Revised Status Of Rare And Endangered Unionaea (Mollusca: Margaritiferidae, Unionidae) In Arkansas, John L. Harris, Peter J. Rust, Alan D. Christian, William R. Posey Ii, Chris L. Davidson, George L. Harp

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Harris and Gordon (1987) reviewed the distribution and status of 18 rare and /or endangered unionacean bivalve species (commonly referred to as clams, mussels, freshwater mussels, naiads) that occur or have occurred in Arkansas. They discussed four species that were federally listed as endangered, four species that were considered endangered or extirpated within Arkansas, four species considered threatened within Arkansas, four species of special concern within Arkansas, and two species for which the conservation status was considered uncertain due to questions regarding taxonomic validity. Numerous unionacean field surveys have been performed during 1986 1996, and a substantial database of new …

Age, Growth And Condition Of Largemouth Bass, Micropterus Salmoides, Of Lake Ashbaugh, Arkansas, Ronald L. Johnson, Rosalyne M. Davis

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The population size structure, length at age and condition of 140 largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, were studied for Lake Ashbaugh, Arkansas. Scales and otoliths were used for age and length at age determination of individual bass. Length at age was determined by back-calculation and relative weight was used to measure condition. The Lake Ashbaugh population is dominated by young, slow growing bass in poor condition. Ninety-one percent of the largemouth bass in Lake Ashbaugh were less than four years of age, with age 3+ bass serving as the dominant year class. Proportional and relative stock density values were 25 and …

Integrating Gis And Remote Sensing With Ecosystem Research, Suzanne Wiley, Robert C. Weih Jr.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

In the Phase II Ecosystem Management Research Program in the Ouachita and Ozark National Forests, an interdisciplinary group of scientists are evaluating the effects and trade-offs of partial cutting methods in a replicated stand level study. Information from approximately 2,000 plots is being collected by more than fifty researchers during this five-year project with plans to continue data collection long term. To evaluate the effects of different management strategies and their interactions with forest resources, data must be brought into a common format and made available to all researchers. To this end, a data support system was developed which utilizes …

Method To Correct The Voxel Size In Press Localized Nmr Stereoscopy, Diana M. Lindquist, Roger M. Hawk, Richard A. Komoroski

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Two techniques commonly used on human magnetic resonance spectroscopy systems to obtain spectra from localized volumes in the brain are point resolved spectroscopy (PRESS) and stimulated echo acquisition mode (STEAM) spectroscopy. PRESS gives a signal twice as large as that obtained with STEAM, but suffers from longer minimum echo times. While STEAM must be used to detect species with short spin-spin relaxation times, PRESS can be used for species with longer relaxation times to give a spectrum with a better signal to noise ratio. Only STEAM was provided for the GE Omega 4.7 T small animal imager used in this …

First Records For The Blackmask Racer (Coluber Constrictor Latrunculus) In Eastern Arkansas, Stanley E. Trauth

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The presence of the blackmask racer (Coluber constrictor latrunculus) in eastern Arkansas was first demonstrated by examination of a series of color slides of live specimens now preserved and deposited in the Arkansas State University Museum of herpetology. Adult color pattern is of paramount importance in the definition of subspecies of C. constrictor, and this is especially true for C. c. latrunculus. This subspecies is characterized by a conspicuous black stripe that extends from the postnasal, through the eye and onto the temporals or anterior dorsal scales. The dorsum is slate gray, and the venter is a pale grayish blue. …

Hydrogeological And Hydrochemical Connection Between The Decatur City Spring And Crystal Lake, Benton County, Arkansas, Demetra O. Salisbury, Ralph K. Davis

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Arkansas is ranked nationally in the production of broilers, laying hens, turkey, swine and beef cattle. These animals produce large volumes of waste, which are spread on pasture land as a method of disposal, as well as a source of fertilizer, resulting in nonpoint source contamination of surface water and ground water. One area of concern includes the Decatur City Spring, which provides municipal water for the city of Decatur. A total of eight sites in the surrounding area were monitored routinely for water quality parameters, including pH, specific conductance, and nitrate-nitrogen. Water temperature and spring and lake stage were …

Watershed Prioritization, David G. Parker, Rod Williams, Hubert D. Scott

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The overall objective of this two-year study was to evaluate the water quality in the thirty-seven sub-basin watersheds in the Illinois River in Arkansas and to arrive at a watershed prioritization list to use in targeting non-point source activities. A water quality monitoring program was conducted with sampling in all thirty-seven sub-basins during both storm and base flow events and more intensive sampling in eight representative sub-basins during stOffil events. Each sub-basin was sampled seasonally during low flow (base-flow) conditions and during high flow storm (storm flow) conditions. In addition to the regular sampling, the intensive sub-basins were sampled approximately …

Directory Of Water Related Courses Offered At Colleges And Universites In Arkansas, Kenneth F. Steele

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

This publication lists the water and water-related courses at several universities and colleges in Arkansas as reported during the Fall of 1996. It Is anticipated that users of this directory will extend beyond college students, and will include professionals seeking continuing education, and professors desiring to exchange information on courses. This directory is not an "absolute" source of water and water-related courses because all of the higher learning institutions in Arkansas are not listed, and, secondly, because the definition of "water and water-related" varies from institution to institution. None-the-less this directory provides a very valuable and impressive reference on water …

Techniques For Radiotracking And Biotelemetry Of Coolwater Sport Fish In Norfork Reservoir, Arkansas, Kenda S. Flores

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Sonic and radio transmitters were implanted in 19 fish in Norfork Reservoir (12 walleye and seven striped bass) to determine the better transmitter type for two coolwater fish species in riverine and deep basin habitats. Radio transmit ters were equipped with either internal or external antennas and both radio and sonic transmitters had thermistors. Sonic transmitters proved superior to radio transmitters forlocating tagged fish after stratification. Fish implanted with radk transmitters were not found after July while fish implanted with sonic transmitters were located 87% of the time. Walleyt remained in the spring-fed riverine portion ofthe reservoir where water temperatures …

Distribution Of Baird's Pocket Gopher (Geomys Breviceps) In Arkansas; With Additional County Records, Douglas A. Elrod, Gary A. Heidt, Mark R. Ingraham, Earl G. Zimmerman

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Recently, a population of pocket gophers in the north-central portion of Arkansas was determined to be the plains pocket gopher (Geomys Imrsarius), rather than Baird's pocket gopher (Geomys breviceps). This changed the known range of both species extensively. A detailed examination of the known range of Baird's pocket gophers (G. breviceps) in Arkansas resulted in 12 new county records. Biogeographically, G. breviceps appears to be found in all physiographic regions within the state with the possible exception ofCrowley's ridge. It is most common in the Gulf Coastal Plain and rarest in the Mississippi Alluvial Plain. The distribution ofG. breviceps is …

Biogeography Of Arkansas Mammals With Notes On Species Of Questionable Status, Gary A. Heidt, Douglas A. Elrod, V. Rick Mcdaniel

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Seventy-one native or re-introduced species of mammals were analyzed with respect to their geographical distributions and relationships to the four broad physiographical regions of Arkansas. Mammalian diversity in the Ozark Mountains, Ouachita Mountains/ Arkansas River Valley, Gulf Coastal Plain, and Mississippi Alluvial Plain/Crowley's Ridge was not area dependent. The majority of mammalian species (44) occurs statewide with the greatest diversity in the interior highland regions. The Ozark Mountains contain the most species endemic to an area. Thirteen species which are of questionable status in Arkansas are discussed. The presence of the plains pocket gopher (Geomys bursarius), a second species of …
