Using Geographic Information Systems To Analyze The Effects Of Residential Location On Student Academic Success, Courtney Wilson
Using Geographic Information Systems To Analyze The Effects Of Residential Location On Student Academic Success, Courtney Wilson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Purpose: This study aims to assess the impact of social disorganization indicators (i.e., employment, median-household income, owner-occupied housing, crime, poverty, and minority percentage) on academic performance (i.e., GPA) for 6th and 7th-grade students attending seven K-8 designated Orange County Public Schools (OCPS) in central Florida. Methods: A hot spot cluster analysis was used to identify areas where high and low GPA clustering occurs based on the individual block level GPA data obtained from OCPS. Visual map comparison of cluster results and social disorganization indicators were used to understand if high GPA cluster outcomes occur in areas of social disorganization. Moreover, …

Influence Of Geography On The Healthy Gut Microbiome And The Role Of The Gut Microbiome In Ibd Symptom And Disease Progression, Sayf Al-Deen Hassouneh
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The human gut microbiome is believed to play an integral role in host health and disease. In a microbial community, associations between constituent members play an important role in determining the overall structure and function of the community. To understand the nature of bacterial associations at the species level in healthy human gut microbiomes, we analyzed previously published collections of whole-genome shotgun sequence data, from fecal samples obtained from four different healthy human populations. Using a Random Forest Classifier, we identified bacterial species that were prevalent in these populations and whose relative abundances could be used to accurately distinguish between …
Exploring Relationships Between Ground And Aerial Views By Synthesis And Matching, Krishna Regmi
Exploring Relationships Between Ground And Aerial Views By Synthesis And Matching, Krishna Regmi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Cross-view images, referring to the images taken from aerial and street views, contain drastically differing representations of the same scene of a given location. Due to the differences in the camera viewpoints of ground and aerial images the same semantic concepts in the two viewpoints look very different. Therefore the problem of relating them is very challenging. Thus, it becomes crucial to explore the cross-view relations and learn appropriate representations such that images from these two domains can be associated. In this dissertation we explore the relationship between ground and aerial views by synthesis and matching. First, we explore supervised …
Artistic Science: An Exploration Of Dramaturgy Through Inquiry-Based Learning For Youth Artists, Sam Dirosa
Artistic Science: An Exploration Of Dramaturgy Through Inquiry-Based Learning For Youth Artists, Sam Dirosa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
In the unique world of a play, dramaturgy provides the essential multi-dimensional foundation for comprehensive exploration. As the identity of dramaturgy is complex and continues to evolve, the artistic value discovered through practice positively contributes to the theatrical experience for both artists and audience members. This substantial element is mostly absent from theatrical experiences for youth, usually making a meaningful appearance in professional and collegiate theatre productions. To promote the importance of dramaturgy, I attempt to construct and explore a learning opportunity at Long Lake Camp for the Arts, a summer performing arts camp for youth artists and performers. This …
Beyond The Second Sidewalk: A Study Of Collective Efficacy At Institutions Of Higher Education And Surrounding Communities, Rebecca Decesare
Beyond The Second Sidewalk: A Study Of Collective Efficacy At Institutions Of Higher Education And Surrounding Communities, Rebecca Decesare
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Social disorganization theory (Shaw 1942; 1969) suggests that communities with greater racial heterogeneity, residential mobility, and low socioeconomic status will be less organized, thereby less able to collectively repel criminal behavior. These characteristics describe many institutions of higher education (IHEs), so we should expect that IHEs would have higher crime rates than neighboring areas with greater social organization. However, recent explorations of social disorganization have considered the mitigating concept of collective efficacy. This research suggests that the characteristics of social control, social cohesion, and trust present in communities will mitigate crime (Sampson 1997). These community characteristics also describe many IHEs. …

Florida University (1883), C. L. Crow
Florida Historical Quarterly
The most ambitious and most visionary attempt ever made to establish in Florida an institution of higher learning was probably that of the founders, or founder, of Florida University. The plan of organization of the proposed school, altho not successfully carried out, was nevertheless worthy of some respect, for Dr. Kost, its main proponent, had perhaps a vision similar in part to that which afterward inspired Mr. Buckman.

The Creek nation with its lands situated in regions claimed both by Spain and the United States occupied a strategic position at the close of the War of the American Revolution. Since no treaty existed between the two countries the question of boundaries was left entirely for future determination. The Spaniards desired to extend the limits of the Floridas as far northward as possible; while the Americans wished to establish the boundary near the Gulf as specified in the treaty with Great Britain.

Education In Florida, 1821-1829, James O. Knauss
Florida Historical Quarterly
Writers on the history of education in Florida have usually passed over the period between 1821 and 1830 with only casual mention. During this decade no public schools were established in the territory and the records relating to private schools and libraries are meagre. However, since the educational activities in these years form the background of the later cultural development, it seems advisable to gather all available material on the subject and to attempt to draw a picture as accurate as possible under the circumstances.
Home Life Of The Florida Indians, Benjamin Harrison
Home Life Of The Florida Indians, Benjamin Harrison
Florida Historical Quarterly
Every family of mankind refers fondly to a Golden Age, when peace and innocence reigned on earth. The lost paradise is no monopoly of the Christian, of the Greek or even of the Old World, since the Inca and the Aztec were equally confident in the truth of his traditions describing it. When Columbus compared the happy conditions he observed in the islands to which he came, with those of Europe, he declared the inhabitants were close to the angels in disposition as well as in geography, and he confidently looked for his Blessed Mountain in all his wanderings. When …
