Segmentation Using Intensity And Range Data, Jay K. Hackett, Mubarak Shah Jan 1989

Segmentation Using Intensity And Range Data, Jay K. Hackett, Mubarak Shah

Faculty Bibliography 1980s

Perception is the integration of various sensor outputs into a unified vision of the world. A major part of research in machine vision has been limited to the use of individual sensors for building machine vision systems. The use of multisensor data is advocated for object recognition systems, and an algorithm for fusion of intensity and range data for segmentation is proposed. The algorithm consists of two steps. First, the initial seed segmentation is achieved by using the most dominating sensor at a given time. For this purpose the distributions of the intensity and range data are considered, and the …

Auto-Ionizing Resonances 4d- Nl In Cadmium, J. Jiménez-Mier, C. D. Caldwell, M. O. Krause Jan 1989

Auto-Ionizing Resonances 4d- Nl In Cadmium, J. Jiménez-Mier, C. D. Caldwell, M. O. Krause

Faculty Bibliography 1980s

We measured the relative cross section and angular distribution parameter for 5s photoelectron emission in atomic cadmium across the region of the 4d→nl autoionizing resonances between 11.70 and 18.05 eV. Our results for the oscillator strengths agree with Hartree-Fock calculations, and are higher than the values reported by other experiments. Strong departure from the direct-process value of 2.0 was observed for the angular distribution parameter β, indicating singlet-to-triplet mixing in the wave functions. The mixing varies in the np resonance series, while it remains almost constant throughout the nf series. In the region of the 5p resonances …

Numerical Multiconfiguration Self-Consistent-Field Studies Of Atomic Photoionization Cross-Sections - Dynamical Core-Polarization Effects In Atomic Potassium, H. P. Saha Jan 1989

Numerical Multiconfiguration Self-Consistent-Field Studies Of Atomic Photoionization Cross-Sections - Dynamical Core-Polarization Effects In Atomic Potassium, H. P. Saha

Faculty Bibliography 1980s

The numerical multiconfiguration self-consistent-field method is used to calculate photoionization cross sections of atomic potassium in its ground state for photoelectron energies ranging from 0.0 to 12 eV. The effects of core polarization, which are very important for this atom, are analyzed in detail and are taken into account effectively ab initio in both the initial and the final state, by the configuration-interaction procedure. It is found that the core-polarization effect is very strong in the photoionization cross section of potassium. Our results are found to be in good agreement with previous theoretical calculations throughout the energy region considered and …

Accurate Abinitio Calculation On The Low-Energy Elastic-Scattering Of Electrons From Helium, H. P. Saha Jan 1989

Accurate Abinitio Calculation On The Low-Energy Elastic-Scattering Of Electrons From Helium, H. P. Saha

Faculty Bibliography 1980s

The multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock method developed by Saha [Phys. Rev. A 39, 5048 (1989)] to study scattering of electrons from atoms has been applied to the low-energy elastic scattering of electrons from helium atoms. The short-range electron correlation and the long-range dynamical polarization of the target by the scattering electron, which are very important in these calculations, have been taken into account in an accurate ab initio manner through the configuration-interaction procedure. Detailed results for phase shifts, elastic differential, integral-elastic, and momentum-transfer cross sections for electrons elastically scattered from helium are reported for the low and intermediate energies ranging from …

Laser-Induced Damage And The Role Of Self-Focusing, M. J. Soileau, William E. Williams, Nastaran Mansour, Eric W. Van Stryland Jan 1989

Laser-Induced Damage And The Role Of Self-Focusing, M. J. Soileau, William E. Williams, Nastaran Mansour, Eric W. Van Stryland

Faculty Bibliography 1980s

We review the influence of self-focusing on the measurement of bulk laser-induced-damage (LID) thresholds in normally transparent optical mate-rials. This role is experimentally determined by measuring the spot size and polarization dependence of LID and by observing beam distortion in the far field. Utilizing these techniques, we find that by using a tight focusing geometry in which the breakdown power is below P2, the effects of self-focusing can be practically eliminated in an LID experiment. P2 is the so-called second critical power for self-focusing, and P2 = 3.77P1, where P1 = cX2/327r2n2, where c is the speed of light in …

Reconstruction Of Transform-Coded Images By Entropy Methods, Nicolaos S. Tzannes, Michael A. Tzannes, John Bodenschatz Ii Jan 1989

Reconstruction Of Transform-Coded Images By Entropy Methods, Nicolaos S. Tzannes, Michael A. Tzannes, John Bodenschatz Ii

Faculty Bibliography 1980s

A new, universal approach to reconstructing transform-coded images is proposed. The method views the images as a probability mass function (pmf), allowing the retained coefficients of a transform (Karhunen-Loeve, discrete cosine, slant, etc.) to be thought of as averages of the basis functions over the pmf. This sets the stage for reconstructing the original images by using the maximum entropy principle (MEP) and the minimum relative entropy principle (MREP) with the retained coefficients as constraints in the extremizations. A formulation combining the two methods is also proposed, resulting in a reconstruction algorithm that is fast, proceeding in an iterative way …
