Providing Sustainable Power Through Renewable Energy For Developing Communities In Central America, Elizabeth Topping
Providing Sustainable Power Through Renewable Energy For Developing Communities In Central America, Elizabeth Topping
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Rural electrification through an expansion of the power grid into remote villages in Central America is a development that is still years away. Using renewable energy technology, access to electricity is available even in the most remote areas of the world. These individual power grids are also called “microgrids.” Creating microgrids in rural areas provides the people living there with access to power they did not have before. With this newfound access to power, these communities can expand their access to education, using computers or mobile devices. They can power lights, refrigerators, and other devices to continue development.
The design …
Comparing Economics Of Traditional Carbonation Method And A Novel Carbonation Invention For Craft Beer, Kira Simonson
Comparing Economics Of Traditional Carbonation Method And A Novel Carbonation Invention For Craft Beer, Kira Simonson
Biological and Agricultural Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The traditional method for the carbonation of beer includes bubbling CO2 through a pressurized brite tank until the desired level of carbonation concentration is reached. The gas either dissolves in the liquid volume or passes through the beer into the gas headspace above the bulk volume of beer. The gas that passes through the liquid can strip the beer of flavors, and this undissolved gas is vented to the atmosphere. To reduce the gas lost to the atmosphere, the CO2 is dissolved into the beer slowly over a long period of time, which increases gas-use efficiency but sacrifices …

Nutritional Supplementation And Skeletal Muscle Health In Chronic Diseases, Hexirui Wu
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Prevalence of chronic diseases in the United States keeps increasing in recent years. There are approximately four in ten adults having chronic diseases in America. Chronic diseases include obesity, aging, heart diseases, cancer and many others. This thesis mainly focuses on obesity and aging. Skeletal muscle performance is impaired in obesity and aging conditions. One common reason causing this could be higher fat mass and lower muscle mass. However, there is no study showing what pathways are involved in the imbalance of body composition. Therefore, the first objective of the thesis is to determine gene expression of selected pathways in …
The Effects Of Auditory And Olfactory Cues On Visual Attention Toward Food Images Under Acute Stress, Reza Moltaji
The Effects Of Auditory And Olfactory Cues On Visual Attention Toward Food Images Under Acute Stress, Reza Moltaji
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Psychological stress has been shown to increase preference for high calorie foods containing high levels of sugar and fat. Since excessive intake of high calorie foods may increase potential risk of obesity and other relevant health issues, relieving psychological stress may help in maintaining a balanced diet and good health status. Although a variety of strategies for relieving psychological stress has been suggested, little attention has been paid to regarding whether such strategies can result in balanced diets. Since music therapy and aromatherapy have proven popular approaches to relieving psychological stress, this thesis aimed at determining whether listening to music …

The Effect Of Breakfast Macronutrient Composition In Children Ages 7-17 Years Old As A Potential Method To Combat Childhood Obesity, Angela M. Tacinelli
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The prevalence of childhood overweight and obesity is an ongoing concern. Currently, approximately 20% of children in the United States are obese. While obesity was once regarded merely as excessive adiposity within the body, it is has emerged as a major risk factor for chronic diseases such as metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Obesity is multifactorial in nature. Weight gain can result from an energy imbalance in the body due to excess energy intake (calories in) and decreased energy expenditure (calories out). Identifying methods to combat obesity is essential. Nutritional intervention may be a strategy to help …

Analysis Of Blood Purification Studies On Oxone Mediated Tempo-Oxidized Nano Cellulose Mixed-Matrix Membranes, Tony Roller
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
End-stage renal disease (ESRD) is currently the ninth leading cause of death in the United States, and of the 661,00 Americans diagnosed with ESRD, approximately 468,800 were on hemodialysis in 2016. Hemodialysis refers to a technique where a machine combined with a membrane, often referred to as an artificial kidney, is used to clean blood by removing any waste such as urea, potassium, and other smaller waste products while preserving the concentrations and integrity of cells and proteins in the blood. It has been shown in artificial blood studies that cellulose nanomaterials, like TEMPO/Oxidized cellulose nanoparticles (TOCNs), can be integrated …
Autofluorescence Spectral Unmixing For Quantitative Metabolic Imaging Within Tissues, Lucy Woodbury
Autofluorescence Spectral Unmixing For Quantitative Metabolic Imaging Within Tissues, Lucy Woodbury
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Label-free metabolic imaging through quantification of NADH and FAD autofluorescence has become a powerful and efficient tool for non-invasive measurements of cell metabolism. It has applications in a variety of fields including diagnostic and therapeutic monitoring. However, NADH and FAD imaging typically selects specific single excitation and emission bands where it is assumed that these fluorophores are individually isolated. In some cases of isolated cell imaging, this assumption holds true, but for samples with other intrinsic fluorophores present (i.e. collagen and elastin), it can interfere with quantitative results. Elastin and collagen autofluorescence prevent the broader application of these optical metabolic …
Theoretical Applicability Of Crispr-Mediated Exon Skipping In Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Andrew Greek
Theoretical Applicability Of Crispr-Mediated Exon Skipping In Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, Andrew Greek
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) affects approximately 1 in 5,000 males. DMD results from genetic mutations within the gene that interrupts the open reading frame and prematurely truncates the protein. From a non-functional dystrophin protein, DMD results in serious muscle weakening and muscle wasting ultimately leading to death around the age of 26. In some cases of muscular dystrophy, a mutation can occur in areas of the gene that are less essential. In Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD), these mutations cause less significant consequences in phenotype as the dystrophin protein is still semi-functional. With gene editing techniques, it may be possible to …
Electrodialysis Device For In Vivo Power Delivery, Jessica L. Orton
Electrodialysis Device For In Vivo Power Delivery, Jessica L. Orton
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
It is estimated that over 3 million cardiac pacemakers have been implanted in patients globally. Current lithium-iodine pacemaker batteries last an average of about 10 years before the entire pacemaker unit must surgically be replaced, increasing the patient’s risk of procedure-related complications. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate means by which to extend the pacemaker battery lifetime. The renal vein and renal artery in the body naturally produce a salinity gradient through the filtering work of the kidneys. This salinity gradient energy potential can be harnessed through reverse electrodialysis (RED). RED is an electrochemical process that harnesses the Gibbs Free …
Maximizing The Academic And Professional Success Of First-Generation College Students In Biomedical Engineering, Mona Ahmed
Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Although efforts to increase the inclusion, retention, and success of first-generation college students (FGCSs) in research universities have resulted in noticeable progress, FGCSs still feel academically challenged, isolated, and show more anxiety and depression compared to non-FGCSs. Moreover, FGCSs may possess additional underrepresented identities that exacerbates the problem. There is more risk of dropping out of academic programs for FGCSs enrolling in STEM degrees, especially those of more multidisciplinary nature such as Biomedical Engineering. From the overall population of the State of Arkansas, only 23.3% have a bachelor’s degree or higher which is the third least percentage in the United …

In this study, EEG was recorded from 157 participants at the University of Arkansas as they performed three computer tasks that tested inhibitory control (Go/Nogo Task), proactive and reactive control (AX-Continuous Performance Task), and resolving response conflict (Global/Local Task- modified Flanker Task). Time-frequency analysis (ERSP) was the primary focus of this study, in order to take advantage of the temporal and frequential characteristics of EEG recordings. The ERSPs and following statistical analysis showed significantly higher midfrontal theta band (4-8 Hz) power values for target trials (those that required more cognitive control) than control trials, which indicated that the procedure was …
Mitochondrial Deletions And Their Disease-Causing Effects, Austin Bell
Mitochondrial Deletions And Their Disease-Causing Effects, Austin Bell
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
The mitochondria perform a plethora of important functions within the cell, with one of the most paramount being ATP production. Deregulation of its function can have dire consequences on cellular functions. Mutations such as deletions within the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) can cause disease within the patients affected. These diseases often affect children, causing symptoms such as gradual loss of eyesight and hearing, diabetes, and other problems that lower the quality of life. The mitochondria are also very dynamic organelles that undergo rounds of fission and fusion to keep up with the metabolic needs of cells, necessitating a homeostatic balance between …

Differences In Learning And Gene Expression In Brains Of Male And Female Bicyclus Anynana, Gabrielle Agcaoili
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
One way to understand the variation in the behavior of animals is by looking at the genes involved. We were particularly interested in behavioral differences between the sexes. How might these differences be manifested in the brain? This study worked to answer this question by using male and female butterflies of the species Bicyclus anynana, examining what is going on in the brains of males and females as they learned from a social exposure. We focused in on how sex plays a role in behavior and learning; it has been seen that males and females respond to the same social …
Understanding Cytochrome C Maturation In Anaerobic Archaea, Blake Wojciechowski
Understanding Cytochrome C Maturation In Anaerobic Archaea, Blake Wojciechowski
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Methanoperedens nitroreducens (MPEBLZ), an archaeal methanotroph and close relative of Methanosarcina acetivorans, contain numerous cytochrome c proteins. However, difficulty in using these organisms as a model for cytochrome cresearch has created a pressure to express cytochrome c proteins in an organism that is much easier to work with. A punitive cytochrome c protein (MPEBLZ_04274) from M. nitroreducens was attempted to be cloned into a model methanogen M. acetivorans as well as Escherichia coli. Cytochrome c proteins are important for many metabolic processes within anaerobic archaea. In order for a mature cytochrome c to be formed heme must …

Avoiding Common Weight Gain In Kidney Transplant Recipients Via An Activity Program, Uchenna Egbosimba
Avoiding Common Weight Gain In Kidney Transplant Recipients Via An Activity Program, Uchenna Egbosimba
The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing DNP Capstone Projects
Kidney transplant recipients have shown to have substantial post-transplant weight gain within their first year after transplantation (Henggeler, C. K., Plank, L. D., Ryan, K. J., Gilchrist, E. L., Casas, J. M., Lloyd, L. E., Collins, M. G., 2018). After the development of end stage renal disease, a reduction in physical activity can occur as well as postoperative recovery stress (van Adrichem et al., 2018). Evidence has shown that increasing physical activity post-transplantation has various beneficial effects on the metabolic profile, body composition, and quality of life of kidney transplant recipients (Chan et al., 2019). A home-based exercise walking program …

Let She Who Has The Womb Speak: Regulating The Use Of Human Oocyte Cryopreservation To The Detriment Of Older Women, Browne C. Lewis
Arkansas Law Review
“Inequality starts in the womb.” When it comes to childbearing, advances in assisted reproductive technology (ART) may negate the veracity of this quote. In her autobiography Becoming, former First Lady Michelle Obama discusses her struggles with infertility. Mrs. Obama’s difficulty getting pregnant may have stemmed from the fact that she postponed motherhood to focus on her career as a high-powered attorney. At that time, for Mrs. Obama and women of her generation, the focus was on pregnancy prevention instead of procreation preservation. Women feared being placed on the “mommy track,” so they waited to have children until after they had …

Expression Analysis Of Cnidarian-Specific Neuropeptides In A Sea Anemone Unveils An Apical-Organ-Associated Nerve Net That Disintegrates At Metamorphosis, Hannah Zang, Nagayasu Nakanishi
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Neuropeptides are ancient neuronal signaling molecules that have diversified across Cnidaria (e.g., jellyfish, corals, and sea anemones) and its sister group Bilateria (e.g., vertebrates, insects, and worms). Over the course of neuropeptide evolution emerged lineage-specific neuropeptides, but their roles in the evolution and diversification of nervous system function remain enigmatic. As a step toward filling in this knowledge gap, we investigated the expression pattern of a cnidarian-specific neuropeptide—RPamide—during the development of the starlet sea anemone Nematostella vectensis, using in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry. We show that RPamide precursor transcripts first occur during gastrulation in scattered epithelial cells of the …

Unchartered Territory For The "Bluegrass State": Lessons To Be Learned From Over A Quarter-Century Of State Charter School Legislation, Kevin P. Brady, Wayne D. Lewis Jr.
Arkansas Law Review
Charter school success or failure is not simply a matter of chance. Both the existence and aggregate quality of charter schools in a state depend on the provisions of state charter school laws. These laws address a wide range of issues and vary from state to state. But the experiences of states with significant charter sectors, as well as those with innovative charter policies, provide important lessons for the charter school movement as a whole.
