I Get By With A Little Help From My Bots: Implications Of Machine Agents In The Context Of Social Support, Austin Beattie, Andrew C. High
I Get By With A Little Help From My Bots: Implications Of Machine Agents In The Context Of Social Support, Austin Beattie, Andrew C. High
Human-Machine Communication
In this manuscript we discuss the increasing use of machine agents as potential sources of support for humans. Continued examination of the use of machine agents, particularly chatbots (or “bots”) for support is crucial as more supportive interactions occur with these technologies. Building off extant research on supportive communication, this manuscript reviews research that has implications for bots as support providers. At the culmination of the literature review, several propositions regarding how factors of technological efficacy, problem severity, perceived stigma, and humanness affect the process of support are proposed. By reviewing relevant studies, we integrate research on human-machine and supportive …
Human, Hybrid, Or Machine? Exploring The Trustworthiness Of Voice-Based Assistants, Lisa Weidmüller
Human, Hybrid, Or Machine? Exploring The Trustworthiness Of Voice-Based Assistants, Lisa Weidmüller
Human-Machine Communication
This study investigates how people assess the trustworthiness of perceptually hybrid communicative technologies such as voice-based assistants (VBAs). VBAs are often perceived as hybrids between human and machine, which challenges previously distinct definitions of human and machine trustworthiness. Thus, this study explores how the two trustworthiness models can be combined in a hybrid trustworthiness model, which model (human, hybrid, or machine) is most applicable to examine VBA trustworthiness, and whether this differs between respondents with different levels of prior experience with VBAs. Results from two surveys revealed that, overall, the human model exhibited the best model fit; however, the hybrid …

Considering The Context To Build Theory In Hci, Hri, And Hmc: Explicating Differences In Processes Of Communication And Socialization With Social Technologies, Andrew Gambino, Bingjie Liu
Human-Machine Communication
The proliferation and integration of social technologies has occurred quickly, and the specific technologies with which we engage are ever-changing. The dynamic nature of the development and use of social technologies is often acknowledged by researchers as a limitation. In this manuscript, however, we present a discussion on the implications of our modern technological context by focusing on processes of socialization and communication that are fundamentally different from their interpersonal corollary. These are presented and discussed with the goal of providing theoretical building blocks toward a more robust understanding of phenomena of human-computer interaction, human-robot interaction, human-machine communication, and interpersonal …
The Symptom Of Ethics: Rethinking Ethics In The Face Of The Machine, David J. Gunkel
The Symptom Of Ethics: Rethinking Ethics In The Face Of The Machine, David J. Gunkel
Human-Machine Communication
This essay argues that it is the machine that constitutes the symptom of ethics— “symptom” understood as that excluded “part that has no part” in the system of moral consideration. Ethics, which has been historically organized around a human or at least biological subject, needs the machine to define the proper limits of the moral community even if it simultaneously excludes such mechanisms from any serious claim on moral consideration. The argument will proceed in five steps or movements. The first part will define and characterize “the symptom” as it has been operationalized in the work of Slovenian philosopher Slavoj …
Framing The Psycho-Social And Cultural Aspects Of Human-Machine Communication, Leopoldina Fortunati, Autumn P. Edwards
Framing The Psycho-Social And Cultural Aspects Of Human-Machine Communication, Leopoldina Fortunati, Autumn P. Edwards
Human-Machine Communication
In this introduction to the fourth volume of the journal Human-Machine Communication, we present and discuss the nine articles selected for inclusion. In this essay, we aim to frame some crucial psychological, sociological, and cultural aspects of this field of research. In particular, we situate the current scholarship from a historical perspective by (a) discussing humanity’s long walk with hybridity and otherness, at both the cultural and individual development levels, (b) considering how the organization of capital, labor, and gender relations serve as fundamental context for understanding HMC in the present day, and (c) contextualizing the development of the HMC …
A Choctaw Academy Education, Ella Wells Drake
A Choctaw Academy Education, Ella Wells Drake
Florida Historical Quarterly
Ten weary travelers from Florida-eight Apalachicola Indian boys, an agent, and a servant-paused in the chill a Choctaw Academy came into view. The Indian school, standing on an elvated ridgetop overlooking the Kentucky countryside, appeared imposing. The Academy represented an institution of promise and potential, a school where young Indian boys could acquire the English language and Anglo-American values and custom for tribal benefit. In 1830, ninety-eight boys attended the Academy which, despite the name, was an intertribal school. Choctaws, Creeks, Potawatomies, Miamies, and Quapaws directed their education funds and promising students to Choctaw Academy. On Christmas Day, the eight …
Florida's Seed Corn: The History Of The West Florida Seminary During The Civil War, David J. Coles
Florida's Seed Corn: The History Of The West Florida Seminary During The Civil War, David J. Coles
Florida Historical Quarterly
Most students of the Civil War are familiar with the role the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) cadets played in the 1864 Battle of New Market. The young soldiers fought valiantly in that southern victory and suffered more than fifty casualties, including ten dead or mortally wounded. Cadets from the South Carolina Military Academy in Charleston also saw active service, as did those from the Georgia Military Institute and the University of Alabama. Though lesser known than these famous schools, Florida’s Seminary West of the Suwannee was one of only a handful of such schools still operating at the war’s close, …

Countdown To College: Launching Florida Institute Of Technology, Gordon Patterson
Florida Historical Quarterly
East central Florida underwent a revolution in the 1950s as an army of 75,000 technicians, engineers, and scientists poured into the sleepy fishing communities stretching from Titusville to Melbourne along the Atlantic Coast.1 The year 1958 was one of significant change for the country and for Florida. In January, the United States launched its first satellite into orbit. In July, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law the bill creating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). A month later the Defense Department’s Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) called for the creation of a new super-rocket code-named Saturn.2 Less attention …

Sarasota: Hardship And Tourism In The 1930s, Ruthmary Bauer
Sarasota: Hardship And Tourism In The 1930s, Ruthmary Bauer
Florida Historical Quarterly
From 1922 to 1926, Sarasota experienced the top-of-the-world exhilaration of the great Florida land boom as it evolved from a frontier town into a modern city. During this crucial period Sarasotans debated the course of the city’s development. Some residents wanted the city to become a deepwater port while others, among them developers John Ringling and Owen Burns, envisioned Sarasota as a metropolitan resort for the moderately wealthy settler and the winter visitor. During the early and mid-1920s real estate developers embarked on a flurry of new construction that included plush resort hotels, skyscrapers, and upscale residential communities. The city’s …
Ringing Up A School: Mary Mcleod Bethune's Impact On Daytona, Audrey Thomas Mccluskey
Ringing Up A School: Mary Mcleod Bethune's Impact On Daytona, Audrey Thomas Mccluskey
Florida Historical Quarterly
The limited scholarly attention given to Mary McLeod Bethune has focused either on her pioneering efforts to integrate the federal bureaucracy during the presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt or on her equally trailblazing work in the black women’s club movement.1 To be sure, historians have recognized Bethune as one of this country’s most important educators, but this critical aspect of her career remains imperfectly understood. This is especially true of the school that she founded for women in 1904, which became the coeducational liberal arts institution Bethune-Cookman College.
From Camp Hill To Harvard Yard: The Early Years Of Claude D. Pepper, Ric A. Kabat
From Camp Hill To Harvard Yard: The Early Years Of Claude D. Pepper, Ric A. Kabat
Florida Historical Quarterly
Claude D. Pepper was born into economically deprived and socially humble circumstances on September 8, 1900, in Chambers County, Alabama. He grew up acquiring the traditional values of hard work, delayed gratification, Christian moral teachings, and, most importantly, a belief in cooperation and communitarian responsibility. These ethical standards shaped his personal life and propelled him into one of the most longstanding and productive political careers in American history. Together with contemporary liberal politicians from the South, such as Alabama congressman Carl Elliott, Senator and later Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black, Senator John J. Sparkman, Senator J. William Fulbright, and Lyndon …

William Alexander Blount: Defender Of The Old South And Advocate Of A New South, Thomas Muir, Jr.
William Alexander Blount: Defender Of The Old South And Advocate Of A New South, Thomas Muir, Jr.
Florida Historical Quarterly
William Alexander Blount, as a child, had experienced the frustrations of poverty and disorder resulting from the Civil War. While steeped in many of the values and traditions of the Old South, Blount was one of the new generation of southern leaders who, after the end of Reconstruction in 1877, strove to modernize the South through industrialization and closer cooperation with northern capitalists. His keen intellect and sharp legal mind served him well as a corporate lawyer for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad in Florida. Blount’s legal career in Pensacola spanned the Bourbon period, roughly from 1877 to 1900, when …

Educational Leadership Preparation And Professional Roles: Are We Serving The Needs Of Leadership Roles Along The Leadership Continuum?, Daniel W. Eadens, Marjorie Ceballos
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
As the complexity of school and district contexts continue to evolve, there is a need to prepare leaders at various points along the leadership continuum. Through this survey research, we analyzed student perceptions of program effectiveness (N = 408) from 2013 to 2020 in one educational leadership program through the lens of student professional roles (e.g., teachers, instructional coaches, central office personnel). Results varied with instructional coaches demonstrating higher perceptions of effectiveness and central office personnel lower perceptions. Findings from this study could serve as the impetus for further research as educational leadership programs serve diverse educational leadership roles.

Heterogenous Reduction Of Co2 Over Boron-Rich Alb2, Jose C. Berger
Heterogenous Reduction Of Co2 Over Boron-Rich Alb2, Jose C. Berger
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Evidence suggests that the recent drastic changes in the global climate have been caused by greenhouse gases, especially CO2. As a result, scientists are aiming to develop processes that either minimize the production of these gases or convert them into products of higher value. To that end, the catalytic properties of a two-dimensional boron-rich material were investigated. Herein is reported that such a material can reduce CO2 into benzene, C3 species, and C4 species at relatively low temperatures (225-450 ℃) and pressures (0.38 MPa). Current data suggest that a low-temperature induction period (e.g., 225 ℃) …
Impact Of Proton And Neutron Irradiation On Carrier Transport Properties In Ga2o3, Andrew C. Silverman
Impact Of Proton And Neutron Irradiation On Carrier Transport Properties In Ga2o3, Andrew C. Silverman
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This project studies the properties of minority charge carriers in beta gallium oxide (β -Ga2O3). The behavior of minority carriers is of high importance as it greatly affects conduction and consequently device performance. Cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy and EBIC (Electron Beam Induced Current) are the main experimental techniques used to study minority carrier behavior.
High energy radiation affects minority carrier properties through damage to the material and through the production of carrier traps that reduce the conductivity and mobility of the material. In this investigation, we study the effects of various kinds of high energy radiation on …
The Effects Of Common Low-Load Blood Flow Restriction Training Protocols On Muscle Excitation And Fatigue, Taylor M. Aldeghi
The Effects Of Common Low-Load Blood Flow Restriction Training Protocols On Muscle Excitation And Fatigue, Taylor M. Aldeghi
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Low-load blood flow restriction (LLBFR) training has been shown to elicit greater increases in muscle hypertrophy and strength compared to traditional low-load training, yet few studies have compared the effectiveness of different LLBFR protocols. To our knowledge, no previous study has compared the acute neuromuscular changes induced by two common LLBFR protocols: 30-15-15-15 repetitions (BFR-75) and four sets of repetitions performed to volitional failure (BFR-F). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to use surface electromyography (sEMG) to compare changes in muscle excitation and fatigue during BFR-75 and BFR-F protocols. Ten women (mean ± SD age = 22 ± 3.5 …
Investigation Of Catalysis Of Nitration By Cytochrome P450s, Lannika Johnson
Investigation Of Catalysis Of Nitration By Cytochrome P450s, Lannika Johnson
Honors Undergraduate Theses
TxtE is a protein related to cytochrome P450 enzymes, which catalyze a number of reactions that typically involve oxygen and not nitrogen. It has been discovered that TxtE can nitrate tryptophan through an unusual reaction in which it uses nitric oxide (NO) as a nitrogen donor to install the nitro group despite NO typically being considered toxic to bacteria. This project will determine if all cytochromes P450 can catalyze nitration as long as they are given NO. This will have an impact on understanding drug delivery and metabolism for which nitration is important.
Comparative Evaluation Of Assemblers For Metagenomic Data Analysis, Matheus Pavini Franco Ferreira
Comparative Evaluation Of Assemblers For Metagenomic Data Analysis, Matheus Pavini Franco Ferreira
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Metagenomics is a cultivation-independent approach for obtaining the genomic composition of microbial communities. Microbial communities are ubiquitous in nature. Microbes which are associated with the human body play important roles in human health and disease. These roles span from protecting us against infections from other bacteria, to being the causes of these diseases. A deeper understanding of these communities and how they function inside our bodies allows for advancements in treatments and preventions for these diseases. Recent developments in metagenomics have been driven by the emergence of Next-Generation Sequencing technologies and Third-Generation Sequencing technologies that have enabled cost-effective DNA sequencing …
The Fusion Between Differentiated Instruction And Social-Emotional Learning In Early Childhood Development And Education, Brianna Perry
The Fusion Between Differentiated Instruction And Social-Emotional Learning In Early Childhood Development And Education, Brianna Perry
Honors Undergraduate Theses
This thesis introduces a novel application of the fusion between Differentiated Instruction (DI) and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) as a needed and reciprocal relationship in the early childhood classroom. DI is an approach to teaching that aims to tailor the teacher’s instruction to the individual needs of each child. Instruction, content, and students' expression of knowledge can each be differentiated. Differentiation itself is a vast topic that begs to be narrowed and balanced. Some teachers experience obstacles to differentiation or struggle to efficiently differentiate their classroom. In an attempt to solve this phenomenon, this thesis explored DI and specifically its …
Worker Cooperatives And Globalization: A Case Study Of Fagor Electrodométicos Utilizing Game Theory, Bradley C. Williams
Worker Cooperatives And Globalization: A Case Study Of Fagor Electrodométicos Utilizing Game Theory, Bradley C. Williams
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The internationally recognized and flagship worker cooperative Fagor Electrodomésticos was founded in 1956 and was heralded as a success story before declaring bankruptcy in 2013. In this thesis, I examine the existing literature regarding worker cooperatives and provide historical background on Fagor Electrodomésticos. I then focus on one of the factors credited by the literature as contributing to its failure and other worker cooperatives broadly, the internal decision-making process. To analyze the role of the internal decision-making process I develop a game-theoretic model that sheds light on the dynamics of this process. This model contains three actors each of whom …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Silver-Gold Nanocage With Enhanced Thermal Stability, Victoria Ten
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Silver-gold nanocages have attracted considerable research interest recently due to their excellent performance in the fields of biomedicine and photocatalysis. These applications oftentimes manipulate at elevated temperatures and therefore impose demands on the thermal stability of the cage structures. To better understand this subject, in this work, we systematically evaluated the thermal stability of two nanocages with different wall thicknesses of 3.8 nm and 13 nm, both in the solution-phase (diethylene glycol) and solid-phase (in-situ STEM). The results revealed that the nanocages with thicker walls exhibited better thermal stabilities in both phases. By monitoring and analyzing the morphology changes of …

Mechanical Understanding And Optimization Of Template Guided Core Needle Biopsy, Isaac Girgis
Mechanical Understanding And Optimization Of Template Guided Core Needle Biopsy, Isaac Girgis
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Prostate cancer is the second highest cause of cancer related deaths among men. According to the diagnostic pathway for prostate cancer, a prostate biopsy is performed if an individual showed signs of lesions through high prostate-specific antigen (PSA) concentration or suggestive digital rectal exam (DRE) results. The core biopsy mechanism involves inserting a beveled needle into the organ and removing a cylindrical fragment of tissue. Many factors affect the histological quality of the sample, including fragmentation, needle deflection, and needle insertion velocity. If a biopsy core is not clinically viable, an alternative core will need to be taken, resulting in …
