The purpose of this study was to measure the impact of caregiver-student collaborative learning classes on an urban community. The study examined whether the self-efficacy of the caregivers increased with helping their children with school work due to the caregiver-student classes. The study also examined whether providing access to a resource not normally provided within this particular community led to increased self-efficacy within caregivers. The research questions that guided the study were as follows: How do collaborative caregiver-student classes that focus on collaborative strategies impact the self-efficacy of the caregivers in helping their children with school work? How does increasing …
A Systematic Review Of Research On Successful African American Students In Mathematics: Implications For Seminole High School, Trung Vong
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to synthesize the counter-narratives of mathematically successful African American students. The gap in educational achievement between African American and White students is well documented in the United States, especially in mathematics education. Although Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test scores have increased for both groups at Seminole High School, the gap has remained over 30% for nearly a decade. Most research on this topic has focused on the reasons why African American students fail to achieve. Various individual, social, and organizational factors have been suggested. However, a growing body of research has highlighted the stories of …
Electronic Transport And Correlations In Single Magnetic Molecule Devices, Javier Romero
Electronic Transport And Correlations In Single Magnetic Molecule Devices, Javier Romero
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, we study the most important microscopic aspects that grant molecules such as Single Molecule Magnets (SMMs) their preferential spin direction. We do so by proposing and solving a model that includes correlations between electrons occupying atomic orbitals. In addition, we study the relation between the non-equilibrium electronic transport signatures in a SMM model weakly coupled to a three-terminal single electron transistor device, and the interference features of the SMM model in the presence of a magnetic field. Finally, we investigate the equilibrium transport features in a giant-spin model of a SMM in the Kondo regime. We study …

Creation And Application Of Routines For Determining Physical Properties Of Asteroids And Exoplanets From Low Signal-To-Noise Data Sets, Nathaniel Lust
Creation And Application Of Routines For Determining Physical Properties Of Asteroids And Exoplanets From Low Signal-To-Noise Data Sets, Nathaniel Lust
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Astronomy is a data heavy field driven by observations of remote sources reflecting or emitting light. These signals are transient in nature, which makes it very important to fully utilize every observation. This however is often difficult due to the faintness of these observations, often are only slightly above the level of observational noise. We present new or adapted methodologies for dealing with these low signal-to-noise scenarios, along with practical examples including determining exoplanet physical properties, periodicities in asteroids, and the rotational and orbital properties of the multiple asteroid system 2577 Litva.
Broad Bandwidth, All-Fiber, Thulium-Doped Photonic Crystal Fiber Amplifier For Potential Use In Scaling Ultrashort Pulse Peak Powers, Alex Sincore
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Fiber based ultrashort pulse laser sources are desirable for many applications; however generating high peak powers in fiber lasers is primarily limited by the onset of nonlinear effects such as self-phase modulation, stimulated Raman scattering, and self-focusing. Increasing the fiber core diameter mitigates the onset of these nonlinear effects, but also allows unwanted higher-order transverse spatial modes to propagate. Both large core diameters and single-mode propagation can be simultaneously attained using photonic crystal fibers. Thulium-doped fiber lasers are attractive for high peak power ultrashort pulse systems. They offer a broad gain bandwidth, capable of amplifying sub-100 femtosecond pulses. The longer …

This dissertation describes the development of novel techniques for characterization of nonlinear properties of materials. The dissertation is divided into two parts, a background and theory section and a technique development section. In the background and theory section we explain the origins of the nonlinear optical response of materials across many different spatial and temporal scales. The mechanisms that we are most interested in are the electronic nuclear and reorientational responses, which occur on the range of sub-femtosecond to several picoseconds. The electronic mechanism is due to the electrons of a material experiencing a non-parabolic potential well due a strong …
Driving Performance Adaptation Through Practice With And Without Distracters In A Simulated Environment, Marc Gentzler
Driving Performance Adaptation Through Practice With And Without Distracters In A Simulated Environment, Marc Gentzler
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A preponderance of research points to the detrimental effects of distraction on driving performance. An interesting question is whether practice can improve distracted driving. The results from the few longitudinal simulator-based research studies conducted on driving distraction have been inconclusive. This may be because practice effects could be confounded with participants adapting to driving in the simulator. Therefore, participants in the current studies were trained until performance reached a steady state prior to introducing the distracters. In this dissertation, two single-subject design studies were used to investigate the effects of training on distracted driving. The first study included two participants …

The Influence Of A Career Planning Stem Explorations Course On Vocational Maturity, Career Decidedness And Career Thoughts For Undergraduate Students, Diandra Prescod
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
According to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), innovation that accompanies careers in science, technology engineering, and math (STEM) create a driving force in the economy and the creation of jobs, yet many positions remain open due to the lack of qualified individuals to fill them (NAS, 2011). Continuing research and innovation proves to be important, yet not enough students graduate with STEM degrees and enter into STEM careers. Career planning courses for undergraduate students increase student confidence about their abilities to make career decisions (Grier-Reed & Skaar, 2010: Scott & Ciani 2008). Vocational maturity and career decision making skills …

Multimaterial Fibers And Tapers A Platform For Nonlinear Photonics And Nanotechnology, Soroush Shabahang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The development of optical sources and components suitable for the mid-infrared is crucial for applications in this spectral range to reach the maturity level of their counterparts in the visible and near-infrared spectral regimes. The recent commercialization of quantum cascade lasers is leading to further interest in this spectral range. Wideband mid-infrared coherent sources, such as supercontinuum generation, have yet to be fully developed. A mid-infrared supercontinuum source would allow for unique applications in spectroscopy and sensing. Over the last decade, it has been shown that high-index confinement in highly nonlinear fibers pumped with high-peak-power pulses is an excellent approach …
A Time-Course Analysis Of Behavioral Plasticity And Differential Gene Expression Patterns In Response To Density In Schistocerca Americana (Orthoptera: Acrididae), Steven Gotham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Phenotypic plasticity is the ability of the genotype to express alternative phenotypes in response to different environmental conditions and this is considered to be an adaptation in which a species can survive and persist in a rapidly changing environment. Some grasshoppers and locusts are capable of expressing an extreme form of density-dependent phenotypic plasticity, known as locust phase polyphenism. At low population density, the individuals typically have a cryptic coloration as nymphs, are less active, and only seek out conspecifics for reproductive purposes. At high density, however, they develop a drastically different phenotype in which they have a conspicuous coloration, …
Action Potentials As Indicators Of Metabolic Perturbations For Temporal Proteomic Analysis, Aditya Reddy Kolli
Action Potentials As Indicators Of Metabolic Perturbations For Temporal Proteomic Analysis, Aditya Reddy Kolli
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The single largest cause of compound attrition during drug development is due to inadequate tools capable of predicting and identifying protein interactions. Several tools have been developed to explore how a compound interferes with specific pathways. However, these tools lack the potential to chronically monitor the time dependent temporal changes in complex biochemical networks, thus limiting our ability to identify possible secondary signaling pathways that could lead to potential toxicity. To overcome this, we have developed an in silico neuronal-metabolic model by coupling the membrane electrical activity to intracellular biochemical pathways that would enable us to perform non-invasive temporal proteomics. …
Multifunctional And Responsive Polyelectrolyte Nanostructures, Astha Malhotra
Multifunctional And Responsive Polyelectrolyte Nanostructures, Astha Malhotra
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
A polyelectrolyte complex is formed by mixing two oppositely charged polyelectrolytes in a solution. The electrostatic interactions between partially charged polymeric chains lead to the formation of a stable complex while avoiding the use of covalent cross linkers. Since complex formation can improve the stability of polyelectrolyte and metal ions in polyelectrolyte can provide various functionalities, PECs incorporated with metal ions are promising candidates for manufacturing stable and multifunctional structures. While the coordination of metal ions and polyelectrolytes has been extensively investigated in solutions and multilayer films, to our knowledge, no research has been performed to study the effect of …
To Better Understand The Theater Of The Middle Ages By An In-Depth Study Of The Old Testament Plays Of The York Cycle Of Corpus Christi Plays, Carole Casey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Scholastic texts on theater move from the Greeks and Romans to the theater of Shakespeare's time with little or no acknowledgment of the Middle Ages. From the late thirteenth century until the reformation an active community theater known as the mystery plays existed throughout much of Europe. The York Corpus Christi Cycle was part of that movement. The play was produced by the guilds of York under the supervision of the chamber of commerce with the Church monitoring the theology and morals. Performed yearly on the Feast Day of Corpus Christi, the subject of the play was the salvation of …
The Effect Of Electron-Hole Pairs In Semiconductor And Topological Insulator Nanostructures On Plasmon Resonances And Photon Polarizations., Hari Paudel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The generation of electron-hole pairs in materials has great importance. In direct bandgap semiconductor materials, the mechanism of radiative recombination of electron-hole pairs leads to the emission of photons, which is the basis of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). The excitation of electron-hole pairs by absorption of photons is the active process in photodiodes, solar cells, and other semiconductor photodetector devices. In optoelectronic devices such as optical switches which are based on transmission and reflection of the photons, electron-hole pairs excitation is a key for the device performance. Diodes and transistors are also great discoveries in electronics which rely on the …
Electrical Conductivity Imaging Via Boundary Value Problems For The 1-Laplacian, Johann Veras
Electrical Conductivity Imaging Via Boundary Value Problems For The 1-Laplacian, Johann Veras
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We study an inverse problem which seeks to image the internal conductivity map of a body by one measurement of boundary and interior data. In our study the interior data is the magnitude of the current density induced by electrodes. Access to interior measurements has been made possible since the work of M. Joy et al. in early 1990s and couples two physical principles: electromagnetics and magnetic resonance. In 2007 Nachman et al. has shown that it is possible to recover the conductivity from the magnitude of one current density field inside. The method now known as Current Density Impedance …

Slaying The Assessment Dragon: One Department’S Efforts To Tame The Beast And Survive As The Knights In Shining Armor, Mary M. Eicholtz, Jay Baglia
Journal of the Association for Communication Administration
Assessment looms large across our campuses as an instrument of evaluation, accountability, and development. Communication departments are called on to establish assessment programs for their graduate and undergraduate curriculum programs. Additionally, departments that offer courses in the general education programs are often the first departments approached for assessment of those courses as part of general education assessment. This case study describes the successes and challenges of a communication department’s experience in establishing and maintaining a general education assessment program of their Basic Oral Communication course. Preliminary data and analysis is included in reporting the outcome of these efforts.
An Algorithm For Motion Estimation From The Tomographic Data, Alexander Katsevich, Michael Silver, Alexander Zamyatin
An Algorithm For Motion Estimation From The Tomographic Data, Alexander Katsevich, Michael Silver, Alexander Zamyatin
UCF Patents
In this paper we study local tomography (LT) in the motion contaminated case. It is shown that microlocally, away from some critical directions, LT is equivalent to a pseudo-differential operator of order one. LT also produces non-local artifacts that are of the same strength as useful singularities. If motion is not accurately known, singularities inside the object f being scanned spread in different directions. A single edge can become a double edge. In such a case the image of f looks cluttered. Based on this observation we propose an algorithm for motion estimation. We propose an empiric measure of image …

Imagine a world where someone’s personal information is constantly compromised, where federal government entities AKA Big Brother always knows what anyone is Googling, who an individual is texting, and their emoticons on Twitter. Government entities have been doing this for years; they never cared if they were breaking the law or their moral compass of human dignity. Every day the Federal government blatantly siphons data with programs from the original ECHELON to the new series like PRISM and Xkeyscore so they can keep their tabs on issues that are none of their business; namely, the personal lives of millions. Our …

Theoretical Tailoring Of Perforated Thin Silver Films For Surface Plasmon Resonance Affinity, Renan Gongora
HIM 1990-2015
Metallic films, in conjunction with biochemical-targeted probes, are expected to provide early diagnosis, targeted therapy and non-invasive monitoring for epidemiology applications [1-4]. The resonance wavelength peaks, both plasmonic and Wood-Rayleigh Anomalies (WRAs), in the scattering spectra are affected by the metallic architecture. As of today, much research has been devoted to extinction efficiency in the plasmonic region. However, Wood Rayleigh Anomalies (WRAs) typically occur at wavelengths associated with the periodic distance of the structures. A significant number of papers have already focused on the plasmonic region of the visible spectrum, but a less explored area of research was presented here; …
