Young children diagnosed with autism and those who will go on to receive an autism diagnosis are frequently enrolled in early intervention services under Part C of IDEA. ASD-specific knowledge and self-efficacy have been shown to vary among providers working with autistic children, including those providing early intervention services (i.e., early interventionists). The current study aimed to characterize ASD-specific knowledge and self-efficacy in a sample of early interventionists in Alabama. In addition, it sought to identify differences in knowledge and self-efficacy between early interventionists serving different roles and to identify predictors of identified knowledge levels and self-efficacy ratings among participants. …

Background: PMMA denture base resins have high propensity for C. albicans growth. Previous studies have found that silver nanoparticle (SNP) addition into conventional PMMA resin improves fungal resistance without interfering with its flexural strength. Recently, CAD/CAM dentures have become highly popular, but they are also prone to fungal in-growth. However, little is known about the effect of addition of silver nanoparticles in CAD/CAM printed PMMA resin material. This research examines the safety challenges faced by Transportation Maintenance Technicians (TMTs) at the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). By ana-lyzing extensive injury data from 2009 to 2024, along with insights from surveys and interactions with ALDOT personnel, this effort highlights significant trends and relation-ships among injury characteristics such as nature, cause, source, and affected body parts. The findings reveal considerable costs and productivity losses associated with common injury types that warrant the need for targeted interventions. By reviewing successful safety programs across various state Departments of Transportation (DOTs), the study identifies opportunities to enhance safety within ALDOT. This effort …

Older adults are more likely to have symptoms of insomnia than other age ranges. Ensuring an appropriate clinical response to insomnia in older adults is vital to their health and well-being. This paper addresses the assessment and treatment of insomnia symptoms in older adults in two separate studies analyzing data from the AMBulatoRy blOod preSsure In older Adults (AMBROSIA) study, which recruited older adults (≥65 years old) who had hypertension and were living in Southern California. Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a rare, fast progressing, debilitating and ultimately fatal movement disorder. The pathological hallmark of MSA disease is the aggregation and misfolding of alpha-synuclein (α-syn) protein in the cytoplasm of oligodendrocytes, termed glial cytoplasmic inclusions (GCIs). Accumulation of these GCIs result in progressive demyelination and neurodegeneration of the striatonigral and olivopontocerebellar regions of the brain. Currently, no therapeutics have been approved that slow or halt the progression of this devastating disease. Neuroinflammation, has been increasingly appreciated as a key neuropathological feature of disease, especially activation of tissue resident innate immune cells. ORGANIZATIONAL FACTORS THAT IMPACT EMERGENCY ROOM SEPSIS BUNDLE COMPLIANCE IN U.S. HOSPITALS JASON L. KIMBRELL HEALTH SERVICES ADMINISTRATION ABSTRACT This in-depth study examines the organizational factors within U.S. hospital emergency rooms (ERs) that impact care teams’ adherence to established, time-sensitive sepsis protocols. The regression analysis revealed a concerning trend: for each 1% increase in annual patient walk-out rates, compliance with sepsis protocols declines by 2.10%. Additionally, the impact on poor ER throughput where the ESI level 3 length of stay increases by 1 minute, a hospital's compliance with the 3hr POA sepsis bundle decreases by .08%. Physical and cognitive disabilities are common following a stroke, often leading to significant changes in survivors' daily lives and increasing dependency on caregivers. These changes can include involuntary retirement, loss of independence, and decreased social engagement, which may necessitate adjustments in living arrangements and long-term care. This dissertation investigates the predictors of cognitive outcomes in stroke survivors, with a particular focus on the roles of stroke severity and caregiver factors. Utilizing data from the REasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) project, this research captures the different predictors of post-stroke cognition through biennial assessments. Mental health disorders impact approximately 14% of persons aged 65 and older and often are undertreated or underrecognized. Assessment of factors that link environmental, sociocultural, behavioral, and biological factors to overall health and disease is integral to guiding research on health disparities in older populations. African Americans (AAs) are less likely to report internalized symptoms and substance use compared to other racial groups but tend to report more severe symptoms related to either condition. Research suggests internalized symptoms and substance use share a causal relationship or an underlying factor that contributes to both conditions. Risk factors such as stress, discrimination, and trauma strengthen the relationship between anxiety and substance use in AAs. A higher prevalence of stress, discrimination, and trauma exposure was found in AAs when compared to other racial groups, increasing AAs risk for internalized symptoms and substance use. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a global health risk that increases patients’ risk for premature mortality and is accompanied by pathologic cardiac hypertrophy and fibrosis. Declining kidney function results in elevations of serum phosphate and Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF) 23, a bone-derived phosphaturic hormone. Hyperphosphatemia and elevated FGF23 are associated with cardiovascular mortality in CKD. FGF23 can directly target cardiac myocytes via FGF Receptor (FGFR) 4 and induce cardiac hypertrophy and blocking FGFR4 signaling in CKD models reduces cardiac hypertrophy, but not fibrosis. FGF23 elevations are also observed following exercise and during pregnancy, two scenarios of physiologic hypertrophy not associated …

Graduate students in STEM fields are often expected to communicate – both in writing and orally – at a professional level by the time they submit their theses and dissertations. Unfortunately, many graduate students lack opportunities to learn how to do that in a STEM setting. An informal review of US programs revealed that many offer writing courses modeled on traditional composition courses, which are not necessarily directed to the needs of STEM students. Further, many of these courses provide a series of isolated learning modules with little continuity or encouragement to revise and in which technological writing assistance is …
