Navigating A Fragmented Landscape: Insights From Civil Society Actors In Lebanon, Daniah K. Jarrah

Honors Undergraduate Theses

In the contemporary era, civil society has become an essential component for addressing the political liberalization and democratization of Middle Eastern regimes. This study concentrates on civil society in Lebanon, a small democratic nation in the Levant. Lebanon's government is a consociational system characterized by dysfunctional power-sharing among sectarian parties. Comprehending the factors in Lebanon that influence civil society's ability to function and serve its purpose is essential. This understanding can assist in gaining insights into how civil society activists in the Middle East may mobilize to contribute to purposeful political and social evolutions.

Understanding Changes In Land Use Patterns At A Parcel Level In Central Florida Counties (Orange, Seminole, Osceola), Youssef Mohamed Abdelaziz Elsebaie

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

In Florida, a state with significant population growth, it is essential to understand how land use change and transportation interact. Understanding these interactions between land use and transport is useful for transportation planners and land use modelers. Hence, in this research, we attempt to quantify the impact of the transportation system on land use and vice-versa. The research, using high-resolution land use data from 2011 to 2019, builds a binary logistic regression model of land use change. The model accounts for various independent variables, including socio-demographic attributes, built environment characteristics, and transportation network variables. The data set covers GIS data …

Local-Level Maternal And Infant Health: A Mixed-Methods Analysis Of The Relationship Between Social Determinants Of Health, Maternal And Infant Health Outcomes, And Public Health Programs In Florida, Jacquelyn Reiss Jan 2023

Local-Level Maternal And Infant Health: A Mixed-Methods Analysis Of The Relationship Between Social Determinants Of Health, Maternal And Infant Health Outcomes, And Public Health Programs In Florida, Jacquelyn Reiss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Current data highlight significant disparities in infant and maternal health (IMH) outcomes both when comparing outcomes to other countries and between groups within the U.S. Previous studies indicate that disparities in health outcomes are caused by health inequities. Health inequities are a result of marginalized groups historically being denied resources and exposed to increased risk directly impacting health. These resources and risks are considered social determinants of health (SDoH), such as income, housing, transportation, and access to care. Although SDoH influence individuals across multiple levels of society, communities are sites where individuals directly access protective resources and are potentially exposed …

Play As A Means Of Connection, Charles Street Jan 2023

Play As A Means Of Connection, Charles Street

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

This thesis research and practical application focuses on rediscovering the playfulness of the actor's process and evaluating how that translates into an actor's performance. An actor's confidence can be found in their willingness to play with vocal placement, physical tensions, and emotional and mental patterns and depth. As an actor, my definition of play theory is the act of choosing to be spontaneous, creative, and explorative in the process of storytelling to ultimately lead to stronger choices that develop rich connections. Through the lens of play theory, I demonstrate how play affects our mind, emotions, body, and voice. This thesis …

Torward Real-World Cross-View Image Geo-Localization, Sijie Zhu Dec 2022

Torward Real-World Cross-View Image Geo-Localization, Sijie Zhu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Cross-view image geo-localization aims to determine the locations of street-view query images by searching in a GPS-tagged reference image database from aerial view. One fundamental challenge is the dramatic view-point/domain difference between the street-view query images and aerial-view reference images. Recent works have made great progress on bridging the domain gap with advanced deep learning techniques and geometric prior knowledge, i.e. the query is aligned at the center of one aerial-view reference image (spatial alignment) and the orientation relationship between the two views is known (orientation alignment). However, such prior knowledge of the geometry correspondence of the two views is …

Progress In Chaos: Cash Transfers And Women Economic Empowerment Amidst Climate Change And Violent Conflicts In West Africa, Jennifer Obado Joel Dec 2022

Progress In Chaos: Cash Transfers And Women Economic Empowerment Amidst Climate Change And Violent Conflicts In West Africa, Jennifer Obado Joel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023

Do cash transfers shift gender norms of economic relations within households and communities during crises? This study explores the effect of social protection programs like cash transfers on women's economic empowerment in contexts where climate change and violent conflicts co-occur. Cash transfers have become a policy of choice for governments and development agencies seeking to alleviate poverty, address economic and political grievances, and build individual and community resilience to climate change. Due to the recent popularity of cash transfers, there needs to be more scholarship on its effect on women's intra-household economic agency and voice in communities. Therefore, this study …

Developing And Validating A Scale Of Tourism Gentrification In Rural Areas, Chaohui Wang, Yumei Xu, Tingting Zhang Sep 2022

Developing And Validating A Scale Of Tourism Gentrification In Rural Areas, Chaohui Wang, Yumei Xu, Tingting Zhang

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In recent years, tourism gentrification has made great progress in rural areas and has had significant impacts on these areas' development, specifically in the domains of the economy, living standards, community, culture, and environment. Tourists play a key role in developing tourism gentrification in rural areas, but research investigating tourism gentrification in rural areas from the tourist perspective is scarce. To fill this gap, we focus on tourism gentrification and develop a measurement scale from the tourist perspective through multiple qualitative and quantitative steps. Our findings confirm that tourism gentrification in rural areas from the tourist perspective comprises eight dimensions: …

The Epistemology Of Complexity And "Doing" Interdisciplinarity, Sharon Woodill Aug 2022

The Epistemology Of Complexity And "Doing" Interdisciplinarity, Sharon Woodill

Interface: The C3 Lab Knowledge Commons

Complexity is now well established as the driver of interdisciplinarity, but what this means for how knowledge is ‘done’ within Interdisciplinary Studies has not been well developed. This paper examines the theory of complexity and unpacks its epistemological implications for doing interdisciplinary work. The epistemology of complexity demands a cognitive toolkit that includes such things as open-mindedness, tolerance of uncertainty and ambiguity, and intellectual courage. This paper draws out these connections and suggests implications for curriculum development in Interdisciplinary Studies.

New Deal Public Works In The Florida Panhandle, 1933-1940, Robert Krause

Florida Historical Quarterly

The 1930s represented a time of profound change in the South as it did across the nation. An examination of New Deal agencies and their public works in the Florida Panhandle highlights the dynamic character of federal projects and their impact upon human and natural landscapes. Federal aid in the form of public works projects in the sixteen western panhandle counties created a visibly-new world for residents. 1 The construction of roads and towns in previously-raw coastal timberlands led to a transformation of place and the emergence of not only new commercial and recreational spaces, but the development of a …

La Florida In The Creole Imaginary: The Frontier Of New Spain In Francisco De Florencia's Historia De La Provincia (1694), Jason Dyck

Florida Historical Quarterly

"Are our oldest heroes only to be found in the colonial history of the "Thirteen Original States?""1 Jose Manuel Espinosa posed this question in 1935 in a brief article on the Jesuit Francisco de Florencia (1620-1695), one of the most prolific sacred historians of Spanish America. As a student of Herbert E. Bolton-a pioneering historian of the borderlands-Espinosa argued that Florida should be considered part of the colonial history of the United States even if it was mostly under Spanish rule until 1821.2 Since Florencia was born in Saint Augustine, Espinosa debunked what he called the "Brooke legend," the belief …

William Panton, British Merchant And Politico: Negotiating Allegiance In The Spanish And Southern Indian Borderlands, 1783-1801, David Narrett Jul 2022

William Panton, British Merchant And Politico: Negotiating Allegiance In The Spanish And Southern Indian Borderlands, 1783-1801, David Narrett

Florida Historical Quarterly

Panton and his business partner John Leslie were the most politically adept merchants of Florida's shores from the height of the American Revolutionary War until the close of the eighteenth century. Renowned for their mastery of the Indian trade, they were native Scots who exemplified their country's rising place in the British Empire over distant comers of the globe. Immigrating to South Carolina in the early 1770s, both men did business there and in neighboring Georgia, where Panton came to reside. While they may not have known each other personally at the time, the war would bring them together. After …

Hungry For Food And Community: A Study Of Visitors To Food And Wine Festivals, Mohammed Lefrid, Edwin N. Torres

Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The present study explored the effects of various food and wine festival experience elements (e.g. authenticity, entertainment, and spending time with others) on visitors' sense of community, identification, and place attachment. The authors conducted survey research with 304 former visitors to food festivals. Data were analyzed using partial least square – structural equation modeling. Results revealed that food and wine festival experience elements (e.g. authenticity, entertainment, and spending time with friends and family) positively influenced visitors' sense of community, identification with the event, and attachment to the hosting destination. Significant findings relating to the mediating effect of sense of community …

The Rise And Fall Of Copa City, 1944-1957: Nightclubs And The Evolution Of Miami Beach, Keith D. Revell

Florida Historical Quarterly

On December 23, 1948, Copa City, the world's greatest nightclub, opened on Miami Beach. Nothing like it had ever been seen before. No gaudy neon sign announced its presence, quite unlike the other clubs that crowded the area. Instead, the building itself was an icon: a dramatic, sweeping, curved structure, conceived by the renowned industrial and set designer, Norman Bel Geddes, at the behest of Copa City's young impresario, Murray Weinger, a transplanted New Yorker who had cut his teeth managing nightclubs on Coney Island. Weinger intended Copa City as more than a stage for big-name entertainers and spectacular floor …

Pensacola's Cast Iron Architecture, Cynthia Catellier May 2022

Pensacola's Cast Iron Architecture, Cynthia Catellier

Florida Historical Quarterly

Late at night on July 5, 1880, while most of Pensacola's citizens were sleeping, flames erupted from Cheap John's Clothing Store. The flames became a blaze that eventually destroyed most of the buildings west of the public square. Five months later, an even more devastating fire consumed Pensacola's downtown business district. On December 11, over 100 buildings burned, including Pensacola's two newspaper buildings, every drug store, stationery store, and even the telegraph offices. As the year 1880 ended, over ninety percent of Pensacola's commercial structures had succumbed to flames, and antebellum Pensacola lay in ruins.1
