Lymphocyte Subpopulations And Other Laboratory Parameters In Patients With The Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Aids) And Related Conditions, Steven C. Shivers
Lymphocyte Subpopulations And Other Laboratory Parameters In Patients With The Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (Aids) And Related Conditions, Steven C. Shivers
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Patients with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), AIDS-Related Complex (ARC) and other high-risk individuals were evaluated for lymphocyte subsets and serum levels of IgG, IgA, IgM, complement C3 and C4, B2-rnicroglobulin, circulating immune complexes and antibodies to HIV (1). Patients with other immunologic diseases not related to AIDS and healthy individuals not at risk for AIDS were also included in the study. AIDS-related patients overall showed significant (p < .05) relative and absolute decreases helper/inducer T cells, and relative and absolute increases in suppressor/ cytotoxic T cells, resulting in dramatic decreases in helper to suppressor ratios. Relative decreases in total T cells and increases in B cells and natural killer (NK) cells were also observed in some AIDSrelated patients. Four patients not at risk for AIDS had borderline and possibly false positive HIV antibody results. Antibody levels in one of these patients gradually changed to negative after a period of a few weeks. AIDS-related patients overall were also found to have significant (p < .05) increases in serum levels of imrnunoglobulins, B2-microglobulin, and circulating immune complexes. Significant changes in serum levels of Complement C3 and C4 were not observed.

The Etiology Of Bulimia Nervosa From A Psychodynamic Socio-Cultural Perspective, Michael John Hryckowian
The Etiology Of Bulimia Nervosa From A Psychodynamic Socio-Cultural Perspective, Michael John Hryckowian
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The present research examined the etiology of bulimia nervosa from a psychodynamic perspective. The Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) and Bern Sex Role Inventory (BSRI) were used to compare bulimics and controls on a number of personality dimensions including drive for thinness, body shape dissatisfaction, interoceptive awareness (one's lack of confidence in identifying emotions or visceral sensations) and sex role identification. Using the appropriate scales on the EDI, it was hypothesized that bulimics would demonstrate a higher drive for thinness and more body dissatisfaction than controls and that they would possess poorer interoceptive awareness than controls. In agreement with the dynamic …

Personality Characteristics Of Individuals Seeking To Adopt A Companion Animal, Laura Anne Weber-Andersen
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Recent research has shown a relationship between pet ownership and certain mental health variables. In this study, the relationship between pet-seeking behavior and personality characteristics was examined. The subjects were 33 individuals seeking to adopt a pet at a local humane society and a comparison group of 16 individuals who were not interested in possessing a pet. Information was collected on a number of demographics including age, sex, marital status, education, number of minor children in the home, and prior and current pet ownership. The NEO Personality Inventory was utilized to gather personality characteristics. The hypothesis under study was that …
Sense Of Humor And Social Anxiety, James E. Fischer
Sense Of Humor And Social Anxiety, James E. Fischer
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
In utilizing humorous intervention within the psychotherapeutic milieu, researchers have indicated that there is a relationship between an individual's sense of humor and stressful emotions, specifically anxiety. However, the nature of this relationship is uncertain. While some scientists propose a direct relationship between humor and anxiety, others hypothesize an inverse relationship. This study was designed to investigate this relationship, hypothesizing that the greater an individual's sense of humor, the more likely the individual would experience anxiety in social situations. The subjects were 143 male and female undergraduates. These volunteers were administered the Situational Humor Response Questionnaire (SHRQ) and the Interaction …
Employee Assistance Programs: The State Of The Art In Central Florida, W. Thomas Oldroyd
Employee Assistance Programs: The State Of The Art In Central Florida, W. Thomas Oldroyd
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A considerable amount of literature has been written on Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), yet the research to date has not proven the effectiveness of such programs. Due to the confidential nature of EAPs, research data are difficult to find. Many elements make up an EAP. The hypothesis tested during this research is that companies incorporating what are considered by many to be the essential elements of EAPs will have more positive opinions of those elements and will save more money when compared to companies that do not have an EAP. The data were collected over a four-week period from 52 …
Some Reasons Why New Technologies Are Not Always Successful - Specifically Directed Toward Cim, Shuk Fong Lai
Some Reasons Why New Technologies Are Not Always Successful - Specifically Directed Toward Cim, Shuk Fong Lai
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
To keep the competitive edge, many companies constantly implement new technologies. However, the implementation of these new technologies are not always successful. Why?
Problems with implementation of new technologies can be either technical or managerial. This paper presents research limited to management problems and suggests the necessary changes. It also outlines the important factors in the decision-making process and the criteria for a successful implementation of a Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) system. Many experts believe that CIM is the ultimate solution to slow and reverse the decline of the U.S. global manufacturing market. However, some companies that have implemented CIM …

A Multivariate Study On The Emotions And Self-Esteem Of Pregnant Women, Patricia K. Teal
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This multivariate study investigated the effects of selected psychosocial and demographic variables on the self-esteem and emotional states of pregnant women. Previous studies done pertaining to this subject have tended to be restricted to specific social classes, racial groups, age groups or marital status. The present study expanded previous research by looking at a broader population. Pregnant women in their third trimester (~ = 201) were asked to complete a demographic questionnaire, a Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and a Multiple Affect Adjective Check List. Pearson coefficients indicated that self-esteem scores were positively correlated with positive affect and negatively correlated with anxiety, …
Pluralism In Educational Theatre, Betty Jean Jones
Pluralism In Educational Theatre, Betty Jean Jones
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article explores strategies for increasing minority participation in theatre performance training at predominantly white colleges and universities. Drawing on Stanislavski’s concept of the “circle of attention,” it argues that recruitment, retention, and casting must be approached holistically to foster diversity and inclusion. The discussion emphasizes that opportunities for minority students must extend beyond admission to meaningful casting and curricular integration, supported by institutional commitment. Broader issues such as the decline of Black Studies programs, the shortage of minority faculty, and campus racial tensions are linked to the challenge of achieving pluralism in educational theatre. Non-traditional casting, community collaboration, and …
Minority Recruitment For Performance Programs, Fred Behringer
Minority Recruitment For Performance Programs, Fred Behringer
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines the challenges and opportunities of minority recruitment and retention in higher education, with a focus on theatre programs at predominantly white institutions. It highlights national trends of declining minority enrollment and the pressures placed on colleges to meet desegregation goals, which sometimes create tension with historically Black institutions. Traditional recruitment strategies, often shaped by white middle-class assumptions, are critiqued as ineffective in reaching new pools of talent. A pilot summer theatre workshop at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is described as a model for community-based recruitment, emphasizing partnerships with Black organizations, personal outreach, and visible institutional …

Questionnaires were returned by 384 respondents of the 698 mailed for a 55% return rate.
High self-esteem scores for faculty from all types of nursing programs were found with both the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale(~= 35) and Hudson Index of Self-Esteem(~= 19). Statistically significant differences were determined between self-esteem …
Assessment Of The English Comprehension Level Test As A Predictor Of Success In Navy Recruit Training, Carla M. French
Assessment Of The English Comprehension Level Test As A Predictor Of Success In Navy Recruit Training, Carla M. French
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
As of 1980, the total population of persons of Spanish origin in the United States was 14,609,000, or 6.4%, with over 2,000,000 of them Puerto Rican (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1983). Thousands of Hispanics are coming into the U.S. every year, both legally and illegally. They are the second largest minority in the U.S., and if growth continues at the current rate, they may outnumber Blacks by the year 2020 (Davis, Haub, & Willette, 1983).

Effects Of Informed Consent On Client Behaviors And Attitudes In A Pro-Life Pregnancy Counseling Center, Kathryn Lynn Mardirosian
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Although current professional and public opinion support the right of the client to make an informed decision about entering and continuing in a psychotherapy or counseling relationship, research studying the effects of informed consent on client behaviors and attitudes in the medical, research, and mental health fields has resulted in equivocal findings. This study looked at the effects of an informed consent procedure on client behaviors and attitudes in a pro-life pregnancy counseling center where the center's primary goal is to reduce the number of abortion decisions among clients. Thirty of the center's clients (Experimental Group) were given an Informed …

The Feasibility Of Computerized Cognitive Testing As A Surrogate Measure For Assessment Center Performance, Leilani M. De Saram
The Feasibility Of Computerized Cognitive Testing As A Surrogate Measure For Assessment Center Performance, Leilani M. De Saram
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The use of microcomputerized cognitive testing of personnel has thus far been limited to military and environmental stressor applications. The investigation of such testing as a substitute for assessment center performance represents a novel application of this technology. An examination of the relationship between performance on a cognitive test battery and assessment center performance was conducted.
A battery of selected microcomputerized tests measuring cognitive constructs was administered to assessment center candidates in law enforcement occupations. Contrary to expectations, the computerized cognitive measurements did not exhibit significant correlations with assessment center performance measures. It was speculated that the two measures assessed …

Effect Of Visual Reminder On The Ttr And Mlu-W Of Oral Hearing-Impaired Students During High/Scope Recall Sessions, Joan S. Kissel
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
Language samples of sixteen oral hearing-impaired students, aged 3.8 to 10.6 years with a mean SRT average of 27dB, were taken during High/Scope recall sessions under two conditions: with visual reminder (a videotape replay of their session work-time) or without visual reminder (no videotape replay of their work-time). These language samples, taken over a three month period, were analyzed with SALT (Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts) for flexibility (using TTR) and structure (using MLU-W), and for five other SALT analyses. In each of the seven SALT analyses, improvement was shown for both groups with a trend for greater improvement shown …

The Relationship Between Computer Experience And Anxiety In Computer Versus Paper-And-Pencil Administration Of The State Portion Of The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Timothy D. Orrell
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The effect of computer experience on state anxiety was investigated for both computer and paper-and-pencil administrations. It was hypothesized that, when assessed via computer, subjects having low computer experience would show significantly higher state anxiety scores than their computer experienced counterparts. Sixty undergraduate students were administered the State portion of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory via paper-and-pencil (P-A-P) and computer (CRT) in counterbalanced design, with pretest levels of computer experience and trait anxiety being premeasured. Results indicated that there were no significant differences between the CRT, P-A-P, and trait anxiety groups. These findings reveal no significant difference between level of computer …

This study assessed the adolescent client's perceptions of the limits of confidentiality as well as their privacy demands.
Thirty adolescent subjects undergoing treatment for substance abuse were asked to respond to questionnaires consisting of 10 scenarios reflecting confidentiality issues. Subjects responded to each scenario by choosing outcomes to represent what they believed the counselor should do and what they would prefer the counselor to do. Three parallel forms of an original research questionnaire were used to represent the following treatment modalities: individual therapy, group therapy, and family therapy.
The results supported the hypotheses that minor clients have a general understanding …
