The Effect Of Weight And Size On Mental Rotation, Luke Furtak Jan 2014

The Effect Of Weight And Size On Mental Rotation, Luke Furtak

HIM 1990-2015

Shepard and Metzler (1971) argued that mental rotation is analogous to the real world in that people imagine the rotation of an object as if it were being physically rotated. This study tested this assertion by exposing participants to physical shapes that increased in size and weight. Participants interacted with blocks designed after Shepard and Metzler mental rotation size that differed in size and weight then performed subsequent mental rotation. We found no difference in reaction time but found that increased size reduced accuracy. We discuss the implications of this study as they pertain to embodied cognition.

The Search For Truth In The Digital Cinematic Space And Green Screen Performances, Kade Dalton Jan 2014

The Search For Truth In The Digital Cinematic Space And Green Screen Performances, Kade Dalton

HIM 1990-2015

With the advent of the blockbuster and its visual effects, film has grown to accept these effects and the technology behind them, namely green screen mattes, as cornerstones to the post-production process. The propensity of green screen in all types of productions, especially those involving actors and their performances, raises questions about the methodology and workflow behind its common practice. Using real-life environments and people to create narrative scenes, this project explores the utilization of matte backgrounds to inform the rehearsal and performance aspects of cinematic story-telling.

Deconstructing Presence: Rethinking The Intentionality Of The Subject On The Basis Of The Existentiality Of Dasein, Edgar Diaz Jan 2014

Deconstructing Presence: Rethinking The Intentionality Of The Subject On The Basis Of The Existentiality Of Dasein, Edgar Diaz

HIM 1990-2015

Having begun from the assumption that our most fundamental way to relate to the world stems from an #I think# and that consciousness is at the center of this act, Edmund Husserl sets himself up for a very narrow and specialized view of human experience. In the end, such assumptions in the philosophical tradition and their terms often remain unquestioned and ingrained in a paradigm of discourse. My aim is to move beneath these assumptions-using Heidegger's and Merleau-Ponty's phenomenological work-so as to, first, explicitly undermine the scope of Husserlian intentionality at its foundation and, second, decenter the subject in contemporary …

Understanding The Role Of A Hemerythrin-Like Protein In Mycobacterium Tumerculosis, Caitlyn Herndon Jan 2014

Understanding The Role Of A Hemerythrin-Like Protein In Mycobacterium Tumerculosis, Caitlyn Herndon

HIM 1990-2015

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 8 million people each year are infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) leading to 1.5 million deaths annually. This staggering number calls for advancements in understanding this bacterium so progress can be made in treating and preventing the disease. It is particularly important to understand mechanisms by which TB survives inside hostile host immune cells known as macrophages and within hypoxic granuloma lesions of the lung. Preliminary microarray data has shown that a TB gene known as Rv2633c is induced upon macrophage invasion. Bioinformatic analysis of Rv2633c coding sequence shows the …

3-Amino-2-Piperidinequinoline A Novel Natural Product-Inspiried Synthetic Compound With Antimalarial Activity, Cristhian Valor

HIM 1990-2015

Malaria afflicts about 500 million people worldwide thus causing significant global economic toll. The drugs available to treat the disease are rapidly losing their efficacy because of widespread prevalence of drug resistant parasites. Thus there is an urgent need to discover novel malaria therapeutics. This research is focused on to study the properties of a novel naturallike synthetic scaffold and analyze its selectivity, and cellular mechanism of action in Plasmodium falciparum. We have identified a novel compound, 3-amino-2-piperidinequinoline (APQ), which we termed UCF401. APQ demonstrated IC[sub50] at submicromolar concentrations against Plasmodium falciparum using the SYBR Green-I fluorescence assay measuring cellular …

The Role Of Intestinal Sweet Taste Receptors (Strs) In The Regulation Of Glucose Absorption: Effects Of Short Term High Sucrose Diet (Hsd), Tania Hussain Jan 2014

The Role Of Intestinal Sweet Taste Receptors (Strs) In The Regulation Of Glucose Absorption: Effects Of Short Term High Sucrose Diet (Hsd), Tania Hussain

HIM 1990-2015

Sweet taste receptors are primarily found in the oral cavity of the mammalian species. However, recent studies have shown that sweet taste receptors can be found in extraoral tissues such as the pancreas, intestines, and adipose tissue. Our lab has previously found that sweet taste receptors are down-regulated on the pancreas in the presence of high plasma glucose levels. In order to assess the possibility that sweet taste receptors respond to high levels of glucose by suppressing its expression, we wanted to see if they reacted similarly on the intestines. We found that intestinal sweet taste receptors are down regulated …

Migrant Labor, Development, And Hiv In Botswana, William Kearns Jan 2014

Migrant Labor, Development, And Hiv In Botswana, William Kearns

HIM 1990-2015

At independence, Botswana was highly underdeveloped and reliant on external capital earned through migrant labor. This presented several challenges to development despite the discovery of diamonds shortly after independence. However, no challenge was greater than the HIV epidemic which came to infect one in four Batswana. This thesis discusses the historical factors which promoted the spread of the virus in the greater context of migrant labor and development within Botswana.

The Effect Of Calorie Restriction On Insulin Signaling In Skeletal Muscle And Adipose Tissue Of Ames Dwarf Mice, Denise S. Wiesenborn, Vinal Menon, Xu Zhi, Andrew Do, Adam Gesing, Zhihui Wang, Andrzek Bartke, Deborah A. Altomare, Michal M. Masternak Jan 2014

The Effect Of Calorie Restriction On Insulin Signaling In Skeletal Muscle And Adipose Tissue Of Ames Dwarf Mice, Denise S. Wiesenborn, Vinal Menon, Xu Zhi, Andrew Do, Adam Gesing, Zhihui Wang, Andrzek Bartke, Deborah A. Altomare, Michal M. Masternak

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Long-living Ames dwarf (df/df) mice are homozygous for a mutation of the Prop1(df) gene. As a result, mice are deficient in growth hormone (GH), prolactin (PRL) and thyrotropin (TSH). In spite of the hormonal deficiencies, df/df mice live significantly longer and healthier lives compared to their wild type siblings. We studied the effects of calorie restriction (CR) on the expression of insulin signaling genes in skeletal muscle and adipose tissue of normal and df/df mice. The analysis of genes expression showed that CR differentially affects the insulin signaling pathway in these insulin target organs. Moreover, results obtained in both normal …

Contrast Agents For Photoacoustic And Thermoacoustic Imaging: A Review, Dan Wu, Lin Huang, Max S. Jiang, Huabei Jiang Jan 2014

Contrast Agents For Photoacoustic And Thermoacoustic Imaging: A Review, Dan Wu, Lin Huang, Max S. Jiang, Huabei Jiang

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Photoacoustic imaging (PAI) and thermoacoustic imaging (TAI) are two emerging biomedical imaging techniques that both utilize ultrasonic signals as an information carrier. Unique advantages of PAI and TAI are their abilities to provide high resolution functional information such as hemoglobin and blood oxygenation and tissue dielectric properties relevant to physiology and pathology. These two methods, however, may have a limited detection depth and lack of endogenous contrast. An exogenous contrast agent is often needed to effectively resolve these problems. Such agents are able to greatly enhance the imaging contrast and potentially break through the imaging depth limit. Furthermore, a receptor-targeted …

Isotope Turnover Rates And Diet-Tissue Discrimination In Skin Of Ex Situ Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus), Nicole E. Browning, Christopher Dold, Jack I-Fan, Graham A. J. Worthy Jan 2014

Isotope Turnover Rates And Diet-Tissue Discrimination In Skin Of Ex Situ Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus), Nicole E. Browning, Christopher Dold, Jack I-Fan, Graham A. J. Worthy

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Diet-tissue discrimination factors (Delta N-15 or Delta C-13) and turnover times are thought to be influenced by a wide range of variables including metabolic rate, age, dietary quality, tissue sampled and the taxon being investigated. In the present study, skin samples were collected from ex situ dolphins that had consumed diets of known isotopic composition for a minimum of 8 weeks. Adult dolphins consuming a diet of low fat (5-6%) and high delta N-15 value had significantly lower Delta N-15 values than animals consuming a diet with high fat (13.9%) and low delta N-15 value. Juvenile dolphins consuming a diet …

Elimination Of Laparoscopic Lens Fogging Using Directional Flow Of Co2, John Teague Calhoun, Jay A, Redan Jan 2014

Elimination Of Laparoscopic Lens Fogging Using Directional Flow Of Co2, John Teague Calhoun, Jay A, Redan

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Background and Objectives: Surgeons constantly struggle with the formation of condensation on the lens of a. laparoscope, which prolongs procedures and reduces visibility of the abdominal cavity. The goal of this project was to build a device, that would direct a flow of carbon dioxide (CO2) into an open chamber surrounding the lens of a laparoscope, acting to keep moisture away from the lens and eliminate condensation. Methods: The device isolates the lens of the laparoscope from the humid environment of the intraperitoneal cavity by creating a microenvironment of dry CO2. This was accomplished by building a communicating sleeve that …

James, Heather L. Haas, Ronald J. Smolowitz, Daniel R. Evans, David S. Addison, Dean A. Bagley, Llewellyn M. Ehrhart, John F. Weishampel

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Stable isotope analysis can be used to infer geospatial linkages of highly migratory species. Identifying foraging grounds of marine organisms from their isotopic signatures is becoming de rigueur as it has been with terrestrial organisms. Sea turtles are being increasingly studied using a combination of satellite telemetry and stable isotope analysis; these studies along with those from other charismatic, highly vagile, and widely distributed species (e.g., tuna, billfish, sharks, dolphins, whales) have the potential to yield large datasets to develop methodologies to decipher migratory pathways in the marine realm. We collected tissue samples (epidermis and red blood cells) for carbon …

Matrix Metalloproteinase-3 Causes Dopaminergic Neuronal Death Through Nox1-Regenerated Oxidative Stress, Dong-Hee Choi, Ji-Hye Kim, Joo-Ha Seo, Jongmin Lee, Wahn Soo Choi, Yoon-Seong Kim Jan 2014

Matrix Metalloproteinase-3 Causes Dopaminergic Neuronal Death Through Nox1-Regenerated Oxidative Stress, Dong-Hee Choi, Ji-Hye Kim, Joo-Ha Seo, Jongmin Lee, Wahn Soo Choi, Yoon-Seong Kim

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

In the present study we investigated the interplay between matrix metalloproteinase 3 (MMP3) and NADPH oxidase 1 (Nox1) in the process of dopamine (DA) neuronal death. We found that MMP3 activation causes the induction of Nox1 via mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and subsequently Rac1 activation, eventually leading to Nox1-derived superoxide generation in a rat DA neuronal N27 cells exposed to 6-OHDA. While a MMP3 inhibitor, NNGH, largely attenuated mitochondrial ROS and subsequent Nox1 induction, both apocynin, a putative Nox inhibitor and GKT137831, a Nox1 selective inhibitor failed to reduce 6-OHDA-induced mitochondrial ROS. However, both inhibitors for MMP3 and …

Intravesical Alt-803 And Bcg Treatment Reduces Tumor Burden In A Carcinogen Induced Bladder Cancer Rat Model; A Role For Cytokine Production And Nk Cell Expansion, Evan Gomes-Giacoia, Makito Miyake, Steve Goodison, Aravindhan Sriharan, Ge Zhang, Lijing You, Jack O. Egan, Peter R. Rhode, Alexander S. Parker, Karl X. Chai, Hing C. Wong, Charles J. Rosser

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) has been shown to induce a specific immunologic response (i.e., activation of IL-2 and effector T-cells), while preclinical studies using ALT-803 (mutated IL-15 analogue combined with IL-15R alpha-Fc fusion) have shown promising results by prolonging the agent's half-life and stimulating CD8+ T-cells. Based on these results, we hypothesized that the intravesical administration of ALT-803 along with BCG will generate an immunologic response leading to significant bladder tumor burden reduction. Using a well-established carcinogen induced rat non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) model, we studied the effects of intravesical ALT-803 with and without BCG. Rat tissues were evaluated …

Simple Objective Detection Of Human Lyme Disease Infection Using Immuno-Pcr And A Single Recombinant Hybrid Antigen, Micah D. Halpern, Claudia R. Molins, Martin Schriefer, Mollie W. Jewett

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

A serology-based tiered approach has, to date, provided the most effective means of laboratory confirmation of clinically suspected cases of Lyme disease, but it lacks sensitivity in the early stages of disease and is often dependent on subjectively scored immunoblots. We recently demonstrated the use of immuno-PCR (iPCR) for detecting Borrelia burgdorferi antibodies in patient serum samples that were positive for Lyme disease. To better understand the performance of the Lyme disease iPCR assay, the repeatability and variability of the background of the assay across samples from a healthy population (n = 36) were analyzed. Both of these parameters were …

No Evidence Of Metabolic Depression In Western Alaskan Juvenile Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias Jubatus), Lisa A. Hoopes, Lorrie D. Rea, Aaron Christ, Graham A. J. Worthy Jan 2014

No Evidence Of Metabolic Depression In Western Alaskan Juvenile Steller Sea Lions (Eumetopias Jubatus), Lisa A. Hoopes, Lorrie D. Rea, Aaron Christ, Graham A. J. Worthy

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) populations have undergone precipitous declines through their western Alaskan range over the last four decades with the leading hypothesis to explain this decline centering around changing prey quality, quantity, or availability for this species (i.e., nutritional stress hypothesis). Under chronic conditions of reduced food intake sea lions would conserve energy by limiting energy expenditures through lowering of metabolic rate known as metabolic depression. To examine the potential for nutritional stress, resting metabolic rate (RMR) and body composition were measured in free-ranging juvenile Steller sea lions (N = 91) at three distinct geographical locations (Southeast Alaska, …

Mediators of monocyte migration, complement receptor-3 (CR3), and chemokine ligand-4 (CCL4) were measured in response to recovery modalities following resistance exercise. Thirty resistance-trained men (23.1 +/- 2.9 y; 175.2 +/- 7.1 cm; 82.1 +/- 8.4 kg) were given neuromuscular electric stimulation (NMES), cold water immersion (CWI), or control (CON) treatments immediately following resistance exercise. Blood samples were obtained preexercise (PRE), immediately (IP), 30 minutes (30 P), 24 hours (24 H), and 48 hours (48 H) after exercise for measurement of circulating CCL4 and CR3 expression on CD14+ monocytes, by assay and flow cytometry. Circulating CCL4 showed no consistent changes. Inferential …

Lakes And Rivers As Microcosms, Version 2.0, David G. Jenkins Jan 2014

Lakes And Rivers As Microcosms, Version 2.0, David G. Jenkins

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Limnology has been greatly influenced by The lake as a Microcosm (Forbes, 1887), which described a holistic focus on the internal machinations of singular, island-like aquatic ecosystems. I consider three persistent influences of The lake as a Microcosm: as an organizing paradigm for the teaching of limnology relative to its practice; the idea that inland waters are like islands, and the replicability of types of inland waters. Based on inspection of recent peer-reviewed literature and 32 limnology texts, we teach limnology according to Forbes but do not practice it in that holistic context. Instead, we practice limnology as aquatic ecology. …

Environment-Responsive Nanophores For Therapy And Treatment Monitoring Via Molecular Mri Quenching, Charalambos Kaittanis, Travis M. Shaffer, Anuja Ogirala, Santimukul Santra, J. Manuel Perez, Gabriela Chiosis, Yueming Li, Lee Josephson, Jan Grimm

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

The effective delivery of therapeutics to disease sites significantly contributes to drug efficacy, toxicity and clearance. Here we demonstrate that clinically approved iron oxide nanoparticles (Ferumoxytol) can be utilized to carry one or multiple drugs. These so called 'nanophores' retain their cargo within their polymeric coating through weak electrostatic interactions and release it in slightly acidic conditions (pH 6.8 and below). The loading of drugs increases the nanophores' transverse T2 and longitudinal T1 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) proton relaxation times, which is proportional to amount of carried cargo. Chemotherapy with translational nanophores is more effective than the free drug in …

Bioarchaeological Assessment Of Diet And Changes In Femoral And Humeral Stable Isotopic Values Among Subadults At Medieval Alytus, Lithuania., Katherine Page

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Establishing a chronology of variation in isotopic values can reveal frailty associated with biological and social age, as well as highlight individuals who vary from typical patterns. Although general dietary characteristics and infant feeding practices were previously unknown for subadults excavated from the cemetery at Alytus, Lithuania (14th-18th centuries), previous research concludes that Alytus' subadults experienced high rates of physiological, metabolic, non-specific stress, in addition to specific diseases like tuberculosis. To investigate nuanced relationships between diet and mortality, nitrogen and carbon stable isotopes from the femoral and humeral midshaft diaphyses of 70 subadults (32 weeks gestation to16 years) were analyzed. …

Host And Bacterial Determinants Of Staphylococcus Aureus Nasal Colonization In Humans, Gowrishankar Muthukrishnan Jan 2014

Host And Bacterial Determinants Of Staphylococcus Aureus Nasal Colonization In Humans, Gowrishankar Muthukrishnan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Staphylococcus aureus (SA), an opportunistic pathogen colonizing the anterior nares in approximately 30% of the human population, causes severe hospital-associated and community-acquired infections. SA nasal carriage plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of staphylococcal infections and SA eradication from the nares has proven to be effective in reducing endogenous infections. To understand SA nasal colonization and its relation with consequent disease, assessment of nasal carriage dynamics among a diverse population and determining factors responsible for SA nasal carriage have become major imperatives. Here, we report on an extensive longitudinal monitoring of SA nasal carriage in 109 healthy individuals over …

Effects Of Weaning Age On Body Composition And Growth Of Ex Situ California Sea Lion (Zalophus Californianus) Pups, Brandon Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pinnipeds exhibit a wide range of lactation strategies that vary from just a few days to nearly three years in duration. Phocids have a relatively short, intense nursing period culminating with weaning after just a few days or weeks, while dependent otariids generally take several months of consuming a combined milk and solid food diet before being completely independent. The transition to nutritional independence can be particularly challenging for newly weaned pups, which must adjust to behavioral, physiological and nutritional changes as a milk diet is replaced with solid food. An interruption in energy resources during this formative stage could …

Proteasome Inhibition Augments Cigarette Smoke-Induced Gm-Csf Expression In Trophoblast Cells Via The Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor, Ya-Yuan Fu, Jennifer C. Nergard, Nicole K. Barnette, Yan-Ling Wang, Karl X. Chai, Li-Mei Chen

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Maternal cigarette smoking has adverse effects on pregnancy outcomes. The granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is an essential cytokine for a normal pregnancy. We investigated the impact of cigarette smoke extract (CSE) on GM-CSF expression in human cytotrophoblast cells and suggested a cellular mechanism underlying the CSE-induced GM-CSF expression. An immortalized normal human trophoblast cell line (B6Tert-1) was treated with CSE. The viability and proliferation of the CSE-treated B6Tert-1 cells were evaluated, and the expression of GM-CSF in these cells was quantified at the mRNA and the protein levels by means of reverse-transcription and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR); and enzyme-linked …
