Identification Of The Effects Of Diabetes Mellitus On The Brain, Tryphina A. Mikhail

Honors Undergraduate Theses

As more studies accumulate on the impact of diabetes mellitus on the central nervous system, they resound with the same conclusion - diabetes has a detrimental effect on cognition regardless of the presence of comorbidities. Less consistent however, are the specific mental processes wherein these declines are noticeable, and the structural changes that accompany these reductions in mental capacity. From global atrophy to changes in the volume of gray and white matter, to conflicting results regarding the effects of hypo- and hyperglycemic states on the development of the hippocampus, the studies display a variety of results. The goal of this …

A Mathematical Model For Feral Cat Ecology With Application To Disease., Jeff Sharpe Jan 2016

A Mathematical Model For Feral Cat Ecology With Application To Disease., Jeff Sharpe

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

We formulate and analyze a mathematical model for feral cats living in an isolated colony. The model contains compartments for kittens, adult females and adult males. Kittens are born at a rate proportional to the population of adult females and mature at equal rates into adult females and adult males. Adults compete with each other in a manner analogous to Lotka-Volterra competition. This competition comes in four forms, classified by gender. Native house cats, and their effects are also considered, including additional competition and abandonment into the feral population. Control measures are also modeled in the form of per-capita removal …

This review evaluated the strength of select factors in the development of cryptorchidism to better understand its etiology. The strength of relationship between factors and their respective functions during testicular descent was evaluated. Factors evaluated in the causal pathway include the signaling mechanisms Desert Hedgehog (DHH), Insulin-like Hormone 3 (INSL3) and Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF), as well as sex hormone regulation (androgen: estrogen ratio, aromatase expression). Articles supporting a factor in testicular descent were evaluated and scored. These scores were summed to create the “Step Score” for each step …

Aeromonas Hydrophila In Amphibians: Harmless Bystander Or Opportunistic Pathogen, Zachary P. Rivas Jan 2016

Aeromonas Hydrophila In Amphibians: Harmless Bystander Or Opportunistic Pathogen, Zachary P. Rivas

Honors Undergraduate Theses

For several decades amphibian populations have been declining. Historically, the bacterium A. hydrophila (Ah) was hypothesized to be the causal factor in amphibian disease and population declines. However, with the discovery of a chytrid fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) in 1998, which was identified on the skin of amphibians during documented mortality events, Ah research became of minor interest as focus shifted to Bd. Recent studies into the immunocompromising abilities of Bd, however, have opened new questions about its relationship with Ah and their combined effects on a host.

In this study, I explore the …

Cardiac Consequences Of Selective Adrenergic Cell Ablation In Mice, Lahari Tumuluri Jan 2016

Cardiac Consequences Of Selective Adrenergic Cell Ablation In Mice, Lahari Tumuluri

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase (Pnmt), is the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of noradrenaline to adrenaline. It has been found in the embryonic heart and in certain adult heart cells, including intrinsic cardiac adrenergic cells, intracardiac neurons, and cardiomyocytes, but their physiological role in the heart is not well understood. To determine the function of Pnmt-expressing cells in the developing heart, a novel genetically-targeted mouse model that causes selective cellular suicide of Pnmt-expressing cells was created by mating Pnmt-Cre Recombinase knock-in mice (PnmtCre/Cre) with ROSA26-eGFP-DTA (R26R+/DTA). The “cellular suicide” allele is the Diptheria Toxin A (DTA) gene …

Intramuscular Tnf-Alpha Signaling In Response To Resistance Exercise And Recovery In Untrained Males., Jeremy Townsend Jan 2016

Intramuscular Tnf-Alpha Signaling In Response To Resistance Exercise And Recovery In Untrained Males., Jeremy Townsend

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

INTRODUCTION: The nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κβ) signaling cascade is responsible for mediating stress-activated catabolic effects of Tumor Necrosis Factor Alpha (TNF-α) downstream of the TNF receptor (TNFR1). NF-κβ transcription factor remains inhibited in the cytosol of the muscle and can be stimulated for translocation and transcription by a variety of external stimuli, most notably by pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress. Nevertheless, currently there is a gap in the literature with regard to the time course effect of NF-κβ signaling following acute resistance exercise in humans. PURPOSE: To observe the effects of an acute lower-body resistance exercise protocol and subsequent …

Vo-Ohpic Treatment Reduces Cardiac Remodeling In Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiomyopathy, Taylor Johnson Jan 2016

Vo-Ohpic Treatment Reduces Cardiac Remodeling In Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiomyopathy, Taylor Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Doxorubicin (Doxo) is one of multiple anthracycline drugs used to effectively treat various forms of cancer. Unfortunately, Doxo treatment, as a side effect, induces cardiomyopathy and subsequent heart failure. We have previously demonstrated that transplanted embryonic stem (ES) cells and their conditioned medium (CM) modulate the PTEN pathway and reduce apoptosis, fibrosis and hypertrophy in a Doxo induced cardiomyopathy (DIC) model. However, mechanisms of inhibited apoptosis mediated through PTEN pathway are completely unknown. Therefore, we used VO-OHpic (VO), a potent PTEN inhibitor to understand the mechanism of apoptosis as well as its effect on cardiac remodeling in DIC. Animals were …
