Photovoltaics: A Question And Answer Primer, Florida Solar Energy Center, Ingrid Melody

FSEC Energy Research Center®

Of all the solar energy technologies, photovoltaics (PV) show the greatest promise for worldwide acceptance and application. Their universal appeal lies in the fact that they generate electricity from the sun. Working photovoltaics have no moving parts, are relatively simple in design, need very little maintenance and are environmentally benign. They simply and silently produce electricity whenever they are exposed to light.

Understanding The Accident Process: Crisis Intervention For The Industrially Injured, Karen W. Sharpe Oct 1983

Understanding The Accident Process: Crisis Intervention For The Industrially Injured, Karen W. Sharpe

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the concept of the accident process plays a significant role in determining the course of treatment for the industrially injured. The accident process suggests that underlying psycho-social factors may result in the occurrence and/or maintenance of a state of disability. This disabled state provides greater needs satisfaction for the individual than his habitual behavioral repertoire. the development of the accident process suggests a state of crisis, either as a result of chronic difficulty or an acute reaction to sudden onset of illness or injury. Total rehabilitation of the individual is facilitated by a crisis intervention approach.

Retrenchment, The Department, And The Association, Kenneth E. Andersen Oct 1983

Retrenchment, The Department, And The Association, Kenneth E. Andersen

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Examining retrenchment as both an institutional process and a disciplinary concern, this article argues that communication departments must prepare for financial stress through careful planning, shared governance, and visible evidence of program quality. It distinguishes short term financial emergencies from longer term resource erosion and emphasizes that faculty should participate in decisions affecting educational policy, tenure, staffing, and program structure. The article identifies criteria often used in retrenchment reviews, including mission, quality, centrality, cost, support, demand, and duplication. It also describes how professional associations can help departments before and during review by providing disciplinary identity, evaluative standards, publications, consultants, guidelines, …

Communication Studies At The University Of Massachusetts, Jay Savereid

Association for Communication Administration Bulletin

Focused on the University of Massachusetts Amherst, this case study recounts how a long range planning process initially recommended terminating the Department of Communication Studies as an independent unit. The account traces the department’s movement from being targeted for dissolution to being removed from later lists of heavily affected majors, while noting continued uncertainty about administrative reasoning. It identifies vulnerabilities involving disciplinary misunderstanding, uneven fit within social sciences, nonpublishing faculty, resource scarcity, high undergraduate demand, and overcrowded courses. The department defended itself by arguing for intellectual coherence, teaching and research quality, student demand, and the distinctiveness of mass communication from …
