The Synthesis Of C-Aryl-18-Nor-Steroids From Resin Acids And Their Derivatives., Ali Abd El-Salam Gawish

Our interest in the conversion of a resin acid to a C-aryl-18-nor-steroid was to see if this class of compounds could compete as starting materials in the medicinal chemistry field. Since resin acid derivatives are rather inexpensive compared to steroid systems, the economics seemed attractive. In order to cyclize a ring D onto the resin acid skeleton, it was important to convert the isopropyl group to an acetyl group. To achieve this goal, the Tahara modification of the Sanderson oxidation of dehydroabietonitrile was applied, to yield the 7-oxo-13-acetyl dehydroabietonitrile and the 7-oxo-13-isopropenyl derivative.Treating the diketone with formaldehyde and dimethylamine hydro-chloride, yielded …

Acuity, Luminance And Monocular Deprivation In The Cat., Elizabeth Cates Smyly Jan 1979

Acuity, Luminance And Monocular Deprivation In The Cat., Elizabeth Cates Smyly

All ETDs from UAB

Hubel and Wiesel (1970) described a "critical period" in the developing visual system of the cat extending from birth through the first three to four months of life based upon the ocular dominance condition of cortical neurons in monocularly deprived (MD) cats. Monocular deprivation during this period resulted in ocular dominance shifting in favor of the nondeprived eye. They determined that the effects of monocular deprivation were approximately proportional to the period of deprivation with a maximum sensitivity during the fourth and fifth week. After four months, cortical ocular dominance was found to be relatively immune to deprivation. Later physiological …

Hetherington and Ranson (1940) demonstrated that small bilateral lesions in the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus. (VMH) produce overeating and obesity. Their observation served to focus attention on the central nervous system (CNS) as the site of systems that regulate food intake.

Improved Calculation And Display For Dose Distributions Associated With Intrauterine Radiotherapy., Nora Chan-Chi Lin Jan 1979

Improved Calculation And Display For Dose Distributions Associated With Intrauterine Radiotherapy., Nora Chan-Chi Lin

All ETDs from UAB

A computer program has been developed for dose distribution calculations associated with an intrauterine applicator. The program reconstructs the exact source positions from two orthogonal x-ray projections. The dosages delivered to reference points A and B are calculated. In addition, isodose curves are constructed on selected planes from which approximate three-dimensional dose distributions can be reconstructed.

Design And Analysis Of Refractive Optical Systems For Irradiance Redistribution Of Collimated Radiation., Patrick Walter Rhodes Jan 1979

Design And Analysis Of Refractive Optical Systems For Irradiance Redistribution Of Collimated Radiation., Patrick Walter Rhodes

All ETDs from UAB

Lens systems that modify the irradiance distribution of a collimated beam of radiation are useful primarily in applications involving laser beams. Since a laser is a source of high intensity, coherent, monochromatic light, a number of diverse applications for lasers have been suggested. However, the laser beam does not have uniform distribution of light intensity across its diameter and there are many cases where this is a severe drawback.
