All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this study was to differentiate patients with Alzheimer’s disease from normal aged subjects using the Luria-Nebraska Neuropsychological Test Battery (Luria-Nebraska) and the 133 Xenon inhalation method of determining regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). In addition, correlations between rCBF detectors and Luria-Nebraska localization scales were investigated in order to ascertain possible agreement on focal areas of functional brain tissue loss. Nine subjects with Alzheimer’s disease were compared to nine normal subjects who had been matched on the basis of age, sex, race, and education. Discriminant analysis revealed 100% correct classification of all patients and normals using three of …

Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis Of Stiffened Tee-Hangers., Richard John Vatovec Jan 1981

Three-Dimensional Finite Element Analysis Of Stiffened Tee-Hangers., Richard John Vatovec

All ETDs from UAB

All framed steel structures require moment-resistant connections to join the various members. These connections form a more rigid structure using less steel by distributing the moments throughout the structure. However, the moment-resistant connection geometry combines with the support conditions to produce a highly nonlinear and statically indeterminate stress analysis problem. The applied loads are transmitted through the welds, bolts or rivets resulting in regions of high localized stresses. Because of these practical difficulties, an exact theoretical analysis is not possible. Several approximate solutions have been developed in the past and applied with various degrees of success.

Parental Changes In Sexual Attitudes And Knowledge After Participation In A Parent Education Workshop., Betty Jayne Bellando Jan 1981

Parental Changes In Sexual Attitudes And Knowledge After Participation In A Parent Education Workshop., Betty Jayne Bellando

All ETDs from UAB

In the past 25 years our society has had an increased interest in issues of human sexuality. One facet of this interest has been the development of sex education programs for children and adolescents. Conflicting opinions regarding such issues as what topics should be taught or in what context they should be presented has made the area of sex education one of controversy.

Police Use Of Deadly Force: A Look At The Birmingham Police Department., Candy R. Yarbray Jan 1981

Police Use Of Deadly Force: A Look At The Birmingham Police Department., Candy R. Yarbray

All ETDs from UAB

The public is well aware of the use of deadly force by police. Daily, news programs carry images of such violence in vivid color. Whether the force exhibited by police officers in the course of their work is excessive is a question for which an answer is sought in every phase of the political system. City commissioners try to maintain a good image of their city. Police chiefs emphasize the effectiveness of their police force.

Synthesis Of Protected Amino Alcohols And Amino Aldehydes., Charles Freeman Stanfield Jan 1981

Synthesis Of Protected Amino Alcohols And Amino Aldehydes., Charles Freeman Stanfield

All ETDs from UAB

Muscle degeneration and wasting in muscular dystrophy (MD) has been shown to be associated with high levels of proteolytic enzymes called Cathepsins. Antipain and leupeptin, naturally occurring peptide aldehydes, have been shown to be of possible therapeutic value in treatment of MD. The cost of these compounds, however, has made large scale clinical studies impossible. The purpose of this work was to develop a general synthesis of protected amino acid aldehydes, and to apply this methodology to the total synthesis of antipain. An efficient, general method for the synthesis of protected amino acid aldehydes was developed. The key intermediates in the …

Effects Of Restraint Stress On Sleep In The Mouse., Debra Lee Weiler Jan 1981

Effects Of Restraint Stress On Sleep In The Mouse., Debra Lee Weiler

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of the present study was to systematically evaluate the effects of repeated restraint stress on awake, slow-wave sleep (SWS), rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep and total sleep time (TST) in the mouse. In contrast to the anecdotal notion that stress uniformly produces insomnia, it was hypothesized that stress induced sleep disruptions would vary as a function of the intensity and chronicity of stressor exposure. A repeated measure (i.e., chronicity) design crossed with three levels of stressor intensity was employed in order to test this hypothesis. Forty-eight male random-bred Swiss mice weighing between 25 and 35 grams were implanted with cortical …

Corrosive Wear Of Ti-6ai-4v Coupled With Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Polyethylene., Glon Delman Turner Jan 1981

Corrosive Wear Of Ti-6ai-4v Coupled With Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Polyethylene., Glon Delman Turner

All ETDs from UAB

Failure of metals is due to one of three phenomena: fracture, corrosion, or wear. When two of these principal factors couple to form corrosive wear, a very serious and complicated problem arises. Corrosive wear occurs in a wide range of situations from massive industrial machinery to the delicate metal pivot in a jewel bearing of a test meter. The problems of corrosive wear are not only limited to machinery but also to synthetic devices in the human body, e.g., orthopedic implant devices contained in human synovial joints. One factor connected with these problems is a lack of knowledge and understanding …

Syntheses Of Azido- And Diazido- 10-Methylacridinium Salts., Adana Ocak Muschelewicz Jan 1981

Syntheses Of Azido- And Diazido- 10-Methylacridinium Salts., Adana Ocak Muschelewicz

All ETDs from UAB

2-Azido- and 3,6-diazido-10-methylacridinium salts were synthesized in good yield from the corresponding nitro- and diaminoacridines. The synthetic scheme involved reduction of the nitro group to an amino function, acetylation of the primary amino group, methylation of the ring nitrogen with subsequent removal of the protecting group and diazotization of the primary amine followed by nucleophilic displacement of the diazonium salt with sodium azide.Synthesis of 4-azido-9-amino-10-methylacridinium chloride was unsuccessful at the methylation stage due to steric hindrance of the 4-acetamido group. An improved yield of 4-nitro-9-aminoacridine is also reported.

Effects Of Situational Authority And Subject's Level Of Dogmatism On Attitudes Toward Conventional And Unconventional Music., Margaret Tauxe Jan 1981

Effects Of Situational Authority And Subject's Level Of Dogmatism On Attitudes Toward Conventional And Unconventional Music., Margaret Tauxe

All ETDs from UAB

Social learning theorists have recently given increasing attention to the role of situational as well as personal variables in predicting behavior (e.g., Mischel, 1968, 1973; Mischel, Ebbeson and Zeiss, 1973 ; Milgram, 1963, 1964, 1974). This recent research represents a trend away from traditional personality theories which emphasize traits as broad determinants of behavior across different situations. Rokeach's (1960) theory of dogmatism, a personality theory akin to the older trait theories which rests on the conceptualization of personality as an organization of beliefs or expectancies along a central-peripheral dimension, having a definable and measurable structure, has been used to predict …

One- And Two-Officer Patrol Units: A Comparative Analysis., Catherine A. Colbert Jan 1981

One- And Two-Officer Patrol Units: A Comparative Analysis., Catherine A. Colbert

All ETDs from UAB

The issue of the comparative advantages of one- and two-officer patrol units has been a subject of debate among police researchers for over 20 years. The objectives of patrol are to provide rapid response to calls for service, to promote police concern about a beat area, to create an atmosphere of security for the public, and to prevent crime. It is vital that these objectives be pursued, regardless of whether a city utilizes one- or two-officer patrol units.

The Agonistic And Reproductive Behaviors Of The Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis And Their Physiological Components., Patricia Lee Mckee Pagel Jan 1981

The Agonistic And Reproductive Behaviors Of The Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis And Their Physiological Components., Patricia Lee Mckee Pagel

All ETDs from UAB

The behavioral repertoire of Fundulus grandis includes 32 acts, 5 of which are found only in the male. The acts are described and categorized by function.Male-male and male-female pairs were observed for agonistic and reproductive behaviors, diel rhythms of behavior, endogenous hormone levels (testosterone for males; estrogens for females), and male coloration frequencies. In male-male pairs, dominance was quickly established and was not reversed. The dominant male often used homosexual behavior in addition to dominant agonistic acts to express dominance. Coloration frequencies were significantly higher in the dominant male. Testosterone levels were positively associated with degree of dominant agonistic behavior. Additionally, …

All ETDs from UAB

Selenium was J.J. Berzelius. discovered in 1817 by the Swedish chemist It was identified in a red deposit that had collected on the floor of a room in which sulfur, obtained as an industrial waste product from a copper mine, had been used; its similarity to tellurium had caused it to have been mistaken for that element. Since the name tellurium had been coined from talus, the Latin word for "earth," Berzelius named his discovery after the Greek word for "moon," selene.

The relationship which exists between the press and foreign policy in American political life has been and still is the subject of much debate. The degree of influence which the press exerts on the State Department has been perceived as ranging from non-existent to powerful enough to topple governments. For example, in 1949, the Communist forces of Mao Zse-dong drove the Nationalist Army of Chiang Kai-shek from the mainland of China. Press exposure of corruption, impotence, and waste of United States money and matériel was reportedly influential in Washington's decision to withdraw its support from Chiang, causing many Americans to …

The Design And Analysis Of Several Configurations For A Two Channel, Three Mirror X-Ray Telescope., Abd Mohamad Kassim Jan 1981

The Design And Analysis Of Several Configurations For A Two Channel, Three Mirror X-Ray Telescope., Abd Mohamad Kassim

All ETDs from UAB

In 1922, Compton [2] first reported reflecting x-rays from polished surfaces of glass and other materials. The angles of incidence required were very large—in the case of glass, 89 degrees 49 minutes of arc—for reflection of x-rays of 1.27Å wavelength. Such reflection of x-rays is called glancing incidence reflection. The phenomenon of glancing incidence reflection is analogous to total internal reflection of visible light. The index of refraction of most solid materials for soft x-ray is less than unity by a quantity of the order of 10 -5, making the glancing angle (critical angle) a few degrees.

A Microprocessor Based Tongue Contact Palatometer., Stephen Owen Kimble Jan 1981

A Microprocessor Based Tongue Contact Palatometer., Stephen Owen Kimble

All ETDs from UAB

Tongue contact palatometers are used to non-invasively determine relative linguapalatal contact positions in speech research and therapy. The application of linear device technology to implement these systems allowed the reliable collection of large volumes of data; however, these systems proved to be costly, difficult to calibrate, subject to noise, and large in size. This thesis documents a system based on the RCA 1802 COSMAC microcomputer, which has the advantages of small size, ease of calibration, high noise immunity, and relatively low cost.

The Development Of A Procedure To Determine The Structural Adequacy Against Buckling Of Torispherical And Ellipsoidal Shells Due To Internal Pressure., Ronald Allen Hill Jan 1981

The Development Of A Procedure To Determine The Structural Adequacy Against Buckling Of Torispherical And Ellipsoidal Shells Due To Internal Pressure., Ronald Allen Hill

All ETDs from UAB

Internally pressurized cylinders are used in many industries and they frequently have closed ends of shells of revolution. These closed end shells of revolution are usually torispherical or ellipsoidal shells and they are in common use in fluid cokers in the chemical industry, vessels containing liquid sodium in some fast breeder reactors, storage tanks in the oil industry, containment vessels in the nuclear industry, and water towers.Under internal pressure, compressive forces of considerable magnitude can be generated in the shells. Buckling of these shells in the region of the compressive forces is a distinct possibility. The presence of internal pressure buckling …

A Study Of The Feasibility Of Developing Low-Chromium Stainless Steel., Ziad Abed Khalaf Jan 1981

A Study Of The Feasibility Of Developing Low-Chromium Stainless Steel., Ziad Abed Khalaf

All ETDs from UAB

Stainless steels represent approximately 2% of the total steel production in the United States. However, because of the key role they play in most of the major industries, they have a technological and economic importance far greater than their percentage of total production indicates. There are 38 standard grades of stainless steels and numerous proprietary variations. Presently, more than 170 different kinds of alloys are recognized as belonging to the family of stainless steels, and each year new alloys and modifications of existing alloys appear. According to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), the annual total production of stainless steels …

Models For Calculating Residual Voltage Of Induction Motors., Hanh Trong Dao Jan 1981

Models For Calculating Residual Voltage Of Induction Motors., Hanh Trong Dao

All ETDs from UAB

Induction motors are commonly used in driving auxiliary equipment in coal-fired power plants. An external source of power must be connected to the auxiliary system for starting a turbine-generator. After the generator speed is increased to synchronous speed and synchronized with the power system, the power to the generator auxiliary is then supplied from the generator itself. Therefore, circuit switching must be used to transfer the auxiliary power supply from one source to another source. Such switching may possibly cause inrush currents to the motors to be large enough to cause motor damage. The reason for the high inrush currents …

Modeling The Muscle Relaxation Response To Succinylcholine For The Purpose Of Controller Design., Ralph Gilbert Ritchie Jan 1981

Modeling The Muscle Relaxation Response To Succinylcholine For The Purpose Of Controller Design., Ralph Gilbert Ritchie

All ETDs from UAB

Many surgical procedures require muscle relaxation as part of the anesthesia. The reduction in muscle tone resulting from the administration of muscle relaxants renders the surgical field more accessible. Presently, muscle relaxation is commonly achieved and maintained by repeated bolus injections, by continuous infusion of muscle relaxants at a constant rate, or by a combination of these. The dosage of the drug is usually determined by relatively simple clinical guidelines, such as patient weight, height, and girth. The level of relaxation is often monitored by observing the evoked response (twitch) to periodic peripheral nerve stimulation (Katz & Katz, 1975).Present procedures …

A Fundamental Frequency Data Acquisition System (Ffdas)., Donald J. Stilwell Jan 1981

A Fundamental Frequency Data Acquisition System (Ffdas)., Donald J. Stilwell

All ETDs from UAB

The human voice contains many frequencies, but the human listener perceives the lowest frequency in the harmonic series, the fundamental frequency (FO), as the pitch of the speaker’s voice at any given instant in time. Fundamental frequency in human speech conveys linguistic (semantic, syntactical, and lexical) information, as well as paralinguistic (sex, age, and emotional state) content. Variations in FO identify major clause and phrase boundaries, and are used to indicate syllable stress. Stressed syllables, for example, are usually of higher frequency than unstressed syllables and of greater duration. Because speakers cannot adjust loudness and pitch period completely independently, as …

Heat Transfer From A Liquid To Gas Bubbles During Formation And Translation Of The Bubbles Through The Liquid., Charles P. Rogers Jan 1980

Heat Transfer From A Liquid To Gas Bubbles During Formation And Translation Of The Bubbles Through The Liquid., Charles P. Rogers

All ETDs from UAB

A preliminary investigation revealed that a significant amount of heat transfer does occur when gas bubbles form and translate through a relatively warm liquid. Therefore, a more detailed experiment was conducted to investigate this heat-transfer phenomenon.A heat exchanger was constructed which used warm tap water as the liquid and cool compressed air to form the bubbles. The compressed air was injected through small orifices at rates varying from 100 to 600 cubic feet per hour. The temperature difference between the incoming and outgoing liquid and gas varied from zero to 10° Fahrenheit for the water and from zero to 60° …
