The Gulf Coast Fish Cheer: Radicalism And The Underground Press In Pensacola, Florida, 1970-1971, Christopher Satterwhite
Florida Historical Quarterly
By the end of the 1960s the underground press in the United States had grown exponentially from five publications in 1965 to hundreds by the end of the decade with a "combined readership that stretched into the millions."1 As the underground press movement flourished throughout the counterculture, this new radical media spread from college campuses to military towns across the country. By 1971, Pensacola, Florida, had joined a growing number of American cities with an underground newspaper. That paper was the Gulf Coast Fish Cheer.
Losing Lincoln: Black Educators, Historical Memory, And The Desegregation Of Lincoln High School In Gainesville, Florida, Kathryn Palmer
Losing Lincoln: Black Educators, Historical Memory, And The Desegregation Of Lincoln High School In Gainesville, Florida, Kathryn Palmer
Florida Historical Quarterly
In 1979 Nat Tillman, a Lincoln High School (LHS) alumnus and one of the Gainesville Sun's first African-American columnists, penned an article advocating for the preservation of Lincoln's history as a "pioneer of black education in Florida." Tillman interviewed Eric Roberts, a member of Lincoln's first graduating class of 1925 about why Lincoln's history as a historically black high school "deserved to be preserved." Like many of Florida's black high schools closed during school integration efforts of the late 1960s and early 70s, Lincoln's roots stretch back to Reconstruction. However, as Florida's second accredited black high school, Roberts praised the …

New Deal Historic Preservation For Key West, Matthew G. Hyland
New Deal Historic Preservation For Key West, Matthew G. Hyland
Florida Historical Quarterly
Preservation of local history and architecture played a fundamental role in economic revitalization of Key West during the Great Depression. With the assistance, and upon the insistence, of the people of Key West, the Federal Emergency Relief Administration (FERA), along with the Civil Works Administration (CWA), the Historic American Building Survey (HABS), and the Works Progress Administration (WPA), preserved and developed Key West's historic resources into tourist attractions, thus forming the base for today's service economy in the Florida Keys. In so doing and scarcely less important, they would engender a new dimension in historic preservation practice and awareness of …

Runaway Slave Advertisements In Antebellum Florida: A Retrospective, Matthew J. Clavin
Runaway Slave Advertisements In Antebellum Florida: A Retrospective, Matthew J. Clavin
Florida Historical Quarterly
As the abolitionist minister's observation suggests, enslaved African Americans were neither content nor happy. Indeed, rom day-to-day acts of covert resistance to brazen acts of open rebellion, slaves in the antebellum United States daily proved the lie of paternalism as even a cursory glance at the historiography of the South over the last half-century attests. Nevertheless, for anyone still unconvinced of the American slaves' thirst for freedom, there is a large cache of historical records that obliterate the myth of black Southerners accepting their enslaved status passively. Published in independently owned newspapers in nearly every significant city and town in …

Currency, Credit, Crisis, And Cuba: The Fed's Early History In Florida, Lesley Mace
Currency, Credit, Crisis, And Cuba: The Fed's Early History In Florida, Lesley Mace
Florida Historical Quarterly
In the early years of the Federal Reserve System, two crises-one in Cuba, the other in Florida-and their resolution tactics provided a potential blueprint for dealing with the national banking crisis that developed after the 1929 stock market crash. The story of that lost opportunity begins with the organization of the Federal Reserve System and the Reserve Banks in the South. After President Woodrow Wilson signed the new Federal Reserve Act into law at the end of 1913, the first task for the-Reserve Bank Organization Committee was to choose the locations of what were known as the "Federal Reserve cities" …

Two vertically arranged photographs of the University of Florida's football team wearing bathing suits on a beach appear in the 1913 edition of the school's yearbook, The Seminole. The top picture shows the squad in formation, ready to run offensive drills. In the bottom one, every player smiles for the camera as they form a human pyramid. A caption under the two photos reads, "'Gators making merry in Cuba."1

Religion And Women's Rights In Florida: An Examination Of The Equal Rights Amendment Legislative Debates, 1972-1982, Laura E. Brock
Florida Historical Quarterly
Florida housewife Adele Kanter's letter was prototypical of religious women who were supporters of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA).3 Community activist and housewife Shirley Spellerberg's letter was representative of religious opponents of the ERA. Women were mobilized to enter the political arena, many for the first time, on both sides of the ERA conflict. Florida was the key battleground state where the ERA failed after an intense decade-long (1972-1982) political battle that was an intersection of religious, gender and social issues. Examining the history of Florida's ERA conflict is significant because religious and social themes recur in contemporary public policy …

A Few Crazy Ladies: How Women Broke Down Barriers And Created A Place For Female Martial Artists In Florida, 1974-1983, Christopher David Thrasher
Florida Historical Quarterly
In September 1974, Black Belt Magazine published a letter from Karen Swanson, a school teacher living in Tallahassee, Florida. Swanson thanked the editors for their recent hire of the New York historian and martial artist Valarie Eads to write a reoccurring column in their magazine on female fighters titled "Fighting Woman." Swanson described herself as an active feminist who wanted to learn self-defense under the guidance of a female teacher. Swanson lamented that there were no female martial arts teachers in north Florida and therefore she had been forced to look for a male instructor. Swanson explained that most male …

The John's Committee: A Historiographic Essay, Judith G. Poucher
Florida Historical Quarterly
As more Johns Committee sources become available in both traditional and online format, scholars can benefit rom an analysis of key primary and secondary sources on the Committee. This essay examines the evolution of Johns Committee historiography, originating with Steven F. Lawson and followed by the works of James Schnur, Stacy Braukman, Judith Poucher, and Karen L. Graves. The latter four authors are the only scholars who have written both book-length studies and articles solely on the Committee. The essay concludes with a review of recent developments inJohns Committee historiography.
