Metaphor is often employed in the formulation of new ideas. It is useful as a kind of expansion bridge which stretches between pre-existing concepts and original ideas still in the nebulous stage of formation. This is true when the theorist is creating new systems of thought and it is true when he is attempting to relate these new ways of viewing his subject to an interested audience.

Cell death is known to be a widespread and essential event during the normal development of many tissues and organs (Glucksmann, 1965). Whole organs may degenerate during normal organogenesis. For example, massive necrosis is necessary for the proper formation of the excretory and urogenital duct systems in vertebrates (Saunders, 1966). Cell death also has an important role in the contouring of some organs. The sculpturing of the chick wing is related to precisely timed cell death (Saunders, Gasseling, and Saunders, 1962) as is the shaping of the digits in the mammal (Milaire, 1965).

Certain instances of abnormal development may be due to genotype alone or to environment alone. In all likelihood, however, most abnormal development results from an interaction of genotype and environment (Fraser, ’59). The influence of genotype on response to environmental stimuli has been investigated in Drosophila (Goldschmidt and Piternick, ’57), fowl (Landauer, ’48, ’60, ’65), and mammals (Dagg, ’66). Different strains of the same species often show varied developmental responses to the same stimulus, presumably due to polygenic differences between strains (Dagg, ’63; Dagg, Schlager and Doer, ’65; Landauer, *60). Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is contracted as an intrauterine infection by the fetus during the fifth month of gestation (Medearis, 1964). One form of this virus is sometimes accompanied by a classical array of symptoms : jaundice, hepatosplenomegaly, purpura, erythroblastic or hemolytic anemia, central nervous system disease (Stem, Booth, Eleck and Fleck, 1969). In addition, thrombocytopenia, chorioretinitis, pneumonia and diarrhea also may be found (Emmanuel and Kenny, 1966 ; Medearis, 1964, and Weller and Hanshaw, 1962).
