Integrity In The Communication Curriculum, Stanley F. Paulson Apr 1986

Integrity In The Communication Curriculum, Stanley F. Paulson

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This address argues that recent national reports on undergraduate education have identified fundamental weaknesses in collegiate learning, shifting emphasis from curricular inputs to measurable student outcomes. Drawing on documents from the National Institute of Education and the Association of American Colleges, the discussion highlights concerns about declining student engagement in the arts and sciences, fragmentation of general education, and the absence of coherent rationales guiding undergraduate study. These reports call for institutions to demonstrate improvement in students’ analytical abilities, communication skills, ethical reasoning, and disciplinary depth across the curriculum rather than rely on proxies such as faculty credentials or course …

Curriculum Implications Of The New Technologies, Frederick Williams Jan 1986

Curriculum Implications Of The New Technologies, Frederick Williams

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the curricular implications of emerging communication technologies, emphasizing that the central concern within the communication discipline remains the study of human use and social impacts of technological systems rather than their mechanical features. It argues that new media function primarily as extensions of existing forms, particularly as telecommunications and computing converge, enabling greater informational access, individualized communication, and distributed decision making. Rather than creating entirely new courses, the article proposes revising current communication curricula to reflect changes in media environments. Key areas for integration include the shift from mass communication to demassification through narrowcasting and text services, …

Developing An Anglo-American Communication Program, Terence Jackson Oct 1985

Developing An Anglo-American Communication Program, Terence Jackson

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay analyzes the development of an American style communication program within a British educational context. It begins by describing the structure of further and higher education in England and Wales and explains how traditions of vocational training and liberal education intersect within these systems. The discussion outlines the limited presence of communication as an academic field in Britain, noting that research in interpersonal, organizational, and mass communication exists but remains dispersed across sociology, psychology, and management. The essay then examines the challenges of creating a comprehensive communication curriculum at Warnborough College, including the scarcity of disciplinary resources, limited availability …

Megatrends In Speech Communication: Theory And Research, Stephen W. Littlejohn Aug 1985

Megatrends In Speech Communication: Theory And Research, Stephen W. Littlejohn

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article identifies broad shifts that the author terms megatrends in the development of speech communication theory and research. These megatrends refer to large scale movements that encompass smaller, related changes across the field. The essay outlines five such trends. The first is an intensified role for speech communication in bridging divisions among subfields, particularly the separation between interpersonal and mass communication that has emerged in the wider interdisciplinary study of communication. The second is a growing concern with policy implications, reflected in increased attention to social issues, applied research, and the needs of special populations. The third trend is …

Speech/Language Pathology And Audiology: A Justifiable Anomaly Within A College Of Arts And Sciences?, Fred D. Minifie Aug 1985

Speech/Language Pathology And Audiology: A Justifiable Anomaly Within A College Of Arts And Sciences?, Fred D. Minifie

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay defends the place of speech language pathology and audiology within colleges of arts and sciences by arguing that the discipline’s academic legitimacy derives from its scientific study of human communication rather than its professional training functions. The author traces tensions between broad liberal arts missions and programs perceived as narrowly vocational, noting that clinical training alone cannot justify departmental status in a university setting. Instead, the field’s essential contribution lies in advancing knowledge about normal and disordered communication and in grounding clinical practice in research based understanding. The discussion critiques programs that emphasize service delivery at the expense …

Liberal Arts Education And The Communication Arts And Sciences Discipline, Philip Emmert Aug 1985

Liberal Arts Education And The Communication Arts And Sciences Discipline, Philip Emmert

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This essay examines the relationship between the communication arts and sciences and the goals of liberal arts education, arguing that the discipline’s distinct contribution lies in its focus on the spoken word and the cognitive and behavioral changes that accompany its study. The author reviews the historical roots of American liberal arts education and notes its longstanding orientation toward preparing students to function effectively within their environments. He contends that contemporary discussions often overlook this practical heritage. Responding to earlier essays in the collection, the author argues that while theatre, mass communication, communication disorders, and speech communication each offer persuasive …

A Dual Degree Masters Program, Alvin A. Goldberg, Katharine D. Vail, Donald Novak Aug 1985

A Dual Degree Masters Program, Alvin A. Goldberg, Katharine D. Vail, Donald Novak

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article describes the development and structure of a dual degree program in speech communication and social work at the University of Denver. The program enables students to complete the MA in speech communication and the MSW concurrently by integrating coursework, practicum requirements, and research experiences from both fields. Although the two disciplines remain distinct, the authors argue that they complement one another conceptually and professionally. Communication theory offers social work students broader frameworks for understanding interpersonal, group, and organizational processes, while social work provides communication students with applied perspectives on human behavior and intervention contexts. The program reduces total …

A Policy Analysis Of The Legal Aspects Of Teaching The Handicapped Child In Physical Education, Ronald K. Hirst

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Within the last decade, handicapped students were routinely excluded from public schools (Cintron, 1983). Federal and state law now guarantee these children a free, appropriate public education. It is the task of school administrators to develop programs and policy to insure the rights of handicapped children. The goal of this research is to present a legal perspective for the teaching of handicapped children in physical education and offer specific recommendations for the successful implementation of educational programs for the handicapped. A policy analysis was performed with regards to the legal aspects of teaching the handicapped child in physical education with …

Classroom Climate For Women: The Tip Of The Iceberg, Roberta M. Hall Jan 1985

Classroom Climate For Women: The Tip Of The Iceberg, Roberta M. Hall

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article examines the classroom climate experienced by women students in higher education, focusing on subtle and overt patterns of differential treatment that can discourage women’s participation, confidence, and academic development. Drawing on student accounts and findings from The Classroom Climate Project, it identifies behaviors that single out women, such as sexist remarks, comments on appearance, gendered humor, and stereotyped examples, as well as behaviors that overlook women, including interruptions, reduced attention to women’s comments, and assumptions that men are more likely to contribute meaningfully. The article connects these classroom practices to broader patterns in advising, professional preparation, and campus …

Response To The University Of The Future, Lane Jennings Jan 1985

Response To The University Of The Future, Lane Jennings

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This response essay reflects on the future of the university from the perspective of an editor and journalist responding to essays on civic virtue, interdisciplinary communication, and computing literacy. It considers the university both as a civic community and as a looser relationship among teachers, students, and knowledge, drawing comparisons between American residential higher education, medieval universities, and emerging computer-networked instruction. The essay supports the role of universities in preparing students for democratic participation while also warning that new telecommunications technologies may reshape or weaken campus-based community if institutions do not adapt deliberately. It discusses interdisciplinary communication as a way …

Nonverbal Communication Of The Deaf, Jayne S. Lytle Oct 1984

Nonverbal Communication Of The Deaf, Jayne S. Lytle

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Nonverbal communication among deaf people is discussed in relation to American Sign Language, Deaf culture, and interactions between deaf and hearing people. The article distinguishes between nonverbal behavior and the visual linguistic features of ASL, noting that movements of the face, eyes, head, and body may function as part of the language rather than as merely expressive gestures. It reviews assumptions about deaf people’s receptive and expressive nonverbal abilities, including the idea that visual communication automatically produces greater skill in interpreting body language. The article describes characteristic behaviors related to proxemics, touch, attention-getting gestures, eye gaze, and paralanguage, with attention …

Sign Systems In Communication, Carol J. Garretson Oct 1984

Sign Systems In Communication, Carol J. Garretson

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Sign systems and sign languages are introduced through distinctions among American Sign Language, manual English systems, fingerspelling, simultaneous communication, Total Communication, Pidgin Sign English, international sign, and Cued Speech. The article clarifies terminology related to deafness, hearing impairment, and manual communication, while addressing common misconceptions that sign language is universal, nonverbal, or merely gestural. It traces the development of home signs, childrenese, school signs, and regional signing patterns, and explains that American Sign Language is an independent language with its own grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and capacity for abstraction. The article also describes efforts to represent English manually through systems such …

Defining The Field Of Communication, Erwin P. Bettinghaus Apr 1984

Defining The Field Of Communication, Erwin P. Bettinghaus

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

This article considers whether communication can or should be precisely defined as an academic field. It argues that meanings attached to communication change over time and that attempts to establish a single fixed definition are unlikely to resolve disciplinary uncertainty. Rather than limiting inquiry by excluding particular subjects, the article shifts attention to the role communication studies should play in higher education. It distinguishes between areas tied directly to professions or industries, such as journalism, advertising, theatre, and telecommunications, and areas focused on the production of knowledge about human communication, including interpersonal communication, rhetorical criticism, nonverbal behavior, and intercultural relations. …
