Boy Student/Girl Student: Exploring Early Childhood Teacher Perceptions Of Gender And Their Influence On Children's Learning, Elizabeth Oliver Dec 2013

Boy Student/Girl Student: Exploring Early Childhood Teacher Perceptions Of Gender And Their Influence On Children's Learning, Elizabeth Oliver

HIM 1990-2015

Brain development in children has always been fascinating to me; it was the reason I chose to major in Early Childhood Education. I have often wondered how the expectations and behavior of parents and teachers affect young children academically. Specifically, how do early gender messages from adults, peers, and the popular media have a powerful impact on the development of young brains? The professional responsibility of all educators is to help every child reach their full potential. This thesis explored the potential impact early childhood educators have in developing and reinforcing stereotypes that can affect children academically by surveying teachers …

Characterization Of Polyetherimide Under Static, Dynamic, And Multiple Impact Conditions, Bryan Zuanetti Dec 2013

Characterization Of Polyetherimide Under Static, Dynamic, And Multiple Impact Conditions, Bryan Zuanetti

HIM 1990-2015

The application of polymers in robust engineering designs is on the rise due to their excellent mechanical properties such as high fracture toughness, specific strength, durability, as well as, thermal and chemical resistances. Implementation of some advanced polymeric solids is limited due to the lack of available mechanical properties. In order for these materials to endure strenuous engineering designs it is vital to investigate their response in multiple loading rates and conditions. In this thesis, the mechanical response of polyethermide (PEI) is characterized under quasi-static, high strain rate, and multiple impact conditions. Standard tension, torsion, and compression experiments are performed …

Generation And The Google Effect: Transactive Memory System Preference Across Age, Jessica Siler Aug 2013

Generation And The Google Effect: Transactive Memory System Preference Across Age, Jessica Siler

HIM 1990-2015

A transactive memory system (TMS) is a means by which people may store information externally; in such a system the task of remembering is offloaded by remembering where information is located, rather than remembering the information itself. As Sparrow et al. (2011) suggest in the article Google Effects on Memory: Cognitive Consequences of Having Information at Our Fingertips, people are beginning to use the internet and computers as a TMS, and this use is changing the way people encounter and treat information. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate whether preference for TMS type (either with books or with …

High School Dropout: A Study Of Parental Perceptions Of Dropout And Prevention Strategies, Daniel Garcia Aug 2013

High School Dropout: A Study Of Parental Perceptions Of Dropout And Prevention Strategies, Daniel Garcia

HIM 1990-2015

Dropping out from high school is becoming a growing trend that necessitates new and more powerful intervention strategies to be utilized. Large numbers of adolescents between the ages of 16- 24 have been shown to receive no high school diploma or equivalent. The effects of dropping out are far reaching, with many students who dropout facing depression and alienation that may lead to other negative consequences. This research focuses on the need for preventative action against the issue of dropout. One hypothesis to be tested is whether or not current dropout prevention techniques can be applied to students who are …

A vast array of high value parts in land- and air-based turbomachinery are subjected to non-isothermal cycling in the presence of mechanical loading. Crack initiation, growth and eventual failure more significantly reduce life in these components compared to isothermal conditions. More accurate simulation of the stress and strain evolution at critical locations of components, as well as test specimens, can lead to a more accurate prediction of remaining life to a structural integrity specialists. The focus of this thesis is to characterize the effects of thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) on generic turbomachinery alloy. An expression that can be used to estimate …

Microscopic Surface Textures Created By Interfacial Flow Instabilities, Jing Gu Aug 2013

Microscopic Surface Textures Created By Interfacial Flow Instabilities, Jing Gu

HIM 1990-2015

In nature, microscopic surface textures impact useful function, such as the drag reduction of shark skin (Dean & Bhushan, 2010) and superhydrophobicity of the lotus leaf(Pan, Kota, Mabry, & Tuteja, 2013). In this study, we explore these phenomena by re-creating microscopic surface textures via the method of interfacial flow instability in drying polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) acetone solutions. In general, PVDF films can be made using either spin coating or electrospray deposition with various weight concentrations in acetone. In order to study the morphology of the porous structure of PVDF films, wet deposition samples were fabricated by spin coating or near-field …

The Ambivalence Of Science Fiction: Science Fiction, Neo-Imperialism, And The Ideology Of Modernity As Progress, Graham Hall Aug 2013

The Ambivalence Of Science Fiction: Science Fiction, Neo-Imperialism, And The Ideology Of Modernity As Progress, Graham Hall

HIM 1990-2015

This thesis sets out to examine the relationship between science fiction and its conditions of production, specifically interrogating the genre's articulations of the ideology of modernity as progress. Sf has been characterized variously as a characteristically useful critical engagement with the ideologies of its context and as wholly ideological at the level of form, relying on the authority of a scientific episteme in its "cognitive estrangements," while not obligated to operate within the boundaries of this episteme. As such, the genre is unparalleled in its capacity to articulate ideologies under the guise of a putatively neutral science and reason. However, …

Real-Time Chromakey Matting Using Image Statistics, Charles Hughes, Nicholas Beato, Mark Colbert, Kazumasa Yamazawa, Yunjun Zhang Jul 2013

Real-Time Chromakey Matting Using Image Statistics, Charles Hughes, Nicholas Beato, Mark Colbert, Kazumasa Yamazawa, Yunjun Zhang

UCF Patents

Given a video signal, we generate an alpha matte based on the chromakey information. The computation is done in interactive-time using pixel shaders. To accomplish this, we use Principle Components Analysis to generate a linear transformation matrix where the resulting color triplets Euclidean distance is directly related to the probability that the color exists in the chromakey spectrum. The result of this process is a trimap of the video signals opacity. To solve the alpha matte from the trimap, we minimize an energy function constrained by the trimap with gradient descent. This energy function is based on the least-squared error …

Effective Strategies And Resources For Integrating Quality Children's Literature In Intermediate Social Studies Instruction, Priscilla Locke May 2013

Effective Strategies And Resources For Integrating Quality Children's Literature In Intermediate Social Studies Instruction, Priscilla Locke

HIM 1990-2015

For many educators in intermediate grades, the challenge is to find ways to introduce material in an engaging and meaningful way prior to students reading the textbook. Rather than having students read solely from a textbook, some educators have begun incorporating literature in the classroom in order to introduce material, to help students connect to prior knowledge. As time has passed social studies curriculum has been Teachers have an important role and responsibility to connect students to the curriculum that they are required to learn. One of the best ways to do this is by capturing their interests and tapping …

On Well-Quasi-Orderings, Forrest Thurman May 2013

On Well-Quasi-Orderings, Forrest Thurman

HIM 1990-2015

A quasi-order is a relation on a set which is both reflexive and transitive, while a well-quasi-order has the additional property that there exist no infinite strictly descending chains nor infinite antichains. Well-quasi-orderings have many interesting applications to a variety of areas which includes the strength of certain logical systems, the termination of algorithms, and the classification of sets of graphs in terms of excluded minors. My thesis explores how well-quasi-orderings are related to these topics through examples of four known well-quasi-orderings which are given by Dickson's Lemma, Higmans's Lemma, Kruskal's Tree Theorem, and the Robertson-Seymour Theorem. The well-quasi-ordering conjecture …

I Am A Critical Thinker: Exploring The Relationship Between Self-Concept And Critical Thinking Ability, Melissa Antler May 2013

I Am A Critical Thinker: Exploring The Relationship Between Self-Concept And Critical Thinking Ability, Melissa Antler

HIM 1990-2015

Critical thinking is an academically coveted skill important to all areas of education (Halpern, 1998). The ability to think critically requires an individual to question and possibly reject accepted ideals and authorities. A strong self-concept may play an important role in this process. The present study hypothesized a positive relationship between total self-concept and critical thinking ability. An additional purpose of this study was to explore whether self-concept accounted for more of the variance in critical thinking than other correlates of the ability, such as metacognition (Halpern, 1998; Magno, 2010) and openness to experience (Clifford, Boufal, & Kurtz, 2004). The …

Modification To Einstein's Field Equations Imposed By String Theory And Consequences For The Classical Tests Of General Relativity, Christopher Frye May 2013

Modification To Einstein's Field Equations Imposed By String Theory And Consequences For The Classical Tests Of General Relativity, Christopher Frye

HIM 1990-2015

String theory imposes slight modifications to Einstein's equations of general relativity (GR). In (4), the authors claim that the gravitational field equations in empty space, which in GR are just R [subscript greek letters mu nu ] = 0, should hold one extra term which is first order in the string constant [alpha'] and proportional to the Riemann curvature tensor squared. They do admit, however, that this simple modification is just schematic. In (1) the authors use modified equations which are coupled to the dilation field. We show that equations given in (4) do not admit an isotropic solution; justification …

Modeling Loan Losses A Macroeconomic Approach, Jeremy Hughes May 2013

Modeling Loan Losses A Macroeconomic Approach, Jeremy Hughes

HIM 1990-2015

A sound banking system is essential to a well-functioning economy. With the financial crisis beginning in 2007, a renewed interest in the safety of financial institutions has dominated both the political and financial landscape. Mounting loan losses in real estate lending led to the failing of over 460 banks from 2008 to 2012. This crisis is not unique; in fact, the Savings & Loan Crisis of the 1980's to early 1990's led to the closure of 700 savings institutions. Both instances created a panic in financial markets and heavy losses to deposit insurance funds. These losses are ultimately borne by …

Exploring The School Counselor's Role In Response To Intervention (Rti) Efforts For Struggling Readers In Elementary Grades, Rachel Merz

HIM 1990-2015

Student success is important for student learning, for parents, and for schools; however, in the last decade standardized test data has shed much light on the need for improved student performance across grade levels. Research findings identify that there are millions of struggling readers in US schools. Using assessment data, schools are implementing various types of intervention systems in an effort to meet all students' needs. Response to Intervention (RtI) is a method of intervention that provides systematic assistance to students who have learning difficulties and need additional support beyond regular classroom instruction. Results showed that RtI related activities (i.e., …

Axis Of Identities: How Socially Constructed Perceptions Affect The Foreign Policy Of Nations, Roman Torres May 2013

Axis Of Identities: How Socially Constructed Perceptions Affect The Foreign Policy Of Nations, Roman Torres

HIM 1990-2015

Contrary to the assumptions of realist theory, this thesis suggests that reality is subjected to social constructions. The national discourse of one country constitutes the context from which societies will generate perceptions and ideas about another society. It is from these socially constructed ideas that states' interests are formed. States interests are what constitute the foreign policy of a country. Given that the United States is the world's hegemon, understanding the process by which countries' interests take shape and evolve will give the United States social awareness and strategic advantage to lead the world's current speedy integration with less volatile …
