Building A Pathway To Engineering For Our Daughters – Brick By Brick, Ali P. Gordon
Building A Pathway To Engineering For Our Daughters – Brick By Brick, Ali P. Gordon
UCF Forum
As a father of young elementary and middle school-aged kids, I’m also curious to know exactly how my undergrad students came to be interested in mechanical engineering. An exchange with a UCF student might go like this: “You did a great job on the exam. Congrats! By the way, how did you get interested in mechanical engineering, anyway?” I mentally log the answers for my kids’ future benefit.

Playing For First Place: An Analysis Of Online Reviews And Their Impact On Local Market Rankings, Dipendra Singh, Edwin N. Torres, April Robertson-Ring
Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Whereas past research studied the impact of online reviews on a hotel’s image, the present study analyzes the impact of various measures of customer engagement on the local market ranking of a hotel. For these purposes, the researchers collected data on a sample of hotels including the number of reviews, absolute rating (i.e. 1-5 stars), and market ranking (i.e. 1st, 2nd, 3rd place) on TripAdvisor. The authors tested the relationships between number of reviews, market ranking, overall rating and number of booking transactions. Results revealed that the absolute rating of the hotel was a significant factor in determining its market …

When we die, the knowledge stored in our brains disappears. But through education, each generation of people can pass their knowledge to the next via spoken language, books and other media, and this knowledge can accumulate through the ages.
The Shadow Rate And Its Relationship With Lender And Borrower Variables, Andrei Irimia
The Shadow Rate And Its Relationship With Lender And Borrower Variables, Andrei Irimia
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Since the federal funds rate reached the zero lower bound in late 2008, economists have been struggling to adapt their models to a long-term zero rate. Wu and Xia built upon previous research by Fischer Black to create a model for how the federal funds rate behaves during the ZLB period. In their model, the rate actually dips into the negative digits, which the actual federal funds rate does not do. The logic behind the model is that a negative shadow rate is a much better indicator of true economic conditions while the current zero rate merely masks the actual …
The Effects Of Cerebrovascular Aging On Sleep Quality In A Sample Of Aging Adults, Chelsea Tia Mapp
The Effects Of Cerebrovascular Aging On Sleep Quality In A Sample Of Aging Adults, Chelsea Tia Mapp
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Cerebrovascular burden (CVB) is a significant factor among the aging population. Age-related cognitive decline is an important social and economic issue, and understanding the mechanisms has clinical implications, both in selecting potential therapies and in choosing specific modifiers for their evaluation. In summary, past work suggests that high CVB is one source of variance in neurovascular functioning among older adults. High CVB and associated brain-changes have been identified as causes of age-related changes and it may be that high CVB is a correlate of age-related changes in sleep quality. The primary hypothesis to be tested is that cerebrovascular burden measured …

Novel Photodynamic Cancer Therapy Agent And Biochemical Phosphate Sensor Based On Nanomaterials, Alaa Fadhel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Biochemical research and clinical studies have revolutionized the field of medicine in both diagnosis and therapy. Researchers in the field of biochemistry and biotechnology are using nanomaterials in different applications to develop devices and materials that offer benefits to both patients and the health care industry. These include biochemical sensors, enzyme encapsulation, biomarkers, and drug delivery improvements for the treatment of cancer. This dissertation focuses on investigating two biochemical aspects using nanomaterials; namely therapy and clinical diagnosis. For therapy purposes, Silica nanoparticles were used as drug delivery system to develop a new photodynamic cancer therapy agent photo-acid generator (PAG) that …
An Improved Tight-Binding Model For Phosphorene, Kursti Delello
An Improved Tight-Binding Model For Phosphorene, Kursti Delello
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The intent of this thesis is to improve upon previously proposed tight-binding models for one dimensional black phosphorus, or phosphorene. Previous models offer only a qualitative analysis of the band structure of phosphorene, and fail to fully realize critical elements in the electronic band structure necessary for transport calculations. In this work we propose an improved tight-binding model for phosphorene by including up to eight nearest-neighbor interactions. The efficacy of the model is verified by comparison with DFT-HSE06 calculations, and the anisotropy of the effective masses in the armchair and zigzag directions is considered.
A Simulation-Based Evaluation Of Efficiency Strategies For A Primary Care Clinic With Unscheduled Visits, Afrifah Bobbie
A Simulation-Based Evaluation Of Efficiency Strategies For A Primary Care Clinic With Unscheduled Visits, Afrifah Bobbie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the health care industry, there are strategies to remove inefficiencies from the health delivery process called efficiency strategies. This dissertation proposed a simulation model to evaluate the impact of the efficiency strategies on a primary care clinic with unscheduled "walk-in" patient visits. The simulation model captures the complex characteristics of the Orlando Veteran's Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) primary care clinic. This clinic system includes different types of patients, patient paths, and multiple resources that serve them. Added to the problem complexity is the presence of patient no-shows characteristics and unscheduled patient arrivals, a problem which has been until recently, …
A Mathematical Model For Feral Cat Ecology With Application To Disease., Jeff Sharpe
A Mathematical Model For Feral Cat Ecology With Application To Disease., Jeff Sharpe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We formulate and analyze a mathematical model for feral cats living in an isolated colony. The model contains compartments for kittens, adult females and adult males. Kittens are born at a rate proportional to the population of adult females and mature at equal rates into adult females and adult males. Adults compete with each other in a manner analogous to Lotka-Volterra competition. This competition comes in four forms, classified by gender. Native house cats, and their effects are also considered, including additional competition and abandonment into the feral population. Control measures are also modeled in the form of per-capita removal …
A Systems Approach To Assessing, Interpreting And Applying Human Error Mishap Data To Mitigate Risk Of Future Incidents In A Space Exploration Ground Processing Operations Environment, Tiffaney Alexander
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Research results have shown that more than half of aviation, aerospace and aeronautics mishaps/incidents are attributed to human error. Although many existing incident report systems have been beneficial for identifying engineering failures, most of them are not designed around a theoretical framework of human error, thus failing to address core issues and causes of the mishaps. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a human error assessment framework to identify these causes. This research focused on identifying causes of human error and leading contributors to historical Launch Vehicle Ground Processing Operations mishaps based on past mishaps, near mishaps, and close calls. …
Structure-Preserving Finite Difference Methods For Linearly Damped Differential Equations, Ashish Bhatt
Structure-Preserving Finite Difference Methods For Linearly Damped Differential Equations, Ashish Bhatt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Differential equations (DEs) model a variety of physical phenomena in science and engineering. Many physical phenomena involve conservative or dissipative forces, which manifest themselves as qualitative properties of DEs that govern these phenomena. Since only a few and simplistic models are known to have exact solutions, approximate solution techniques, such as numerical integration, are used to reveal important insights about solution behavior and properties of these models. Numerical integrators generally result in undesirable quantitative and qualitative errors . Standard numerical integrators aim to reduce quantitative errors, whereas geometric (numerical) integrators aim to reduce or eliminate qualitative errors, as well, in …
Electrostatic Control Over Temperature-Dependent Tunneling Across Single-Molecule Junctions, Alvar Rodriguez Garrigues
Electrostatic Control Over Temperature-Dependent Tunneling Across Single-Molecule Junctions, Alvar Rodriguez Garrigues
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The aim of the present dissertation is to improve the understanding and methodology of temperature-dependent tunnel conduction through individual molecules by single-electron transport spectroscopy. New advances in electrochemistry present individual molecular diodes as a realistic option for the implementation on molecular circuits thanks to their high current rectification ratios. Therefore, a major requisite in this field is to understand and control the conduction behaviors for a large variety of conditions. This work focuses on the electric conduction through ferrocene-based molecules as a function of temperatures within a wide range of bias and gate voltages by means of three-terminal electromigrated-broken single-electron …
Energy-Aware Reconfigurable Logic Device Using Spin-Based Storage And Carbon Nanotube Switching, Mohan Krishna Gopi Krishna
Energy-Aware Reconfigurable Logic Device Using Spin-Based Storage And Carbon Nanotube Switching, Mohan Krishna Gopi Krishna
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Scaling of semiconductors to the 14-nanometer range and below nanometer range introduces serious design challenges that include high static power in memories and high leakage power, hindering further integration of CMOS devices. Thus, emerging devices are under intense analysis to overcome these drawbacks caused by transistor size scaling. Spintronics technology provides excellent features such as Non-Volatility, low read power, low read delay, higher scalability as well as easy integration with CMOS in comparison with SRAM memories. In addition, Carbon-Nanotube Field-Effect Transistors (CNFETs) provide superior electrical conductivity, low delay and low power consumption in comparison with conventional CMOS technology. Thus in …
Coherent Beam Combining Of Ultrashort Laser Pulses, Ahmad Azim
Coherent Beam Combining Of Ultrashort Laser Pulses, Ahmad Azim
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Ultrashort pulsed lasers have become critical to understanding light-matter interactions in new regimes such as generation of attosecond pulses, laser filamentation, and intense relativistic processes. Development of more powerful and energetic ultrafast lasers is required for advancing these fields of study. Several petawatt class systems now exist with more in development to further scale peak power and extend the frontier of ultrafast laser technology. Another relevant solution to the scaling of energy and power of ultrashort pulses is coherent beam combining (CBC). CBC is useful for not only scaling of laser parameters but also to mitigate parasitic nonlinear processes associated …
An Examination Of Individual Differences In The Context Of Performance On A Feedback V. No Feedback Vigilance Task, Jenny A. Walker
An Examination Of Individual Differences In The Context Of Performance On A Feedback V. No Feedback Vigilance Task, Jenny A. Walker
Honors Undergraduate Theses
When a task is boring, repetitive, and takes place over a long period of time, individuals have a propensity to experience a gradual decline in performance known as the vigilance decrement (Mackworth, 1948). This negative trend is consistent across most populations (Davies & Parasuraman, 1982), though slight variations can occur based on the characteristics of the task, as well as characteristics of the human performing it. However, despite the many differences between these tasks, most studies are similar in the sense that, more often than not, participants are provided with immediate feedback on their performance throughout most laboratory trials. Yet, …
A Comparison Of Concurrent Correctness Criteria For Shared Memory Based Data Structure, Dipanjan Bhattacharya
A Comparison Of Concurrent Correctness Criteria For Shared Memory Based Data Structure, Dipanjan Bhattacharya
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Developing concurrent algorithms requires safety and liveness to be defined in order to understand their proper behavior. Safety refers to the correctness criteria while liveness is the progress guarantee. Nowadays there are a variety of correctness conditions for concurrent objects. The way these correctness conditions differ and the various trade-offs they present with respect to performance, usability, and progress guarantees is poorly understood. This presents a daunting task for the developers and users of such concurrent algorithms who are trying to better understand the correctness of their code and the various trade-offs associated with their design choices and use. The …
