Numerical Simulation Of Air-Conditioning Heat Recovery Water Heating Systems, Amir H. Gorji
Numerical Simulation Of Air-Conditioning Heat Recovery Water Heating Systems, Amir H. Gorji
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A computer simulation program called TRNSYS (Transient System Simulation) was used to model two air-conditioning waste heat recovery water heating configurations. The first model is a heat recovery unit (HRU) that utilizes an 80-gallon storage tank in conjunction with a conventional home air-conditioning system. The second model is similar to the first, except that there is an additional 80-gallon preheat storage tank. An attempt was made to compare simulation results with experimental field data. However, due to problems encountered during the field tests, such as equipment and/or instrumentation failure, there were not enough experimental data to make a rigorous comparison. …
A Performance Comparison Of Solar Radiation Predictive Models For Both Fixed And Tracking Surfaces, William F. Marion
A Performance Comparison Of Solar Radiation Predictive Models For Both Fixed And Tracking Surfaces, William F. Marion
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Accurate performance prediction for a system utilizing solar energy requires accurate estimates of the solar radiation received by the collector surface. This thesis compares the performance of five different diffuse solar radiation models in estimating the diffuse radiation received by a tilted surface in the warm, humid climate of Central Florida.
The following models were studied: Isotropic Model, Temps and Coulson Model, Klucher Model, Hay Model, and Perez Model. The models were evaluated for both a fixed south facing surface and for three different tracking schemes suitable for photovoltaic applications. Model estimates were then compared to the solar radiation data …
A Zero Extraction And Separation Technique For Surface Acoustic Wave And Digital Signal Processing Fir Filter Implementation, Keith V. Lindsay
A Zero Extraction And Separation Technique For Surface Acoustic Wave And Digital Signal Processing Fir Filter Implementation, Keith V. Lindsay
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Presented is a new method of separating the zeros of a Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter producing optimal digital filter of surface acoustic wave (SAW) design implementation. Overviews of zero extraction algorithms and of FIR filter design using the Remez Exchange algorithm are presented (McClellen et al. 1973).
The computer aided design (CAD) procedure presented allows the designer to specify the general filter characteristic which the Remez algorithm translates to FIR time domain coefficients. These coefficients are readily translated to the frequency (z) domain, producing an Nth order polynomial in z. The characteristic polynomial is factored to determine all roots …
The Design And Implementation Of Surface Acoustic Wave Devices For Linear Fm And Nonlinear Fm Pulse Compression Technique For Radar Applications, James C. Walker
The Design And Implementation Of Surface Acoustic Wave Devices For Linear Fm And Nonlinear Fm Pulse Compression Technique For Radar Applications, James C. Walker
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this work is to design, fabricate, and compare dispersive SAW devices using both linear FM and a new non-linear FM scheme. This new non-linear FM scheme uses the Blackman function as the modulating signal of the FM waveform. Up-chirped and V-chirped devices for both linear and the new non-linear FM scheme and their corresponding matched filters are compared.
Design considerations are discussed in detail. An efficient sampling algorithm (which can also be applied to other non-linearly modulated FM waveforms) developed to facilitate the design of the SAW devices is presented.
Switched-Capacitor Programmable Sallen And Key Lowpass Filters, Karl P. Eriksson
Switched-Capacitor Programmable Sallen And Key Lowpass Filters, Karl P. Eriksson
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This thesis deals with a different approach to switched-capacitor filters than previously seen by the use of a Sallen and Key topology. It is shown that a Sallen and Key second-order topology approach to a switched-capacitor filter gives reasonable filter performance results, contrary to what the literature leads one to expect. It is also shown that the Sallen and Key second-order topology with modification to a third-order section with buffers results in a high performance switched-capacitor filter with fewer components than previous switched-capacitor filters. This results in fewer monolithic chip size requirements, reduced power requirements, and less cost. Higher order …

Individual Differences In Training Performance: The Derivation Of A Prediction Model, Brenda J. Hoskin
Individual Differences In Training Performance: The Derivation Of A Prediction Model, Brenda J. Hoskin
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This research examines the use of non-cognitive personality measures as supplements to traditional cognitive ability measures for predicting training performance. The Hogan Personality Inventory (HPI) significantly predicted an overall performance measure (R2 = .17) for Navy BE&E Students (N = 155). However, when applied as a supplemental predictor composite to the military cognitive measure (ASVAB), the resulting increase in R2 (.04) failed to attain significance, F(6, 144) = 2.17, p > .05). In further analyses, several HPI and ASVAB scales combined to significantly predict selected performance criteria. The ASVAB remained as the primary source of information. It is quite …

Flow Injection And Photometric Determination Of S(Iv) In Rainwater With Pararosaniline, Frank A. Hedgecock
Flow Injection And Photometric Determination Of S(Iv) In Rainwater With Pararosaniline, Frank A. Hedgecock
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The photometric pararosaniline (pRA) method for determination of S(IV) has been adapted to flow injection sample processing (FIA). Prominent features of the method include a limit of detection of 0.010 ppm of dissolved sulfur dioxide and a sampling rate of 20 per hour. The concentration range investigated was 0.010 to 0.200 ppm S02. Sequential samples were collected from two rainstorms and SO2 concentrations were measured for 19 samples. The suppression of interference by Cr(III), Mn(II), and Fe(III) using 1,2-cyclohexylenedinitrilotetraacetic acid (CDTA) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was investigated. A comparison of the adapted FIA method and its parent …
The Use Of Scheffe-Equivalent Equations To Predict Physical Properties Of Neoprene, Cheng Y. Loh
The Use Of Scheffe-Equivalent Equations To Predict Physical Properties Of Neoprene, Cheng Y. Loh
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this study is to find a more organized and directed approach to build models for mixture systems. An attempt is made to generate and then compare Scheffe (mixture) models with those generated by McGee using the ‘conventional’ method for neoprene data. The models are judged on their ability to predict physical properties of neoprene by comparing the following: predicted and actual values by inspection; the calculated % error of prediction; the squared multiple correlation coefficients; adjusted squared multiple correlation coefficients; the Fisher statistic and significance probability. Scheffe models do not have an intercept term and test statistics …

Ion Selective Electrodes Based On Aza- Substituted Crown Ethers, Lisa Ann Wellington
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A cation-responsive electrode system has been developed which incorporates aza-substituted crown ethers as ligands. In a novel application, uncomplexed crown ethers were used in the pelletized form for ionic transport. Electrodes have been produced which can be conditioned for a particular ion and following their use, be reconditioned and reused for other ions. Preparation method and lifetime studies are included.
The responses of two crown ethers with plasticizers were evaluated for thirteen representative cations. The concentration range covered in each evaluation was 1 x 10-1 to 1 x 10-7 M. For those ions exhibiting Nernstian or near-Nernstian response, …
Multiprocessor Scheduling With Practical Constraints, Kenneth Burton Donovan
Multiprocessor Scheduling With Practical Constraints, Kenneth Burton Donovan
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The problem of scheduling tasks onto multiprocessor systems has increasing practical importance as more applications are being addressed with multiprocessor systems. Actual applications and multiprocessor systems have many characteristics which become constraints to the general scheduling problem of minimizing the schedule length. These practical constraints include precedence relations and communication delays between tasks, yet few researchers have considered both these constraints when developing schedulers.
This work examines a more general multiprocessor scheduling problem, which includes these practical scheduling constraints, and develops a new scheduling heuristic using a list scheduler with dynamically computed priorities. The dynamic priority heuristic is compared against …
Epsilon Precedence Grammars And Languages, Masoud T. Milani
Epsilon Precedence Grammars And Languages, Masoud T. Milani
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The classes of simple and weak precedence grammars are generalized to include ε-rules (productions with the empty right parts). The descriptive power of epsilon simple precedence (ESP) grammars increases directly with the number of ε-rules permitted; the class of ESP grammars with no ε-rules, ESP0, is identical to the class of simple precedence grammars; ESP grammars with at most one ε-rule, ESP1, define a class of languages which properly includes the class of ESP0 languages, but is itself properly included in the class of deterministic, context-free languages. In general, ESP grammars having at most i …
New Synthetic Applications Of Enaminoketones, Timothy J. Buck
New Synthetic Applications Of Enaminoketones, Timothy J. Buck
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This report discusses research concerning synthetic applications of enaminoketones. The work may be divided into four parts as follows: a) replacement of the dimethylamino group of certain enaminones by other amine groups through a simple procedure; b) formation of 3-alkyl-pyrazoles; c) formation of 2-amino-4-alkyl-pyrimidines; d) synthesis and subsequent reduction of iminium salts. The starting materials (E-1-(N,N-dimethylamino)-1-alkene-3-ones) have been condensed with hydrazine and guanidine to form pyrazoles and pyrimidines, respectively. The same starting materials have been reacted with POCl3 in CH2Cl2 to produce chlorovinyliminium salts. These have then been reacted in situ with reducing agents to produce …
Direct Digital Control Of A Liquid Level/Temperature Control Unit, Pedro J. Claudio
Direct Digital Control Of A Liquid Level/Temperature Control Unit, Pedro J. Claudio
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A direct digital control algorithm was implemented on a liquid level and temperature control unit. Two control schemes were implemented on the system and the results were compared against a fourth order Runge-Kutta solution.
Both control schemes involved proportional feedback with dynamic adjustment of the operating point. It was found that the control scheme that contained a feedforward component which dealt with the inlet water temperature had a superior dynamic response to setpoint changes. Steady state offsets in both control schemes were attributable to model parameter estimation errors. Differences between the actual and predicted system dynamic response were also attributable …
Cost Effective Design Of The Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment System, Robert P. Huguenard
Cost Effective Design Of The Activated Sludge Wastewater Treatment System, Robert P. Huguenard
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
In current design practice the components of the complete mix activated sludge system are designed as individual units with little or no appreciation for the process interactions which occur between system components. To achieve acceptable process efficiency and to realize cost effectiveness a unified design approach is necessary. This research effort was initiated to define the characteristics of the economic optimum complete mix activated sludge configuration while considering system interactions.
A computer program was developed for the completion of the process design and the economic analysis of the aeration basins, the settling basins, and the return sludge pumping facilities for …
Transient Critical Heat Flux, Kemal O. Pasamehmetoglu
Transient Critical Heat Flux, Kemal O. Pasamehmetoglu
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The term Critical Heat Flux (CHF) is used in boiling heat transfer to describe the local value of the heat flux at which a characteristic reduction in heat transfer coefficient first occurs. In today’s technology, the CHF is a phenomenon related to the design and safety of various important devices.
A major limitation on the thermal design of a light-water reactor (LWR) is the necessity to maintain an adequate safety margin between the CHF and the local heat flux. Extended operations at local power levels in excess of the CHF can lead to high temperature oxidation and embrittlement or melting …
Design Considerations In The Development Of An Automated Cartographic System, Robert L. Holden
Design Considerations In The Development Of An Automated Cartographic System, Robert L. Holden
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Cartography, the art of producing maps, is an extremely tedious job which is prone to human error and requires many hours for the completion of maps and their digital data bases. Cartography is a classic example of a job that needs to be automated. Through the new advances in image processing and pattern recognition, the automation of this task is made possible with the cartographer acting as a supervisor. This paper reviews current cartographic techniques, and examines design considerations for a fully automated cartographic system. The benefits of such a system would be improvements in speed, flexibility, and accuracy. The …
Design Of A Two-Layer, Capacitively Coupled, Microstrip Patch Antenna Element For Broadband Applications, Robert T. Cock
Design Of A Two-Layer, Capacitively Coupled, Microstrip Patch Antenna Element For Broadband Applications, Robert T. Cock
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A broadband, contiguous stacked, two-layer, square microstrip patch antenna element design is described which can be used for a linear or circular polarization. Single layer microstrip patch theory for the rectangular patch radiator is presented and used as a basis for understanding the two-layer patch configuration. The theory is modified to predict radiation patters and resonant frequencies of the two-layer microstrip patch antenna element. Experimental results include the radiation patterns, dominant resonant frequencies (TM10 mode), return loss (S11), and bandwidth for X band elements as a function of dielectric constants, dielectric thicknesses, and patch sizes.

A Shuttle Bus For The University Of Central Florida, Maryam Hosseini-Kargar
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The University of Central Florida, with an enrollment of approximately 16,000 students, is being faced with parking, traffic and transportation problems. The University of Central Florida (UCF) is a commuter campus, with over 90% of the students arriving by automobile. Parking spaces cost over $800/space, and funding to build new spaces is scarce. Existing lots on the perimeter of the UCF campus offer a potential advantage to park and ride services or a shuttle serve around UCF.
Research conducted for this paper evaluated the usage of a shuttle bus system around the UCF campus. The primary purpose of the shuttle …
Companding Flash Analog-To-Digital Converters, Michael P. Brig
Companding Flash Analog-To-Digital Converters, Michael P. Brig
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This report will demonstrate how a companding flash analog-to-digital converter can be used to satisfy both the dynamic range and resolution requirements of an infrared imaging system. In the past, infrared imaging systems had to rely on analog electronics to process a thermal image. This was costly and, in many ways, inefficient but the only way to perform the function. Digital processing was impractical because ADC conversion speeds were slow with respect to video frequencies. Furthermore, it is impossible to gain the necessary dynamic range using linear conversion techniques without large digital wordlengths. Therefore, the principles of companding flash analog-to-digital …
Intra Region Routing, Robert Alan Eustace
Intra Region Routing, Robert Alan Eustace
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The custom integrated circuit routing problem normally requires partitioning into rectangular routing regions. Natural partitions usually result in regions that form both "channels" and "areas". This dissertation introduces several new channel and area routing algorithms and measures their performance.
A formal description of the channel routing problem is presented and a relationship is established between the selection of intervals for each track and the number of tracks in the completed channel. This relationship is used as an analysis tool that leads to the development of two new and highly effective channel routing algorithms: the Revised and LCP algorithms. The performance …
