Intensive Land Use And Conservation Planning At The University Of Central Florida, Chelsea R. Piner Jan 2018

Intensive Land Use And Conservation Planning At The University Of Central Florida, Chelsea R. Piner

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Conservation strategies are necessary for cities to meet regional goals of sustainability, but commitments and collaborative efforts among influential stakeholders for economic and developmental growth frequently hinder conservation efforts. This study analyzes how planning documents influence conservation at the University of Central Florida (UCF). I use an inductive method of analysis to explore the stated conservation goals and commitments of UCF's Campus Master Plan. I then compare these objectives with the behaviors of the institution. This research indicates that the absence of collaborative efforts among agencies has resulted in UCF undermining its academic mission. Intensive land-use has sparked global environmental …

An Analysis Of The Ecological Theory Of Research Participation Applied To A Sample Of Young Adult Males, Lisa M. Soler, Adriana Ramirez Jan 2018

An Analysis Of The Ecological Theory Of Research Participation Applied To A Sample Of Young Adult Males, Lisa M. Soler, Adriana Ramirez

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Longitudinal research studies are consistently affected by attrition, which can undermine the validity and quality of the study results. Current practice has been to accept and compensate for participants' failure to complete the study, as opposed to making efforts to prevent such drop off prior to the study. The Ecological Theory of Research Participation (ETRP) describes factors within a study that contribute to attrition. Further, the model presents a participant-centered approach, composed of four layers, which provide strategies to incorporate into a study's design as preventative measures against attrition. This model prepares researchers to anticipate the reasons why attrition occurs …

The Influence Of Previous Traumatic Experiences On Haitian Child Refugees' Conceptualization Of Fear, Jessy Guler, Courtney Guler, Dr. Judit Szente Jan 2018

The Influence Of Previous Traumatic Experiences On Haitian Child Refugees' Conceptualization Of Fear, Jessy Guler, Courtney Guler, Dr. Judit Szente

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

This study investigates how children's experiences as Haitian refugees influence the development of atypical childhood fears. Eighteen child refugees were interviewed about their personal primary fear objects and their interpretation of fear in a series of drawing and picture observation exercises. Five of these eighteen children were Haitian refugees. Each of the refugee children had one adult representative who was interviewed about the child, the family's demographic information, and the child's previous traumatic experiences in his/her native country. The refugee children and their adult representatives' responses to the interview questions were coded and analyzed according to themes. Results suggest that …

The Role Of Parenting And Attachment In Identity Style Development, Kaylin Ratner Jan 2018

The Role Of Parenting And Attachment In Identity Style Development, Kaylin Ratner

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

The present study set investigates the role of the parent-child relationship in identity formation using a sample of 264 students collected from two high schools in the central Florida area. Maternal responsiveness fosters both the informational and normative identity style, as well as positive attachment. Such results suggest that a warm and loving maternal figure allows children to feel safe in their environment, which encourages exploration. Furthermore, positive attachment was found to significantly predict a normative identity style. Despite both responsiveness and attachment independently predicting a normative identity style, issues were raised in regards to multicollinearity of the variables utilized …

The Associations Among Maternal Resiliency, Perceptions Of Touch, And Reports Of Infant Touch, Lisa D'Agostino Jan 2018

The Associations Among Maternal Resiliency, Perceptions Of Touch, And Reports Of Infant Touch, Lisa D'Agostino

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

This research study measures how mothers perceive and use touch with their infants, and its association with maternal resiliency, a measure of coping ability. This is important because the inability to cope causes increased stress, which increases negative perceptions of life events, making it even more difficult to cope. In addition, research has yet to uncover whether resiliency is increased in mothers by the same touch and interactions that have been proven to enhance development, attachment, and resiliency in infants. This study asked participants (mothers of infants < 1 year of age) to complete demographic information and a survey composed of three questionnaires: the Mother-Infant Touch Survey, the Physical Contact Assessment, and the Resilience Scale. Although there were no statistically significant correlations among reported perceptions of touch, mother-infant touch, and maternal resiliency, some findings warrant further investigation. Hispanic mothers scored higher on the Resiliency Scale (RS-14) than Non-Hispanic mothers, and a linear trend was detected between mothers in the < 25 years of age group and higher scores on the RS- 14. These findings may influence future research on the correlations between mother-infant touch and maternal coping ability.

Influence Of Family And Victim Demographic Factors On Treatment Completion For Children Exposed To Abuse And Family Violence, Jennifer E. Gonzalez Jan 2018

Influence Of Family And Victim Demographic Factors On Treatment Completion For Children Exposed To Abuse And Family Violence, Jennifer E. Gonzalez

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

The Children's Bureau of Administration on Children, Youth, and Families (2010) estimates that over 75 million children disclose being victims of sexual abuse, physical abuse, neglect, psychological maltreatment, and medical neglect each year. However, for agencies that provide services to victims of child sexual abuse and neglect, successfully completing treatment for clients is challenging but imperative in decreasing the likelihood of the child or adolescent developing long-term emotional, psychological, and behavioral consequences (DePanfilis, 2006). According to McPherson, Scribano, & Stevens (2012), child survivors of sexual abuse are more likely to complete treatment if their mother attends sessions and supports the …

The Proposed Etiologies Of Dissociative Identity Disorder, Jillian Blueford Jan 2018

The Proposed Etiologies Of Dissociative Identity Disorder, Jillian Blueford

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) evolves after suffering consecutive, traumatizing forms of abuse during an individual's early years. Repetitive abuse can lead an individual to develop two or more personalities, and then experience memory loss or other cognitive gaps in his or her early childhood that continue to the present day. This can have devastating effects on millions of people because a significant percentage of affected individuals do not recognize the symptoms or choose to believe that DID does not exist. By analyzing the literature currently available, this article creates a central base of popular and emerging models that clinicians use …

Associations Between Positive Health Behaviors And Psychological Distress, Marlaine Monroig Jan 2018

Associations Between Positive Health Behaviors And Psychological Distress, Marlaine Monroig

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Research examining the relationship between psychological distress and health behaviors is limited, as most such studies examine specific types of psychological distress and specific types of health behaviors. To address this limitation, the current study assessed a broad range of health behaviors (Health Behavior Checklist) and psychological symptoms (Brief Symptom Inventory) in 762 undergraduate students. Results revealed that the total BSI score showed statistically significant negative correlations with the HBC total score and three of the four HBC subscales (Wellness-Maintenance, Substance Risk, Traffic Risk ). Thus, participants reporting more overall psychological distress engaged in fewer positive health behaviors across all …

Early Adolescent Latinas And Non-Coital Sexual Behavior: Individual, Social, And Parental Variables, Ellita Williams Jan 2018

Early Adolescent Latinas And Non-Coital Sexual Behavior: Individual, Social, And Parental Variables, Ellita Williams

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STI) are increasing at a faster rate among young, low income Latinas as compared to other low income groups of girls. However, little is known about the non-coital behavior that early adolescent girls may engage in, which puts them at risk for initiation of intercourse. This study examines the frequency of a particular non-coital behavior, being touched below the waist on top of clothes, and investigates how girls who engage in this behavior differ from those who do not with respect to individual (biologic and cognitive), social (peer norms and acculturation), and parental (single …

Political Participation And E-Petitioning: An Analysis Of The Policy-Making Impact Of The Scottish Parliament's E-Petition System, Ross Cotton Jan 2018

Political Participation And E-Petitioning: An Analysis Of The Policy-Making Impact Of The Scottish Parliament's E-Petition System, Ross Cotton

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Worldwide, representative democracies have experienced declining levels of voter turnout, lower membership levels in political parties, and apathy towards their respective political systems. E-democracy, specifically e-petitioning, has been touted as a possible solution to this problem by scholars of electoral systems. In 1999, the Scottish Parliament reconvened for the first time in nearly three hundred years, and set out to innovate Scottish politics by launching the world's first online e-petition system. The Scottish Parliament's e-petition system serves as a litmus test to see whether it offers an effective medium for increasing public political participation, and whether it can be replicated …

"The Guy With The Problem": Reform Narrative In Disney's Beauty And The Beast, Faith Dickens Jan 2018

"The Guy With The Problem": Reform Narrative In Disney's Beauty And The Beast, Faith Dickens

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

When Disney's film Beauty and the Beast was first released in 1991, it was hailed by critics as a departure from the problematic portrayals of women that had plagued the company's previous efforts at converting fairy tales into animated features. Since then, feminist criticism has provided several different interpretations of the film, some of which seek to assign Beauty and the Beast to a specific literary genre. In looking at Disney's film as a literary text, critics such as June Cummins have argued that it most closely resembles a patriarchal classic romance, while others, such as Susan Swan, view it …

Direct And Indirect Influences Of Defendant Mental Illness On Jury Decision Making, Marie Sabbagh Jan 2018

Direct And Indirect Influences Of Defendant Mental Illness On Jury Decision Making, Marie Sabbagh

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

It is a common misconception that individuals with schizophrenia are significantly more dangerous and violent than individuals free of mental illness. This stigmatization may lead to harsher sentences when people with schizophrenia are involved in criminal activities and sentenced by a jury. This study presented four conditions to which participants were randomly assigned, alone or in a group of three, and were asked to sentence a defendant, either with or without schizophrenia. It was hypothesized that group deliberations would result in more lenient sentences for defendants with schizophrenia as compared to individual deliberations. Furthermore, it was predicted that both group …

Characterization Of Cytokeratin 8 In Cancer, Daniel S. Leventhal

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

A Cytokeratin 8 (K8)/Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) fusion construct was created to better understand the behavior of K8 within cancer cells. This intermediate filament (IF) protein is a member of the cytoskeletal gene family, along with actin and tubulin. IFs are normally expressed in a tissue-specific and differentiation-dependent manner, in which their role is more supportive than essential to the cell. Such roles include rigidity of cellular shape, protein trafficking, cellular locomotion, and cell-signaling platforms. K8 mutation, over-expression, and aberrant post translational modifications have been observed in various carcinoma cell lines to be the cause of several phenotypes, including apoptosis …

Ex-Votos From The Church Of São Lázaro And The Votive Healing Process, Natalia Marques Da Silva

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Votive objects or actions, which are widely referred to as ex-votos, are made in thanksgiving to deities or miraculous beings for graces received. In an ex-voto, the completion of the vow constitutes it as a votive offering. The process of promising and completing a votive acts as a coping mechanism utilized both by individuals and by their communities. This article explores the votive traditions and related coping mechanisms found in the church of São Lázaro, in Salvador, Bahia through field work conducted in 2009.

Are Florida's Children Safe? Evaluating Safety In District 7 Privatized Child Welfare Services, Antoinette Bazunu Jan 2018

Are Florida's Children Safe? Evaluating Safety In District 7 Privatized Child Welfare Services, Antoinette Bazunu

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

In 1998, the Florida state legislature mandated the privatization of child welfare services. The decision to contract child welfare services to non-profit organizations was instituted in an effort to lower costs and to increase the effectiveness and quality in service delivery. The 1998 initiative came to be known as "Community-Based Care" and was based on the idea of giving local communities incentives to be more accountable for children.

The federal government requires that the safety of all children be the paramount goal for the child welfare system. The purpose of this study was to assess whether Community-Based Care was indeed …

Multiple Complications From A Finger Fracture In A Basketball Player, Stephen Hajdas Jan 2018

Multiple Complications From A Finger Fracture In A Basketball Player, Stephen Hajdas

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Minor finger and hand problems resulting from NCAA Division-1 Basketball competition are fairly common. True injuries— those requiring removal from participation— are rare, as suggested by injury surveillance and epidemiological data. The objective of this study is to present the case of multiple complications resulting from an original finger dislocation and fracture. Improper fracture healing led to tendon imbalances, causing finger angulation. The extended period of time the finger was deformed further resulted in osteoarthritis (progressive wearing down of the cartilage and bones that comprise a joint). Severe complications stemming from the original injury occur infrequently in the general population …

Computational Analysis Of Broad Complex Zinc-Finger Transcription Factors, Barbara Mascareno-Shaw

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Studies of transcription factors have provided important contributions toward understanding the cell morphology and developmental regulation of fruit flies based on sequence analysis of amino acid substitutions. In this report we describe the construction of four protein-DNA models based on two experimentally determined X-ray crystal structures (2DRP and 1A1H) using computational simulations of Z1, Z2, Z3, and Z4 zinc-finger DNA binding proteins. Once these models were constructed, 3 mutants were generated for the Z1/Z3 proteins. We evaluated the construction of the models and mutants against the templates using molecular mechanics (MM3) calculations in an attempt to determine the effect of …

All Deliberate Delay: Desegregating The Public Schools Of Orange County, Florida, Brittany Bernstein Jan 2018

All Deliberate Delay: Desegregating The Public Schools Of Orange County, Florida, Brittany Bernstein

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Discussions of the Deep South often ignore Florida and neglect to note the complexities of race relations throughout the state's history. Central Florida particularly has been overlooked and historians have yet to establish firmly the history of mid-twentieth century race relations in the region. Since there are few existing written accounts of the civil rights movement in Central Florida, this study attempts to contribute to the scholarly discourse about race in the region by investigating the desegregation of Orange County public schools.

The bulk of this study is devoted to the 1962 case Ellis v. Board of Public Instruction of …

The Assessment Of University Students' Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors Toward Sex, Melissa Castora Jan 2018

The Assessment Of University Students' Knowledge, Attitudes, And Behaviors Toward Sex, Melissa Castora

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Previous research provides varying results in the affects of sex education. While the goal of sex education is to educate and therefore protect one's self from high-risk sexual behaviors, research provides support that knowledge and attitudes do not always comply with behavior. The purpose of this study is to test college students' knowledge about sexual topics, their attitudes toward condom use, and compare these with the assessment of students' sexual behaviors. Results from the study support the hypothesis that knowledge about sexual issues and attitudes toward condom use can not predict sexual behavior. The study indicates that students' knowledge about …

Commitment And Acceptance Of Relationship Violence, Jennifer Harrison Jan 2018

Commitment And Acceptance Of Relationship Violence, Jennifer Harrison

The Pegasus Review: UCF Undergraduate Research Journal

Dating violence is often thought of as a precursor for spousal abuse and that understanding is beneficial. However, according to Makepeace (1981), all the reasons that married individuals give for remaining in violent relationships do not apply to courtship relationships, thus inspiring the question as to why do individuals in dating relationships remain in abusive relationships. Emotional commitment has been a prominent response and has been found to play a powerful role in the individual's acceptance of violence and the outcome of the relationship (Arriaga, 2002). For this reason, it is believed that individuals in committed relationships will be more …
