
This paper explores generations as a concept for understanding and explaining the relationship between major sociohistorical events and societal members, posits generation succession as a way in which long-term social change occurs, compares and contrasts the perceptions of the major generations (Baby Boomers, Gen X, Millennials) created by popular media and scholarly research, illuminates characterizations of the youngest and still-emerging Gen Z, discusses what major sociohistorical events during the time of their adolescence have folded Gen Z into a distinct group with a common generational consciousness, outlines how anthropogenic climate change is a real phenomenon with harmful consequences already affecting …
Emotions, Feelings, And Moods In Tourism And Hospitality Research: Conceptual And Methodological Differences, Maksim Godovykh, Asli Tasci
Emotions, Feelings, And Moods In Tourism And Hospitality Research: Conceptual And Methodological Differences, Maksim Godovykh, Asli Tasci
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Researchers often tend to use the words emotions, feelings, moods, and affect interchangeably, which creates confusion in both conceptual and methodological domains of tourism and hospitality research. However, the insights from neuroscience and psychology demonstrated that there are fundamental differences between these concepts, including their causes, duration, intensity, and outcomes. This research note aims to discuss conceptual and methodological aspects related to using emotions, moods, feelings, and affect, provide comprehensive definitions, and outline opportunities to capture them comprehensively in tourism and hospitality research.
