Many visual processes are directly affected by eye movements. For example, if a visual target is to be viewed with maximum acuity, the eyes must be positioned so that the image of the object falls on the fovea, the retinal area with the greatest density of photoreceptors.

Certain instances of abnormal development may be due to genotype alone or to environment alone. In all likelihood, however, most abnormal development results from an interaction of genotype and environment (Fraser, ’59). The influence of genotype on response to environmental stimuli has been investigated in Drosophila (Goldschmidt and Piternick, ’57), fowl (Landauer, ’48, ’60, ’65), and mammals (Dagg, ’66). Different strains of the same species often show varied developmental responses to the same stimulus, presumably due to polygenic differences between strains (Dagg, ’63; Dagg, Schlager and Doer, ’65; Landauer, *60). Also, single gene differences within a strain may alter the …

The symbol S will denote the set to which P belongs if and only if P is a point. The statement that the collection G of point sets covers the point set M means that if P is a point of M, then P belongs to some set of the collection G.

The present extent of our knowledge of genetic and bio-chemical mechanisms has been derived largely from studies utilizing microorganisms, and more specifically a class of microbial mutants known as conditional lethal mutants. These mutations, which allow survival in a "permissive" environment, but which are lethal under a "restrictive" set of conditions are of three main types --- auxo- trophic, nonsense, and temperature sensitive.

A Comparison Of The Effects Of The Individualized And Basal Reader Approaches To Teaching Reading To Second Grade Children., Delene Logan Sholes
All ETDs from UAB
For the last two decades a new approach to teaching reading has aroused much interest in educational circles and created a considerable amount of controversy as well. Individualized reading, as it is called by most reading authorities, is not a method of teaching reading, but a framework of ideas and techniques within which the teacher and child move to insure that each child learns to read in the most efficient manner possible.

Intimate contact between embryonic and maternal tissues is sine qua non for uterine development in eutherian mammals, since these species shed microlecithal eggs. The stores of nutrients (i.e. yolk) are so scanty in such an egg that independent development beyond the earliest stages cannot be supported.
