Level And Source Of Supplemental Selenium For Beef Steers, Scott Fry, Elizabeth B. Kegley, M. Ellen Davis, Michael D. Ratcliff, Douglas L. Galloway, Ron A. Dvorak
Discovery, The Student Journal of Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences
Selenium (Se) is deficient in many Arkansas soils; therefore, an experiment was conducted on steers to evaluate the effects of two supplemental Se sources on performance, blood metabolites, and immune function. Thirty Angus-crossbred steers were blocked by weight and assigned within block to one of 15 pens (two steers/pen). Pens were assigned randomly within blocks to one of three dietary treatments consisting of a corn-soybean meal supplement devoid of supplemental Se (negative control, NC) or corn-soybean meal supplements providing 1.7 mg supplemental Se/d as sodium selenite (inorganic Se, ISe) or as Se yeast (organic Se, OSe). Steers were offered fescue …

Intensive tillage is commonly employed in many agronomic production systems in the United States. Tillage operations may include disking the field, re-smoothing the soil, seedbed formation, reducing the seedbeds, and shallow cultivation for weed control. Tillage practices in conjunction with rainfall have been linked to soil erosion, which may adversely affect the environment. The soil erosion dynamics of two large-scale production cotton fields that utilized both modern-conventional and conservation-tillage technology were examined. Studies were conducted in the cotton-producing region of southeast Arkansas in the Bayou Bartholomew watershed. Bayou Bartholomew is currently listed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as …

Studies Of Zeolite Entrapped Ruthenium Polypyridine Complexes, Anwar A. Bhuiyan
Studies Of Zeolite Entrapped Ruthenium Polypyridine Complexes, Anwar A. Bhuiyan
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
There is an intense interest in designing molecular systems which will absorb visible sunlight, initiate an electron transfer process, and ultimately convert the solar energy to useful chemical energy of fuels such as hydrogen produced from water. The zeolite-entrapped polypyridine complexes of divalent ruthenium hold promise as efficient photocatalysts for net charge separation and such efficiencies are further enhanced by organized incorporation of donor and acceptor components. This paper deals with the synthesis and spectroscopic investigation of zeolite-entrapped ruthenium polypyridine complexes which may be useful in the development of solar energy conversion schemes. The sensitizer molecules, such as Ru(bpy)3 2+ …
The Economic Impact Of Methamphetamine Use In Benton County, Arkansas, Jeffery T. Collins
The Economic Impact Of Methamphetamine Use In Benton County, Arkansas, Jeffery T. Collins
Publications and Presentations
Methamphetamine use among the employed population is on the rise as general methamphetamine use increases. Many employers are unaware of the extent of the methamphetamine crisis and the harmful effects that employee methamphetamine use has on the firm. While methamphetamine use is associated with tremendous expenses for society in the form of direct health care, law enforcement, and environmental costs, this study focuses exclusively on the increased costs that firms bear as a result of the methamphetamine use of their employees. The Benton County Methamphetamine Task Force commissioned this project from the Center for Business and Economic Research in the …

No Child Left Behind Act Of 2001: An Overview, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter
Policy Briefs
The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001, the cornerstone of the Bush Administration’s plan to reform K-12 education, strengthens significantly the federal role in education through sweeping reforms to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The stated legislative intent of the NCLB Act is “to close the achievement gap with accountability, flexibility, and choice, so that no child is left behind” (PL-107-110 [20 U.S.C. §6301, et seq.], 2001). Key provisions of the measure, for both Title I and non-Title I schools, are as follows: • accountability for education results through annual standardized testing and through additional standards …
Understanding Adequate Yearly Progress, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter
Understanding Adequate Yearly Progress, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter
Policy Briefs
No Child Left Behind (NCLB) mandates that all states develop an accountability system that measures student achievement every year. The method states must use to measure achievement is Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). States must agree to bring all students to proficient academic performance levels in reading and math by 2014 in order to continue receiving Title I funds, a federal funding program that commits $12 billion per year to help lower-income children. In Arkansas, the Arkansas Comprehensive Testing Assessment and Accountability Program (ACTAAP) serves as the basis for determining AYP and incorporates the mandates of NCLB.1 According to a 2004 …

Does Size Matter? School Consolidation Policy Issues In Arkansas, Joshua H. Barnett, Gary W. Ritter, Christopher J. Lucas
Arkansas Education Reports
Providing a reasonable education for all students in Arkansas is a legal responsibility explicitly mandated by the state’s constitution. Consistent with the long-standing American tradition of “grassroots” control of education, public schools in all states are funded and managed first and foremost at the local level. The federal government can and does enact legislation with which schools must conform. Directly or indirectly, federal mandates provide significant amounts of monies to support particular types of school services and programming. But ultimate responsibility for financing and operating schools devolves on state government. In Arkansas, it has been held, the state must provide …
