The present extent of our knowledge of genetic and bio-chemical mechanisms has been derived largely from studies utilizing microorganisms, and more specifically a class of microbial mutants known as conditional lethal mutants. These mutations, which allow survival in a "permissive" environment, but which are lethal under a "restrictive" set of conditions are of three main types --- auxo- trophic, nonsense, and temperature sensitive.

Intimate contact between embryonic and maternal tissues is sine qua non for uterine development in eutherian mammals, since these species shed microlecithal eggs. The stores of nutrients (i.e. yolk) are so scanty in such an egg that independent development beyond the earliest stages cannot be supported.

The Prediction Of Performance In Algebra I At Mortimer Jordan High School., Barbara Sisk Stuart

All ETDs from UAB

For several years, Mortimer Jordan High School has needed a placement procedure for its ninth-grade mathematics courses. Many students want to take algebra, when they should take another mathematics course. There are several alternatives to taking Algebra I. In the ninth grade, students may take General Mathematics or Algebra I.

The Correlation Between Electrical Pulses And Light Flashes In A Proportional Counter., Ivan A. Brezovich Jan 1971

The Correlation Between Electrical Pulses And Light Flashes In A Proportional Counter., Ivan A. Brezovich

All ETDs from UAB

A proportional counter is a device used to measure the energy spectra of charged particles and photons. The charged particle ionizes the gas molecules along its path. In the presence of a strong electric field, the electrons and ions are swept toward the collecting electrodes. The electric field strength is adjusted to a value such that the electrons on their way to the positive electrode cause further ionization. The total charge collected at the electrodes is proportional to the charge separated by the incident charged particle. This is in contrast to the Geiger counter where the electric field is strong …

The Ribosome And Its Role In Early Development., Janice Williamson Roberts Jan 1971

The Ribosome And Its Role In Early Development., Janice Williamson Roberts

The cells of any given multicellular organism arise from a single fertilized egg by mitotic divisions. This implies that every cell has the same chromosomal content and thus the same genetic information. Such an assumption was verified by Gurdon (1962) who transplanted nuclei from single somatic cells of the frog into enucleated frog eggs, allowed them to develop and obtained normal adult frogs. If all cells have the same genetic information and the ability to express this information under appropriate conditions, how do cells differentiate and specialize?Mirsky (1964) observed that as much as 70-80% of the DNA of the thymus …

An Evaluation Of The Thermodilution Method For Measuring Ventricular Volumes., Roger Albert Lloyd Jan 1971

An Evaluation Of The Thermodilution Method For Measuring Ventricular Volumes., Roger Albert Lloyd

All ETDs from UAB

Accurate size information on a living heart is essential for an in-depth study of its cardiac function. A review of the literature since the turn of the century reveals the great amount of effort that has been expended in the search for better ways to measure heart size. Starling’s law relates energy of contraction to the initial length of the cardiac muscle fiber. To apply this law directly requires some measure of fiber length. The volume of the ventricular cavity is a function of this fiber length and thus can provide such a measure. For this reason many investigators have …

Low And Structure At Constant Temperature In A Superplastic Fe-Al-Mn-C Alloy., William C. Mayer Jr Jan 1971

Low And Structure At Constant Temperature In A Superplastic Fe-Al-Mn-C Alloy., William C. Mayer Jr

All ETDs from UAB

Micrograin superplasticity is that property of some metals to elongate many times their original lengths during deformation at elevated temperatures. Micrograin superplasticity is exhibited during deformation at constant temperature by metals having a fine grain structure and is to be distinguished from transformation superplasticity which is exhibited by metals which are repeatedly cycled through their allotropic transformation temperatures during straining.
