Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution is often the result of runoff losses from agricultural or urban areas. Even though the watershed approach to controlling NPS pollution is identified as the most efficient approach, data linking watershed scale land use and specific water quality implications are very limited. The objective of this study was to quantify the impact of agricultural land use on stream physico-chemical properties. The upper reach of Flint Creek was monitored at two sampling points draining an agricultural land. At each of these points, continuous measurement of stream characteristics such as temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, depth, pH, and …

Along with air and water, soil contributes essential processes to the natural order of global cycles. With the exception of edibles from the sea, virtually everything we, and most other land-based animals, eat is derived from soil. Soil is a storage medium of essential minerals and nutrients for fulfilling our agricultural and nutritional needs. Humans work the soil to provide the basics of food, clothing, and shelter. We also use the soil as a medium to store and discard our waste. Virtually everything we do is in some way connected to soil

Cotton yields in Arkansas increased steadily during the eighties, but in recent years there has been a leveling off. Of more significance, however, is that extreme year-to-year variability in yields has occurred in the last decade, which is a major point of concern with cotton producers. It has been suggested that this may be related to extreme weather conditions during the boll development period in July and August. Average maximum temperatures in the 2001 season were a few degrees above normal. Recent research in Arkansas has indicated that elevated night temperatures during boll development may be a major contributory factor …

Automatic Feather Sexing Of Poultry Chicks Using Ultraviolet Imaging, Yang Tao, Joel Walker
Automatic Feather Sexing Of Poultry Chicks Using Ultraviolet Imaging, Yang Tao, Joel Walker
Patents Granted
The invention provides an improved method for automatic chick sexing. Under regular lighting, the color intensity of down and feather of baby chicks are essentially the same and it is difficult to separate the feathers in the image. By using UV light, the optical system significantly enhanced the feathers by suppressing the downs in images. It produced clear feather signals for subsequent identification and allocation of feathers in the image. The feather image segments could be obtained through thresholding with any value from 200 to 230 on the 255 maximum intensity scale. Important features of the invention include a video …

With the widespread development of resistance to propanil by barnyardgrass, the major weed in rice, research has been intensified in recent years to develop alternative weed control technology to the repeated use of propanil. The use of herbicides is economically important for production of rice. Field experiments are conducted annually in Arkansas to evaluate the activity of developmental and commercial herbicides for selective control of barnyardgrass and other weeds in rice. These experiments serve both industry and Arkansas agriculture by providing information on the selectivity of herbicides still in the developmental stage and by comparing the activity of these new …

A Design For A Chapel For Subiaco Abbey, Josh Siebert
A Design For A Chapel For Subiaco Abbey, Josh Siebert
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
The Benedictine Abbey is a product of medieval thought and society; for centuries its architecture signified the cosmology and spirituality not only of the order but also of a widely accepted Christian worldview. Through the design of a Meditation Chapel for the Benedictine Abbey of Subiaco at Paris, Arkansas, this project explored the cultural meaning and technical execution of contemporary sacred architecture. Nearly a millennium ago, the skin and bones of Gothic structure and stained glass represented a sacred ideal. In the contemporary context, however, this research probed the possibilities of using systems (interior and exterior), particularly the design of …
The Effects Of Enclosure Type On Aggressive Behavior In Captive Chimpanzees, Erica Renee Findley
The Effects Of Enclosure Type On Aggressive Behavior In Captive Chimpanzees, Erica Renee Findley
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
Male chimpanzees are known to be aggressively territorial in the wild. It is expected that the limited enclosures of captivity would make them even more aggressive. The Kansas City Zoo was chosen as an ideal venue to explore this assumption because it boasts the largest outdoor enclosure of its kind, and the apes alternate between this and much smaller indoor housing. Quantitative data on crowd size, time of day, temperature, and frequency/intensity/duration of aggressive behaviors were recorded for the alpha male in both enclosures during 300 hours of observation. These data were used to test the following hypotheses: as measured …

Millipeds (Arthropoda: Diplopoda) Of The Ark-La-Tex. I. New Distributional And State Records For Seven Counties Of The West Gulf Coastal Plain Of Arkansas, Chris T. Mcallister, Chris S. Harris, Rowland M. Shelley, James T. Mcallister Iii
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Unlike the Diplopoda of the Ozark Mountains region of north Arkansas, the millipeds of the West Gulf Coastal Plain of the state are poorly known. During the winter months of 2001-2002, we collected millipeds in four counties (Hempstead, Lafayette, Little River, and Miller) of southwest Arkansas and three counties (Columbia, Nevada, and Ouachita) of south Arkansas. We found the following species/subspecies Eurymerodesmus dubuis and Pseudopolydesmus pinetorum from Hempstead County; E. birdi birdi, E. mundus, Oxidus gracilis, and Pseudopolydesmus ? minor from Lafayette County; Aniulus (Hakiulus) diversifrons diversifrons, P. pinetorum, and a possible new species of Tiganogona in Little River County; …
Actin Dynamics Regulate Myosin Assembly In Muscle Cells, John Dylan Cook
Actin Dynamics Regulate Myosin Assembly In Muscle Cells, John Dylan Cook
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
During muscle cell (i.e. myocyte )development, organization of actin and myosin into the contractile unit (i.e. sarcomere) is required for proper muscle contraction. By disrupting the processes of muscle cell development, I am able to see which steps play important roles in proper maturation of myocytes. Elucidation of the key pathways in muscle development could lead to a better understanding of human cardiac hypertrophies and muscle myopathies. Since actin filament formation precedes myosin organization, I am using actin assembly inhibitors to determine if actin filaments are a necessary prerequisite for myosin organization. It is hypothesized that disruption of actin will …
Synthesis And Chemistry Of Naphthalene Annulated Trienyl Iron Complexes: Potential Anticancer Dna Alkylation Reagents, Traci Means
Synthesis And Chemistry Of Naphthalene Annulated Trienyl Iron Complexes: Potential Anticancer Dna Alkylation Reagents, Traci Means
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
Iron complex chemistry that opens a new door to the medicinal and pharmaceutical worlds is the aim of this research. Specifically, ortho-quinone methide moieties are intermediates in several antitumor drugs and have been identified as bioreductive alkylators of DNA. In our research, a class of iron compounds has been targeted to resemble these quinone methides. It is hoped that these new compounds could be modified to provide a window of opportunity toward the discovery of a selective mode of drug delivery. We have focused our efforts on generating a reactive transition metal complexed 5-membered ring analog of o-quinone methide based …
