Defining The Field Of Communication., George Gerbner
Defining The Field Of Communication., George Gerbner
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article defines communication as interaction through symbols and messages and presents communications as a discipline concerned with the nature and role of message systems in human life and society. It situates the field historically through the symbolic construction of culture, described as story telling, and traces major transformations from oral traditions to print publics and electronic media. The article gives particular attention to television as a ritualized system that exposes diverse audiences to shared patterns of messages and raises questions about culture, socialization, democracy, and public life. It also outlines an academic structure for the field, including codes and …

What Is Communication?: Nailing Jello To The Wall, Frank E. X. Dance
What Is Communication?: Nailing Jello To The Wall, Frank E. X. Dance
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article examines the difficulty of defining communication as both a subject matter and a disciplinary label. It reviews prior efforts to compare published definitions of communication and identifies recurring conceptual concerns, including interaction, human participation, information, intent, and evaluative judgments about communicative acts. The article proposes a family of related concepts for speech communication theory, distinguishing communication from information, speech, language, spoken language, signs, symbols, and vocalization. It argues that spoken language can serve as a central concern for human communication without limiting inquiry to speech acts alone. The article also addresses the relationship between subject matter and professional …
Defining The Field Of Communication, Erwin P. Bettinghaus
Defining The Field Of Communication, Erwin P. Bettinghaus
Association for Communication Administration Bulletin
This article considers whether communication can or should be precisely defined as an academic field. It argues that meanings attached to communication change over time and that attempts to establish a single fixed definition are unlikely to resolve disciplinary uncertainty. Rather than limiting inquiry by excluding particular subjects, the article shifts attention to the role communication studies should play in higher education. It distinguishes between areas tied directly to professions or industries, such as journalism, advertising, theatre, and telecommunications, and areas focused on the production of knowledge about human communication, including interpersonal communication, rhetorical criticism, nonverbal behavior, and intercultural relations. …

Stormwater Detention Systems With Effluent Filtration, Linda M. Van De Graaff
Stormwater Detention Systems With Effluent Filtration, Linda M. Van De Graaff
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The growing concern for water quality enhancement of our surface waters has led to changes in detention facility design. Providing a filter media for the effluent water to travel through before discharge into the environment has become an area of interest. Thus, detention facilities may be used for both water quality and quantity control. Different soil medias were studied for the potential of pollutant removal and infiltration rates usable in design work. Both laboratory and field experimentation were performed. A computer program was also developed to model stormwater movement through a swale detention system. This research was performed to examine …
Transformation Of Nitrogen In Highway Runoff Management Systems, Robert D. Tolbert
Transformation Of Nitrogen In Highway Runoff Management Systems, Robert D. Tolbert
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The operation and maintenance of highways contributes a variety of pollutants to surface and subsurface waters. Solids, heavy metals, nutrients, oil and grease, pesticides and bacteria can all be associated with highway runoff. Although the full extent of the effect of all of these runoff constituents upon the quality of surrounding waters is not well defined, this study will mainly concentrate on nutrient contaminants (essentially nitrogen). The last decade has seen increasing efforts in research and development to abate contaminant discharges from highway runoff using a number of treatment facilities such as retention/detention basins, swales and wetland systems. An evaluation …
Biotoxicity Of Highway Runoff Metals To Gambusia, John M. Bateman
Biotoxicity Of Highway Runoff Metals To Gambusia, John M. Bateman
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
A research study was conducted to examine the relationship between speciation of heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu) and their biotoxicity. Therefore, static bioassay experiments were designed to determine LC-50 values for those metals on mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis. The standard bioassay scheme consisted of twelve 16-liter all-glass aquaria that provided duplicates of five different metal concentrations and a control for each run. Deionized tap water and filtered retention/detention water from Maitland Pond were used for bioassays. The effects of various physiochemical parameters such as pH, alkalinity, hardness and organic complexation on metal toxicity were determined. Also, synergistic and antagonistic effects …

A Comparison Of The Subtests Of The Gesell School Readiness Screening Test As Predictors Of Reading Achievement, Dolores W. Sapp
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
The major purpose of this study was to determine which subtests of the Gesell School Readiness Screening Test are the best predictors of reading achievement. The procedure used was a stepwise multiple regression to determine which subtests were the best predictors of achievement for each reading section of the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills. Seventy-two students from four schools were evaluated for this study. Three testing instruments were administered to these students. They were the Gesell test, the Otis-Lennon test, and the reading subtests of the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills. The Gesell test consisted of eight subtests: Cubes, Name, …

The Extent And Prevalence Of Family Violence In Seminole County, Karen J.L. Casalese
Retrospective Theses and Dissertations
This study was conducted for the Task Force on Domestic Violence in Seminole County whose purpose it was to study and address the problems of domestic violence. The data were collected by random digit dialing telephone interviews of a representative sample of 536 Seminole county families. The sample represented a .01% sample of the total population. The questionnaire was developed as a structured interview with unforced responses to many of the questions. Demographic information was also obtained on the respondent and members of the respondent's family. It was hypothesized that the Seminole County survey would yield family violence rates similar …
