Adaptive Analytic Continuation For The State Transition Tensors Of The Two-Body Problem, Tahsinul Haque Tasif
Adaptive Analytic Continuation For The State Transition Tensors Of The Two-Body Problem, Tahsinul Haque Tasif
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
In the past few decades, Kessler syndrome (named after Donald J. Kessler) has become a point of concern in the field of Space Situational Awareness and the future of space missions. It refers to a scenario, where space debris in Earth's orbits collides and creates an exponential increase in space debris numbers leading to more collisions and more debris. In order to handle the resulting challenges like conjunction analysis, tracking, and probability of collisions, the State Transition Matrix (STM) and Tensors (STTs) of the orbit problem play a significant role. In addition, STM and STTs are ubiquitous in spaceflight dynamics, …
Observation Of Novel Phases Of Quantum Matter Beyond Topological Insulator, Sabin Regmi
Observation Of Novel Phases Of Quantum Matter Beyond Topological Insulator, Sabin Regmi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Because of the unique electronic properties, intriguing novel phenomena, and potentiality in quantum device applications, the quantum materials with non-trivial band structures have enticed a bulk of research works over the last two decades. The experimental discovery of the three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs) - bulk insulators with surface conduction via spin-polarized electrons - kicked off the flurry of research interests towards such materials, which resulted in the experimental discovery of new topological phases of matter beyond TIs. The topological semimetallic phase in Dirac, Weyl, and nodal-line semimetals is an example, where the classification depends on the dimensionality, degeneracy, and symmetry …
The Facile Preparation Of Bis(Imino)Pyridine Complexes Via Mechanochemistry And Inorganic Synthons Via Benign Reductants, Thomas Shaw
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This thesis is comprised of two key themes: (i) leveraging mechanochemical synthetic methods for the green preparation of bis(imino)pyridine ligands and associated first row transition metal coordination complexes, and (ii) the preparation and characterization of both historic and novel mid-valent inorganic synthons via the use of dimethylphenylsilane as a stoichiometric reducing agent. The first portion of this thesis highlights the utilization of solvent-free vibratory ball-milling in lieu of traditional, solvent-based refluxes. A variety of both bis(imino)pyridine ligands and complexes were formed in drastically reduced timeframes with solvent-economical work-up procedures. This methodology was also leveraged for the isolation of acetyl(imino)pyridine ligands …
Multi-Plane Light Conversion: Devices And Applications, Yuanhang Zhang
Multi-Plane Light Conversion: Devices And Applications, Yuanhang Zhang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Multi-plane light conversion (MPLC) has recently been developed as a versatile tool for manipulating spatial distributions of the optical field through repeated phase modulations. An MPLC Device consists of a series of phase masks separated by free-space propagation. It can convert one orthogonal set of beams into another orthogonal set through unitary transformation, which is useful for a number of applications. In telecommunication, for example, mode-division multiplexing (MDM) is a promising technology that will enable continued scaling of capacity by employing spatial modes of a single fiber. MPLC has shown great potential in MDM devices with ultra-wide bandwidth, low insertion …
Data Dimensionality Reduction Techniques: What Works With Machine Learning Models, Yuting Chen
Data Dimensionality Reduction Techniques: What Works With Machine Learning Models, Yuting Chen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
High-dimensional data has a wide range of applications in research, such as education, health, social media, and many other research fields. However, the high dimensionality of data can raise many problems for data analyses. This study focuses on commonly used techniques of dimensionality reduction for machine learning models, which play an essential and inevitable role in data prepossessing and statistical analysis. The main issues of high-dimensional data for machine learning tasks include the accuracy of data classification and visualization in machine learning models. Therefore, in this study, machine learning algorithms are used to predict and classify datasets to evaluate the …
Distributed Detection In Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks, Ghazaleh Ardeshiri
Distributed Detection In Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks, Ghazaleh Ardeshiri
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
A conventional wireless sensor networks (WSN), consisting of sensors powered by nonrechargeable batteries, has a strictly limited lifetime. Energy harvesting (EH) from the environment is a promising solution to address the energy constraint problem in conventional WSNs, and to render these networks to self-sustainable networks with perpetual lifetimes. In EH-powered WSNs, where sensors are capable of harvesting and storing energy, power control is necessary to balance the rates of energy harvesting and energy consumption for data transmission. In addition, wireless communication channels change randomly in time due to fading. These together prompt the need for developing new power control strategies …
Advanced Deep Learning Methodologies For Deepfake Detection, Aminollah Khormali
Advanced Deep Learning Methodologies For Deepfake Detection, Aminollah Khormali
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The recent advances in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and an abundance of training samples along with robust computational resources have significantly propelled the field of AI-generated fake information in all kinds, e.g., deepfakes. Deepfakes are among the most sinister types of misinformation, posing large-scale and severe security and privacy risks targeting critical governmental institutions and ordinary people across the world. The fact that deepfakes are AI-generated digital content and not actual events captured by a camera implies that they still can be detected using advanced AI models. Although the deepfake detection task has …
Figuring Embedded Librarianship: An Analysis Of The Embedded Journalist Metaphor In The Professional Discourse, Rachel L. Edford
Figuring Embedded Librarianship: An Analysis Of The Embedded Journalist Metaphor In The Professional Discourse, Rachel L. Edford
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
In the wake of the COVID pandemic, many academic libraries sought virtual instruction options, like the embedded librarian model, bringing renewed interest to the topic. Debates defining embedded librarianship are plentiful and varied, but a review of the professional literature reveals a commonly used metaphor comparing embedded librarians to embedded journalists. This paper analyses the prevalence of that metaphor in the professional discourse through the lens of cognitive metaphor theory (CMT) to reveal the semantic and pragmatic implications of its use. CMT highlights the power of figurative language to reflect and define professional identities. The metaphor’s militaristic rhetoric counters negative …

Hydrodynamic Limitations To Mangrove Seedling Retention In Subtropical Estuaries, Kelly M. Kibler, Christian Pilato, Linda Walters, Melinda Donnelly, Jyotismita Taye
Flow-biota Interaction and Natural Infrastructure Design
Mangrove forest sustainability hinges upon propagule recruitment and seedling retention. This study evaluates biophysical limitations to mangrove seedling persistence by measuring anchoring force of two mangrove species (Rhizophora mangle and Avicennia germinans). Anchoring force was measured in 362 seedlings via lateral pull-tests administered in mangrove forests of two subtropical estuaries and in laboratory-based experiments. Removal mechanism varied with seedling age: newly-established seedlings failed due to root pull-out while seedlings older than 3 months failed by root breakage. Anchoring force of R. mangle seedlings was consistently and significantly greater than A. germinans (GLM: p = 0.002), however force to …
Losing Lincoln: Black Educators, Historical Memory, And The Desegregation Of Lincoln High School In Gainesville, Florida, Kathryn Palmer
Losing Lincoln: Black Educators, Historical Memory, And The Desegregation Of Lincoln High School In Gainesville, Florida, Kathryn Palmer
Florida Historical Quarterly
In 1979 Nat Tillman, a Lincoln High School (LHS) alumnus and one of the Gainesville Sun's first African-American columnists, penned an article advocating for the preservation of Lincoln's history as a "pioneer of black education in Florida." Tillman interviewed Eric Roberts, a member of Lincoln's first graduating class of 1925 about why Lincoln's history as a historically black high school "deserved to be preserved." Like many of Florida's black high schools closed during school integration efforts of the late 1960s and early 70s, Lincoln's roots stretch back to Reconstruction. However, as Florida's second accredited black high school, Roberts praised the …

Throwing The Explorer Out With The Fountain: American History Textbooks And Juan Ponce De Leon, Roger Chapman
Florida Historical Quarterly
Someone once critically categorized American history textbooks, perhaps unfairly, as "fat, dull boring books that mention everything but explain practically nothing."1 A cursory survey of US history textbooks on the treatment of Juan Ponce de Leon and the "discovery" of Florida would suggest historical content is like an ice cube melting in the sun.2

The Complex Legacy Of School Desegregation In Duval County, Olga Balderas
The Complex Legacy Of School Desegregation In Duval County, Olga Balderas
Florida Historical Quarterly
In 1971, in Mims v. Duval County School Board, United States District Court Judge Gerald Tjoflat, with the goal of eliminating the vestiges of legalized public school segregation, issued an order re-assigning students in Duval County. The order, which mandated the closing of several schools and affected thousands of students in schools across the county, temporarily resolved years of litigation and resulted in the almost immediate integration of Duval County schools. The Mims desegregation order has been rightly praised for resulting in the swift integration of Duval County schools; something that the Duval County School Board was unable to accomplish …

Thomas De Saliere Tucker: Reconciling Industrial And Liberal Arts Education At Florida's Normal School For Colored Teachers, 1887-1901, Peter A. Dumbuya
Florida Historical Quarterly
At one and the same time, Thomas de Saliere Tucker's life and career in academia exemplified the triumph of liberty and human rights over slavery in the second half of the 19th century and the difficulty often encountered by those who challenged the long-held notion that equal education could be provided to blacks and whites in separate but equal educational institutions. In 1889 the Florida Superintendent of Public Instruction proclaimed that "it has become a settled policy in the State that competent colored teachers shall be employed to teach the colored children and youth."1 Seven years later, the United States …

Stephen Hawking's book, A Brief History in Time begins with a short passage about a well-known scientist giving a public lecture on astronomy and the meaning of the universe... "He described how the earth &ts around the sun and how the sun, in turn, around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady in the back of the room got up and said. "What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise." The scientist …
Florida's Sledd Affair: Andrew Sledd And The Fight For Higher Education In Florida, Carl Van Ness
Florida's Sledd Affair: Andrew Sledd And The Fight For Higher Education In Florida, Carl Van Ness
Florida Historical Quarterly
Andrew Sledd served only briefly as president of the University of Florida from 1904 to 1909. Under constant attack during his short tenure Sledd nonetheless managed to achieve more than many of his successors. The university has never acknowledged his contributions, and his presidency has been largely overshadowed by that of his rival and successor, Albert A. Murphree. Murphree, president from 1909 to 1927, achieved iconic status when a statue was raised in his honor in 1949. The imposing figure of Murphree in academic garb presides eternally in the campus historic district.
Selling Education In The Shape Of A Shuttle, Margaret A. Weitekamp
Selling Education In The Shape Of A Shuttle, Margaret A. Weitekamp
Florida Historical Quarterly
At some point in the early- to mid-1980s, probably in 1983 or 1984 when he was about ten or eleven years old, my younger brother, Raymond, wrote a letter to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), volunteering to be the first child in space. He wanted to fly as a passenger on NASA's Space Transportation System, a vehicle known better as the Space Shuttle. In response, he received a large envelope from NASA stuffed with fact sheets and brochures as well as posters and stickers that soon decorated his bedroom and filled a scrapbook. Although Ray's desire to volunteer …

Why Was Antebellum Florida Murderous? A Quantitative Analysis Of Homicide In Florida, 1821-1861, James M. Denham
Florida Historical Quarterly
Before the Civil War, Florida was one of the most murderous places in the United States. Its homicide rate was rivaled only by Texas and California.1 When it came to murders of or by blacks, Florida was typical for a slave state. But its white citizens killed each other at an extraordinary rate-usually three or four times the rate in most other slave states and eight to ten times the prevailing rate during the Second Seminole War, 1835-42, and the secession crisis, 1858-61.
The Struggle For Minority Representation In Florida, 1960-1990, Peyton Mccrary
The Struggle For Minority Representation In Florida, 1960-1990, Peyton Mccrary
Florida Historical Quarterly
In 1960 African Americans in the South were substantially disfranchised by racially discriminatory registration procedures. A little over a third of the black voting age population was registered, and whites were registered at more than twice that rate.1 Not surprisingly, state legislatures in the region were all white, although a few local governments had elected a black person to public office from time to time in the years since World War II -- usually from single-member districts in the black part of town.2 By 1990 this portrait of inequality had been transformed beyond recognition. Formal barriers to registration and voting …

I Was One Of The First To See Daylight: Black Women At Predominantly White Colleges And Universities In Florida Since 1959, Stephanie Y. Evans
Florida Historical Quarterly
Kitty Oliver, a celebrated journalist, nonfiction writer, and oral historian, entered the University of Florida in 1965. She was one of only 35 African American students of 18,000 enrolled and one of only 5 black freshmen to integrate campus housing. Her story, told in Multicolored Memories of a Black Southern Girl (2001), is intriguing for its portrayal of the first-wave of black students who integrated the predominantly white institutions in the Florida State University System. Oliver, from Jacksonville, traced her mother's roots to the South Carolina Gullah people. She was an only child and the first in her family to …

Rassling A Governor: Defiance, Desegregation, Claude Kirk, And The Politics Of Richard Nixon's Southern Strategy, Randy Sanders
Florida Historical Quarterly
In early April 1970, at a time when intransigence concerning desegregation measures below the Mason-Dixon line seemed to have played itself out, the entire nation watched as a southern governor challenged federal authority more directly than Orval Faubus or Ross Barnett or Gorge Wallace ever had. The 1970 confrontation sprang from political considerations: a governor seeking to bolster his chances for reelection defied a president who employed subterfuge to minimize the political liabilities of his desegregation enforcement duties. Historians and political observers of the 1960 and 1970s often refer to these Republican political appeals to the former Confederate states as …

Embracing Ai-Based Education: Perceived Social Presence Of Human Teachers And Expectations About Machine Teachers In Online Education, Jihyun Kim, Kelly Merrill Jr., Kun Xu, Deanna D. Sellnow
Human-Machine Communication
Technological advancements in education have turned the idea of machines as teachers into a reality. To better understand this phenomenon, the present study explores how college students develop expectations (or anticipations) about a machine teacher, particularly an AI teaching assistant. Specifically, the study examines whether students’ previous experiences with online courses taught by a human teacher would influence their expectations about AI teaching assistants in future online courses. An online survey was conducted to collect data from college students in the United States. Findings indicate that positively experienced social presence of a human teacher helps develop positive expectations about an …
Sex With Robots And Human-Machine Sexualities: Encounters Between Human-Machine Communication And Sexuality Studies, Marco Dehnert
Sex With Robots And Human-Machine Sexualities: Encounters Between Human-Machine Communication And Sexuality Studies, Marco Dehnert
Human-Machine Communication
Sex robots are a controversial topic. Understood as artificial-intelligence enhanced humanoid robots designed for use in partnered and solo sex, sex robots offer ample opportunities for theorizing from a Human-Machine Communication (HMC) perspective. This comparative literature review conjoins the seemingly disconnected literatures of HMC and sexuality studies (SeS) to explore questions surrounding intimacy, love, desire, sex, and sexuality among humans and machines. In particular, I argue for understanding human-machine sexualities as communicative sexuotechnical-assemblages, extending previous efforts in both HMC and SeS for more-than-human, ecological, and more fluid approaches to humans and machines, as well as to sex and sexuality. This …
