In recent years, the development of a large variety of mobile computing devices has led to wide scale deployment and use of wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. Wireless Sensor Networks consist of battery powered, tiny and cheap "motes", having sensing and wireless communication capabilities. Although wireless motes have limited battery power, communication and computation capabilities, the range of their application is vast. In the first part of the dissertation, we have addressed the specific application of Biomedical Sensor Networks. To solve the problem of data routing in these networks, we have proposed the Adaptive Least Temperature Routing (ALTR) algorithm …

A Comparison Of Attentional Reserve Capacity Across Three Sensory Modalities, John Brill Jan 2007

A Comparison Of Attentional Reserve Capacity Across Three Sensory Modalities, John Brill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There are two theoretical approaches to the nature of attentional resources. One proposes a single, flexible pool of cognitive resources; the other poses there are multiple resources. This study was designed to systematically examine whether there is evidence for multiple resource theory using a counting task consisting of visual, auditory, and tactile signals using two experiments. The goal of the first experiment was the validation of a multi-modal secondary loading task. Thirty-two participants performed nine variations of a multi-modal counting task incorporating three modalities and three demand levels. Performance and subjective ratings of workload were measured for each of the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Each year approximately five million people are treated in the nation's intensive care units making intensive care one of the most expensive components of the U.S. healthcare system. Of these patients, 400,000-500,000 will die annually giving the ICU the distinction of having the highest rate of mortality and complications in the hospital setting. Studies have demonstrated that one in ten patients who die each day in ICUs might survive if intensivists were present to manage clinical care and direct treatment plans (Randolph & Pronovost, 2002; Dimick, Pronovost, Heitmiller & Lipsett, 2001; Pronovost et al., 2002). The utilization of supplemental remote …

Parameter Estimation Using Sensor Fusion And Model Updating, Kevin Francoforte Jan 2007

Parameter Estimation Using Sensor Fusion And Model Updating, Kevin Francoforte

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Engineers and infrastructure owners have to manage an aging civil infrastructure in the US. Engineers have the opportunity to analyze structures using finite element models (FEM), and often base their engineering decisions on the outcome of the results. Ultimately, the success of these decisions is directly related to the accuracy of the finite element model in representing the real-life structure. Improper assumptions in the model such as member properties or connections, can lead to inaccurate results. A major source of modeling error in many finite element models of existing structures is due to improper representation of the boundary conditions. In …

Environmental Security In The Global Capitalist System: A World-Systems Approach And Study Of Panama, Mark Allen Freeman Jan 2007

Environmental Security In The Global Capitalist System: A World-Systems Approach And Study Of Panama, Mark Allen Freeman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The current global capitalist system is at odds with environmental protection and the protection of indigenous people that are directly linked to the land on which they live. In environmental security literature, many have argued that, theoretically and functionally, it is possible to link national security with environmental security. However possible this may be on paper, in practice, the global capitalist system prevents this from becoming a reality. Using a world-systems approach, this thesis will show that core countries seeking to expand capital by tapping into new markets, locating new sources of raw materials and even forming strategic military partnerships …

A Microeconomic Model Of Healthcare Systems: From Theoretical To Practical, Jesse Helligso Jan 2007

A Microeconomic Model Of Healthcare Systems: From Theoretical To Practical, Jesse Helligso

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a microeconomic market analysis of healthcare systems. Different countries use various forms for financing and providing healthcare, and the effects of market forces on the quality, access and economic efficiency of these divergent healthcare markets is the primary subject. The purpose of this thesis is to describe the forces working in the healthcare market. Free-market healthcare systems allow medical providers to become price-setters. Price-setting by medical providers creates an economically inefficient system which decreases public access to healthcare but creates a high quality system. Single-payer systems make government the price-setter which creates a system in which medical …

Sex-Biased Parasitism And The Reproductive Costs Of Parasites In A Social African Ground Squirrel, Melissa Ann Hillegass Jan 2007

Sex-Biased Parasitism And The Reproductive Costs Of Parasites In A Social African Ground Squirrel, Melissa Ann Hillegass

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vertebrate males frequently carry higher numbers of parasites than females. This bias in parasite loads could be a consequence of sexual selection. Grouping species are also assumed to be afflicted with larger numbers of parasites than solitary animals and associated costs of this parasitism could vary with group size or structure. I examined sex-biased parasitism and the influence of group size on parasite loads in Cape ground squirrels (Xerus inauris), a highly social species that occurs in the arid regions of southern Africa. Males carried three times as many ectoparasites as females, but females harbored nearly three times more endoparasites …

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Type I interferons (IFNs) inhibit viral replication and cell growth and enhance the immune response, and therefore have many clinical applications. IFN-alpha 2b ranks third in world market use for a biopharmaceutical, behind only insulin and erythropoietin. The average annual cost of IFN-alpha 2b for the treatment of hepatitis C infection is $26 000, and is therefore unavailable to the majority of patients in developing countries. Therefore, we expressed IFN-alpha 2b in tobacco chloroplasts, and transgenic lines were grown in the field after obtaining United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS) approval. Stable, site-specific integration …

Intravenous Immunoglobulin (Ivig) Protects The Brain Against Experimental Stroke By Preventing Complement-Mediated Neuronal Cell Death, Thiruma V. Arumugam, Sung-Chun Tang, Justin D. Lathia, Aiwu Cheng, Mohamed R. Mughal, Srinivasulu Chigurupati, Tim Magnus, Sic L. Chan, Dong-Gyu Jo, Xin Ouyang, David P. Fairlie, Daniel N. Granger, Alexander Vortmeyer, Milan Basta, Mark P. Mattson

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Stroke is among the three leading causes of death worldwide and the most frequent cause of permanent disability. Brain ischemia induces an inflammatory response involving activated complement fragments. Here we show that i.v. Ig (IVIG) treatment, which scavenges complement fragments, protects brain cells against the deleterious effects of experimental ischemia and reperfusion (I/R) and prevents I/R-induced mortality in mice. Animals administered IVIG either 30 min before ischemia or after 3 h of reperfusion exhibited a 50-60% reduction of brain infarct size and a 2- to 3-fold improvement of the functional outcome. Even a single low dose of IVIG given after …

The Effects Of Year-Round Irrigation On Landscape Plant Quality And Health In Ohio, Heath Caldwell, Karen Mancl, Martin F. Quigley, Malcolm Pirnie Inc.

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Deep (over 165 cm), permeable, unsaturated soil is needed to treat and dispose of wastewater through septic systems. In Ohio, only 6.4% of the state's land area is suited for septic systems for wastewater treatment. Soils with shallow depth to a limiting condition, between 30 and 60 cm, represent 49% of Ohio's land area. In these areas onsite wastewater treatment systems could be followed by irrigation on the lot to disperse the treated wastewater. Several months each year in Ohio reach subfreezing temperatures, making year-round irrigation a challenge. The objective of this research was to examine the feasibility of year-round …

Lunar Surface: Dust Dynamics And Regolith Mechanics, J. E. Colwell, S. Batiste, M. Horányi, S. Robertson, S. Sture

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

The lunar surface is characterized by a collisionally evolved regolith resulting from meteoroid bombardment. This lunar soil consists of highly angular particles in a broad, approximately power law size distribution, with impact-generated glasses. The regolith becomes densified and difficult to excavate when subjected to lunar quakes or, eventually, manned and unmanned activity on the surface. Solar radiation and the solar wind produce a plasma sheath near the lunar surface. Lunar grains acquire charge in this environment and can exhibit unusual behavior, including levitation and transport across the surface because of electric fields in the plasma sheath. The fine component of …

Elevated Soil Lead: Statistical Modeling And Apportionment Of Contributions From Lead-Based Paint And Leaded Gasoline, R. Dennis Cook, Liqiang Ni

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

While it is widely accepted that lead-based paint and leaded gasoline are primary sources of elevated concentrations of lead in residential soils, conclusions regarding their relative contributions are mixed and generally study specific. We develop a novel nonlinear regression for soil lead concentrations over time. It is argued that this methodology provides useful insights into the partitioning of the average soil lead concentration by source and time over large residential areas. The methodology is Used to investigate soil lead concentrations from the 1987 Minnesota Lead Study and the 1990 National Lead Survey. Potential litigation issues are disscussed briefly.

Accd6, A Member Of The Fas Ii Locus, Is A Functional Carboxyltransferase Subunit Of The Acyl-Coenzyme A Carboxylase In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis, Jaiyanth Daniel, Tae-Jin Oh, Chang-Muk Lee, Pappachan E. Kolattukudy

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

The Mycobacterium tuberculosis acyl-coenzyme A (CoA) carboxylases provide the building blocks for de novo fatty acid biosynthesis by fatty acid synthase I (FAS 1) and for the elongation of FAS I end products by the FAS 11 complex to produce meromycolic acids. The M. tuberculosis genome contains three biotin carboxylase subunits (AccA1 to -3) and six carboxyltransferase subunits (AccD1 to -6), with accD6 located in a genetic locus that contains members of the FAS 11 complex. We found by quantitative real-time PCR analysis that the transcripts of accA3, accD4, accD5, and accD6 are expressed at high levels during the exponential …

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Background: The mitochondrial genomes of snakes are characterized by an overall evolutionary rate that appears to be one of the most accelerated among vertebrates. They also possess other unusual features, including short tRNAs and other genes, and a duplicated control region that has been stably maintained since it originated more than 70 million years ago. Here, we provide a detailed analysis of evolutionary dynamics in snake mitochondrial genomes to better understand the basis of these extreme characteristics, and to explore the relationship between mitochondrial genome molecular evolution, genome architecture, and molecular function. We sequenced complete mitochondrial genomes from Slowinski's corn …

Emergency management is often evaluated and improved after the occurrence of a disaster, especially in the case of preparedness. This paper discusses the importance of logistics planning and operation as it relates to disaster preparedness. The selection of field logistics sites such as staging areas, prior to the occurrence of a natural or man-made disaster, is a crucial step in emergency planning and management. Selection can be aided and kept consistent by pre-identifying state and county-level guidelines for staging areas. This paper reviews state and county criteria for the pre-selection of staging areas and discusses supporting logistical operations in disaster …

Role Of Crkii In Fc Gamma Receptor-Mediated Phagocytosis, Warren L. Lee, Gabriela Cosio, Keith Ireton, Sergio Grinstein Jan 2007

Role Of Crkii In Fc Gamma Receptor-Mediated Phagocytosis, Warren L. Lee, Gabriela Cosio, Keith Ireton, Sergio Grinstein

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Phagocytosis of IgG-opsonized pathogens by Fc gamma receptors requires extensive remodeling of the actin cytoskeleton, a process regulated by the small GTPase Rac. Vav was thought to be the guanine nucleotide exchange factor responsible for the activation of Rac, but recent evidence indicates that Fc gamma receptor-mediated phagocytosis is unaffected in macrophages lacking all three isoforms of Vav. We therefore tested whether another GEF, DOCK180, participates in Fc gamma receptor-initiated phagocytosis. DOCK180 associates with the adaptor protein Crk, which mediates recruitment of the GEF to sites of tyrosine phosphorylation. CrkII and DOCK180 were found to accumulate at the phagocytic cup. …
