Predictors Of Ptsd, Depression, And Suicide-Related Outcomes For Military Personnel And First Responders In A Three-Week Intensive Outpatient Program For Ptsd, Victoria Steigerwald
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Military personnel and first responders are distinct populations that share similarities on work, cultural, and peritraumatic factors that may impact evidence-based PTSD treatment (EBT) outcomes. Little research to date has compared their response to EBTs or identified predictors of EBT outcomes for both populations. The present study examined whether first responders' treatment outcomes were non-inferior to those of military personnel in a three-week Trauma Management Therapy (TMT)-based intensive outpatient program (IOP) and whether baseline hyperarousal symptoms were predictive of outcomes. Data were analyzed from 111 military personnel and first responders (85.6% male, mean age=43.0 years) who completed the IOP. Changes …

Killing Two Birds With One Stone: An Examination Of The Role Of Three-Dimensional Energy In The Relationship Between Health Behaviors And Job Performance., Nina Steigerwald
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The positive effects of health behaviors on job performance have been reported. Specifically, there is evidence to suggest that getting adequate quantity and quality sleep, staying physically active, and following a nutritious diet, are linked to enhanced functioning and work-related outcomes. Although some studies have examined the role of energy in relation to health behaviors and performance, research looking at energy as an underlying mechanism in the health behaviors – performance link is both scarce and fragmented. The present study examines the role of energy as a potential mediator, devoting particular attention to its emotional, mental, and physical component. Using …
Mixed-Integer Programming Methods For Modeling And Optimization Of Cascading Processes In Complex Networked Systems, Cheng-Lung Chen
Mixed-Integer Programming Methods For Modeling And Optimization Of Cascading Processes In Complex Networked Systems, Cheng-Lung Chen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Dynamics and growth of many natural and man-made systems can be represented by large-scale complex networks. Entity interactions and community interconnections within complex networks increase the level of difficulty for the investigation on structural network properties such as robustness, vulnerability and resilience. In this dissertation, we develop methodologies based on mixed-integer programming techniques to solve challenging optimization problems that model cascading processes in complex networked systems. In particular, we seek to provide decision making recommendations for problems related to different types of cascading processes in networks commonly considered in a variety of applications: interdependent infrastructure networks and social networks. In …
Non-Invasive Detection Of Elevated Intracranial Pressure Using Spontaneous Tympanic Membrane Pulsation, Rajkumar Dhar
Non-Invasive Detection Of Elevated Intracranial Pressure Using Spontaneous Tympanic Membrane Pulsation, Rajkumar Dhar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Monitoring intracranial pressure (ICP) is a standard diagnostic tool for various neurological conditions such as head injury, ruptured aneurysms, intracerebral and intracranial hemorrhage, and hydrocephalus. Currently, ICP monitoring relies on invasive pressure measurements. These include intraventricular catheter, subdural screw, epidural sensor, and lumbar puncture. Invasive methods pose the risk of infection and hemorrhage, are expensive, and require special clinical skills. A noninvasive method that is reliable, simple to use, low-cost, and provides easily interpretable results can help avoid the complications associated with the invasive methods. This study proposes a novel method for noninvasive ICP monitoring using tympanic membrane pulsation (TMp). …
A Measurement System For Detection Of Intestinal Motility In Neonates By Monitoring Slow Wave Activity, Garett Goodale
A Measurement System For Detection Of Intestinal Motility In Neonates By Monitoring Slow Wave Activity, Garett Goodale
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Similar to how electrocardiographic waves are the pace making signals of the heart, slow waves are the pace making signals of the intestines. Slow waves are electrical signals in the intestines that determine the speed at which food can move through the intestine ensuring proper digestion and uptake of nutrients. It has been shown that slow waves can be measured in adults using non-invasive, surface electrodes. However, no study has investigated the measurements of slow waves in neonates, specifically pre-term neonates. Around 7% of pre-term neonates suffer from necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) which is a condition that causes damage to the …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The purpose of this thesis is to suggest the application of Active Noise Cancellation in Air Force pilot headset and helmet not only to reduce noise-induced hearing damage, but also to enhance pilot performance and aviation safety. Despite the recent advances of sound treatment technology, the interior sounds of a military aircraft exceed the damage risk criterion of 8 hrs/day exposure. Air Force pilots are flying under the extreme condition where noise is severe and prevalent. The exposure to noise can lead to permanent hearing loss, stress and fatigue, unintelligible communication, and deterioration of speech perception and recall. With all …
Not All Influence Is Born Equal: On The Effects Of Various Types Of Behavioral Influence Relationships On Social Media, Chathurani Senevirathna
Not All Influence Is Born Equal: On The Effects Of Various Types Of Behavioral Influence Relationships On Social Media, Chathurani Senevirathna
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Typically, online social influence is analyzed using a single metric approach. However, social influence is not monolithic; different users exercise different influences in different ways, and influence is correlated with the user and content-specific attributes. One such attribute could be whether the action is an initiation of a new post, a contribution to a post, or a sharing of an existing post. Thus, this dissertation uses this platform-independent action classification and models the influence as multiple entities and examines social networks through the perspective of behavioral influence propagation. Two empirical studies are present in this dissertation. The first study presents …
A Flexible 3d Architecture For Cooling Future Generation Devices, Khan Mohammad Rabbi
A Flexible 3d Architecture For Cooling Future Generation Devices, Khan Mohammad Rabbi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Systems that consume and convert energy produce thermal energy as a byproduct. This generation of thermal energy, if not dissipated properly, contributes to the significant temperature rise of the overall system. This temperature rise can lead to reduced efficiency and system-level failure. Future technologies will continue to face such thermal challenges. In fact, next-gen devices will demand flexible thermal management architectures for high-performance operation. To tackle these challenges, innovative liquid cooling technologies and high-speed thermal diagnostic systems must be developed simultaneously. Active and passive pulsation-liquid-cooling techniques are currently an attractive thermal management solution. In an active cooling mode, the influence …
Computational Methods To Analyze Next-Generation Sequencing Data In Genomics And Metagenomics, Saidi Wang
Computational Methods To Analyze Next-Generation Sequencing Data In Genomics And Metagenomics, Saidi Wang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This thesis focuses on two important computational problems in genomics and metagenomics with the public available next-generation sequencing data. One is about gene regulation, for which we explore how distal regulatory elements may interact with the proximal regulatory elements. The other is about metagenomics, in which we study how to reconstruct bacterial strain genomes from shotgun reads. Studying gene regulation, especially distal gene regulation, is important because regulatory elements, including those in distal regulatory regions, orchestrate when, where and how much a gene is activated under every experimental condition. Their dysfunction results in various types of diseases. Moreover, the current …
A Human-Centered Approach To Improving Adolescent Online Sexual Risk Detection Algorithms, Afsaneh Razi
A Human-Centered Approach To Improving Adolescent Online Sexual Risk Detection Algorithms, Afsaneh Razi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Computational risk detection has the potential to protect especially vulnerable populations from online victimization. Conducting a comprehensive literature review on computational approaches for online sexual risk detection led to the identification that the majority of this work has focused on identifying sexual predators after-the-fact. Also, many studies rely on public datasets and third-party annotators to establish ground truth and train their algorithms, which do not accurately represent young social media users and their perspectives to prevent victimization. To address these gaps, this dissertation integrated human-centered approaches to both creating representative datasets and developing sexual risk detection machine learning models to …
An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Respiration And Seismocardiographic Signals Using Signal Processing, Machine Learning And Finite Element Analysis, Tanvir Hassan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the major causes of death worldwide. Disease management, as well as patient health, can be significantly improved by early detection of patient deterioration and proper intervention. Review of the patient's medical history and physical examination including stethoscope auscultation and electrocardiograms (ECG), echocardiography imaging, numerous blood testing, and computed tomography are common means of evaluating cardiac function. Seismocardiographic (SCG) signals are the vibrations of the chest wall due to the mechanical activity of the heart. These signals can provide useful information about heart function and could be used to diagnose cardiac problems. The variability in …

Exploration Of Warm-Up Protocols On Muscular Fatigue, Sahil Kapadia
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Muscular dystrophy is a genetically linked myopathy with no cure available. The lack of a cure makes early detection and treatment of muscular dystrophy imperative. When reviewing protocols examining muscular fatigue at submaximal isometric contractions, proper warm-up appeared to be absent and could have caused skewed results and conclusions. This study examines the effects of implementing a warm-up protocol before fatiguing trials. In this study, 10 adult subjects conducted fatiguing protocols with the right rectus at submaximal isometric contractions. The warm-up period included a light walk along with contractions at 20% and 33% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) levels. …

An Introduction To The Comparison Of Seismocardiography And Phonocardiography, Anna C. Voyatzoglou
Honors Undergraduate Theses
The intent of this thesis is to lay groundwork for examining the relationship between seismocardiography (SCG) and phonocardiography (PCG). Both are methods of measuring and describing heart mechanical function. SCG is described as chest vibrations while the heart beats, and PCG is described as acoustic chest surface signal believed to represent the heart valves opening or closing. SCG and PCG have both been used separately in clinical and research settings, but there is currently no clear comparison between the two. Therefore, there has been no way at the present to understand how one signal might inform the other. This study …

Processing-Microstructure-Property Correlation For 316l Stainless Steel Manufactured By Laser Powder Bed Fusion, Nathalia Diaz Vallejo
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The microstructural development of 316L stainless steel (316L SS) was investigated over a wide range of systematically varied laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) parameters, such as laser power, laser scan speed, hatch distance, and volumetric energy density. The use of volumetric energy density between 46 and 127 J/mm3 produced samples with relative density above 99.8% demonstrating that even in the optimized range of processing parameters the pores are unavoidable. Shifting from this range through a variation of laser scan speed produced two types of flaws, lack of fusion (LoF) and keyhole (KH) porosity leading to a decrease in the relative …

Mobile brain-body imaging (MoBI) seeks to understand human brain and body dynamics during movement and locomotor tasks such as walking with perturbations that challenge balance and lead to adaptation of walking behavior. In this dissertation, I evaluated the long-term electromyography (EMG) recording performance of dry epidermal electrodes for measuring electrical muscle activity. I also evaluated the relationships between the signals recorded from the two sides of dual-sided electroencephalography (EEG) electrodes, a recent advancement in EEG electrode design for measuring electrical brain activity. Last, I investigated adaptation of brain and body responses to small and frequent perturbations during treadmill walking while …
The Importance Of Emotional And Physical Safety In The Success And Development Of Public Spaces, Isabella Wilhelm
The Importance Of Emotional And Physical Safety In The Success And Development Of Public Spaces, Isabella Wilhelm
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Our day-to-day lives consist of formal and informal settlements in the built environment. As humans, we gravitate towards successful informal settlements (public spaces) to conduct activities such as socializing and recharging. Previous research has highlighted the importance of distinct factors in determining the success of public spaces. Still, research has failed to develop the foundation that makes all public places prosper. Through examining successful and unsuccessful public places through case studies, this research analyses the success and importance of our emotional and physical safety in public spaces through the presence or absence of sound, light, nature, boundaries, and order.

While writing, I consulted several medical articles to make my work as accurate as possible. The novel explores the way social media …
The Concept Of Grief: A Phenomenological Account With Continual Reference To Kierkegaard, Nathan Sweetman
The Concept Of Grief: A Phenomenological Account With Continual Reference To Kierkegaard, Nathan Sweetman
Honors Undergraduate Theses
My thesis argues that Søren Kierkegaard provides a perspective on grief that validates emotional experience while offering the opportunity for transcendence beyond the immediacy of grief through the work of love in recollecting one who is dead. Conventional philosophical approaches offer an incomplete picture by focusing on grief either as exclusively emotional or exclusively moral. The alternative methodology of phenomenology serves to draw out common threads from the intensely subjective, inward experience of grief. Kierkegaard’s writings on the topics of grief, sorrow, and love for the dead reflect the complexity uncovered in the phenomenological analysis. Traditional interpretations of Kierkegaard’s call …

Covid-19 And Diabetes, Radhika Desai
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Patients with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) have been found to have increased mortality and morbidity for COVID-19 and are at higher risk for severe disease once infected with COVID-19. Clearly, there exists a relationship between T2D and COVID-19 that requires more attention. In order to understand the mechanisms by which T2D contributes to more severe COVID-19 disease, attention was turned to extracellular vesicles (EVs). It was speculated that viral RNA components of the COVID-19 virus may have originated from circulating EVs that came from infected cells and use a Trojan Exosome method to infect host cells. It is necessary to …

Computational Strain Analysis In Microbiome Datasets With Application To Skin Disease, Minerva Fatimae Ventolero
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Identifying bacterial strains is important not only for human health research but also for various environmental and industrial applications. The plethora of available shotgun metagenomic datasets provide an unprecedented opportunity to discover novel bacterial strains in different environmental niches. In this thesis, we evaluated the existing novel-strain-based tools and showed that their performance is still suboptimal. Due to the difficulty in distinguishing strains of similar abundance by available tools, the SMS (strains in multiple samples) tool was developed to de novo identify bacterial strains in multiple shotgun metagenomic samples. We showed that SMS distinguishes strains of similar abundance well and …
