An Exploration Of Factors Related To Hypertension Control In African American And Caucasian Municipal Employees, Sunun Sinsuesatkul Jan 2008

An Exploration Of Factors Related To Hypertension Control In African American And Caucasian Municipal Employees, Sunun Sinsuesatkul

All ETDs from UAB

Hypertension is a major contributor to morbidity, mortality, and medical costs in the United States. African Americans (AAs) have the highest prevalence of hypertension in the world, exhibiting at least twice the rate for Caucasians in almost every age and sex group. AAs are also at higher risk for complications from hypertension than Caucasians. While several factors have been proposed as accounting for those differences, there is no consensus on which factors may be responsible; the reasons for disparities in hypertension control in AAs are complex, and need further investigation. This study explored relationships between multiple factors to identify how …

A Professional Journey: A Grounded Theory Study On The Experiences Of Reading Coaches As They Transition From Being A Teacher Of Children To A Leader Of Adults, Victoria Spear Jan 2008

A Professional Journey: A Grounded Theory Study On The Experiences Of Reading Coaches As They Transition From Being A Teacher Of Children To A Leader Of Adults, Victoria Spear

All ETDs from UAB

This qualitative grounded theory study described the experiences of Alabama Reading Initiative reading coaches as they transitioned from being teachers of children to being leaders of adults. This study addressed the gap in literature regarding the actual lived experiences of these professionals who were catalysts for change in the highly institutionalized culture of the public school setting. The study highlighted the triumphs and challenges inherent in the complex nature of institutional, professional, and personal change. The research participants were 23 practicing reading coaches in North Alabama and North Central Alabama. Forms of data collected included open-ended interviews, observations, and field …

Changes In Short-Term Facilitation Are Opposite At Schaffer Collateral And Temporoammonic Ca1 Synapses In The Developing Rat Hippocampus, Haley E. Speed Jan 2008

Changes In Short-Term Facilitation Are Opposite At Schaffer Collateral And Temporoammonic Ca1 Synapses In The Developing Rat Hippocampus, Haley E. Speed

All ETDs from UAB

Hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons integrate and filter spatial, temporal, and sensory information from the entorhinal cortex (EC) for memory storage. Synaptic transmission mediates the processing of incoming information, and recent studies have demonstrated that long-term changes in synaptic strength at CA1 synapses are important for learning and memory. Short-term changes in synaptic strength, occurring on a timescale of milliseconds to minutes, do not require lasting modifications and are rapidly reversible. Termed short-term plasticity, it is known to be important for dynamic gain control of synaptic transmission and neural computation. During late postnatal development, there are extensive developmental changes in rat …

Analysis Of The Hedgehog Pathway In Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma, Adam Steg Jan 2008

Analysis Of The Hedgehog Pathway In Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma, Adam Steg

All ETDs from UAB

Pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer mortality in the United States. Despite the use of highly aggressive treatment regimens (surgery, chemotherapy and radiation), almost all patients succumb to metastatic disease within 6-10 months of diagnosis. The hedgehog (HH) signaling pathway was originally discov-ered to play a critical role in mammalian embryological development. Interestingly, re-cent studies have suggested that aberrant expression of this pathway is involved in the initiation and continued growth of PAC. Small molecules that antagonize the transmem-brane protein Smoothened (Smo), a critical signaling component of the HH pathway, have proven effective in decreasing PAC …

Randomized Controlled Trial Of Low Cost Interventions To Reduce Childhood Immunization Dropouts In Pakistan, Hussain Raza Usman Jan 2008

Randomized Controlled Trial Of Low Cost Interventions To Reduce Childhood Immunization Dropouts In Pakistan, Hussain Raza Usman

All ETDs from UAB

Childhood immunization coverage in Pakistan remains sub-optimal despite universal and free of cost availability of vaccines. Structural impediments to progress may include the immunization card that is hard to read and interpret. A randomized controlled trial was conducted to assess the effect of redesigned immunization card and center-based education to mothers on immunization completion at rural immunization centers in Karachi, Pakistan. Other objectives were to identify the predictors of immunization completion and to identify factors associated with delay at first dose of diphtheria-tetanuspertussis (DTP1). Mother-child units were enrolled from six immunization centers at DTP1 and randomized to four study groups: …

Effects Of Music Therapy On Preterm Infants In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Ashley Hodges Wood Jan 2008

Effects Of Music Therapy On Preterm Infants In The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Ashley Hodges Wood

All ETDs from UAB

The study purpose was to examine the effects of a 15-min live-music therapy intervention on heart rate, oxygen saturation, level of motor activity, behavioral distress, and behavioral state levels in premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit. The convenience sample included 20 infants born at 26 to 29 weeks’ gestational age who were hospitalized in a large teaching hospital in the southern United States. In a 1-group repeated-measures crossover design, infants were randomly assigned order of music versus no-music conditions. Data were collected on 4 occasions over a 2- to 4-week period beginning when the infants were 1 to …

Staff Nurses' Level Of Diabetes And Diabetes Management Knowledge After A Diabetes Lecture-Based And Computer-Based Educational Intervention, Mary Annette Hess Wright Jan 2008

Staff Nurses' Level Of Diabetes And Diabetes Management Knowledge After A Diabetes Lecture-Based And Computer-Based Educational Intervention, Mary Annette Hess Wright

All ETDs from UAB

Nurses’ knowledge of diabetes and diabetes management and the identification of differences in knowledge gains after completion of a lecture-based or a computer-based diabetes educational intervention in 175 participants from a variety of health care settings, shifts, and specialties in a large acute-care facility in the Southeastern United States was studied. This was a randomized experimental design with a pretest (Time 1), an immediate post test (Time 2), and a 3-week-post test (Time 3) utilizing the conceptual framework of M. S. Knowles’ adult-learning theory. Nurses’ knowledge was assessed by a 45-item Diabetes Basic Knowledge Test (DBKT) with a 21-item demographic/diabetes …

The Effect Of Malaria And Intestinal Helminth Coinfection On Birth Outcomes In Ghana, Nelly J. Yatich Jan 2008

The Effect Of Malaria And Intestinal Helminth Coinfection On Birth Outcomes In Ghana, Nelly J. Yatich

All ETDs from UAB

Several studies have reported the relationship between malaria during pregnancy and adverse pregnancy outcomes including maternal anemia, low birthweight, as well as preterm delivery and small for gestational age infants. Some studies have also demonstrated the linkage between helminth infection and maternal anemia. Few studies have assessed the occurrence of coinfection of these infections in pregnancy and its effects on maternal anemia and birth outcomes. The objective of this dissertation was to assess the effect of malaria and intestinal helminth coinfection on birth outcomes in Ghana. A cross-sectional study of 785 women presenting for delivery in two hospitals in Kumasi, …
