Even a casual observation of city life causes one to wonder why people huddle so close together. While there are many good things about cities, they also are plagued by overwhelming problems. Every urban problem evolves out of a historical context.In order to understand the impact of racial transition on a southern city, we must be familiar with how southern cities developed historically and how the racial patterns which caused major urban problems emerged.Urbanization in the South was overlooked by scholars for many years since the region was primarily agrarian. It is well known that mutant genes and environmental agents acting alone will induce developmental malformations. Within the past twenty-five years, more attention has been given to the interaction of the whole genome and specific mutant genes with either chemical or physical teratogens. Results of such studies have been reported in chickens, Drosophila and mammals (Landauer, '48, '60, '65; Goldschmidt and Piternick, '57; Barber, '59; Beck, '63, '64; Dagg, '66, '67, '72; Forsthoefel, '72, '75; Johnson, '70; Hamburgh et al., '70; Winfield and Bennett, '71; Musgrove, '73). The soluble phosphoproteins of the dentin have been isolated from the rabbit, cow, hog, and human. The phosphoproteins were purified by means of gel filtration and anion-exchange chromatography, and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. They all showed high levels of aspartic acid, serine, and phosphate which is bound as phosphoserine. The data do not clearly suggest that a dentin phosphoprotein exists in the fish. The phosphoprotein of dentin may be a high molecular weight aggregate of greater than 150,000 daltons.The phosphoproteins purified in this study compare reasonably to the majority of the soluble and insoluble phosphoproteins isolated by other investigators.The findings of …

Secondary Negative Reinforcing Properties Of A Stimulus Associated With Suppression Of Morphine-Induced Abstinence., Danna Lee Rickert

Contemporary theories of learning and motivation assert that stimuli which are paired with conventional reinforcers such as food and water readily acquire the properties of conditioned or "secondary” reinforcers. However, when stimuli are paired with the reduction of aversive drive states induced by the onset of noxious or painful stimuli, generally no conditioning is observed. The results of studies dealing with experimental narcotic addiction suggest that narcotic withdrawal is an aversive drive state which may prove to be an exception in terms of its ability to alter the neutrality of environmental cues associated with its reduction. Preaxial polydactyly is one of the most frequent limb anomalies in man, and sporadically occurs in poultry, pigeons, and in the hindlimbs of cats, dogs, mice and guinea pigs (Carter, 1954). Polydactyly is detectable by the stage of footplate morphogenesis, but it is inducible before hind-limb bud formation by irradiation of mouse embryos at 8 and 9 days of development (Russell, 1950). Russell's observations are significant because they suggest that polydactyly results from more than minor local disturbances of footplate morphogenesis.

In the human retina the rods and cones are unevenly distributed, with the greatest density of photoreceptors being located at the fovea. A perceptual correlate of this anatomical distribution is that visual acuity (a measure of spatial resolution) is greatest at the fovea. Accordingly, one function of eye movements is to acquire visual targets for foveal viewing.

The family, the backbone of society, is supposed to be an oasis of serenity where love abounds. Such is not always the case. Actually "There are more police calls for family conflicts than for murders, aggravated batteries, and all other serious crimes." The problem of family disturbances is said to have an iceberg quality because such a large portion of the problem has remained below the level of public consciousness. Perhaps the public has intentionally disregarded the problem of family disturbances. Typically, Americans seem to ignore unpleasantries until they affect them as individuals.

The investigations reported in this thesis were concerned with the embryological development, the penetrance, and the expressivity in two strains of inbred mice of a mutant gene: Hypodactyly, whose principal manifestation is a numerical reduction of the hindlimb digits.In 1966, Hypodactyly (symbol Hd; linkage group XI) occurred spontaneously in the inbred strain MYA/Hu (Hummel, 1971). Since the strain was homozygous for another mutant gene which interfered with classification of the new mutant, Hypodactyly was transferred by outcrossing to unrelated normal animals for study of its inheritance and expression. Hypodactyly was inherited as a semi-dominant mutation with full penetrance. No maternal …
