The Relationship Of Sources Of Job Stress And Role Constructs To Coping Behaviors, Valerie June Moser Jan 1988

The Relationship Of Sources Of Job Stress And Role Constructs To Coping Behaviors, Valerie June Moser

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Job Pressure and Lack of Support, two factors of job stress, were correlated with the role constructs, Role Ambiguity, Role Conflict, and Role Overload, and then entered into a multiple regression study to predict two distinct coping strategies, control and escape. The Job Stress Survey was used to obtain Job Presssure and Lack of Support scores, and the role constructs were obtained from several questionnaires. Data were obtained from 105 employees, 61.2% male, 38.8% female, from different levels of several oganizations. Bivariate correlations, carried out to determine the relationship between the job stress factors and the role constructs, showed positive …

Heavy Metal Removal By Sedimentation Of Street Sweepings In Stormwater Runoff, Mary Elizabeth Brabham Jan 1988

Heavy Metal Removal By Sedimentation Of Street Sweepings In Stormwater Runoff, Mary Elizabeth Brabham

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT Continuous flow column studies were conducted to characterize suspended sol ids and heavy metal reduct ions through sedimentation with varying overflow rates. The heavy metals tested were cadmium, zinc, copper, iron, lead, nickel and chromium. Stormwater derived samples spiked with street sweepings categorized into particle size ranges less than 500 microns in diameter were utilized in the research. Overflow rates investigated ranged from 28 to 3600 gallons per day per square foot. Theoretical predictions of suspended solids reductions with the application of Stoke's Law exceeded observed reductions for the continuous flow system. Performance curves for all reductions over the …

Using Combined Integration Algorithms For Real-Time Simulation Of Continuous Systems, Larry Keith Harbor

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

At many American colleges and universities, efforts to enhance the retention of a diverse group of students have become a priority. This study represents part of this effort at the University of Central Florida, a large public suburban state university in the South. Specifically, this investigation evaluated Pegasus '95 and the Academic Mentoring Program offered in the Summer and Fall Semesters of 1995 to specially-admitted students who fell short of regular admissions requirements. During the summer, Pegasus '95 provided testing, orientation, guided course work, study skills workshops, and mentoring, both individually and in the context of cohesive socialization groups of …

Utilization Of Ambulatory Services By The Health Maintenance Organization Of Florida, Thomas Harold Hansen

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The utilization of ambulatory services by the health maintenance organization of Florida (HMO), independent practice association (IPA) model, was compared to a fee-for-service population. Each randomly selected group consisted of 250 patients being cared for by the same providers, at the same clinic, during the calendar year 1986. Demographic and clinical data was gathered from the office charts. Frequencies were evaluated by the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences and t-tests were run to substantiate variance at the 0.05 level of confidence. The HMO group is a younger population (t = 0.017), and the males are responsible for the increased …

Mandate For Fear Appeal Research: A Clearer Perspective, Elizabeth Cheney Michel Jan 1988

Mandate For Fear Appeal Research: A Clearer Perspective, Elizabeth Cheney Michel

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The fear appeal is one of the most prevalent types of persuasion evident in society. A great percentage of advertising bases its success on "an appeal calculated to elicit anxiety on the part of the listener" (Miller, 1963, p. 117). Children have been reared on its admonitions. Nearly every American is by now familiar with the Surgeon General's Warning. The recent AIDS epidemic has prompted a highly consequential use of this appeal. If the effectuality of everyday fear persuasions can be left to chance, choice, or Mother Nature, this last lethal onslaught demands immediate attention from the communication community. An …
